Balinese specialty health food establishment Clear Café is renowned for its all-encompassing menu of nourishing juices, tasty salads, sandwiches, Indonesian classics and raw/vegan dishes.

This Ubud-based café has proved to consumers that healthy food can actually taste insanely delicious.

Set foot into the multi-level café and be greeted by a splash of rainbow colours; the open-air gorgeous café is characterised by pastel-coloured wooden furniture and boasts an unrivalled view of Ubud’s tranquil countryside surroundings.

Definitely worth making a special detour if you are visiting Bali soon!

Even the author of ‘Eating For Beauty’ David Wolfe is a huge advocate of this beautiful cafe. The design might be a major draw, but we visited Clear Café primarily for its irresistible dishes. The ingredients used are sourced locally from the Island of Gods itself and the dishes are cooked in 100% pure coconut oil.

Clear Café’s menu is incredibly extensive! To the extent where diners would find themselves absolutely spoilt for choice. Kick start your meal with a power drink (RP$30) or nutritious milkshake (RP$35), before indulging in a refreshing salad (from RP$40 to RP$50).

Health junkies would be pleased to hear that the majority of Clear Café’s beverages are prepared with a superfood called Irish moss, which is essentially a seaweed jam-packed with nutritious minerals.

For something more substantial, select a wholesome sandwich (from RP$35 to RP$65), traditional Nasi Campur (RP$50) and/or Classic Mexican Cheddar Grilled Quesadillas (RP$40).

A meal here is beyond serene and we highly recommend it to any traveller who is interested in checking out Ubud’s healthy dining scene. There is also complimentary wifi at Clear Café, but do note that the café does not accept credit cards.

The organic dining scene in Ubud, Bali is flourishing. Health food restaurant Sari Organik is one of the pioneers that every foodie traveller should make a point to dine at. It is, undeniably, our favourite eatery among the gorgeous paddy fields in Bali.

The humble eatery first opened about 12 years ago with a focus on organic and sustainable produce. The family-run business is located right in the remote rice paddies where cars are prohibited to traverse through. You have to arrive either via a motorbike or by foot – which is quite a walk, but well worth it.

Despite its obscure location, the green restaurant sees no lack of patrons on a daily basis.

#4 PASAR UMUM UBUD – UBUD’S MARKET

Ubud Market is located right opposite the Ubud Palace. Despite being a touristy attraction, the market actually still caters to the locals – but only before 9:00 am. So get up early if you would like an authentic local experience. The vendors switch their fresh produce to souvenirs after 9:00 am to prepare for the large influx of tourists.

#5 SACRED MONKEY FOREST SANCTUARY

Everyone should not miss a trip to the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. At IDR 20,000 / SGD 2.10 per person, you get to experience walking along families of monkeys that roam freely around their territory.

#6 DIRTY DUCK DINER – ONE OF UBUD’S BEST DINING DESTINATIONS

Dirty Duck Diner has been labelled as one of Ubud’s must-eat destinations following the roaring success of its signature dish, Bebek Bengil. Their trademark crispy duck (IDR 92, 000 / SGD 9.20) has attracted attention from all over the world since 1990. The duck is steamed with Indonesian spices before being deep fried. It is then served with a slice of watermelon, sautéed potato, side raw salad and three types of spicy sambal chili paste. Several other duck variation dishes are also on the menu.

The Campuhan Ridge Walk is a scenic nature trail that starts from Ibah Hotel. The path to Campuhan Ridge may be a little confusing but the signboard along the trek will ensure that you are on the right track. The grass is greener at Tegalalang Rice Terrace’s side. This man-made Balinese wonder is no stranger to landscape photographers for its breathtaking panoramic view. The layering terraces have been purposefully created overtime by farmers to harvest rice more effectively; they accumulate water and promote its irrigation system.

Luwak Coffee Plantations are well known for their luwak coffee, which are produced from the droppings of civets. The creatures feed on coffee cherries but are unable to digest the seeds. Upon collection from the faeces, the coffee beans are cleaned, roasted and then grounded. While you can sample up to 14 other locally produced beverages such as rosella tea and vanilla coffee for free, tasting of the exotic luwak coffee will incur IDR 50,000 / SGD 5.20.

Corner House is inviting from every angle. A standalone glasshouse nestled in the quieter part of Jalan Petitenget, Gardin Bistro is a stunning restaurant that took our breath away. A trail through the garden led us to the mysterious and big wooden door, and we stepped in to an elegant space that is warmed by the sun rays. Gardin is romantic and every bit sexy, and so is their menu. Slightly on the pricier side, but we trust that your date would be impressed. The main courses were sadly nothing much to hype about, but their desserts left us lingering for more.

LIVINGSTONE CAFE & BAKERY

A little country style, a little Australian, and every bit comforting. Livingstone Cafe & Bakery is among our favourite spots for breakfast in Seminyak, and it is impossible to not fall in love with the bright space. It has a bakery with fresh daily bakes, a counter of pretty cakes and pastries, and a hearty menu with classic brunch favourites. Customise your own breakfast, or pick from the list – we loved the Classic Fluffy Pancakes (RP65,000) and The Baker’s Big Breakfast (RP90,000).

PETITENGET

There are plenty of good restaurants along Jalan Petitenget, and one of our favourite places is Petitenget – a casual and chic French bistro. It is the kind of place where you can go for breakfast and coffee, and grab a magazine to spend the rest of the day at. It is equally charming at night, and its comforting menu makes it easy to understand why the bistro is so well-liked by expats and travellers.

REVOLVER EXPRESSO

Revolver Espresso is one of the coolest coffee joints in Seminyak, Bali. If you love coffee, and enjoy cafe-hopping, you have to drop by Revolver for a cuppa when you are exploring Jalan Laksmana. One will be hard-pressed to find Revolver Espresso unless they are in the know, or stumble on it entirely by accident. The easiest way is to look out for Bali Clinic as they are tucked in a lane opposite the clinic. Alternatively, you can enter from the back of Home Store or This is a Love Song store.

SARI ORGANIK

For the quintessential Ubud experience, you got to dine the local way among the padi fields. Our lunch at Sari Organik became the most memorable one at Ubud. It is a long walk in to the diner, we’d not deny; we took 30 minutes. But we were rewarded with a closeness to the ruralness, and a wholesome meal that was prepared with fresh produce from the fields. We dined with a view of the vast padi fields, decorated with hay stacks and with dogs running around freely; it was one refreshing experience for city kids like us.

SISTERFIELDS CAFE

Among the many new names to Seminyak’s dining scene, Sisterfields ranks the most popular and it is not hard to understand why. It was pouring the day we dropped by, but at 10am, the cafe was packed; nothing and no one seemed bothered by the rain. On its all-day menu, there were too many options that enticed us. Of salads, eggs, burgers and green juices, Sisterfields is the it place to be at for breakfast when in Seminyak.

THE COFFEE LIBRARY

Sitting right in the heart of Seminyak, The Coffee Library is chic and outstanding. The exterior features cascading vines and parked motorbikes, but do step in for some fresh brew and light bites. We enjoyed the Mushroom Stir Fry (RP48,000) and Steady Chicken (RP60,000). If you need your caffeine, lattes and flat whites are at RP32,000 per cup.

THE FAT TURTLE

Very new to the cafe scene in Seminyak, The Fat Turtle is fast becoming a favourite among holiday-goers with their impressive menu at even more amazing prices. We did a double take when we first saw the menu, but not kidding – Green Tea Churros (RP27,000), Red Velvet Pancakes (RP45,000) and Brekky Sandwich (RP40,000).

But what took our breath away was the Kaffir Lime Leaf Sweet Corn Fritters (RP50,000) – a beautiful dish that includes crispy bacon, tomato jam, poached eggs and avocado Hollandaise. Definitely a must-go at Seminyak, we’d say!

Babi Guling Ibu Oka

Babi Guling, or suckling pig, is one of the most famous food in Bali. Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka is a landmark in Bali, and it is known to serve one of the best, if not the best Babi Guling. Rice topped with suckling pig skin, grilled sausage, grilled pork, and deep-fried pork, Babi Guling (Rp 40,000) is good for the soul but bad for the arteries. It is one of the things that you must eat in Bali.

Bebek Bengil

Besides Babi Guling, Bali is also known for the traditional Balinese deep fried duck. Bebek Bengil, also known as the Dirty Duck Diner, rose to fame with its crispy dirty duck, and it is now a dining destination in Ubud. The crispy duck (Rp 92,000) is indeed very good – tender, succulent and flavourful, with a crackly-crisp skin. It is the benchmark for how a good duck should taste like. In a word, heavenly.

Food lovers also come to Bebek Bengil for its Balinese Smoked Duck (Rp 255,000), a whole duck smoked in the traditional way with spices wrapped in beatle nut leaf. However, you need to order it one day in advance.

Bebek Tepi Sawah Restaurant

Another place that you must try is Bebek Tepi Sawah Restaurant, which is also famous for its duck dishes. It is a huge outdoor restaurant with many pavilions surrounding paddy fields. The crispy duck on its own was very good, but what made it even better was the sambal. We also tried the grilled duck – a pretty decent version, but not as impressive as the crispy duck. The highlight here is the legendary Bebek Betutu (Rp 97,000), or Balinese smoked duck.

It is difficult to decide between between Bebek Bengil and Bebek Tepi Sawah, but if we had to choose, the latter edges out for its beautiful paddy fields backdrop.

Casa Luna

Casa Luna is an institution in Ubud. It first opened in 1992 and has since become a must-visit for food lovers. The menu is comprehensive and affordable. It includes breakfast items, organic salads, homemade pastas, Balinese food, bread and pastries. The coffee here is also very good as the baristas are trained by The Five Senses coffee team from Australia. Casa Luna is a good spot to chill out and relax when you are in Ubud.

Mozaic Restaurant

Mozaic Restaurant, Bali’s fine dining temple, is the destination for any hard core food lover. Having won many accolades, it is the most famous restaurant in Bali, if not Indonesia. We had both the Discovery Menu (Rp 700,000++/pax) – which combines classic French cooking techniques with local Indonesian flavours and ingredients – and the Chef’s Tasting Menu (Rp 900,000++/pax). The dishes were perfectly executed with intriguing flavours, but we were not blown away. Perhaps we were expecting a little more. Nonetheless, Mozaic is still worth a try if you want to splurge on a fine dining experience.

Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Ibu Mangku

Lunch at Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Ibu Mangku. This is a humble local eatery where only locals frequent. It is known to have one of the best Nasi Campur Bali in Ubud. There is only one item to order – the Nasi Ayam Campur (Rp 15,000). Day in day out, they only prepare and are specialised in this local delight that Balinese call their comfort food. It is cheap and delicious.

Naughty Nuri’s Warung & Grill

Life changing. That is how I would describe the pork ribs from Naughty Nuri’s. The original outlet in Ubud may not be as big as the one in Jalan Batubelig (Seminyak), but it is a must-eat place when you are in this part of Bali.

It is ranked as one of the most popular tourist destinations, and stands out among the numerous restaurants and eateries in Bali. With dirty martinis and fingers-licking good pork ribs, you know that you will definitely have a great time at Naughty Nuri’s.

Sari Organik

We walked about 800m from the main road to Sari Organik – cars are not able to enter – and we were rewarded with nature’s magnificence. Acres after acres of paddy fields spread across the horizon, with lots of chickens and ducks wandering around – now, this is what I call dining with a view. Warung Bodag Maliah at Sari Organik offers wholesome organic food. For me, it is certainly one of the places that I will return to whenever I am in Ubud. Come here for a meal and spend some time with Mother Nature.

Warung Pulau Kelapa

Warung Pulau Kelapa came highly recommended by our local friends. It is well-known as they serves traditional Indonesian food with no MSG, and grow their own vegetables and fruits at the back of the warung. The food is cheap and very good. We tried a few dishes, including the Nasi Campur, a dish of rice topped with meat, vegetables, and egg.
