Greenwood Avenue. Unbeknownst to many, this particular enclave is not just a place filled with flashy cars, big houses and upperclassmen. In fact, this supposed ‘rich man’s land’ is a foodie haven that houses some of the most interesting eats.

Don’t let these restaurants intimidate you with their chic facades and the extensive wine displays scare you because many of the eateries nestled along Greenwood Avenue offer great nosh at not-so-exorbitant prices. What’s more, the quiet and relaxing vibe of the neighbourhood provides a great escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Many restaurants have come and gone over the years in this enclave so here is our updated food guide to Greenwood Avenue.

73@HILLCREST

Perhaps one of the more wallet-friendly eateries in the area, 73@Hillcrest serves as a coffee shop by day and transforms into a bistro by night. Most of the items on their menu are kept below S$13 and there is no GST and service charge.

If you pop by for brunch, do try their Avocado & Poached Egg (S$12.80). Think perfectly poached eggs with a luscious runny centre and generous servings of ripe avocado and kale.

For many years now, Greenwood Fish Market has been around and still, it continues to wow us with their stellar fish and chips and seafood offerings. This is a no-nonsense and minimal extravagance sort of joint—just fresh, honest seafood prepared with simple cooking techniques.

If you are looking to splurge, the seasonal Alaskan king crab will do just the trick. If not, nothing like a plate of crispy fish and chips to put your tummy in a happy place.

Mo & Jo Sourdough Burgers dish up honest and simple burgers that are incredibly irresistible due to the wholesome ingredients and pillowy soft buns that they use in their food.

Not only do they serve mouth-watering burgers, but their restaurant is also child and dog-friendly!

This family favourite offers affordably priced pies topped with copious amounts of fresh toppings from sun-dried tomatoes to prosciutto, pancetta and seafood. Their family pizza is colossal, to say the least, and is worth getting for groups of 4 or more.

Their pasta offerings are pretty decent as well but the one dish that trumps all others (to us) is their Crispy Portobello and Chicken starter.

RUBATO ITALIAN RESTAURANT & WINE BAR

A wallet-friendly dining establishment you should be taking note of is 73@Hillcrest—one of the many options along Greenwood Avenue.

73@Hillcrest is a coffee shop by day where diners can delight in their multi-cuisine menu and a bistro by night for a chill dinner and drinking session with your mates. Most of the items on their menu are kept below S$13 and there is no GST and service charge.

We popped by on a Sunday afternoon to check out their weekend brunch.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Visitors can choose to sit in the alfresco area or indoors, but do note that the bistro does not have air conditioning.

Avocado & Poached Egg (S$12.80) is the most popular brunch item on their menu and it is not hard to see why. The presentation alone is enough to win our hearts and it surely is a dream for all who are into food photography.

The poached egg was done to perfection with a ’Boomerang-worthy’, runny egg yolk that spilled out almost immediately. And we loved the generous portion of soft avocado and subtle hint of bitterness from the kale.

The Truffle Scramble Bacon Toast (S$8.80) came with soft, buttery scrambled eggs, crispy bacon sprinkled with truffle salt and toasted brioche.

Swing by on a weekend to enjoy other All-Day-Brunch items such as Pork in Duxelles with Brioche (S$11.80) and Caesar Salad but Prawns (S$13.80). There are also kid-friendly choices including Waffle Double Delight (S$7.80) and Scramble Toast (S$3.80).

I don’t know about you, but brunch is one of my favourite meals. I always look forward to having brunch during the weekends. The perfect excuse presented itself a few weeks ago when I met up with Felicia for the first time since she came back from Paris, and we had brunch at our favourite neighbourhood – Greenwood Avenue.

I was trying to decide on a place as I looked through my Guide to Restaurants in Greenwood Avenue, and for some reason, Bronte, a family owned neighbourhood restaurant which serves modern Australian Cuisine, called out to me.

No prize for guessing where we went for brunch.

Bronte at Greenwood Avenue has a casual and unpretentious setting, which means to say you can go there for a good meal without worrying about having a wardrobe malfunction. If you are looking for a place to go for brunch this weekend, take up your phone and make a reservation at Bronte.

The Australian Restaurant serves brunch on weekends and public holidays from 9.30am to 2.30pm. Although the brunch menu is fairly small, you can still find all the popular breakfast food like Ricotta Pancakes ($16) with fresh banana and maple syrup; Homemade Corn Fritters ($16) with avocado and rocket salad; Scrambled Eggs ($17) with pork sausages, potato hash, and toast; Poached Eggs ($17), spinach, & hollandaise sauce on toast; and Aussie Prime Beef Burger ($16).

We tried the Ricotta Pancakes, Eggs Benedict, and Scrambled Eggs.

I am currently on many missions, and one of them is to find the best Eggs Benedict in Singapore. Unfortunately, Bronte’s Egg Benedict will not be joining that list. While it looked really good, we felt that the poached eggs were only passable, and the hollandaise sauce was somewhat lacking in flavour.

The Ricotta Pancakes, on the other hand, was pretty good. The same goes for the Scrambled Eggs with sausages and hash. All in all, it was a pretty satisfying brunch.

Since I only had brunch at Bronte, I can’t say much about its ala carte menu. But from what I’ve heard, they serve a pretty decent steak ($40-48) during dinner, and as I took a quick scan at the menu, I was tempted by dishes like Butternut Pumpkim Risotto ($26), Australian blue-lipped mussels ($28), and Slow braised beef cheeks ($36). I am definitely going to come back again for dinner.

Three years ago, I somehow chanced upon the stretch of restaurants at Greenwood Avenue.

In the dimly-lit restaurant, and in the company of a group of good friends; that dinner easily became one of the best meals in my life. Needless to say, the fish and chips I had at Greenwood Fish Market that night, was one of the best that I had in Singapore.

Greenwood Fish Market is definitely the place to go if you are a fish/seafood lover. With more than 20 variety of fishes to choose from, everyone will be able to find a fish that suits their palate. Terakihi? Hapuku? Yes they actually serve them in the restaurant.

We had the House Fish & Chips ($18.95) which came with a healthy dose of salad and chips. Time seemed to freeze as I leaned forward to examine the fish and chips. It looked vaguely similar to the one in my memory, and for a second or two, I was hesitating if I should eat the fish and chips.

I had the best fish and chips in Singapore at Greenwood Fish Market, and I wanted to keep that precious memory.

What if it isn’t as good as before? What if my impression of Greenwood Fish Market goes downhill from here? So many what ifs. Shit. At that moment in time, I found myself questioning if it was a right thing to revisit the restaurant. Maybe I should just stick with the other dish and let my friend have the fish and chips. But deep down inside, a part of me wanted to try the fish. I wanted to experience that magical moment again.

The fish and chips was great, but it wasn’t as wow, or out-of-the-world like what I remembered it to be. It is still probably one of the better fish and chips in Singapore. Perhaps, some things in life will just never be the same anymore.

It’s only after looking at my old post, then I realized that we actually ordered the same items as the previous visit. Call it a coincidence, maybe. But I certainly didn’t remember that the Spaghetti Soft Shell Crab ($20.95) tasted so good before. It was completely different from the one that I’ve at Cedele restaurant recently.

The sauce was fainter, and very un-tomato-ish (if there’s even such a word). It was tangy, and it was slightly sweet — it tasted (almost) like a real crab sauce.

If you are a big fan of oysters, go to Greenwood Fish Market every Tuesday night – it’s a dollar for each oyster. We were there on a weekday night, and the restaurant was almost packed, so please remember to make your reservations.

After coming up with Guides to Holland Village, Chip Bee Garden, and Dempsey Road restaurants, I have been thinking: where’s next? I want to blog about a dining area which is not known to most, and hopefully it will encourage you to check it out.

The stretch of Greenwood Avenue restaurants immediately came to mind: a) there’s a good mix of Brazilian, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, and Western restaurant, b) the restaurants at Greenwood Avenue are nice for a quiet dinner away from the city and c) not many people have been there before.

Here’s a complete guide to the Greenwood Avenue Restaurants:

Bronte
8 Greenwood Ave Singapore
Tel: +65 6219 9151

Cafe Iguana //Now closed

Sometimes, it can get a little boring when we are always having French, Italian or Japanese food. One of my new year resolutions is to be more adventurous and try out some exotic cuisine that I have never tried before – Mexican food at Cafe Iguana is definitely next on the agenda!

12 Greenwood Avenue Singapore
Tel: +65 6462 1533

Chat Masala Too!

The Singapore Food & Beverage industry is a very difficult place to survive in – restaurants open and close all the time. When I walked past Chat Masala Too restaurant after my dinner at Greenwood fish market, the Indian restaurant was completely empty for the night. If you are a fan of the Indian food there, I think you need to get some friends down to support them before it’s too late.

18 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6762 2133

Donna Carmela/Caipirinha

From what I understand, Donna Carmela and Caipirinha belong under the same owner, with the former being an Italian restaurant and the latter serving Brazilian churrascaria.

2 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6463 4206

Greenwood Fish Market

When I went to Greenwood Fish Market three years ago, I had the best fish and chips in my life! Is the fish and chips still as good? Wait for my next post, I will be blogging about the supposedly “best fish and chips in Singapore” (from my memory).

34 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6467 4950

La Braceria Pizza and Grill

Positioned directly at the back of Greenwood is Greendale Avenue, there’s La Braceria Pizza and grill. I actually missed it when I was there, and only came to know about it after coming across the restaurant online.

5 Greendale Avenue Singapore
Tel: +65 6465 5918

Lana Cake Shop

Can you believe it? I HAVE NOT TRIED LANA CHOCOLATE CAKE BEFORE! Pfft!

I can foresee that this will probably be one of my biggest regret in life. Okay, I shall make an order for the legendary chocolate cake from Lana Cake Shop soon!

Get me a slice of the lana chocolate cake, and I will love you forever!

36 Greenwood Avenue Singapore
Tel: +65 6466 8940

Peperoni Pizzeria

Having heard good things about Peperoni Pizzeria, this is definitely the next restaurant at Greenwood Avenue that I want to try.

6 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6465 6556

Punggol Choon Seng Seafood Restaurant

The Chinese seafood restaurant seems a little out of place in Greenwood Avenue, but hey, if you are craving for some Chinese seafood, here’s the place for you.

14 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6465 4621

Raku Japanese Restaurant & Bar

I’m not too sure if you will go all the way to Greenwood Avenue for Raku Japanese restaurant since they have another branch in Holland Village. With that being the only deciding factor, I’d probably go for the Japanese ala carte buffet at Shin Yuu Japanese restaurant instead.

10 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6219 9447

Shin Yuu Japanese Restaurant
16 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6763 4939

The Wagon Wheel
22 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6469 3688

* * *

Now, who says that there’s no good food in the West of Singapore? Holland Village, Chip Bee Garden, and Greenwood Avenue are all located in the West. There are actually plenty of nice restaurants and cafes in the west if you know where to find them.

Tell me, which is your favorite restaurant at Greenwood Avenue, and which one are you going to try next?
