KFC Singapore is known for its wild imagination and innovative creations. Besides serving Finger Lickin’ Good chicken, it has dedicated itself time and again to conjure up groundbreaking dishes that are downright delicious.

You’ve seen the Chizza and the Zinger Double Down. This time, KFC Singapore is back with yet another crazy culinary hybrid. Sick and tired of shattering messy tacos, they’ve embarked on a quest to bring to you a — wait for it — shell-less rendition of the Mexican dish.

Meet the Kentaco. KFC’s latest creation featuring a fried chicken taco shell that does not disappoint.

A cross between a taco and fried chicken, the Kentaco has swapped out the classic outer layer of corn tortilla for — you guessed it — fried chicken. We know, this could either be the worst mistake in the history of fried chicken experiments, or a sheer culinary breakthrough.

The Kentaco (S$5.90) features a crispy chicken fillet that’s hand-breaded and fried to form a classic taco ‘U’ shape. Stuffed with fresh iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes, decadent cheese sauce and shredded cheese, it’s the ultimate combo for cheese junkies.

Now, before the taco purists can scream “abomination”, how about a little taste test?

The breaded chicken was crispy on the outside and really tender on the inside, with the cheese serving as the perfect flavour booster. The lettuce and tomatoes added a refreshing crunch to the fried indulgence.

The best way to devour this is to just take one large bite of the whole monstrosity, getting an explosion of flavours from the chicken, cheese and veggies all at once.

Salivating already? Fret not, the Kentaco is available in-stores now!

For hungrier customers, the Kentaco Meal (S$7.95) is available, which comes with an addition of Medium Fries and 1 Regular Pepsi Black. Or, you can up the stakes with their Kentaco Box (S$9.95), served with 1 Piece Chicken, 1 Regular Whipped Potato, 1 Regular Fries and 1 Regular Pepsi Black.

KFC Kentaco will available at all KFC restaurants except KFC Kidzania and Singapore Zoo.

Nested along the rows of bars at Seah Street is Papi’s Tacos. Opened by the crew behind the famous Employees Only, this back-alley taqueria blends fun with food to serve up only the best and most authentic Mexican delights.

From excellently done burritos to tacos, mezcal to a range of tequila-forward cocktails, this humble joint is not only great for a quick taco fix, it is also perfect for winding down after a long workday.

Adorning the shirts with “Papi knows best” on them, the chefs display what real Mexican food is like while they scoop black beans over their tomato rice, toss giant bowls of salsa and fold burritos like it’s nobody’s business—right from behind the open counter.

We ordered Papi’s Classic Margarita (S$15), Steak Quesadilla (S$15), Burrito de Carnitas (S$15) and a set of Tacos de Pescado (S$13).

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

Our last dish was the quesadilla. Within the tortillas were good honest strips of steak cooked till slightly pink in the middle and covered in cheese, served with homemade salsa and sour cream.

We had a hard time deciding if we liked the taco of the quesadilla more. The meat wasmoist and tender while the cheese provided that savoury umami taste that left us feeling guilty and sinful but still wanting more.

As the eatery is a small dining space with only 16 seats, do try to make your way down before peak hours to snag a good seat—be it over the counter to watch the chefs at work, or to dine alfresco and enjoy a good smoke.

Located along Tanjong Katong Road, Burp Kitchen is a gastro bar that prides itself on serving honest and hearty plates of food. Don’t let the sweeping volumes of rare whisky bottles behind the wooden bar distract you from their excellent grub because when it comes to their food, these folks are not ones to fool around.

Their fusion-forward menu comprises anything from Mexican-style tacos, tender pieces of perfectly marinated buffalo-style chicken wings to some pretty interesting burger creations inspired by the flavours of Southeast Asia. And that’s not all, every item on their menu is nett priced!

CHICKEN WINGS

Up for something that guarantees a fiery kick? Try their Spicy Buffalo Wings (S$12) that is a delicate balance of savoury and spicy all in one.

Deep-fried and tossed in their house-perfected buffalo-style chilli sauce, this dish boasts a heady, spice-laden aroma with subtle smoky elements to it. Upon your first bite, you get an explosion of flavour coupled with a nice crunch, but following that comes an intense heat that will have you leaning towards an ice-cold beverage in mere seconds.

Another good alternative to consider—should you wish to spare your tongue—is the Burp Kitchen Wings (S$9). Sweet, savoury and mildly citrusy, these tasty bad boys proved to be incredibly easy to knock back. The hard part is trying to stop.

PRAWN PASTE POPCORN CHICKEN

The Prawn Paste Popcorn Chicken (S$9) is a great snack to have to accompany an ice-cold beer. Tender chicken thighs are diced into bite-sized pieces before being marinated in prawn paste and subsequently deep-fried.

These nuggets of joy are extremely crunchy and flavourful and the citrusy mayo that is served alongside it just makes for the perfect pairing.

LET’S ‘TACO BOUT’ TACOS

You’d be hard-pressed finding a single dining establishment in Singapore serving read-deal, tasty tacos that aren’t Mexican by nature, but here at Burp Kitchen, we were thoroughly impressed.

An interesting and pretty uncommon taco offering is the Beef Bulgogi (S$12) that features a generous portion of slivered marinated beef and diced kimchi over top. Sweet, subtly spicy and brimming with umami, this innovative fusion dish is one worth trying.

If you would rather opt for seafood, then their Grilled Shrimp (S$12) tacos make for a decent alternative. The prawns are tender with a delicious crunch and are well marinated in a spice mix with cumin being a predominant factor.

Cooked low and slow, the Pork Carnitas (S$12) is a treat of tender pulled pork and fantastic smoky barbecue flavour. Upon the first bite, the first thing that hits you is the savoury-sweet aroma of American-style barbecue sauce, followed by the beautiful texture of tender pulled pork.

A tad rich, the salsa fresca does well to cut through all the intense pork flavours.

A burger that hits all the right flavour notes is the Beefy Shrooms (S$16). This colossal beef burger comes with a heaping mound of sautéed mushrooms, along with melted cheese, caramelized onions, arugula and house-made truffle mayo.

The beef patty was cooked beautifully, taking on a nicely charred exterior and a pinkish middle—just the way we like it.

If you’re looking to go easy on the calories, then perhaps the Portobello (S$14) should do the trick. Replacing the regular meat-based patty with a grilled portobello and served together with a fried egg and caramelised onions, you’d be just as content with this as you would any regular burger.

New to Burp Kitchen’s menu is the coveted Prawn Paste Chicken Burger (S$15) that features a gorgeous hunk of a fried chicken thigh, Japanese cucumber and sweet Thai chilli mayo—all nicely compact between a brioche bun.

Introduced as part of a special item in light of the coming national holiday, this Rolls Royce of a burger brings to the table all sorts of flavourful delights.

Marinated with a fragrant shrimp paste, the chicken thigh is lightly dredged in flour before being deep-fried to give it that crunchy yet not overly doughy outer layer. Every bite was a burst of complex flavours from the salty, fragrant shrimp paste to the succulent, savoury qualities of the juicy chicken meat.

PORK MARINARA

It’s pretty difficult to mess up pasta, but what the cooks do here with their Pork Marinara (S$14)—which we absolutely admire—is the fact that their tomato sauce is made totally from scratch.

Using only ripe tomatoes on the vine, they cook it with an assortment of aromatics and ground pork mince and reduce the mixture down into a concentrated, flavourful sauce.

The process takes hours, but it is well worth the effort and it really does show in the final product. Paired with properly cooked linguine pasta and a pork sausage on the side, this hearty pasta dish is great for satisfying any pasta-related cravings.
