The Mad Hatter-inspired cafe, Hatter Street in Kovan has rebranded to Hooloo—a new cafe serving rice bowls, bagels, desserts, waffles and ice cream.

Hooloo is having a soft launch and will only be serving only desserts, waffles and ice cream for now. It will officially open on 10 October 2021 and the new menu will include savoury mains as well.

Hatter Street has got us feeling like we fell down the rabbit hole alongside Alice with its thematic interior and whimsical desserts. The new Hooloo is completely different; they opted for a holographic decor.

Hooloo has taken over the space in Kovan while Hatter Street will pivot as an online cake shop.

What you can look forward to at Hooloo by Hatter Street:

Delicious waffles with generous scoops of ice cream

There is a selection of savouries including rice bowls and bagels

Dogs are allowed at the two outdoor tables

Muslim consumer compliance verified

If you love Hatter Street’s signature waffles and ice cream, you will be glad to know that Hooloo will be offering them on the new menu. A single scoop of ice cream is priced at S$4.50 while you can get the waffles with a scoop of ice cream at S$9.90.

Some of the ice cream flavours at Hoo Loo include:

Lavender

Milo Dinosaur

Toasted Marshmallow

Milk

Pandan

Coconut Sorbet

Hooloo is also offering coffee using beans from Toby’s Estate and the options include Latte (S$6.50), Chai Late (S$7.50) and Hot Chocolate (S$7.50).

When one mentions waffles, the image that usually comes to mind is a plate of freshly made waffles drenched in saccharine maple syrup or topped with ice cream. But contrary to what you may think, waffles can also be enjoyed paired with savoury ingredients instead of always sweet ones.

Savoury waffles are not uncommon but they are not as readily available as their sugary counterparts. There are a number of places that serve up some pretty solid chicken waffles but don’t restrict yourselves to just that; some places even have some pretty interesting creations such as duck confit waffles, smoked salmon waffles and chicken waffles topped with kimchi!

If you’re someone who doesn’t have a sweet tooth and you’d like to have a savoury waffle for a change, we are here to help you suss out where you can find some of the best savoury waffles in Singapore. Here is our list of 9 places in Singapore to get savoury waffles.

CLINTON STREET BAKING COMPANY & RESTAURANT

If you have a voracious appetite for fried chicken, you’d definitely love Clinton Street Baking Company and Restaurant’s chicken and waffles. The chicken accompanying the waffles here is huge! We also love how well seasoned the chicken is and how each bite is chock full of flavour. As each serving is pretty massive, we recommend those of you who have smaller appetites to share this with someone.

DUCKLAND

Duckland’s name is an easy giveaway to what waffles they specialise in — duck waffles! Their Duck Confit & Waffle features a fork-tender confit duck leg that is encrusted in a smoky, crisp skin that brims with intense flavours of duck fat. We recommend drizzling some of the provided maple syrup over the waffle for a whole new experience.

OVEREASY

Serving popular American diner fare, OverEasy’s Momma’s Chicken & Waffles served with warm maple butter is undoubtedly one of the better Chicken & Waffles on this list. The chicken here is fried to a satisfying golden crisp which is further enhanced by the syrupy maple butter.

STATELAND COFFEEHOUSE

Ever heard of a Korean fried chicken waffle? We didn’t until we came across Stateland Coffeehouse and here, they have a completely unheard of waffle creation — Spicy Korean Fried Chicken with Kimchi Slaw! We love how the kimchi adds an interesting tangy touch to the entire dish that surprisingly works. If kimchi isn’t your thing, they also have the basic Korean Fried Chicken Waffle and Soy Korean Fried Chicken Waffles.

The Beast’s Chicken and Waffles is made using their Signature fried chicken.
It would be an absolute crime to do up a list of places that sells waffles and leave out Waffletown. The retro fast food joint is famous for its American-style dishes that mostly consist of waffles. Aside from the usual array of ice cream waffles, they sell a really mean chicken waffle that we honestly can say is one of the best in Singapore.

We love how they paired their fluffy waffles with savoury smoked salmon as well as two beautifully poached eggs. It’s incredibly satisfying to break open the egg and watch all that runny yolk coat the waffles and salmon.

Situated just a stone’s throw away from the ever-so-popular Blk 85 Fengshan Food Centre at Bedok North is a newly-opened carnival-themed café, Sir Stamford Waffles, which serves waffles, ice cream, coffee and more.

Do not be confused by the name of this café—Sir Stamford Raffles did not open this café—but rather, the people behind Hatter Street Bakehouse and Café did.

Essentially a carnival-themed café, Sir Stamford Waffles is well-furnished and boasts a bright and colourful interior with huge posters with whimsical illustrations on their walls. The space in the café was small and can fit just 4-5 groups of people, but they have seats outside too.

Sir Stamford Waffles bear great similarity to their sister café in terms of their range of desserts and coffee, but with a twist of local flavours, as their name suggests. Specialising in waffles, they offered several noteworthy signature waffle sets such as The Miraculous Merlion (S$15.90) and the Kopi Kusu (S$15.90).

They serve coffee and tea too, perfect for those just looking for something to sip on in Sir Stamford Waffles whilst escaping the glaring heat!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Remember all those cheese-pull videos? Well, now you can achieve that in real life and this dish sure left us with a cheesy grin.

The Pork Belly Miso (S$16) was an interesting creation that we had to try. Consisting of extremely tender kakuni braised pork belly, soft egg, cucumber edamame salad, miso cream and nori atop well-cooked rice, we particularly enjoyed the topping of ramen crisps as it added a nice, crunchy texture to the dish.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

But for the price point, we did feel that the portion served was not very substantial and this is perhaps something that could be improved for a better dining experience.

We ended our meal with the Matcha Berry Homemade Mochi Waffles with Salted Speculoos Ice Cream (S$12.50).

This was indeed a heavenly pairing and we were very pleased with the elegant presentation of the dish. Furthermore, the dish was oh so tasty and satisfying, which only justified any weight gain.

New kid on the block, CATfeine, is nestled in The Hillford along Jalan Jurong Kechil. Contrary to its name, nothing about the cafe’s interior design reminds you of a cat but the idea is there—a cosy environment coupled with relaxing vibes to encourage their guests to lounge around.

Other than specialty tea and coffee, CATfeine’s also offers sweet and savoury bites in the likes of waffles, pies and cakes.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Curious about how the cafe got its name? The cafe was set up by a pair of cat-loving couple who were inspired by their other passion—Coffee And Tea. Add the first letters together and you get the acronym CAT.

The two-month-old cafe opened its doors in early May this year and has since earned the approval of residents living nearby who come here for a chat with their friends or to read the morning papers.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Sit by the floor-to-ceiling glass window which overlooks the busy main road or find yourself an empty table at the cafe. We liked how the tables are not cramped together, which makes it comfortable to have a private conversation with your dining partner.

If there is a must-try at CATfeine, it has to be their waffles. The beautiful presentation alone is enough to impress us and we are glad to share that the taste did not disappoint either.

Out of the few waffle choices on the menu, we decided to go for their popular Sweet Summer (S$15) which came with orange, grapefruit, fresh berries, rich lavender ice cream and crispy waffles that are made upon order.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We found it rather helpful as it gave us a better understanding of what we were having, allowing us to better appreciate the subtleties in flavours from chocolate sourced from different parts of the world.

The Ice Cream Waffle (S$14) comes with two ice cream flavours of your choice. We went for two different dark chocolate varietals with cocoa percentages from both extremes—the Madagascar Dark Chocolate (64%) and the Venezuela Dark Chocolate (72%).

Both flavours of ice cream were so incredibly decadent and we liked that they were not overly rich and sweet. The Madagascar Dark Chocolate struck a perfect balance between sweet, bitter and chocolatey, whereas the Venezuela Dark Chocolate was just slightly bitter in comparison. It was the best chocolate ice cream we have ever had.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The Premium flavours are each priced at S$5.80 and the Classics at S$4.80 each.

The popsicles are Poppy Pops’ specialty. We got ourselves a Poppy Trio (S$6), Poppy Classic with added on Maple Butter Waffles (S$7.80) and Truffle Fries (S$12).

We were stoked to dig into our Honey Butter Waffles with Lemon Blueberry Poppy topped with Milk Chocolate and Salted Biscuits.

Unfortunately, there was nothing extraordinary about the truffle fries and S$12 for a serving like that may be a tad hefty.

All in all, we found delight in the complimentary Wi-Fi and a cozy ambiance. It is certainly charming to discover a homely place within all the mayhem.

Singaporeans seem to have an unfathomable appetite for waffles. Over the years, many cafes and dessert joints have boasted the iconic dish in numerous innovative ways to satisfy our cravings (and Instagram feeds), but it is a shame that in the midst of all the hype, many people have neglected one of Singapore’s oldest fried chicken and waffle joint.

Waffletown at Balmoral Plaza is a family-owned retro fast food restaurant that has been serving American food such as burgers, fried chicken and Belgian waffles for the last thirty odd years in Singapore.

At Waffletown, expect no gimmicks, just great food and possibly the best (and simplest) waffles around.

The first thing that greeted us at Waffletown was the strong whiff of fried chicken goodness coupled with the sweet, doughy smell from freshly made waffles—we had officially arrived in Heaven.

To cool ourselves down, we started off with one of their signature Belgium waffles topped with ice cream (S$2.90). At first glance, you may assume this dish to be immensely basic—well it is—but it was so good.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Raspberry ripple flavoured ice cream atop a toasty and crunchy waffle. Perfect for a hot day—or any day for that matter.

The two-piece fried chicken (S$8.50) was beyond amazing. Marinated and deep-fried to perfection, the chicken was super crispy on the outside but moist and succulent on the inside. An added bonus is that it was not the slightest bit oily.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The sides that came along with it were decent but nothing much to shout about.

We also got the Super Value Meal (S$6.80) which consisted of a deep-fried boneless chicken thigh, white rice and a fried egg with a runny yolk. For what it’s worth, we think that it is a pretty good deal considering the large portion size.

The chicken was deep fried to perfection and the egg was cooked just right. However, we wish the rice could have been more aromatic and flavourful to better complement the other two components.

Waffletown was truly a breath of fresh air. A cosy eatery devoid of the hustle and bustle and pretentious aesthetics, serving comfort food at reasonable prices. We will definitely be back.

When prompted about good cafes to visit in Singapore, rarely does a café outside of the East or Central Singapore come to mind; and especially not one from Sembawang.

Common Chefs Café & Bakery is an exception and it will be a good enough reason for you to make a trip down to this Northern part of Singapore.

A café plus bakery, Common Chefs Café & Bakery offers a wide spread of Western dishes, drinks, delightful desserts at affordable prices. Here’s what to expect if you are taking a trip down.

The Single Cheese Burger (S$13 for beef, S$12 for chicken and S$11 for fish) features a juicy single patty packed together with freshly sliced tomatoes, cheddar cheese, mustard, mesclun salad and ketchup in a beautifully buttered brioche bun. All burgers come with fries on the side.

We thoroughly enjoyed the beef patty which was extremely tender and bursting with flavour. For an additional S$1, we upgraded the regular fries to truffle fries. While it was decent, it was not the best truffle fries we’ve tried.

As matcha lovers, we could not help but order the Matcha Latte (S$5) which was not too sweet and the notes of the matcha really came through.

Common Chefs Café & Bakery gives you the opportunity to customise your own Dessert Waffle. We decided on the charcoal waffle (S$7.50) with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream (S$3.50 for a single scoop; S$6 for a double scoop) topped with a wonderful caramel sauce.

As the salted caramel ice cream (and caramel sauce) was surprisingly sweet, we were glad that we chose the charcoal waffle as its neutral and muted taste complemented the sweets perfectly.

A cafe specialising in French bakes and Instagram-worthy desserts, Les Pâtisseries is not new to the cafe industry. Having relocated from Toa Payoh, the cafe has since joined the long list of F&B establishments along Upper Thomson Road.

Their desserts, breakfast dishes and All-Day mains are priced below S$20, making it a hit with the younger crowd who would hang around for Sunday brunch or afternoon tea session with their friends.

Featuring clean lines and a minimalistic interior, Les Pâtisseries is spacious to boot which makes it comfortable for guests to walk around. We love the addition of a sparkling marble countertop and vintage, industrial metal cage pendant lights.

The Thai Milk Earl Grey Waffle (S$15.90) comes with crispy earl grey waffle, two scoops of rich Thai Milk Tea ice cream, almond slices and a macaron.

We thoroughly enjoyed the waffle but recommend sharing it among friends as the rich flavours can get heavy on the palatte.

Other waffle choices you can get there include Chocolate Indulgence (S$15.90), Waffle Banoffee (S$14.50) and Summer Berries & Maple Waffle (S$13.50). Diners can create their own waffles with various waffle and ice cream flavours as well.

Something else you may want to keep a lookout for is the Matcha Tart (S$4.50). This is a seasonal special which was available when we visited the cafe. We love the distinct layers of matcha, chocolate and wafer which came with great textures and taste.

Joining the bustling cafe scene in the east is Routesixtysix, a newly opened neighbourhood cafe that serves mainly delectable waffles, ice cream of many interesting flavours and a range of house brews.

The small yet cosy cafe is less than 10 minutes walk from Bedok MRT Station and is situated just across the street from FATCAT Ice Cream Bar. Visitors can expect the cafe to start serving brunch items from May 2017.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We were first intrigued by the cafe’s unique name, which appears to be inspired from the famous Route 66 highway in the US. The interior reflects a modern industrial outlook complete with cement walls, exposed light bulbs and wooden furnitures.

We opted for the Red Velvet Waffle and two scoops of ice cream (S$12.90+). Routesixtysix uses wooden boards as plates for their waffles, adhering to the cafe’s theme.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Beyond its lovely presentation, we were impressed with the taste of the waffle as well. While the edges were crispy and break off with a crackle, the waffle interior was soft and warm.

The ice cream flavours we picked were Rocky Road and Honey Lavender. Rocky Road is a rich chocolate flavour which goes extremely well with the Red Velvet Waffle. On the flip side, Honey Lavender is a little too sweet for our liking.

Of course, the best companion to dessert has to be coffee! The cafe’s Hot Cappuccino (S$4.20+) was a delight. We enjoyed the bitter and creamy tones from the espresso and steamed milk.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The sweet treats at Sunday Folks do not just look good – they taste good too. The folks at Sunday Folks aim to present their desserts in the freshest form, and this vision had soon became their winning recipe.

Indeed, waffles will only be baked after your order is taken and the same applies to the preparation of the freshly churned ice cream. As a result, a minimum waiting time of 15 minutes is required and subjected to increase when volume of orders is high.

There are only six ice cream flavours to choose from – Dark Chocolate, Earl Grey Lavender, Roasted Pistachio, Sea Salt Gula Melaka and Summer Strawberries – and each portion comes with preselected toppings. Have your tasty ice cream concoction in a cup (S$7.20) or handmade cone (S$7.20).

You can also have your ice cream on a waffle slice (S$8.80) or two slices (S$11.80) – they will be paired with blueberries, sliced strawberries, maple syrup and chocolate hazelnut sauce.

After the resounding success of their first outlet at Grandstand, Dancing Crab has since opened a brand new outlet at Orchard Central, replacing the space where Noodle Stories used to be. Dancing Crab is known to be one of the best Cajun-Creole restaurants in Singapore, pampering its patrons with authentic Louisianan cuisine.

Now, Dancing Crab in Orchard Central is also open for lunch every day, and you can expect a list of affordable lunch items, featuring their same fresh seafood and ingredients. Some new dishes have also been added to the existing menu, including new flavours for their ever-popular seafood boil.

Here are some highlights and dishes we loved at Dancing Crab, and there is no reason you wouldn’t too! Time to get your hands dirty, pals!

[ GIVEAWAY ] We are giving away S$250 Dancing Crab dining vouchers. Leave a comment below, and share this post on your Facebook timeline to win. More details on the giveaway at the end of this post.

A definite thirst-quencher is Dancing Crab’s range of colourful lemonades, served in a mason jar. As the seafood and dishes can be quite heavy in flavour, the lemonades are your best bet to wash down the rich tastes.

They offer a range of homemade lemonades such as the classic Fizzy Lemonade (S$4), our favourite Strawberry Lemonade (S$4) and the unique Key Lime Pie Lemonade (S$4). In Singapore’s relentlessly humid weather, a cup of ice cold lemonade is not only good for the soul, but for your Instagram too. Just how pretty are they?

The new lunch menu offers mains that mostly cost S$15 and below. With a pocket-friendly menu, be treated to generous servings of New Orleans-style fare like fish tacos and heartier shrimp dishes.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

The Fish Tacos (S$11) has the option of fried or grilled fish and is served on a bed of sliced cabbage and topped off with onions and red peppers. This dish is great for those who do not want an overly heavy lunch.

If you are feeling ravenous during lunch, opt for their rice dishes, especially the Shrimp Etoufee (S$13). This is the pinnacle of comfort food, where the medley of flavours will immediately remind you of home. Not to mention that this dish also features a really generous amount of shrimps that will most certainly fill you up.

Shrimp lovers also have another choice of tasty Creole Black Pepper Shrimp and Rice. Accompanied with deep-fried bananas fritters (that tastes just like Singapore’s delicious Goreng Pisang), black beans and a side of mango salsa, we loved that this dish is a marirage of contrasting flavours. Wash this down with a cup of their refreshing lemonade and we promise you you will be recharged for the rest of the day.

We were wowed by the huge serving of Chicken & Waffles (S$15) at Dancing Crab, one of the best non-seafood dishes here. The batter on the chicken reminded us of the ones we had at New York City, and the accompanying sauces took this dish to a whole new level. It is indeed unexpected for a specialised seafood restaurant to dish such a mind-blowing rendition of fried chicken, and as much as it sounds funny, we will totally return to Dancing Crab for this very Chicken & Waffles.

Fans of seafood rolls, listen up. The Popcorn Shrimp Po’ Boy Sandwich (S$15) looks set to be a winner. Featuring a generous serving of fried shrimp cocooned in a buttery toasted brioche, this is what heaven is, and we’d gladly ditch the idea of dinner at a fine dining restaurant for a fuss-free Popcorn Shrimp Po’ Boy Sandwich fix.

The team at Dancing Crab has upped the ante of the classic Cornbread (S$5) by tweaking the ingredients so that the cornbread tastes as close to the version in U.S. as it can be. This is a splendid sharing portion if you are dining in a bigger group, and be sure to dip the bread into the cream sauce for a more fulfilling bite.

Now, we are on to the best stuff! Dancing Crab offers a variety of seafood boils that features premium shellfish and crustaceans such as Dungeness Crab, Sri Lankan Crab, Boston Lobster and even the highly sought after Crystal Crab. The boils that they offer are definitely the star of the menu, and it is the reason many flock to Dancing Crab for.

A seafood boil is best enjoyed ‘messily’ with your bare hands. The seafood and other ingredients will be spilled out on the table and to achieve the ultimate experience here, consume the dish the classic way – with your bare hands. Trust us when we say that the food will taste better when you eat it this way, where you can get the full flavours out from the seafood, especially the crabs and lobsters. Of course, sharing it with your loved ones is the cherry on top; communal dining at its best, we’d say!

We had the classic Combo Bag 1 (S$80) that features a full Sri Lankan Crab, 300g of prawns, 250g of mussels with potatoes, corn, carrots and sausages. This bag is good for about 2-3 pax, but some can even finish it up on their own! You can choose between different sauces, and while the signature cajun sauce is the killer, we highly recommend a go at their delicious new addition – the Spicy Miso Butter. Expect intense flavours that will only leave you wanting more.

For garlic lovers, the Zesty Garlic Butter sauce comes with generous amounts of chopped garlic that makes your seafood boil, of choice, extra tasty and fragrant. The Lobster Combo (S$121) includes a huge Boston Lobster with the same accompanying ingredients. Lobster and garlic is a sure-win combo and we could not stop singing praises of how tasty this sauce is.

Combo Bag 2 (S$40) is a lot more affordable and it comes with 300g of prawns, 250g of mussels, 250g of clams, potatoes, corn and sausages.

End your meal off with Dancing Crab’s delectable Beignets (S$6). Beignets are essentially deep-fried choux pastry, finished off with icing sugar. The beignets here reminded us of freshly prepared doughnuts and we loved how fluffy these ones were. Good desserts need not be fancy, as long as they taste good!

Of the many Louisiana seafood restaurants in town, Dancing Crab has the most competitive prices without compromising on the quality of their ingredients and seafood. And with the introduction of new lunch options, burning a hole in your pocket is the least of your worries now.
