With numerous gelato joints opening up in Singapore in recent years, it’s safe to say that our country is going through a serious gelato fad. But, nobody’s complaining. In this hot and humid climate, we need a lot more than just chendol and teh bing to deal with the heat.

So, when we heard about a new gelato joint that specialises in botanical flavours, we were down for a visit. Named after the gorgeous butterfly, Monarchs & Milkweed Gelato is a new gelato boutique that specialises in botanical flavours. The concept reminds us of Birds of Paradise.

They churn out fresh gelato daily, every concoction promising utmost creaminess and unthinkable richness.

From the first step in, we were drawn to the minimalistic, laid-back ambience of this cafe. It was dressed in a very clean aesthetic, from its neutral-toned furniture to the light teal brick-patterned wall.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="width: 336px; height: 280px;"></ins>//

Moving on to the gelato, we had a really hard time choosing from the wide range of intriguing flavours. It didn’t help that every single flavour sounded phenomenal. With flavours like Tahitian Vanilla and Rhubarb Milk, we were 100% torn. Thankfully, the servers were super friendly and offered to let us try almost every flavour on display.

We settled on their Brown Butter Sage and Burnt White Chocolate (S$8/Double Scoop) in their house-made waffle cone (S$1).

We were sold on the first bite.

The Brown Butter Sage had a subdued caramelised profile, undercut by herbaceous tones. It was such an unusual yet stunning combination. The Burnt White Chocolate was just as formidable with its deep smoky flavour that mellowed the usually cloying sweetness of white chocolate.

Of course, not forgetting the waffle cone which was perfectly crispy and fragrant.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="width: 336px; height: 280px;"></ins>//

Because two scoops weren’t enough, we got another serving of Lavender and Chocolate Sorbet in a cup.

The Lavender was wonderfully perfumed with floral notes that weren’t too overpowering. This allowed the luscious milkiness of the gelato to really shine through. The Chocolate Sorbet is a superb dairy-free option for customers with dietary restrictions. Intensely rich and creamy, its deep cocoa profile will linger on your tastebuds long after you’re done.

Monarchs & Milkweed Gelato has certainly left their mark on us. Quality ingredients, warm service and alluring ambience — we’re absolutely sold.

Not to mention, they’re even having an opening promotion — enjoy a whopping 50% off your bill from 18th to 24th January 2020!

Hyde & Co. has long been one of our favourite minimalist cafe hang-outs in Singapore. Our love for this cafe stems from the fact that it reminds us strongly of quaint English cafes in London, similarly exuding a comforting and cosy atmosphere.

Imagine our excitement when we found out that Hyde & Co. will serve a new dinner menu from Wednesdays to Saturdays, from 6.30pm to 10.30pm! We could not be happier as we had a great time with the mains we had here previously. This festive season, Hyde & Co. will also be offering several value-for-money Christmas set dinner menus (which starts at S$68 nett for two).

Readers of Ladyironchef will receive 50% off your second main course (from the regular dinner menu) on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 31 January 2016 when you flash this post. Reservations are required to redeem this promotion.

From Nasi Lemak Risotto, to Beef Cheek Rendang, and Chilli Crab Pasta – here’s everything to love about Hyde & Co.’s new dinner menu.

BRAND NEW DINNER MAINS

Hyde & Co.’s head chef has a background in Italian cuisine and a Malay heritage, and he has married the flavours and techniques of these two cuisines together so flawlessly to create dishes for the dinner menu.

Together with the launch of this dinner menu, Hyde & Co. has also prepped a line of specialty tea-centric drinks to complement the otherwise heavier mains. While the drinks – The Addams Family (S$7.50) and Into The Woods (S$7.50) – were exemplary fruit-infused tea concoctions, the star of the new drinks menu is the All-Star Tea Affogato (S$7.50 each). They can well be desserts, too!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Named after Broadway musicals – Matilda, Millie, Charlie and Hamilton – they are all made with various teas and toppings with a side of premium vanilla bean ice cream. One of the stand-outs were Hamilton, made with an interesting Spiced Lapsang Souchong premium tea, paired with sesame seeds and chilli flakes.

Now, let’s go on to the main stars of the shows – the dinner dishes.

We have seen many remakes of risotto. But you guys, this will be the first time you ever see a Nasi Lemak Risotto (S$22). The grains are cooked with coconut, and you bet the fragrance is spot-on. When paired up with a runny poached egg, we call this a match made in heaven. Break the yolk and have it weaved in to the risotto. This dish comes with three juicy and plump sambal prawns and crispy anchovies.

Such a star you are, Nasi Lemak Risotto.

This dinner item is without the influence of any local flavours, but it tasted so good, we simply cannot leave it out of the equation. Instead of being drenched in cheeses, each macaroni is perfectly coated with just the right amount of cream cheese.

The aroma and taste of truffle oil in this plate sure kicked it up a notch for us. Baked with mushrooms and bread crumbs for added texture, Hyde & Co.’s Truffle Mac & Cheese (S$18) wins a nod from us.

No, there are no steaks in this menu, because they have something even more creative for the meat lovers – Beef Cheek Rendang (S$25).

This hearty dish features big chunks of beef with sweet potato mash. We would have preferred our beef to be more tender, though.

Truth be told, many have done their renditions of Chilli Crab Pasta. But Hyde & Co.’s version is an undisputed winner.

The Chilli Crab Pasta (S$21) features generous crab meat chunks tossed with al dante pasta with a mild spice level. Nothing extraordinary, but every bit comforting.

We never had a bad encounter with the fish dishes at Hyde & Co., so we had high expectations for the Assam Halibut (S$21). Thankfully, they nailed it once again.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Tender halibut cooked well and presented with a glistening white center, served with burnt cauliflower (that was strangely what we enjoyed most) and soba noodles. Instead of overpowering the dish, the assam sauce well brought out the natural sweetness of the fish. Nice balance there.

At just S$10, the lovely marinated Buffalo Wings – which makes a splendid sharing dish – is yours to share. It is served with chipotle BBQ sauce and garlic aioli; definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Vegetarians also have the option of Beetroot Salad (S$12) – mesclun, feta, walnuts, beetroot and cranberry vinaigrette. A classic dish that will always be well-coveted for its simplicity.

Hyde & Co.’s new dinner menu will be available from Wednesdays to Saturdays from 6.30pm – 10.30pm.

FESTIVE DINNER SETS THIS CHRISTMAS

If all of the Christmas set menus you have seen so far are too expensive, Hyde & Co. has got your back. They have three different sets starting from as low as S$68 for two people. Yes, that means each person only has to fork out S$34 for a three-course dinner – with no hidden charges!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The bakery first went the e-commerce way with an Instagram account, after which their fame propelled and finally led to the opening of its current flagship store.

Fluff Bakery sells homemade cakes and interesting local fusion cupcake flavours. At S$4 a piece, these cupcakes are handcrafted with quality ingredients, and the freshness is evident.

Coveted flavours include the Ondeh Ondeh, Teh Tarik, Salted Caramel, Maple Pecan Creme Brulee and Horlicks. The menu changes weekly, so be sure to check the menu online before heading down to avoid disappointment.

The people at Fluff Bakery are passionate in what they do, and their love for cupcakes shone through every single cupcake. Don’t their creations just look so lovely?

The bakery operates from 12pm daily until they are sold out, so it is best you head down early if you are keen on bagging one of their yummy bakes home. We don’t need worms for being early because worms are icky, but we want our cupcakes.

Tucked away in a small corner of Crawford Lane – just next to Tolido’s Espresso Nook – And All Things Delicious stands out with their attractive storefront. Once you step in, you will feel a sense of warmth and comfort, both from the enchanting smell of freshly-baked pastries to the overall cosy vibe of this halal-certified cafe.

Displayed beautifully in the shop is an impressive array of desserts ranging from pastries, scones to cakes. They also have a savoury menu, where you can pick from a selection from quiches and more.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Because they specialise in mainly cakes and pastries, we suggest digging straight into their dessert selection because it can do no wrong.

The Sticky Toffee Pudding (S$5.90) was so well-made, we finished it in a few bites. While we were slightly apprehensive about the generous drizzle of toffee sauce, we came to realize that the sauce was actually just right and the sweetness did not overwhelm us. The sponge cake underneath was nice and fragrant with evenly grounded pieces of dates.

What we loved most about And All Things Delicious is how unpretentious it is; just simple and wholesome pastries and cakes that people of all ages would love. For afternoons, you can hop on down and grab some Scones (S$5 for 2) with a cup of Iced Latte (S$5.50) and unwind with a book.

One of our favourites on the menu is the Beer Battered Fish & Chips. Instead of using the usual dory or sea bass, they use cod fish instead for a more refined taste. If you come in a bigger group, grab their Pulled Pork Sliders that cost a mere S$12 for 5 pieces, an extremely good deal!

As previously featured in our guide to the Most Unique Waffles in Singapore, the Butterscotch Popcorn Waffles is another must-try item on their menu. For other dessert or waffle offerings, the Affogato Waffles caught our attention too. Melted marshmallows top the freshly made waffle off with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Add the ‘affogato’ touch by pouring over a shot of espresso (served on the side) for a taste like no other.

Sitting in the heart of Crawford, just 5 minutes away from Bugis and Haji Lane, Tolido’s Espresso Nook has its series of specialty brews that come with photo-worthy latte art.

But there is definitely more than coffee here here. Small as it may be, it is actually pretty cosy with the bustling activities taking place indoors. Less indie, but no less happening. It is a familiar haunt for regulars and friends, and the warmth of the crowd really grew on us. It felt like crashing a party, but less intimidating and still reserving your own space.

If you are in the neighbourhood and like us, you do not fancy the crowd, escape to Tolido’s Espresso Nook for a cuppa and some casual but gratifying food. Here are some of our favourite items on the menu:

Rosti. Rosti anytime. Tolido’s do a really mean rendition and we fell head over heels in love with the texture – crispy on the surface (but of course), and soft and warm when you sink your teeth in. Served with an egg, the Rosti comes in various combinations – with cheesy sausage (S$14.90), smoked Bratswurst (S$16.90) and smoked salmon (S$20.90).

We also had the Turkey Ham Mushroom Cream (S$9.50) which is a hearty serving of penne pasta covered with cream and generous chunks of mushrooms and turkey ham. We heard the Bacon Arrabiata (S$10.50) is fairly decent too!

There is also an all-day breakfast menu with your regular favourites like pancakes and eggs. Every item comes with a price tag that does not scare, but you might have a tough time picking just one. There are Tolido Pancakes (S$10.50), Croissant with Scrambled Eggs (S$9.50) and French Toast (S$8.90); and more.
