NAKHON KITCHEN

Admittedly one of the most well-known Thai eateries in Singapore, Nakhon Kitchen is a household name among the Singaporeans which serves affordable and decent Thai food.

The waiting time during dinner is usually at least 30 minutes. The food here tastes like Bangkok street food, and to further boost its authenticity of the eatery, most of the staff are Thai too.

PONGGOL NASI LEMAK

Ponggol Nasi Lemak needs no introduction. This legendary nasi lemak stall has fantastic Chinese-style Nasi Lemak and we love their super crispy chicken wings, luncheon meat, and fried egg.

There is a long snaking queue at the stall once they open for business during dinner. Pro tip: the queue starts forming after 5.30pm, you can avoid the crowd if you reach there by 5pm.

This traditional Hainanese curry rice stall near Kovan MRT Station is incredibly popular and the queue forms even before they start their operation at 5pm. To be honest, we’ve tried their curry png several times and we don’t get the hype over it even though we are huge fans of Hainanese curry rice.

Mention Kovan and most people will think of the famous Punggol Nasi Lemak and the popular food stalls at Kovan 209 Market & Food Centre. But residents in the Kovan and Lorong Ah Soo neighbourhoods will tell you that the area is more than that. It is also home to many eateries and cafes that are worth exploring.

Here is our guide to the cafes in Kovan and Lorong Ah Soo to visit for brunch, coffee, ice cream and desserts.

You might have heard of their legendary Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake, Waffles and Homemade Brownies, but Ice Edge Cafe is more than that. It offers a menu of wallet-friendly dishes (most mains are priced under S$20).

With hipster cafés popping up all over our sunny island, we are simply spoilt for choice. Do you know that the North-East is home to a plethora of cafés — from crowd-favourite gelato and waffle parlours to floral-themed establishments reminiscent of a garden from a fairytale?

We have combed through all the noshery there is to find in the North-East, and narrowed down the best spots for you; what better than a chill hideaway nook with a mean cup of joe and Instagram-worthy food?

Forgo your neighbourhood bak chor mee stall — here are 15 cafes in North-East Singapore from Serangoon to Punggol you have to visit!

LICKERS

Nestled in neighbourhood estate Lorong Ah Soo is hip ice cream parlour Lickers. Notable for their affordable ice cream and waffles, this café operates until after midnight, so you can satisfy your sweet late-night cravings at 2am.

There’s also a multitude of flavours to choose from, including classics such as Dark Chocolate and Earl Grey and interesting options such as Yakult Oreo, Lychee Rose or Cookie Monster! They change the selection on some days too. You can choose between standard cup, cone or waffles, but we would recommend getting the gelato with their crispy buttermilk waffles — the generous dollop of ice cream tastes heavenly together with the fluffy base.

Expect pop music blasting in the background upon stepping into Oblong, skateboards hanging on the walls and a dim-lit interior; the low lights add ambience and cosiness to the tiny parlour.

Oblong serves up fluffy stacked waffles, with a wide selection of handcrafted gelato. They also occasionally change up their flavours and waffle base.
