The Bugis enclave has come a long way since its earlier, sleazier days. Now, things have smartened up for the place with the many slews of hipster cafes, shopping centres and even classy new hotel establishments such as Andaz Singapore.

While the area is evolving into a shopping paradise for both locals and tourists alike, one thing still remains unchanged—the food scene here is immense. Sussing out some of the best from the old to the new, from glitzy restaurants, cosy cafes and humble hole-in-the-walls, here is our list of 50 cafes and restaurants in Bugis.

Situated along Haji Lane, Moosh Softserve is the latest addition to the hipster street. Primarily serving soft serve (for takeaways only), this Muslim-owned soft serve shop currently has six flavours including classic flavours such as Strawberry and Blueberry.

Besides the classics, Moosh Softserve also offers unique dessert-inspired flavours such as Apple Crumble, S’mores, and the popular Ondeh Ondeh.

If you are looking for some refreshing sweet treats to cool off in the sweltering heat, Moosh Softserve is where you should head for.

The Ondeh Ondeh soft serve (Regular: S$4.50 / Large: S$6.90) features a gula melaka soft serve base, lined with pandan sauce and topped with desiccated coconut, coconut flakes and even more pandan sauce. Despite all the different elements added, the soft serve was extremely silky and creamy without being too sweet.

The Nutella Brownies Cheesecake Soft Serve (Regular: S$4.50 / Large: S$6.90) comes with a generous swirl of Nutella soft serve, topped with rich chocolate sauce and chocolate malt, and sprinkled with brownie crumbs. This was simply chocolate heaven in a cup, what more could we ask for?

Moosh Softserve offers pretty interesting and unique flavours that are neither overly dense nor overwhelmingly sweet. Conveniently located at Haji Lane, this is definitely a place to check out during afternoon shopping trips for a quick sweet fix.

Sitting along the old-fashioned shophouses that line North Bridge Road is The Dim Sum Place. You won’t be able to miss it because it has this eye-catching bright orange awning.

This place doles out good Cantonese dim sum with a creative local twist that will allow you to sample a unique mix of flavours in a single meal setting.

The best part? It is halal-certified so our Muslim friends can enjoy the dim sum, too!

From the outside, this halal-certified eatery does not appear big enough to accommodate large crowds. But step in and you will realise how spacious the restaurant is.

We opted for a mixture of classic dim sum choices as well as some unique creations that are not commonly seen.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block; text-align:center;"

For starters, we attempted the Chicken Siew Mai (S$3.90/3 pcs) and Pan Fried Taro Cake (S$2.90/3pcs). The plating of the dishes was done really nicely. The Chicken Siew Mai was tasty and the sweet chilli dip that went along added a nice punch to the medley of flavours.

The Pan Fried Taro Cake arrived a tad dry but the chilli sauce made it better.

The next two dishes got us super excited—namely the Vermicelli Roll With Beef Rendang (S$8.90) and the Vermicelli Roll With Shrimp & Spring Onion (S$7.90). These essentially act as a modern representation of the typical Chee Cheong Fun.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block; text-align:center;"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805"
data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins>

The Beef Rendang was tender and the spices really shone through the dish. The Shrimp option was superb and the special light sauce paired well with the crystal-like skin of the rolls.

We also tried the Congee with Shredded Chicken (S$6.90). Albeit its simple presentation, the stock of the porridge was the main star. Scoop up the warm congee and top it off with the shredded chicken. You will find this dish highly comforting.

The Molten Salted Egg Pandan Buns (S$4.90) and TDSP Cheese Tarts (S4.90/2pcs) were just what we needed to end the meal on a sweet note. The pandan buns did not have molten salted egg oozing out like how we’d like it, though.

Christmas is a wonderful time to gather with family and friends because this is the season to be jolly! Needless to say, restaurants and hotels are pulling out all stops when it comes to their festive buffets to create a memorable Christmas for everyone.

Royale—an all-day dining restaurant located at Mercure Singapore Bugis—has made it into our list as one of the best options for Christmas this year. The team behind the restaurant has prepared a sensational holiday buffet and you would be surprised by its affordable price tag.

For the entire month of December, delight yourself in ‘A Globetrotting Christmas’ buffet feast from S$48++ per adult/ S$24++ per child. The buffet features over 40 holiday recipes intertwined with Asian flavours such as Oven Baked Nonya Turkey served with Homemade Chili Sauce and Baked Honey Cinnamon Gammon Ham with Citrus Sauce.

From the succulent meat offered at ‘live’ carving stations to Western and Asian specialities and artisanal desserts, this is one festive buffet you definitely need to try! Our readers can quote ‘ladyironchef’ to enjoy 20% off total bills for Royale’s festive buffets from 01 to 31 December 2017 (excluding Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve),

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Adding a tropical touch to a European delicacy for a twist, the German Pork Knuckle with Pineapple Sauce is another highlight of this buffet. Also known as Bavarian Schweinehaxen in German, the pork knuckle was roasted till it had a layer of crispy skin enveloping fork-tender pork.

The pork knuckle is good on its own but you can spice things up a little and add a few drops of pineapple sauce for an elevated taste.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

If you are wondering where the turkey got its rich flavour from, that’s because there are seven types of Peranakan spices used to marinate the meat. And you have to pair the fragrant turkey meat with Royale’s homemade chilli sauce—a spicy concoction that reshapes our perspective of how wonderful a turkey can be.

There is a stellar fish option too if you do not want an all-meat meal. The Baked Tandoori Salmon with Mint Chutney features a smooth salmon fillet that is marinated overnight with traditional Indian spices and yoghurt before it is roasted in the oven to achieve a smouldering taste.

WESTERN AND ASIAN HOT SPECIALTIES

Beyond that, the festive buffet also offers some pretty good Western and Asian specialties—the Australian Cherry and Port Glazed Rack of Lamb is a hearty meat dish that is often eaten in Winter; the Waffles Chicken is simple but oh-so-good; then there are the Garlic and Rosemary Prawns that won us over with lightly flavoured sweet, juicy prawns; and Accordion Potatoes which is covered in copious amounts of sour cream and bacon bits.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

CRAYFISH LAKSA ‘LIVE’ STATION

Head over to the Crayfish Laksa ‘live’ station for something that is good all year round; Christmas or not. The chef prepares every order a la minute so you only get the freshest, warmest bowl of noodles. The laksa broth we had was creamy, full-flavoured and was well complemented with sweet crayfish.

SEAFOOD ON ICE

No buffet spread is truly complete without fresh seafood on ice and fans of shellfish will need to know that this is where you can get free-flow oysters, mussels, prawns, crayfish and clams!

Yes, they are all included in the festive buffet line-up and this reality sure made us do a double take on the price.

FESTIVE ARTISANAL DESSERTS

Remember to save some room for Royale’s festive artisanal desserts, handcrafted by Royale’s own Pastry Chef Man. In fact, you can even watch the pastry chef in action at the ‘live’ pastry kitchen as she crafts out all the cakes and muffins daily.

Our picks include Royale’s Hazelnut Log Cake, Pandan Crème Brûlée, Cempedak Meringue Tart and Durian Puree with Vanilla Mousse.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Whether you show up as a party of two or intend to have a mass family reunion, there is a tier for everyone. A three-tier option (S$59.90) with clams, mussels, prawns, oysters and scallops all in the crustacean mix is ideal for a pair.

If you upgrade to a five-tier tower (S$118.90), you get tiger prawns in addition to the three-tier seafood selection. The portion increases proportionally as well. Go jumbo with the seven-tier tower (S$198.90) and enjoy a serving of squid along with all the other aforementioned seafood.

Once you have massacred the tower and reached the soup base, you can also choose from an array of ingredients to add to your flavour-packed soup. The plates are colour-coded starting from S$2 for the yellow plate all the way to S$8 for the deluxe black plate.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The Chocolate Fudge Cake (S$9++) is flavoured with a touch of salt, giving the dessert a nice savoury touch to combat the overall sweetness.

And this is a little tip—enjoy all your PizzaExpress dishes with a glass of the signature Lemonade (S$6), featuring freshly squeezed lemon and lime, soda, and mint. Italian food can be pretty rich and heavy so this drink definitely helps in balancing the flavours and keeping you refreshed throughout your meal!

It is also good to note that if you plan on driving, park at Park View Suites instead of Duo Galleria to minimise on the walking distance!

Filled with an amalgam of trendy cafes and under-the-radar clothing boutiques, Bugis is a favourite of locals and tourists alike for a day of pure fun and food in the sun.

However, Bugis is more than just a food and shopping heaven. There are plenty of historical and religious sites to explore and a multitude of interesting cultural activities that you can get up to. Why fill up your day with mindless shopping when you could immerse and educate yourself about Singapore’s rich heritage instead?

Here are 13 Interesting Things You Must See & Do In Bugis, one of the most exciting hipster areas in Singapore. It is time to make plans with your partner or friends to visit Bugis this weekend and make sure that you bring along your camera too!

Along your way to Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, there are many fortune telling booths lining both sides of Waterloo Street. However, fortune telling is not as simple as it seems and you would find many different types of fortune telling experts, such as feng shui masters to Tarot readers to ‘astro-palmists’ here.

Whether you are curious about what your future has to offer or if you want to gain a little insight into the future of your relationship, why not approach one of the experienced fortune tellers along Waterloo Street for a reading?

A scoop (or two) of rich and creamy ice cream is always on the top of our minds whenever we are outdoors and suffering from Singapore’s sweltering heat. At S$1.20 a scoop, how could we say no?

For the uninitiated, the S$1.20 ice cream is one of the most iconic street eats of Singapore’s food scene and it is a must-have if you are traversing the streets of Bugis. With a plethora of different flavours such as chocolate, ripple, blueberry and durian, up for choice, choose to enjoy your sweet dessert in a piece of rainbow bread, within a wafer biscuit or in a cup.

Located at 4 Haji Lane, Panko is a new Japanese Kushikatsu restaurant by the Unlisted Collection who is behind other popular dining establishments including Burnt Ends, Cheek by Jowl, Salted & Hung and The Market Grill.

Panko officially opened to the public on 07 July 2017 and it bills itself as “Singapore’s sleekest Japanese kushikatsu restaurant”. Which in all honestly, is not difficult as few restaurants in Singapore serve kushikatsu.

Kushikatsu, for the uninitiated, is famous in Osaka and is known to be one of the identities of that city’s food scene. Also known as kushiage, kushikatsu is essentially deep-fried meat/vegetable skewers.

The prices of Panko’s kushikatsu range from S$2 to S$8 per stick. Enjoy the kushikatsu with ponzu dip, Japanese salt or homemade sauce. If you miss having kushikatsu in Osaka, Panko at Haji Lane is your alternative.

Located at Bussorah Street, Lickety Ice Cream & Waffles—a new halal-owned dessert cafe by the team behind Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro and Konditori Artisan Bakery—offers a pleasant array of ice cream and egglet waffles that will thrill the foodie in you.

Before we stepped into Lickety Ice Cream & Waffles, we were greeted by the ever so aesthetically pleasing Tiffany Blue that layered the exterior of this ice cream paradise. Decorated with pastel-coloured furniture and adorable ornaments, every corner of this cafe made for an Instagram-worthy shot.

Do note that seating at Lickety Ice Cream & Waffles is limited as there are only two tables with seats inside and outside the cafe.

You can enjoy their egglet waffles in two ways—Buttermilk and Red Velvet. Thereafter, choose from a selection of ice cream flavours such as Lingonberry Swirl and Hazelnut Rocher to enjoy with your waffle. Toppings you can pick from include crushed Oreo cookies and marshmallows.

1 scoop of ice cream with 1 topping and a waffle would cost you S$8.90 and 2 scoops, 2 toppings and a waffle would amount to S$11.90. All waffles come in a paper cup which makes it a convenient treat to have during your exploration of Haji Lane or even just to eat at the cafe.

We ordered the Red Velvet Waffle with a scoop of Hazelnut Rocher ice cream and Pocky sticks (S$8.90).

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Aside from being an extremely pretty dessert, it was a pity that the waffle was not as crispy or “airy” as most egglet waffles usually are. Instead, it had a spongy texture similar to a regular waffle. Another thing that would have enhanced this dessert is if the red velvet taste of the waffle was not as muted.

We also tried the Buttermilk Waffle with one scoop of Thai Milk Tea ice cream and mini marshmallows (S$8.90). Just like the Red Velvet Waffle, the Buttermilk Waffle had a spongy texture but it fared slightly better.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

For those of you who are familiar with the famous Oddies Foodies in Hong Kong, you might find that Lickety Ice Cream & Waffles has a rather similar concept. Lickety’s assembly of the dessert sure strikes a resemblance to the iconic Hong Kong dessert, except that Oddies Foodies’ version is a lot better.

But since nothing else in Singapore comes close, we’ll do with Lickety’s version whenever we have a hankering for some egglet waffle dessert.
