#3 Experience True Serenity At The MacRitchie Tree-Top Walk

Be one with nature and experience true serenity away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

This trail, which begins at Venus Drive, takes you to the TreeTop Walk, a 250 metre-long freestanding suspension bridge between the two highest points in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. People with a fear of heights need not be afraid because the bridge is extremely safe and secure.

This is probably the fastest, easiest way to get a bird’s eye view of Singapore’s forest and wildlife. We suggest going there bright and early in the morning, so you will not have to deal with the midday heat. Just keep a look out for cheeky monkeys!

#3 FLY KITES AT MARINA BARRAGE

Yes, it is cliche but we love it. Just being worry-free and flying a kite, with a view of Marina Bay, sounds like the perfect day for us. Unadulterated, without a care about the world. Why not have a picnic while you are at it too?

#4 GO FOR AN EXHIBITION AT ARTSCIENCE MUSEUM

Exhibitions are usually free of charge here, with an exception of a few. And Artscience Museum always has the best exhibitions.

First, it was the opening of Coney Island Park and next, it was the launch of Eco-link@BKE Bridge. Singapore’s efforts in promoting greenery and conserving wildlife have increased steadily over the past few years and the Lion City is now home to an abundance of natural landscapes! Singapore’s largest freshwater marshland, Kranji Marshes, is the latest addition.

Located along Kranji Reservoir, the 56.8-hectare marshland is habitat to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Conservation actually commenced in 2011 to protect the region’s rich biodiversity and the environmental project has been a success.

Kranji Marshes officially opened its doors to public on Monday, 01 Feb 2016 and offers visitors a rare glimpse of Singapore’s countryside.

If you are planning to make a trip to Kranji Marshes, here are several things that you can expect. We have also included information such as how to get there via public transport.

WHAT IS KRANJI MARSHES

Kranji Marshes is an area of low-lying wetland that has been carefully restored by NParks and URA to protect the species residing in this unique environment.

A variety of factors were taken into consideration and each enhancement effort will essentially facilitate the marsh birds and other wetland-dependent creatures to thrive naturally. Only 8 ha are granted public access.

OPENING HOURS AND TIME TAKEN

The park is open from 7am to 7pm daily for practical safety reasons; there are no lamp posts to light the way.

While the time taken to complete a stroll at Kranji Marshes ultimately depends on individuals, it would be a good gauge to say it will take only half an hour to walk from the main entrance’s starting point to the end point at the Raptor Tower.

RULES TO ABIDE

Do bear in mind the guidelines so as to minimise disturbance to this natural habitat. Cycling, driving, skateboarding, swimming, fishing, smoking and littering are all strictly prohibited.

Unfortunately, your pets can’t join you too, and releasing of any animals and feeding wildlife is strictly prohibited. Make it a point to only walk on designated trails and keep the noise levels low.

HOW TO GET THERE

There is a public car park located right outside Kranji Marshland’s main entrance.

Otherwise, you can board the Kranji Express Shuttle Bus from Kranji MRT (adult – $3 per pax, child – S$1 per pax, senior citizen – S$1 per pax) which will have you alighting directly at Kranji Marshes.

VANTAGE POINTS – BEST SPOTS IN KRANJI MARSHES

While the top of Raptor Tower offers a beautiful bird’s eye view of Kranji Marshes, it is the scenic lookout from Swamphen Hide – located right behind Raptor Tower – that had us mesmerised.

The reflective waters nestled by lush meadows offer an incredibly tranquil escapade and we could hardly believe that we were actually still in Singapore!

Every avid traveller and architectural fan would have heard about New York’s exceptionally stunning architectural project, The High Line. The greenway was constructed from an abandoned railway and is a popular attraction amongst New Yorkers and tourists alike. Its roaring success has inspired many global cities such as Sydney and Seoul to follow suit.

Of course, no two construction ventures will ever be identical and New York City’s High Line can ultimately only serve as an inspiration.

Singapore is set to come up with its very own version of New York City’s The High Line on the Rail Corridor – the former rail line will be transformed into a park that will stretch across 24 kilometres, making it 10 times longer than The High Line.

The 24-km long Rail Corridor will actually cut through the entire tiny but mighty Singapore, with 122 public access points throughout the massive space. The large-scale project aims to be more than just an elevated park, with an ambitious goal of seamlessly integrating the nation’s communities like never before.

The complex task is led by Japanese architecture firm Nikken Sekkei, whom would be working with reputable companies Arup Singapore and Tierra Design.

With eight special activity nodes designated in the grand plan, Rail Corridor would be more than just an “attraction”.

It intends to integrate itself into the daily lives of locals, where one could immerse in leisure, dining and even sporting activities etc in relaxed environments. Urban farms, fishing ponds and cycling paths are only the tip of the iceberg. How exciting!

Rail Corridor is certainly not all about building new infrastructure. Instead, the park wishes to restore life back into outdated landmarks and reintroduce them to the local community. Singapore’s age-old sites such as the heritage building Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and Bukit Timah’s iconic steel truss bridge would too be included in this gigantic communal area.

Green is one of the key components of Rail Corridor and one can anticipate an abundance of lush greenery.

It has been said that a forest walk and an observation tower would be built at the former Bukit Timah Fire Station, where it will boast 360-degree views of the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. That is not all. A firefly garden and other nature walkways await!

There are bound to be pros and cons in every upcoming development and many citizens have expressed their concerns on whether the ‘resurrection’ of historical monuments would actually result in the loss of its rustic charm. While the debate is still ongoing, we cannot deny that this huge movement will mark yet another significant milestone in Singapore’s advancement.

The A-team has been painstakingly collecting feedbacks from the public and details of the finalised project would be further moulded to meet the general audience’s expectations.

The official launch date of Rail Corridor is unconfirmed, but we look forward to embrace the integrated green public space, which would hopefully reap the same success as Manhattan’s.

More often than not, when you ask your friends what they think of when you mention “work out”, the answer would most probably be three letters: GYM. So much so that hitting the gym has become more of a lifestyle than just a form of exercise.

Working out in space limited Singapore doesn’t always necessarily mean pumping the iron or stomping the treadmill. How does breaking out the sweat while being surrounded by nature and Instagram-worthy views sound like to you?

If you think the Southern Ridges and Sungei Buloh are all there is to nature in Singapore, think again! Here are 10 more uncharted nature trails in Singapore to feed either your need for green or, for the less interested, your Instagram fix in urban Singapore.

#1 CONEY ISLAND

Bask in softly filtered natural lighting and enjoy the breeze in an open air, natural environment. No, this is not a new cafe offering an al fresco dining experience. Welcome to Coney Island, Singapore’s newest nature park! Although it was only recently opened to public, Coney Island is already the must visit destination for Insta-hippies with its wild grassy look coupled with a soft textured backdrop provided by the Casuarina trees.

The island projects a sense of nostalgia, transporting you back to a time where roads were just dirt paths from clearing vegetation and where amenities were primitive. Look out for hanging nests that were intrinsically weaved by the Baya weaver birds along the main path or try spotting the lone Brahm cow that has called the island home.

Also, hidden among the mangroves is a villa built by the Haw Par brothers! However, to avoid being caught by the tides, we highly recommend that you sign up for the free guided tour provided by NParks, should you wish to visit and snap an Insta-worthy picture!

Start your journey from Punggol Point (Do stock up on water from the 7-11 convenience store and relieve yourself at Punggol Settlement before you begin your trek) and follow the signs, or the crowd, towards Coney Island. There are 2 entrances to Coney Island, but everyone enters from the western entrance, which is the entrance nearest to Punggol Point.

Oh, and do watch out for sandflies, especially at the beaches! Remember to go prepared and properly covered!

#2 SENTOSA NATURE TRAILS

Psst! Have you heard about dragons living in Sentosa? Or that an ancient civilization once existed on the island? Unleash your inner Indiana Jones and set out in search for the elusive dragon and that glittery Mayan gold “buried” in the heart of Sentosa!

Mention Sentosa to anyone and the first replies are usually to do with getting a tan on one of her beaches or the adrenaline rush that comes with Universal Studios. It is, after all, The State of Fun and there are countless activities one can partake in for a memorable day in Sentosa.

But for the avid naturalist who scorns the highly urbanised nature of attractions on the island, gear yourself up for a day of sweat and insect bites and explore the trails in Sentosa.

Make your way up the escalators to Imbiah Lookout and head to Sentosa Nature Discovery (previously known as the Butterfly Park Sentosa Monorail station). Pick up some nature watching skills here before heading off into the trails.

The many hidden structures sprawled across the trails – relics of some of Sentosa’s former attractions – bring back memories for many who have visited Sentosa in the past and gives it a sense of nostalgia. Enjoy the rewarding breeze and view on the Siloso Skywalk at the end of the trail. It’ll be worth it!

#3 MACRITCHIE RESERVOIR TO BUKIT TIMAH HILL

Challenge yourself to a journey through Singapore’s rainforests in this one heck of a trail. The first in Singapore, Macritchie Reservoir is steeped in history and houses many “easter eggs” to be discovered!

Did you know that World War II hero Lim Bo Seng’s tomb is situated on a hill in the Reservoir Park? Or that there used to be a Japanese Shrine during the Japanese Occupation?

Start from the trails at the eastern end of the reservoir, and make your way around the reservoir as you watch the macaques frolicking about in the trees or marvel at tree-climbing monitor lizards! Take a short detour to the TreeTop Walk and soak in the sights and sounds above the canopy, before making your way onto Rifle Range Road, and turn right onto the Kampong Trail near the end of Rifle Range Road. This will bring you to the entrance of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

If you are still feeling energetic at this point, challenge yourself and get to the summit of Bukit Timah Hill!

PS: Do note that Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is currently undergoing restoration works and access to the summit is only possible via the Summit Trail. The trail is also opened only on weekends from 7am-6pm.

#4 DAIRY FARM NATURE PARK

Before Hay Dairies in Lim Chu Kang, there was a dairy farm owned by the Cold Storage group right in the middle of the island. The farm has since ceased operations, but its legacy lives on with a road and, subsequently, a park, so very aptly named Dairy Farm.

Located on the periphery of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Dairy Farm Nature Park is one of a number of nature parks which were recently created to act as green buffers for Bukit Timah and the Central Catchment nature reserves. Start off at the Wallace Education Centre, which was converted from an old cow shed and learn more about the history of the park.

Trek into Wallace Trail and look out for traces of an old kampong that once populate Dairy Farm Nature Park, or the durian trees that line the trail. After leaving the jungle, take a slow walk to the Singapore Quarry to enjoy the breeze as you cool down and while taking in the majestic views of the quarry.

Getting to Dairy Farm Nature Park has also just gotten a lot easier! With the opening of Phase 2 of the Downtown line, the new Hillview MRT station brings you right smack in the middle of Dairy Farm Nature Park’s hiking trail at Carpark A. Simply hop off the train and begin your adventure!

#5 BIDADARI PARK

Protected by the dead. That would most probably be the best and most appropriate description for Bidadari Park. Formerly a muslim cemetery, the sacredness of the place gave the lush greenery the protection it needed.

Bidadari, with its diversity of migratory birds and numerous species of resident birds such as Woodpeckers and Kingfishers, is a paradise for birdwatchers. It is wild, unkempt, and its tracks are carved out by nature enthusiasts who frequent the park. Walk around the forested area and listen out for the various bird calls. Alternatively, try talking to some of the birdwatchers and they may point you to a rarely seen bird perched high up on the trees.

Located right beside Woodleigh MRT, getting to Bidadari Park is easy. However, those looking to visit Bidadari would have to do it soon. The area is slated for redevelopment and one wonders how much longer this green patch can remain untouched.

#6 TAMPINES ECO GREEN

Hidden in a corner of Tampines right beside the Tampines Expressway is her residents’ little secret. With no HDBs, carparks, and definitely no minimarts, this nondescript piece of greenery may just seem like any other green patch in Singapore. However, a step into the park and you feel as though u have been transported into the outskirts of the city, surrounded by lush greenery and the songs of many chirping birds.

Although relatively new, the park’s development was not intrusive and retains a ‘wild’ look. Dead trees that are not along the paths have been retained and have become a sanctuary for native and migratory birds, especially the majestic raptors such as White Bellied Sea Eagle and Brahminy Kite.

Trekking around Tampines Eco Green is a great learning journey for everyone. Start with the Diversity Trail where it brings you along the wetlands and grasslands where you can watch the white breasted waterhen jostle for territory or be entertained by the dance of the dragonflies along the wetlands.

Also keep a lookout for the majestic raptors that love perching on the many dead trees in the park before making loop through the Forest Trail for a nice shaded walk back to the entrance!

#7 RAIL CORRIDOR

For the longest time, this 24 km stretch of land was the gateway to Singapore, welcoming visitors to the garden city with a mixture of lush greenery and modern architecture in the distance. Although most of the railway tracks have been removed and patched over, revisit some of the historical landmarks and sights that once greeted many of our visitors who travelled by rail.

Developments to the rail corridor were recently announced and while the masterplan is impressive and will cater to a wide audience, one should not pass up the opportunity to see and photograph it in all of its natural glory, before it loses its identity and its atmosphere.

To thoroughly soak in the atmosphere of the rail corridor and fully appreciate the historical significance of the rail corridor, enter via the entrance south of the Rail Mall start from one of the iconic cast iron Truss bridges along the corridor. Take a slow walk down memory lane and keep a look out for the former Bukit Timah Railway Station and a second Truss bridge along King Albert Park, before ending the 5km journey at Holland Road.

#8 BISHAN – ANG MO KIO PARK – LOWER PEIRCE RESERVOIR PARK

Have you heard of the celebrity family that resides in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park? No? Well, it’s none other than the family of 5 otters which have decided to make Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park their home!

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park (formerly Bishan Park) is a true marvel of the combination of landscape architecture and civil engineering brilliance. What was once a communal garden with a mishmash of themes and fishing ponds has since been transformed into a meandering river system that is not only biodiverse, it also serves as a stormwater management and water filtration facility.

After an easy stroll “hunting” for otters and herons, cross over and go deep into the forest for an adventure at Lower Pierce Reservoir Park and hop onto the various trails in the park. The shade from the forest canopy and the well-maintained boardwalk makes trekking the Lower Pierce Reservoir Trail a breeze.

Keep your eyes up on the tree trunks just under the canopy and you may spot a flying lemur chilling out or a flying dragon gliding from tree to tree. If you are lucky, you may even hear the rustling of the leaf litter that discloses the presence of the elusive Lesser Mousedeer!

Finish the trek at the Casuarina entrance of the trail, which brings you right onto Casuarina road. There is no better reward than a good tzechar meal and/or a prata feast!

#9 SPRINGLEAF NATURE PARK

Neighbourhood parks with exercise machines and beautifully landscaped gardens are all too common here in the Garden City, but how about a neighbourhood nature park?

While it is much smaller in comparison to the larger nature parks and reserves, Springleaf Nature Park is no ordinary man made park. Steeped in history, the area was once a village named Chan Chu Kang where pepper and gambier (used for tanning leather) were cultivated. This was also where many iconic plants such as the Singapore Kopsia were first collected and described from!

Get into the park early in the morning and be treated to a spectacular sight as the morning sun rises above the canopy, illuminating the park with a golden glow for photos that make fantastic screensavers!

This is also when the birds are most active. Be serenaded by the melodious calls of the numerous black naped orioles that reside around the park, or watch on as a kingfisher dives into the river for a catch!

#10 LABRADOR PARK

Remember those history lessons about how Singapore was once deemed an impregnable fortress? It was believed that attacks, if any, would come in from the south of the island, thus the placement of many artillery weapons along the southern coast of our tiny island.

At Labrador Park, discover the hidden past of Labrador where artefacts and structures of what used to be a British military installations are scattered along the Nature Path under the canopy cover of the coastal forest. Even If you are not a history buff, a stroll along the Nature Path would introduce to you some of the more commonly seen coastal forest trees in Singapore such as the Sea Almond, of which its leaves are popularly known in the aquarium trade as ketapang, and are used as a water conditioner.

After donating blood to the mosquitoes of Labrador, climb down the steep steps of the Coastal Path and onto the shoreline for a nice breezy stroll along the coast to dry yourself up before heading off.

#1 SINGAPORE BOTANICAL GARDENS

Whip up your favourite dishes and pack your picnic baskets, because a picnic in the Singapore Botanical Gardens is a treat for all your senses! Delicious food for your tastebuds, fragrance from the flowers, a wide spectrum of colours from your surroundings and beautiful music, all combined for an immersive experience.

A place rich in history and of monument significance in the history of Singapore, the Singapore Botanic Gardens has also won over the hearts of its visitors, many of whom have special memories of time spent wandering around the Gardens. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Singapore Botanic Gardens has a lot more to offer, from the various trails such as the Evolution Garden or the Rain Forest Trail, to outdoor recitals at Symphony Lake.

#2 TREETOP WALK

Rising above the forest canopy of MacRitchie Reservoir Park is a bridge like no other. Step onto the bridge and be awestruck by the 50 shades of green right right before your eyes (and blue in the distance)!

The TreeTop Walk is definitely a highlight for many visitors to MacRitchie, but getting to it can be challenging for the uninitiated. The shortest route possible would be to enter from the Venus Drive entrance of the park, but even so, it is a 3.5km trek to the TreeTop Walk and a similar distance back to the same entrance.

#3 HAW PAR VILLA

Step into the mythical world of Chinese folklore and learn more about stories such as Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms through the many sculptures and dioramas in Haw Par Villa.

Built by the elder brother of the Haw Par brothers (creators of Tiger Balm), Haw Par Villa, as it is known today, is a brother’s display of love to his Western-educated younger brother, and also as a reminder to stay true to his roots.

The history of Haw Par Villa goes way back to the 1930s, and the park has seen many incarnations – from a residential compound to a lookout for the Japanese soldiers during the war, and even a theme park in the 1980s and 1990s. Although the park has seen better days, many sculptures and dioramas of the Chinese mythological folklores have been retained, including the famous and somewhat gruesome depiction of the 10 Courts of Hell (visitor discretion advised).

#4 GREEN CORRIDOR

Go back in time into the eyes of travellers of yesteryears and experience how it was like travelling on the railroad en route to Malaysia. The Green Corridor is a proposed nature area that spans the length of the former KTM railway tracks from Kranji in the north, to Tanjong Pagar in the city centre.

Years of non-existent development along the railway tracks has encouraged the many different species of trees and plants to colonise the areas surrounding it, providing a lush buffer and a fitting introduction to the garden city.

Spanning over 26km, you can choose to access various parts of the corridor by either taking a walk down the iconic bridge near King Albert Park, visiting the old Bukit Timah railway station, or simply taking in the sights and sounds of the surrounding greenery at any point along the corridor.

#5 NATURE AND HISTORY-THEMED GUIDED WALKS

Always amazed by the critters and desolated relics that are photographed right here in Singapore but unsure of where and how to find them? Or wondered about the history and story behind some of Singapore’s most well-known landmarks and districts? Put on your walking shoes/trekking boots and get ready for an adventure!

Volunteers from various interest groups and organisations frequently plan free guided walks, and some of them are Toddycats’ Love MacRitchie Walks, a.t.Bukit Brown, Naked Hermit Crabs and NParks. Stemming from their love towards conservation and the environment, these volunteers would be more than happy to share their encounters and even let you in on interesting snippets of their personal experience!

#6 GEOCACHING

X marks the spot!

Fancy going on a treasure hunt where you bash through jungles, explore hidden corners and travel to unfamiliar territories for its hidden “treasures”?

Geocaching is a fantastic way to explore and discover new and interesting places around the world. Simply download the app, select the geocache you would like to find and GPS your way to “X”. Remember to be a responsible “geocacher” by filling in the log book and returning the geocache to the exact spot where you found it.

PS. An abandoned Shinto shrine can be found somewhere in Singapore where a geocache is hidden.

#7 FARM-HOPPING AT KRANJI COUNTRYSIDE

Hidden in the Northern corner of Singapore is a lifestyle that is now considered a rarity in Singapore. Disconnect from urban Singapore and take in the sight, sound, smell and taste of rural Singapore.

Watch as goats are milked at Hay Dairies, be entranced by the myriad of ornamental fishes at Qian Hu Fish Farm, or see how vegetables and fruits such as aloe vera and wheatgrass are grown at Kin Yan Agrotech.

There are numerous farms spread out across the Kranji countryside, and you can find a wide range of produce and goods at each farm. If time only permits for one farm visit, head on to Farmart Centre, where kids can learn about, and have the opportunity to interact with various pet and farm animals.

#8 MARINA BAY – HELIX BRIDGE, JUBILEE BRIDGE, ESPLANADE, AND MERLION

Reclaimed from the sea during the 1970s, Marina Bay has seen amazing developments over the past two decades with the marquee developments such as the Marina Bay Financial Centre, The Sail Condominium, Marina Bay Sands and the Esplanade–Theatres by the Bay. As one of the hottest place in Asia to see and be seen, it has built a reputation of glitz and glamour with its snazzy architecture and world renowned events.

However, Marina Bay is not just a playground for the rich and famous. There are many things which visitors can do around the Bay – yes, absolutely free!

The construction of the Helix Bridge and, more recently, the Jubilee Bridge has made travelling around the bay a seamless loop. One can hop into the Marina Bay City Gallery to learn about the conceptualisation and development of Marina Bay, chill out at the roof terrace of the Esplanade with its fantastic view of the Bay, catch free performances that frequently take place at the Esplanade’s outdoor theatre or take a quirky selfie with the Merlion. There is always something for everyone in the family at Marina Bay.

#9 WONDER FULL AT MARINA BAY SANDS

Find yourself a comfortable spot at the platform outside Marina Bay Sands, bring along some snacks and drinks, and be prepared to be enthralled by a lights and sound extravaganza.

Presented in a unique setting where water fountains are magically transformed into cinematic screens, Wonder Full tells the tale of the journey of life, from the beginning of life on earth to the journey of a child into adulthood. Laser projections, fire displays and beautifully choreographed water fountains, adds an additional dimension to the already stunning display.

PS. Avoid being too close to the front on windy days, unless you do not mind the water splashing on you!

#10 MARINA BARRAGE

We all get flashbacks from the past and often reminisce about the good old days of being young and innocent. Most of us would definitely have fond memories of Marina South where, as a child, we would watch the kites soar high up into the sky, or even attempt to (successfully or unsuccessfully) fly one on our own.

Although the Marina South area has since gave way to the futuristic Gardens by the Bay, with its SuperTrees and temperature controlled Conservatories, a new spot has now established itself as the go-to place for kite flying; well, even Drone flying!

The Marina Barrage was purpose-built to increase Singapore’s water supply and created the Marina Reservoir, which is not only the newest, but also the largest reservoir in Singapore.

It is also masterfully designed — the green roof of the building not only keeps the building cool, it is also a big, open-space picnic spot favoured by families and couples. Whether planned, or by sheer coincidence, Marina Barrage has successfully revived the Marina South of the 90s and a space for kite flying enthusiasts to call their own.

#11 GARDEN RHAPSODY AT GARDENS BY THE BAY

Grab a space underneath the SuperTrees and wait for the magic to unfold! Immerse yourselves in a spectacular display of lights and sounds that make everything around you come alive!

The Garden Rhapsody celebrates the harmonious co-existence of Man and the Garden. The stars of the show, the SuperTrees, are also an architecture marvel that complements and creates a balance to the architecturally impressive skyscrapers at Marina Bay. Not only are they a sight to behold, they are also equipped with green technology, harvesting solar energy to power the SuperTrees and collecting rainwater for irrigation.

Singapore’s urban population of 100% comes at a price, where many Singaporeans are not exposed to mother nature. Let’s face it, many are easily fascinated by greenery – even if it is just an empty patch of grassland.

But the world’s most expensive city is not all about skyscrapers – the government has been putting immense effort to promote green spaces and a recent bridge – the Eco-Link@BKE – has been constructed to promote biodiversity conservation.

Here are 5 Things You Need To Know Before Visiting Singapore’s New Eco-Link@BKE. Most importantly, do note that you are prohibited to access the ecological infrastructure by yourself. To access the bridge, you will have to pre-register online for a guided walk by National Parks.

#1 LOCATION OF ECO-LINK@BKE BRIDGE

Spanning across Bukit Timah Expressway, the Eco-Link@BKE is an eco bridge that reconnects Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Central Catchment Nature Reserve. The two nature reserves have previously been split to give way to the Bukit Timah Expressway.

The exact location of the bridge is between BKE’s Dairy Farm exit and the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) exit.

#2 YOU CANNOT VISIT IT BY YOURSELF

Caution: Entering the Eco-Link@BKE by yourselves is strictly prohibited. Offenders who fail to adhere to this regulation will be issued a warning and subsequent fines. Bear in mind that there are cameras positioned along the bridge, so getting off scot-free will not be an easy feat.

The only way to access it is via a guided walking tour.

#3 THE PURPOSE OF ITS CONSTRUCTION

As mentioned previously, the primary purpose of the Eco-Link@BKE is to restore the connections of the two nature reserves’ biodiversities in a sustainable manner. Wildlife from both forests are encouraged to cross the bridge and the ideal long-term results would be the expansion of their habitats and survival chances.

Many native flora and fauna are subjected to extinction and it is hoped that the Eco-Link@BKE bridge will reduce the likelihood.

#4 THERE ARE MONTHLY GUIDED TOURS

There are currently two guided walking tours held on the following days: 21 Nov 2015, 5 Dec 2015, 19 Dec 2015 and 9 Jan 2016. After which, there will only be a monthly walking tour starting from March next year.

The 90-minute tour is free of charge, but interested participants have to register in advance via National Parks to secure a slot.

#5 THE ESSENTIAL DOS AND DON’TS

Visitors can do their best to minimise human disturbances to Eco-Link@BKE by avoiding bright-coloured apparels, insect repellant and sunblock lotion. The scent of sunscreen will deter animals from using the bridge and similarly, faunas tend to mistake vibrant colours as danger.

To protect yourself from potential insect bites, do wear long sleeves and pants.

You have absolutely no idea how excited we were when the long-awaited Coney Island finally opened its doors to the public on 10 October 2015. Coming across a pristine grassland in Singapore is considered a rarity, especially when its urban population rate is at 100%. Alternatively known as Pulau Serangoon, this 50-hectare ecologically sustainable park is a great way to disconnect from the hectic city life and reconnect with mother nature.

Here is our guide on what visitors can do at Coney Island Park. We have also included essential information i.e. directions on getting there and what to prepare for a half-day trip.

CASUARINA EXPLORATION

Made from timber of uprooted Casuarina trees, recycled sand and other natural materials, the environmentally friendly playground at Casuarina Exploration is great for all ages. Have a great time trying to keep your balance across the different stations, namely Caterpillar, Earthworm and Millipede. Yes, the adventure area is aptly named after worms.

BEACH POCKETS

Visitors are granted access to five different beach pockets of Coney Island. Do note that these beach areas do not boast snow-white sand but still do offer experiences unlike any other. There are sandflies at the coastal area so do wear long pants to minimise the risk of attacks.

BIRD WATCHING

From Oriental Magpie Robin to Baya Weavers, there are over 80 species of birds at Coney Island Park. Visitors can camp at the bird-watching hideout, where its partial green cover allows them to observe the birds closely without startling them with their presence.

CYCLING

Rent a bicycle from the rental shops at The Punggol Settlement or bring your own bike or scooter to explore Coney Island at a quicker pace. The entire route is only 2.4 kilometres so visitors can still easily complete the trail without cycling.

ABUNDANT FLORA

Take a stroll around Coney Island and admire its lush greenery. The gigantic Common Rhu trees and Lalang fields do pose great photographic opportunities but it is the critically endangered plants such as Horsfieldia Irya and Calophyllum Inophyllum at piqued our attention. In fact, some rare plants at Coney Island have already been assumed extinct.

BOARDWALK

The boardwalk section at Coney Island actually cuts through a mangrove forest. The wooden planks are made from fallen Casuarina trees and it is interesting to note that this tree breed is native to Singapore. It is advisable to not go off track without a guided tour as mangroves are susceptive to high tides.

DIVERSE WILDLIFE

There is an abundance of wildlife so do expect to see butterflies, lizards, mudskippers and whatnot. We saw a few signboards illustrating what to do when one encounters Cony Island’s resident cow and wild boars. While we did not actually see any bull or boars, it is important to remember not to provoke these free-roaming animals.

HOW TO GET TO CONEY ISLAND

By Car – Drive to The Punggol Settlement and park at the outdoor public carpark. Walk pass the restaurants and you will find signboards leading you to Coney Island. Embark on a 700-meter walk along the coastal boardwalk and you will soon see the front gate of Coney Island.

By Public Transport – Take the train to Punggol MRT Station and search for exit C (where the bus interchange is). Board bus 84 and alight at Punggol Road End. Walk towards The Punggol Settlement and there are signages at the walkway leading you to Coney Island’s West Entrance.

WHAT YOU SHOULD PREPARE

While the hike is suitable for beginners, we urge you to explore Coney Island in appropriate sports attire for maximum comfort. Slather aplenty of sunblock lotion and insect repellant to protect yourselves. It is also best to bring along a bottle of water – you will definitely be thirsty.

Here are five incredible nature walks for a day away from urban Singapore, without having to leave on a jet plane.

As we live in a technology-filled society, it’s tough to get involved in anything that doesn’t include a screen. Whether it’s your computer, television, or your mobile phone, I say it’s time to get unplugged, and indulge in some good old offline fun. Here are five weekend activities you can try without relying on technology:

1. HEAD OUTDOORS AND ENJOY THE SUN

There’re many things in this world that are meant to be enjoyed, and it’s time to pay attention to them. While you may argue that going online takes you places, when was the last time you admired nature on its own? And you don’t have to go far – you can take a leisurely stroll by the beach, or take a day off to admire the rustic sights of Pulau Ubin, or any one of the Southern islands nearby.

Alternatively, you can even pack a picnic and enjoy the lush, verdant spaces we have, like the Upper and Lower Peirce Reservoirs, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Gardens by The Bay or the Marina Barrage.

2. BE A LOCAL TOURIST FOR A DAY

Instead of paying attention to our own country, we’re usually jetting off, exploring foreign lands. But maybe it’s time to consider seeing what this Little Red Dot has to offer – and we’ve got plenty. History buffs can explore our museums (it’s especially a good time now that Singaporeans and PR citizens enjoy free admission), check out our oldest buildings, or experience old Singapore with the help of a trishaw. Or you can visit the various farms around the Lim Chu Kang area or check out the last kampong in Buangkok, and experience what life is like, away from the urban jungle.

3. MEET YOUR NEIGHBOURS

It may sound tacky, but hey, you get to know who they are at least. You can even invite your neighbours to a gathering, and have everyone get to know one another. But it’s really up to you. For me, a couple of neighbours took the initiative to rustle up the local community spirit, invited us to a potluck, and at the end of the day, we walked away with new friends, and (we think) a safer neighbourhood, where everyone keeps a look out for each other.

4. PICK UP A NEW SKILL OR TAKE PART IN NEW ACTIVITIES

If you’re the type who can’t sit still, this one’s probably for you. Look out for the event schedules from your nearest community centre, and check out the ones which you’re most interested in. You can choose from a diverse range of classes and activities including yoga, music lessons, baking, language classes or even flea markets (always a good time to clear your stash of unwanted items at home).

5. GET CRAFTY

Start your own scrapbooking project or visual journal with simple tools like a notebook, glue, coloured pens, scissors, and magazine and newspaper cut-outs. I like that this activity helps collect your thoughts, and may even relive wonderful memories you might’ve forgotten you had.

And even if you’re not the type who’s great at creating art, don’t worry – this is meant to be a form of expressing yourself, and it can even be relaxing. So don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself trying to create the opus of a lifetime.
