Local cafe famed for their specialty desserts – Sunday Folks – opened its doors about a year ago at Chip Bee Gardens and took our nation by storm with its irresistibly delicious sweets.

Café hoppers and foodies alike flocked to the spacious café to sample Sunday Folks’ delectable offerings of freshly baked Belgian waffles and mouthwatering ice cream. The one-year-old café’s menu is fairly limited – there are only six ice cream flavours – yet sees no lack of customers till date.

The sweet treats at Sunday Folks do not just look good – they taste good too. The folks at Sunday Folks aim to present their desserts in the freshest form, and this vision had soon became their winning recipe.

Indeed, waffles will only be baked after your order is taken and the same applies to the preparation of the freshly churned ice cream. As a result, a minimum waiting time of 15 minutes is required and subjected to increase when volume of orders is high.

There are only six ice cream flavours to choose from – Dark Chocolate, Earl Grey Lavender, Roasted Pistachio, Sea Salt Gula Melaka and Summer Strawberries – and each portion comes with preselected toppings. Have your tasty ice cream concoction in a cup (S$7.20) or handmade cone (S$7.20).

You can also have your ice cream on a waffle slice (S$8.80) or two slices (S$11.80) – they will be paired with blueberries, sliced strawberries, maple syrup and chocolate hazelnut sauce.

Since the start of the year, I’ve made a promise to eat less ‘Western‘ food, and try more of other cuisines. I think I have been doing quite well so far.

But there are some days when you just feel like having a hearty plate of Italian pasta. I was craving for Italian food when I met the folks from BigDeal for lunch, so I suggested going to Da Paolo La Terrazza at Chip Bee Gardens.

The place here is different from Da Paolo Restaurant & Bistro Bar. Whereas the restaurant at Rochester Park has a huge al fresco dining area surrounded by greeneries, Da Paolo La Terrazza is slightly smaller with options of eating indoors for a more formal dinner, or dining at the tranquil al fresco area where you sit along the tree-lined street.

Italian food at Da Paolo restaurant. Can you imagine me rubbing my hands with glee?

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like Italian food, anyone who can say no to the best Linguine Al Granchio, anyone who can refuse to eat a slice of the best pizza, anyone who can resist having tiramisu for desserts. This is Italian food, for crying out loud; nobody, and I repeat, nobody can dislike Italian food.

Okay, I shall stop declaring my love for Italian food before you start to think that I am a psycho who goes around trying to convince everyone that it is the best cuisine. For your information, I love French food too. But that’s another story.

Anyway, back to Da Paolo La Terrazza. The set lunch is available at $24++ (for pasta) and $32++ (for meat/seafood). From what I understand, it changes periodically, but there will always be five appetisers, five main courses and two desserts to choose from.

We started with a Smoked Salmon with mixed greens, Parma Ham with Rock Melon, and a Mixed Green with shaved Parmesan.

From the pasta main courses menu, we took the Spaghetti Aglio Olio tossed with garlic, chilli and olive oil; Linguine with prawns and cherry tomatoes; and a tomato-based seafood pasta. For desserts, there are only Dolce del giorno and Gelato/Sorbet. We took the dessert of the day which was a simple slice of cake.

While there’s nothing to fault about the Italian food at Da Paolo La Terrazza, I don’t think that lunch is fantastic. I like choices. I like to be able to choose from a list of desserts, and in this sense, Da Paolo’s set lunch doesn’t quite appeal to me.

Does this mean that Da Paolo is not worth a try? Not at all. Like I said, the Italian restaurant at Chip Bee Gardens has a nice vibe, and they serve one of the best Tiramisu in Singapore. I will certainly visit Da Paolo again for the ala carte menu, but I just don’t see myself returning just for the set lunch. Am I expecting too much from a $24++ 3 course set lunch? No, I don’t think so. There are plenty of good lunch deals elsewhere.

Like the main restaurant at Dempsey road, the French bistro offers two different set lunches: 3 course set lunch at $30++.

We had two normal 3 course set lunches and for starters, we had the Salmon Tartar, which was light and refreshing – the perfect appetiser to start our lunch. When it comes to escargot, there are typically only two reactions: a) I love it or b) eew snails are so disgusting! My lunch partner belonged to the latter camp, and refused to touch the escargot so I had everything to myself.

It took us a while to choose the main course. You could have the excellent Onglet Beef with French Mustard Jus and mashed potatoes, or the Penne pasta with roasted vegetables, or the catch of the day. It is impossible to not be tempted by the Chicken Leg Confit and the Braised Lamb Shoulder, and it’s hard to say no to my favourite Mushroom Risotto.

We eventually settled on the Mushroom Risotto and the Catch of the day which was an Escolar. The fish was very fresh and well-cooked, it fell apart nicely when we teased it with a fork. The portion was quite small for guys, but it is probably just nice if you don’t want to fall asleep in the office after lunch.

As much as I love risotto, I’d usually avoid this dish when it comes to choosing a main course for set lunches. It seems a little silly to choose risotto when there are meat and seafood on the menu. But I was glad that I ordered Chez Petit Salut’s Mixed Mushroom Risotto with light cream emulsion and Parmesan Cheese. It was rich, and creamy: thick flavourful rice done al dente, with the earthiness of the fresh mushrooms giving it an additional flavour.

I think this is easily one of the best risotto that I had before.

Amongst the six desserts available on Chez Petit Salut’s set lunch menu, we didn’t want the Fresh Fruit Salad, Homemade Strawberry Shortcake, and Financer with chantilly cream, so it left us to choose two desserts between the classic Creme Brulee, Choux Buns and Homemade Cheesecake.

We agreed that the Gateau au Fromage Blanc was too good to miss, and since I had Au Petit Salut’s creme brulee before, we went for the Choux Buns with vanilla ice cream.

Filled with vanilla ice cream and glazed with a sweet and thick coating of chocolate sauce, the choux buns were gone before you could pronounce profiteroles. While they were not fantastic, we wanted to end the meal on a sugar high, and the Choux Buns did just that.

The Homemade Cheesecake was accompanied by a mixture of fruits, a delightful end to a great lunch at Chez Petit Salut.

After coming up with Guides to Holland Village, Chip Bee Garden, and Dempsey Road restaurants, I have been thinking: where’s next? I want to blog about a dining area which is not known to most, and hopefully it will encourage you to check it out.

The stretch of Greenwood Avenue restaurants immediately came to mind: a) there’s a good mix of Brazilian, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, and Western restaurant, b) the restaurants at Greenwood Avenue are nice for a quiet dinner away from the city and c) not many people have been there before.

Here’s a complete guide to the Greenwood Avenue Restaurants:

Bronte
8 Greenwood Ave Singapore
Tel: +65 6219 9151

Cafe Iguana //Now closed

Sometimes, it can get a little boring when we are always having French, Italian or Japanese food. One of my new year resolutions is to be more adventurous and try out some exotic cuisine that I have never tried before – Mexican food at Cafe Iguana is definitely next on the agenda!

12 Greenwood Avenue Singapore
Tel: +65 6462 1533

Chat Masala Too!

The Singapore Food & Beverage industry is a very difficult place to survive in – restaurants open and close all the time. When I walked past Chat Masala Too restaurant after my dinner at Greenwood fish market, the Indian restaurant was completely empty for the night. If you are a fan of the Indian food there, I think you need to get some friends down to support them before it’s too late.

18 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6762 2133

Donna Carmela/Caipirinha

From what I understand, Donna Carmela and Caipirinha belong under the same owner, with the former being an Italian restaurant and the latter serving Brazilian churrascaria.

2 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6463 4206

Greenwood Fish Market

When I went to Greenwood Fish Market three years ago, I had the best fish and chips in my life! Is the fish and chips still as good? Wait for my next post, I will be blogging about the supposedly “best fish and chips in Singapore” (from my memory).

34 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6467 4950

La Braceria Pizza and Grill

Positioned directly at the back of Greenwood is Greendale Avenue, there’s La Braceria Pizza and grill. I actually missed it when I was there, and only came to know about it after coming across the restaurant online.

5 Greendale Avenue Singapore
Tel: +65 6465 5918

Lana Cake Shop

Can you believe it? I HAVE NOT TRIED LANA CHOCOLATE CAKE BEFORE! Pfft!

I can foresee that this will probably be one of my biggest regret in life. Okay, I shall make an order for the legendary chocolate cake from Lana Cake Shop soon!

Get me a slice of the lana chocolate cake, and I will love you forever!

36 Greenwood Avenue Singapore
Tel: +65 6466 8940

Peperoni Pizzeria

Having heard good things about Peperoni Pizzeria, this is definitely the next restaurant at Greenwood Avenue that I want to try.

6 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6465 6556

Punggol Choon Seng Seafood Restaurant

The Chinese seafood restaurant seems a little out of place in Greenwood Avenue, but hey, if you are craving for some Chinese seafood, here’s the place for you.

14 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6465 4621

Raku Japanese Restaurant & Bar

I’m not too sure if you will go all the way to Greenwood Avenue for Raku Japanese restaurant since they have another branch in Holland Village. With that being the only deciding factor, I’d probably go for the Japanese ala carte buffet at Shin Yuu Japanese restaurant instead.

10 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6219 9447

Shin Yuu Japanese Restaurant
16 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6763 4939

The Wagon Wheel
22 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6469 3688

* * *

Now, who says that there’s no good food in the West of Singapore? Holland Village, Chip Bee Garden, and Greenwood Avenue are all located in the West. There are actually plenty of nice restaurants and cafes in the west if you know where to find them.

Tell me, which is your favorite restaurant at Greenwood Avenue, and which one are you going to try next?

I’m sure many of you are familiar with the Holland Village restaurants, but do you know that there are a stretch of restaurants opposite Holland Village?

Chip Bee Garden on Jalan Merah Saga is located directly opposite of Holland Village. Hidden from the public eyes, it is a quaint and charming place that houses different restaurants, gourmet food stores, and baking supply shops.

Here’s a complete guide to the Chip Bee Garden Restaurants:

Bistro Petit Salut

The bistro is the sister restaurant of Au Petit Salut at Dempsey road. Prices are relatively more affordable compared to the restaurant, with the 3-course set lunch at just $25++.

Da Paolo Dolci

If Greenwood Avenue is home to the Les Amis group of restaurants, then Chip Bee Garden is the equivalent for the Da Paolo group. There are four different Da Paolo dining concepts here: Da Paolo Dolci is a bakery to showcase fine Italian sweets – many people told me that they serve the best tiramisu in Singapore.

43 Jalan Merah Saga #01-68
Chip Bee Gardens Singapore
Tel: +65 6479 0336

Da Paolo Gastronomia

With four centrally located Gastronomia outlets in Paragon, Great World City, Bukit Timah and Holland Village, I’m sure many of you would have seen Da Paolo Gastronomia before. It’s a deli that carries gourmet products, freshly-made pasta, bread, pizza and also a good selection of desserts for take-aways.

43 Jalan Merah Saga #01-74
Chip Bee Gardens Singapore

Da Paolo La Terrazza

There are three different restaurant concepts under the Da Paolo group; La Terrazza, Il Giardino, and Il Ristorante. They have an impressive lineup of homemade pasta with the prices in the $20 – $30 range.

44 Jalan Merah Saga #01-56
Chip Bee Gardens Singapore
Tel: +65 6476 1332

Da Paolo Pizza Bar

With twenty pizzas to choose from, the Da Paolo Pizza Bar focuses on perfecting their pizza, leaving the pasta, seafood and meat to La Terrazza. The different dining concepts cater to different cravings and occasions, with the restaurant being a good choice for a romantic dinner, and the pizza bar the ideal place for friends gathering.

Michelangelo’s Restaurant

I’m sure many of you will know about Citibank’s credit card 1-for-1 dining promotion and that was the main reason why I am using their card. I have always wanted to check out Michelangelo’s as they are one of the restaurants that has the 1-for-1 lunch promotion, and also because they have been one of the most popular Italian restaurants in Singapore. Just in case you missed my previous post, the upcoming Singapore Food Blogger dinner will be held at the Italian restaurant.

Original Sins

I always get a headache whenever my vegetarian friends asked me for recommendation of vegetarian food in Singapore. As much as I love vegetables, I can never imagine myself giving up kurobuta pork, wagyu beef, or lobster for potato, broccoli or tofu. Needless to say, I hardly eat vegetarian food when I’m out. Original Sins is a Mediterranean vegetarian restaurant in Singapore and a sister restaurant of the Michelangelo’s Group of Restaurants.

I know this is supposed to be a guide to Chip Bee Garden Restaurants Singapore and technically speaking, Pantry Magic isn’t a restaurant. Since this is a food blog, and Pantry magic is related to food, I decided to add it in the list anyway. For those of you who are not aware of the presence of Pantry Magic, they carry a variety of top-quality cookware to satisfy the needs of every cook.

Phoon Huat

If you are a baker, and you have not heard of Phoon Huat, I really do not know what to say. Phoon Huat is Singapore’s leading supplier of bakery, beverage and confectionery ingredients.

Shermay’s Cooking School

“Do you cook?” and “are you really a chef?” are some of the questions that I always get.

While I can find my way around the kitchen without getting hurt, and fried an egg or two, but at some point of my life, I came to the realization that I’m simply more talented in eating than cooking. Lets just leave the cooking and baking to the more talented folks. Drop by Shermay’s Cooking School at Chip Bee Garden or check out their website for information on the classes.
