All the feasting at such a steal? We are in!

The Carvery is a meat-centric buffet in Singapore where you get to enjoy unlimited premium meats that are freshly sliced to order. Sitting within Park Hotel Alexandra and sharing the same level as the infinity pool, The Carvery is an upscale modern European carvery that is set to impress; we’ve dined there on several occasions, and we were never once disappointed by the impeccable quality and presentation. Watch in awe as the skilful chefs prepare wood-fire pizzas and slice grilled meats from the rotisserie.

The cosy interior of The Carvery provides a homely ambience. There is breathable space between every table, yet, the restaurant feels so pleasantly intimate; The Carvery is indeed a home away from home.

And because it is Christmas, wouldn’t it be perfect to start your meal with a bowl of piping hot Russian Borsch with Sour Cream? Made primarily with beef bones and beetroot vegetables, this soup is frequently enjoyed in Central and Eastern Europe.

But what took our breath away was the French classic Seafood Bouillabaisse. This hearty capsicum rouille broth loaded with generous amounts of fresh seafood such as prawns and mussels impressed with its full-bodied flavours; so smooth and easy to drink, and we felt all warm and fuzzy inside with every sip. Seriously, this is the best bouillabaisse we’ve ever tasted.

The main that stole all the limelight at our table was the fragrant Spiced Orange Roasted Duck. Forget the usual duck confits that you know; this entire duck stuffed with oranges and a myriad of spices such as cinnamon, cloves juniper berries and star anise is seasoned with a secret recipe and cooked to perfect tenderness.

Whoever says duck meat is often tough and tasteless obviously haven’t tried this rendition!

The Carvery’s Coffee Roasted Baby Back Ribs have been marinated overnight with a dark, sweet hickory barbecue sauce infused with roasted coffee.

The stack of pork loin back ribs is then placed in a rotisserie cage and slowly roasted. The end result is tender and robustly flavoured ribs that will make you go weak in your knees.

The Lamb Leg with Herbs de Provence is a traditional Southeastern French dish cooked to medium rare. The boneless mutton – coated with Dijon mustard, breadcrumbs and a melange of savoury herbs – is roasted in the oven to produce succulent juicy pink insides that is well contrasted with its crisp exterior.

An accompanying zesty mint sauce is its best complement, and to balance out the gaminess (for those who fear lambs).

Another exclusive festive highlight is the Maple Glazed Salmon baked on a Cedar wood plank. The wood-fired fish – enhanced by smoky cedar flavours – is drizzled with maple butter.

The juicy and fresh Norwegian salmon looked totally unassuming at first glance, but each mouthful is a delightful burst of sweetness. Simple goodness like these sure tug our heartstrings, and it is a must-try for all salmon lovers!

Something British that we always love is Yorkshire Pudding (only available during dinner). No roast is complete without a good pudding, and such is life in Singapore – a good Yorkshire Pudding is hard to come by.

But the ones here at The Carvery always have us craving for more; we’ve long been addicted. Made with eggs, flour, milk and water, the traditional British Sunday Roast staple is available during the regular dinners, but its presence made the festive dining even more rustic with its wonderfully crispy exterior and fluffy inside.

And a whole lot of comforting vegetables await you. They may be “just veggies” to you, but not until you’ve tried them.

From Baked Beetroot with Cider to Buttered Brussel Sprouts and Carrots, Fried Corn on The Cob to Wood-fired Roasted Chestnuts cooked in Coffee Beans; these amazing sides are so good on their own, and are as European and Christmasy as you can get.

All hail the English-inspired Trifle – layers of thick custard, sponge cake and whipped cream interwoven with caramelised apples and brandy-soaked prunes. The Carvery’s selection of classic Christmas treats are irresistible and well worth the calories, we promise.

Last but not least, The Carvery’s take on the traditional fruit cake has led to the birth of their cutesy palm-size Christmas Rum Pudding drizzled with rich and sticky Toffee Sauce.

Apricots, cherries, figs, raisins and other dried fruit peels used in the preparation of these Christmas Rum Puddings have been soaked in rum for more than three months! Such dedication, and how very precious!

This scrumptious festive buffet will be available from 11 Dec 2015 till 01 Jan 2016, starting from S$45++ per adult and S$25++ per child. The dishes are on rotation, but they will all be available during Christmas Day and New Year’s Day Brunch, as well as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve Dinner.

#1 ALEXANDRA VILLAGE FOOD CENTRE

The hawker culture is a big part of Singapore, and it is a lifestyle that we are always proud to share. There are no lack of hawker centres in Singapore, and though the ones that are often in the limelight do not include Alexandra Village Food Centre – or AV for short – there is really a lot to love here.

AV operates throughout the day, and you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner here. Popular finds include BBQ Seafood, Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice, Claypot Laksa, and Avocado Milkshake. You might find the last two very endearing, and they sure are. We will talk more about them in a while.

#2 ANCHORPOINT FACTORY OUTLET

If you do not already know, Anchorpoint – the shopping mall right across Ikea – is actually a factory outlet. In other words, a sale takes place 365 days a year! It is a rather mixed mall so you pretty much have everything covered.

Residents and visitors alike enjoy the discounts and slashed price all year round. Brands who have boutiques in this mall includes Charles & Keith, Typo, and Cotton On.

#3 AQUA LUNA – A SWANKY OPEN-CONCEPT BAR BY THE INFINITY POOL

It isn’t our first time professing our love for new rooftop bar, Aqua Luna, neither would this be our last. Sitting within Park Hotel Alexandra, Aqua Luna is like a gastrobar in the outdoors that offers a splendid view.

Catch the sunset while admiring Alexandra from a different perspective, and munch on bar grubs and mains – all at the less-than-crowded Aqua Luna.

#4 HORTPARK – A 22-ACRE PARK CONNECTOR

Dubbed as the first gardening lifestyle hub in Asia, HortPark is a 22-acre park connector that is situated within The Southern Ridges. There is a 10km long trail that is great for a leisure hike. Nature lovers would surely love it here.

#5 IKEA – FURNITURE SHOPPING

Because you need not have a new home to shop for furniture. We are sure many of you agree when we say a day spent randomly strolling in Ikea is our idea of fun. There is something therapeutic about walking through the different “rooms” and set-ups, and of course, we need to satisfy our craving for Swedish meat balls before we leave.

#6 KENG ENG KEE SEAFOOD RESTAURANT FOR ITS MOONLIGHT HOR FUN

Possibly one of the most famous old-school restaurants in the West, Keng Eng Kee (KEK) is your typical “tze char” restaurant, but their popularity over the decades have brought about expansion to the business, and today, KEK is a big scale restaurant that occupies two units, on top of its resident tables in the coffee shop.

Our all-time favourites are the Moonlight Hor Fun, Claypot Pig Liver, and Salted Egg Yolk Crab.

#7 BATTLE OF THE BEST LAKSA 

No, Katong is not the place to go for Laksa. Alexandra is. Because the three best ones in Singapore are all concentrated in this neighbourhood.

You have Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa, 328 Katong Laksa, and Janggut Laksa all in one area. What more can you ask for in life, really?

#8 OLD SCHOOL FURNITURE SHOPS

You can hardly find such old school furniture shops in Singapore anymore. Think rattan chairs, wooden tables, and all that our grandparents used to seek comfort in. Alexandra sure invokes a sense of nostalgia every time we are in the hood; even more so when we walk past these shops.

#9 PARK HOTEL ALEXANDRA – A MODERN HOTEL WITH INFINITY POOL, PREMIUM ROAST BUFFET RESTAURANT AND SWANKY BAR

The addition of Park Hotel Alexandra, the first hotel within the district, will change the facade of the neighbourhood forever, but we are embracing this change. Complete with an infinity pool that overlooks the green belt of the Southern Ridges, a premium roast buffet, one of the most gorgeous bars in Singapore and a stylish coffee place all within the premise, Park Hotel Alexandra is a charming one.

You may wonder what it is like to do a staycation within a residential area, and we will tell you it is nothing short of wonderful.

No secret, right? Everyone knows to go to Queensway Shopping Centre for a one-stop “solution” for all our sporting needs. The prices are usually 10% lower than town’s, and you can find just about any sports brand here.

By the way, Janggut Laksa is the very crowded stall in the middle of Level 1.

#11 THE FAMOUS AVOCADO MILKSHAKE

You would have known by now that Alexandra Village Food Centre is synonymous with Avocado Milkshake. For some reason, Mr Avocado Exotic Juice at Alexandra Village Food Centre does it so right that Singaporeans now know Alexandra for his milkshake.

For the uninitiated, it is simply a refreshing drink of blended avocado with gula melaka syrup. You have to try it to understand how that creamy goodness is so addictive.

#12 SALUTE COFFEESHOP

This is not your usual coffee shop. Here at Salute, expect new-age finds of European and Western food – all in a coffee shop setting.

The stalls include Two Wings for their fried chicken wings (which were sadly mediocre), Stew Kuche for crackly German Pork Knuckle, and Immanuel French Kitchen that dishes out pretty affordable Duck Confit.

#13 TRADITIONAL CONFECTIONERY SHOPS

We have all sorts of fancy bakeries in town, but regrettably, the number of traditional confectionery shops have been on the decline.

Modernisation had us realising the beauty of these traditional confectionery shops where we can still find old-school bread loaves, buttercream cakes and homemade spreads. These were what we grew up eating, and at Alexandra, we can count on Love Confectionery and Chinatown Tai Chong Kok Confectionery Hue Kee.

We will begin with the infinity pool that sits on the seventh floor. Who can resist taking a dip here?! This 25-metre infinity pool overlooks Alexandra neighbourhood, including the iconic building The Interlace and endless greenery of the Southern Ridges. It is one respite that you’d need from all the hustle and bustle, and what makes the pool even better is the swim-up bar. Enjoy some cocktails or a glass of fresh juice in the calming waters; sounds like life, ain’t it?

And then, we have the bar. You would never expect to find such a swanky open-concept bar in Alexandra, until Aqua Luna came along. This gem of Park Hotel Alexandra is quite the perfect spot for some after-work drinks, or if you simply want a non-crazy place to enjoy your drinks in the company of your precious ones.

Honestly, funky bars in the city centre are aplenty, but you have to settle with the crowd, and that is what we do not like. And that is also why Aqua Luna is for us, where we wind down with cocktails and a beautiful sunset.

Need some coffee? Head down to the lobby and you will be welcomed by the aroma of fresh brew from The Coffee Belt. This new kid in town is one sexy coffee place who is serious about its coffee.

Though minimalistic in appearance, the coffee packs a punch and the barista makes latte art for takeaways too! The pastries and sweets are such pleasers, particularly, the Valrhona dark chocolate cake is awesome – moist and decadent with melty chocolate bits within, and topped with sea salt to balance the sweetness.

And of course, you must be wondering about the rooms now. We stayed on the 19th floor, which is the highest of three Club Room levels; we are too spoilt by the convenience of a club room. The rooms and suites come in different configurations, but the similarity of them all lies in the spanking clean interior with contemporary touches. Two different views to pick from – city or pool. We’d pick the pool anytime.

All rooms come with a 42″ full HD Smart LED TV, and are equipped with wifi, so you can surf without worrying about chalking up your bills. Your basic needs are definitely met with pressed sheets, fresh towels, premium toiletries, and the other miscellaneous such as coffee and tea making facilities.

The strategic location makes it a refreshing alternative from the hotels in the city. Highly accessible via public transport with neighbouring shopping malls, food centres and offices, Park Hotel Alexandra is just minutes away from the city centre; you get the convenience, and you get the peace.

Both cocktails are served in old-school silver metal tins and decorated with real fruits. These beverages are actually very potent and you will get the bang for your buck!

Another drink that you should try is their spiced cocktail Hot Melons (S$18++) – a brilliant Asian fusion invention inspired by the liqueur affogato.

Muddled with chilli padi, shaken with dark rum and served with a soursop sorbet, the cocktail is a unique sweet-and-spicy concoction. The spiciness have been underwhelmed by the ice-cream so you do not have to worry about having your tongue on fire!

Or you can also savour the classic margarita, martini and mojito with an additional unexpected twist of your choice. Spiced mojito or mojito infused with peach or mixed berries, what say you?

Similarly, you could have an apple or lychee martini instead of the traditional one. Last but not least, enjoy either a mango or mixed berry margarita – or stick to the good old classics. These enthralling classic tipples are priced at S$18++ each too.

Named after Aqua Luna’s location, this golden-hued cocktail creation – an infusion of Grand Marnier liqueur with flamed Rosemary, pineapple juices, white rum and dark rum – is served in a classy wine glass and a hit amongst both the ladies and gentlemen.

Aqua Luna keeps its entire menu extremely affordable. We were pleasantly surprised by how generously portioned and appetising the unassuming Battered Cauliflower (S$8++) was.

Each crispy fried batter contained an impossibly tender cauliflower and we love how it packed a punch with its hints of fragrant curry and onion. The addictive vegetarian dish is served with an irresistible cheesy béchamel dipping sauce on the side. Sinful as it may sound, we would return to Aqua Luna just for this, because diet can (sometimes) wait.

Sick of the ubiquitous truffle fries? Give their heavenly Truffle Polenta Fries (S$10++) a shot and you definitely will not regret wasting your calories on this amazing savoury treat. Well, for those who always tell us truffle fries are too mainstream for their liking, this would do the trick for you!

For the uninitiated, polenta is a type of thick cornmeal that is most commonly used in Central Europe It is consumed in other parts of the world such as South America and the Middle East, and they may be named differently and more commonly known as cornmeal.

For those who are keen to try something different, you will enjoy these delightful polenta fries that are dusted in parmesan cheese and served with a dollop of homemade truffle-infused mayonnaise dipping sauce.

Oysters fan, please join us in feasting with these freshly shucked Seasonal Oysters (1/2 doz – S$24++) served au natural with a classic mignonette. Can you imagine slurping them juicy oysters while swimming? Oh god, the life!

Those who do not fancy the exquisite oysters can still find other seafood nibbles, such as the A Pint of Prawns (S$14++) served with cocktail sauce, and A Pot of Mussels (S$18++) – blue mussels that have been cooked with Chardonnay.

Of course, the carnivores can join us in feasting on the decadent “Dirty” Steak (S$36++) which is grilled to medium-rare and charred in the wood-fired oven while sitting atop charcoal. It is served with anchovy butter and a pinch of sea salt.

How awesome does steak by the pool sound, right? We are all so used to steak in fine restaurants, and this experience at Aqua Luna sure is a fresh breath of air.

On to the flatbreads now, my friends. Essentially wood-fired pizzas served fresh from the oven, these bar snacks are actually very filling and enjoyable with some cocktails (but of course).

There are a total of five flavours to choose from – Crabmeat & Artichoke (S$24++), Margarita (S$18++), Beef & Chilli (S$20++), Tiger Prawn & Pesto (S$24++) and Chorizo & Onion (S$18++).

It is also worth mentioning that the breads have been painstakingly proofed for at least three hours, hence giving rise to a light and crispy crust. And they are made fresh daily!

When daylight wanes away and night-time takes over, Aqua Luna transforms from a tropical paradise into a dimly lit romantic bar; the latter is how we will always remember Aqua Luna to be, as when we first saw the bar in its full glory against the golden sunset.

You should, too, drop by during the evening for a spectacular sunset experience – watch the sun descend right before your eyes and witness the landscape transform into mesmerising city lights with a glass of signature cocktail in hand.
