If you were one of the customers who was devastated when Meidi-Ya announced that they will be shutting the doors of their Liang Court outlet, fret not.

Meidi-Ya will be opening a 2-storey flagship store at Millenia Walk in August 2020, right across from Harvey Norman! The soft-launch date for the new outlet is in May 2020 (the exact date has not been confirmed). Something to look forward to, aye?

Meanwhile, if you still need to grab some Japanese groceries and goods from Meidi-Ya, you can head to their other outlet at Great World City. There is also a Hokkaido Dosanko Plaza within the same mall where you can grab Hokkaido specialty snacks, such as Shiroi Koibito (White Choco Sand).

Perhaps, these would make up for the cancelled travel plans to Japan due to Covid-19?

It was yet another day fun-filled day with 20 of our readers who joined us for a Food Journey hosted by Millenia Walk. We had a taste of three restaurants’ signature items and new dishes, and we shared our opinions and input with one another.

When foodies get together, everyone just forgets our worries and pig out together. We ventured into Fika Swedish Café & Bistro, elemen and Tart Blanc for a diversified taste of all that Millenia Walk has to offer.

With so many restaurants and different varieties of food to choose from at Millenia Walk, we trust our readers had a good time there, just like we did! Thank you to all who took time off to spend your Saturday with us; we couldn’t be happier to meet each and every one of you!

As we kicked off this gastronomical journey, we could see everyone happily settled, hungry and awaiting Fika’s delicious food. The clean-cut Swedish-style interior of the restaurant is an extremely comforting one that we’ve always loved, and it’s a great place for a gathering with your muslim friends as Fika is certified halal

We were first served a relatively light salad to start – Långedrag. This salad was a refreshing mix of salad greens, Swedish fresh-water shrimps, a sliced hardboiled egg, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, leek, olives, Swedish roe and crisp rye bread.

As everyone gobbled this down, we were served the next course of Fika’s most well-loved dish – Swedish Meatballs.

What made the meatballs extra special was the tasty cream sauce, together with lingonberry jam. Together, they were James Dean and Audrey Hepburn – the perfect pairing!

While we were finishing up with this course, we were presented with a glistening glory – Steak with Warm Potato Salad. The Black Angus Sirloin had a big dollop of garlic butter on top that melted beautifully all over the meat.

The garlic butter was enough to be the talk of the room. There were big chunks of actual garlic in it and when eaten with the steak and potatoes, it was sheer happiness for us all!

Every table had their eyes glued onto the Kladdkaka (Swedish Brownie) when they were brought out from the kitchen plate after plate. The special Swedish family recipe meant a brownie that is rich without being overly dense.

Everyone looked pretty satisfied by then, but thankfully, most were still hungry for more. Because that means more food; what is a food trail if we only stop at one place, right?

elemen is a new addition to Millenia Walk. Priding themselves as a meat-less restaurant that focuses a lot on the benefits of vegetables and other natural ingredients, we were all lucky to be treated to carefully prepared and amazingly plated vegetarian dishes here.

We started off with the elemen Starter – a trio of green bean paste with cucumber and teriyaki sauce, sesame tofu with sesame dressing and alfalfa sprouts and lastly, cherry tomato soaked in plum sauce that bursts upon bite.

We could all taste the strong Japanese flavours and influences in the starting appetiser and could not wait for our main course to come. It is one of those rare moments in life where we were truly excited about vegetarian food.

We were each served a tasting portion of elemen’s bestselling ‘Main’ – Mushroom Risotto with Black Truffle.

This risotto is not made the conventional way and has a interesting textural variety from the vegetables and rice itself. The truffle flavours were pleasant and really enhanced the dish.

Some readers loved it so much, they had more than one serving! And so did we. Oops! Couldn’t help it, really. You have to try this for yourself to believe it.

We ended off with a dessert and their specialty drink. Our dessert of Chilled Coconut Puree was the best-selling one in the restaurant. True to its hype, the rich coconut puree was complemented with a scoop of peach gum, said to have the same beauty benefits as bird’s nest! Such a treat it was, and once again, most of us had a second helping!

And a cup of specially-concocted Sea Salt Coffee ended our meal at elemen; the sea salt really brought out the nutty flavours of their coffee and we were all pleasantly surprised by how drinkable it was despite its intense caffeine.

By this time, we were almost full, but not before we had our decadent tarts from Tart Blanc, an artisanal dessert cafe that specializes in French-style tarts.

Every tart from Tart Blanc is made with extreme intricacy and all of us were eyeing the tarts, even before we settled down.

We had two of Tart Blanc’s specialty tarts – Blood Orange Matcha Tart and Peach and Salted Egg Yolk Tart. The latter was served to us warm for the optimal taste.

We were so amazed by the use of salted egg yolk and peach in one tart; it was a lethal combination that got us hooked. We really loved everything about it. From the slightly gushing and creamy salted egg yolk center to the butter crust, everyone was happily gobbling these tarts up and they were practically gone within seconds!

The Blood Orange Matcha tart has long been one of the most popular tarts at Tart Blanc and it came as no surprise that it was well-received. All of us enjoyed the tart and acidity of the blood orange center, evened out by the crusty matcha tart base.

It was an unforgettable afternoon of non-stop eating with all our readers and we hoped you had as much fun as we did. We are ever thankful of all the support from you lovely people.

SCRUMPTIOUS ITALIAN DINNER AT BEL MONDO

MIHARU SAPPORO RAMEN

The first few brands that we fell in love with when the ramen trend hit Singapore was Miharu Sapporo Ramen. It used to sit along Robertson Quay, at Gallery Hotel. When the hotel ceased operations, Miharu fans were left upset and deprived of their favourite Sapporo ramen. However the good news is that NOW, they are exclusively at Millenia Walk and you can enjoy a bowl of Miharu’s goodness!

Rejoice, ramen fans! The outlet at Millenia Walk is slightly bigger and very comfortable, while your favourite ramen with the famous Nishiyama noodles specially imported from Japan, and rich miso broth is still flavourful as always. Our favourite ramen is most definitely the Tokusen Miso Ramen with a special miso blend (S$14.80++).

Looking to grab a quick breakfast or some bread to take home after work or just to snack during the day? Pullman Bakery is your answer. We love this Hokkaido bakery for its premium offerings of breads and cakes.

The Hokkaido Curry Bun (S$2.50) is its bestseller, and because the curry paste is air-flown from Hokkaido in limited quantities, these buns are often snapped up by midday. Fastest fingers first, so we’d say: grab it in the morning while it is still warm and steamy on the inside – definitely your perfect breakfast on the go. RAKUZEN JAPANESE RESTAURANT

Now, Rakuzen is a hidden gem! This Japanese restaurant at Millenia Walk has an amazing variety in its menu that is pleasantly affordable. We are regulars, and as much as we’d love to keep this place a selfish secret, we know it deserves your attention. Their set lunches in particular are very value for money!

There is this highly popular Maru Bento set that is enough for two to share. It consists of yasai tempura, sashimi, a plate of sushi assortment, chicken stew, grilled unagi, chawanmushi and a side salad and dessert- all these at only S$45++! And if you are game for some maki rolls, the Aburi Beef Roll ($18++) is the absolute crowning glory!

“Kids Eat Free Saturdays” sees that every child (<12yo) gets a free chawanmushi.

TEPPEI SYOKUDO

Teppei first rose to fame with its super value-for-money chirashi-don at its nondescript outlet in Tanjong Pagar. Long lines have often formed during lunch hours, but not all are fans of queueing. Let’s do a takeaway instead!

Over at Millenia Walk, Teppei Syokudo is a hassle-free outlet where you can choose to eat in the outlet or takeaway your favourite sashimi rice bowl, and it is simply perfect for days when you need to pack lunch back to the office. Everyone’s favourite Kaisen-don is at S$16 for a serving, and you can top up S$8 for some chopped negitoro (tuna with spring onions). But if you do not want raw fish, sure, there is the Katsu-don (S$15.80) and Saba Miso Bento (S$12.80).

At Teppei, the “All Things Japanese Fridays” promotion features a S$20 Dinner Set – a serving of Kaisen-don with extra sashimi topping, and a drink. Superb value, indeed.

SABOTEN

If you have a taste for tonkatsu – deep fried breaded pork – then you will be happy to know that Saboten is opening at Millenia Walk. Famed for its many choices of tonkatsu sets, Saboten remains a perennial favourite among diners all these years.

Not a fan of pork? No problem. Saboten also offers deep fried breaded prawns, salmon and oysters. There will surely be something to suit your taste buds.

CHABUTON

Named as “King of Ramen” by TV Champion, TV Tokyo Station, Chef Yasuji Morizumi has been expanding his ramen empire in Japan, America and Thailand. His signature range of ramen include Tonkotsu Ramen, Shio Tonkotsu Ramen, Shoyu Ramen, and Shoyu Zaru Ramen.

Tomi Sushi is an under-the-radar Japanese restaurant that has been around for a while. We love its simplicity, and it is one restaurant that we often turn to when we need some fuss-free Japanese food. While there is nothing too lavish about having a meal at Tomi, you can still expect hearty servings at friendly price tags for a decent Japanese meal.

One of the things that we did not know about Millenia Walk, until we went on a food tour around the mall recently, is that there are so many good dessert hideouts that will make you go weak in the knees.

Among all the unique food places that we have tried at Millenia Walk, the two joints that stood out were Patisserie G and Tart Blanc. The former is a locally-founded patisserie that offers an amazing array of French cakes, pastries and desserts; the latter is an absolute gem that specialises in tart-based desserts. We are head over heels in love with Tart Blanc’s raspberry praline tart!

And to our Muslim friends, when you dine at Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro, be sure to save room for their red velvet cake and cheesecake. Rainbow cake lovers have to try MEDZS’ rendition, which is soft, moist, and pretty. And how can we say no to the freshly baked waffles from Commune Cafe & Bistro No. 50?

Other desserts that are worth trying at Millenia Walk are the chocolate lava cakes from 3 Inch Sin; lemongrass & ginger ice cream from Ruby, Thai Inspired Cuisine; and the panna cotta from Bel Mondo.

A cosy Italian restaurant with hearty Italian fare and a good beer is all we need sometimes to make our days better. Mark Bel Mondo down, and head down on Tuesdays to enjoy some homemade pizzas, together with an all day 1-for-1 on selected beers and wines.

Hands up, Panna Cotta fans! Bel Mondo wants to excite your taste buds with their rendition. Thursdays will be made better with their 1-for-1 Panna Cotta, originally worth S$10++ each.

Commune Cafe & Bistro No. 50 is a hidden gem in Millenia Walk. We love it because it offers really good brews, and even more because it is a perfect spot to chill-out with friends over jazz and blues.

On Monday, Commune Cafe has a sandwich and latte set for S$11, while you can enjoy 20% off waffles and cakes with any coffee/tea purchased when you are there on Thursday.

Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro has been around for a while and they have built up a strong following for its Swedish halal food. If you are not a fan yet, maybe it is time to head down for a meal and to enjoy some little perks for the month of July.

From choux puffs glazed with caramel to lemon cheesecake and macarons, Patisserie G has top quality sweets, and is one of our favourite dessert places in Singapore.

It has recently introduced a range of sandwiches (S$9.50 – S$12) and they make the perfect quick and casual meal. On Mondays, get freshly brewed coffee/tea (S$4.50) on the house with every order of gourmet sandwich. If you are at Millenia Walk on a Thursday, Patisserie G is also offering free freshly brewed coffee/tea (S$4.50) when you spend S$10 on cakes/pastries in a single receipt.

We are a huge fan of tarts, so we were thrilled to discover Tart Blanc at Millenia Walk. Well, it is going to be a secret no more, but this cute little patisserie cafe that specialises in tarts deserves a huge shout-out. Best sellers include Banana Chocolate Silk Tart (S$7) and Blood Orange Matcha Tart (S$7.50), but we’d suggest making a trip back every week to try something new.

On Thursdays, Tart Blanc participates in the Sweet Treats promotion with a buy-1-tart-and-get-the-second-tart-at-50% promotion. Let’s all do a tarts party!
