THE TRANQUIL ANGEL ISLAND STATE PARK

Though always overshadowed by Alcatraz, Angel Island State Park holds its own by being one of the most beautiful and historic islands in the San Francisco Bay that you simply must visit.

This hidden gem is not only a great place to have fun, but it’s also a location steeped in rich American history. Often described as the Ellis Island of the West, Angel Island was known as the first stop Asian immigrants encountered back in the 1900s where they had to be processed before being entering the United States.

COFFEE CULTURE IN THE MISSION DISTRICT

Described as one of the more diverse and lively neighbourhoods in San Francisco, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what to do in the Mission District. One thing for certain is that this area is known for being a caffeine fix hub, which features some of the best coffee places in SF.

One cafe to look out for is the popular Stanza Coffee which is located near the intersection of 16th and Valencia. This hole-in-the-wall coffee shop brews a mean and delicious cup of coffee, and serves a variety of pastries and small bites to go with your cup of Joe!

GOOD OL’ CHINATOWN

Known as the oldest and most established Chinatowns in the United States, the journey through SF’s Asian pride and joy begins at the iconic Dragon’s Gate before expanding into a bustling maze of streets and alleys that covers 24 city blocks.

Almost similar to a little Hong Kong, you’ll be able to find a variety of dim sum joints, traditional Chinese eateries, as well as quaint bakeries that sell yummy baked goods such as Egg Tart, Wife Biscuit and Polo Bun.

CATCH A BALL GAME AT ORACLE PARK

Widely regarded as one of the premier ballparks in the United States, Oracle Park is home to three-time Major League Baseball World Series Champion, the San Francisco Giants.

HITCH A RIDE ON THE AGE-OLD SAN FRANCISCO CABLE CAR

Nothing quite compares to a truly unique experience on a San Francisco Cable Car, especially when you are tired of climbing the windy hills.

Invented in San Francisco nearly 150 years ago, and named a National Historic Landmark in 1964, these cable cars have been kept in tip-top shape for visitors to get around the city using their three cable car lines.

The cable car offers two kinds of experience: One where you are seated, and another (more for the brave thrill-seeker) where you’re standing on the outside of the car, holding onto the special poles provided.

SHOP TO YOUR HEART’S CONTENT AT UNION SQUARE

This central shopping district is a favourite amongst tourists because of the close proximity between department stores, upscale boutiques, gift shops, and dining establishments. Easily accessible by foot and public transportation, don’t be surprised if you end up spending the entire day here!

Notable shopping destinations that you’ll find here are Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York, Apple, Williams-Sonoma, Nike and Victoria’s Secret.

Sotto Mare – the brainchild of chef Gigi Fiorucci – is one of San Francisco’s most popular restaurants. The casual dining establishment is so famous that it has been long regarded as a gourmet institution amongst San Franciscans.

The speciality seafood restaurant is notorious for its incredibly long queues but the wait clearly has not deterred avid foodies from returning.

The restaurant takes immense pride in serving the “best damn crab cioppino” and if you look around, you would soon realise that is exactly what everyone came for. For the uninitiated, the cioppino is a classic San Francisco seafood stew invented and subsequently popularised by the Italian fishermen who worked at Fisherman’s wharf in the 1930s.

First thing first, do note that Sotto Mare only accepts reservations for parties of three and more, so if you are dining solo or as a couple, you will have to try their luck by walking in.

We waited for more than an hour for a table for two and another 30 minutes before the signature Crab Cioppino (US$41) was served to us.

What can we say? Good things are worth waiting for!

Sotto Mare’s Crab Cioppino is essentially a gigantic pot of piping hot aromatic seafood stew that can feed up to three customers.

Rummage through the savoury dish and you will find generous amounts of clams, crabs, mussels, scallops, shrimps and penne pasta submerged in an addictive tomato-based broth.

Put on a bib, take a whiff and dig in like there’s no tomorrow.

Cioppino aside, Sotto Mare’s one-page menu too features an impressive selection of oysters, salads, pasta and other scrumptious seafood delicacies. Their oysters are superbly fresh (West Coast – US$1.50 each, East Coast – US$2.50 each) and we devoured them effortlessly instantly.

#9 LANDS END

#10 LOMBARD STREET

#11 PAINTED LADIES

Painted Ladies refers to this iconic stretch of colourful vintage Victorian houses along the corner of Hayes Street and Steiner Street. This attraction is a hit amongst photographers for its stunning juxtaposition – beautiful Victorian homes with San Francisco’s skyscrapers in the backdrop.

#12 PALACE OF FINE ARTS

You might recognise the Palace of Fine Arts from the following dated movies, The Room and The Rock. The gorgeous monument is listed in San Francisco Designated Landmarks and is surrounded by a manmade lagoon. Designed by architect Bernard Maybeck, the infrastructure is largely inspired by the Greeks and Romans.

#13 PRESIDIO OF SAN FRANCISCO

Presidio of San Francisco is a historically rich park that once accommodated the native Costanoans, Spanish colonialists and eventually transformed into the designated military post for the U.S. Army.

#14 SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

The 235,000-square-foot modern museum exhibits internationally acclaimed collections of modern and contemporary art – definitely worth a special trip and the admission ticket fee.

#15 UNION SQUARE

Situated in the heart of San Francisco and spanning across 1.05 hectares, Union Square is a public plaza boasting endless dining, entertainment and retail options. Keep your eyes peeled during festive holidays as many exciting events will be taking place at this hub. A ride on the cable car is not free, but visitors can still admire the transport from afar.

Located 13,593 kilometres away from Singapore with previously no direct flights available, San Francisco used to be a far-fetched vacation destination. And this no longer the case.

The Golden Gate City is now only 15 hours and 30 minutes away, and yes, it is a non-stop flight! Man, are we so done with transits!

FREQUENCY AND SCHEDULE

An eastbound United Airline flight departs Singapore Changi Airport at 8:45am daily and is scheduled to arrive San Francisco International Airport at 9.15am on the same day (local time).

On the other hand, a westbound flight departs San Francisco International Airport at 11:25pm daily and arrives at Singapore Changi Airport at 6:15am (local time) two days later.

MILESTONES WORTH CELEBRATING

Flying 13,593 kilometres in just a span of 15 hours and 30 minutes is an impressive feat. The usage of modern engines and improved aerodynamics have enabled United Airlines’ aircraft to fly faster and farther in an efficient manner. Izakaya Sozai

Right in the corner of Inner Sunset neighborhood, a traditional Japanese food soars at Izakaya Sozai. There must be something seductive about its big plate-glass windows that almost reach the sidewalk, because seated inside on the wooden banquettes are all engaged diners and waiting outside for a place in the 40-seat dining room are eager eaters. Sophie’s Crepes

Sophie’s Crepe is tucked in the corner of the shopping centre in Japantown. It is not hard to find because this place is always crowded with people, especially college students and young adults. They serve French crepe but are done in Japanese style. Their crepe has a really smooth texture and the right amount of sweetness and butter taste. The fillings and toppings are what make the crepe “Japanese” – azuki beans, green tea ice cream, red bean syrup, etc. The crepe is rolled up into a cone (which makes it easy to eat on-the-go) and a generous amount of all-things-sweet is topped on it.

Ghirardelli Square

Simply a chocolate heaven! Ghirardelli is a famous local chocolate brand in San Francisco. Café Jacqueline is said to be one of the most romantic restaurants in San Francisco. The interior has a simple décor that gives an old-fashioned Parisian feel and I think what makes this place romantic is the quiet ambience in the surrounding North Beach and Telegraph Hill neighborhood.

Café Jacqueline is famous for its soufflé – hearty yet so light, and fluffy yet so filling. Their soufflé is huge (believe me, it’s going to be the biggest soufflé you’ve ever seen) and is good to share among 4 people. And for a little surprise, besides dolce flavors like chocolate, raspberry and Grand Marnier, they also serve savory soufflé like lobster, crab, and asparagus.

Mama’s

Located at North Beach neighborhood’s Washington Square Park, which is formerly the Bohemian part of the city, Mama’s is famous because it seriously makes the best breakfast in town. Since Mama and Papa Sanchez first opened their doors over 50 years ago, Mama’s has been continuing a tradition in serving fluffy omelettes, homemade jams, thick pancakes, and freshly baked pastries and breads. In short, Mama’s is truly a breakfast legend.

Golden Gate Bakery

This Chinatown bakery certainly does not stand out from the surrounding businesses in terms of appearance. With their humble shop front, you wouldn’t expect that they serve amazing cult-like egg tarts. There is always a line outside the shop, but when you make it inside, everyone crowds together towards the counter. You have to edge your way up and place your order. Although they may pass you by in favor of a regular, I encourage you to stand your ground to get these tarts of gold.

Boudin Sourdough Bakery and Café

Boudin bakes the classic sourdough breads and brews the creamy clam chowder. And the perfect way to enjoy these is to have your clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. The slight hint of sourness will blend nicely with the salty and thick sourdough bread. Boudin also sells sourdough breads in cute animal shapes that you can take home and cans of clam chowders that can be good souvenirs from the wharf. You are also able to tour the kitchen or watch the bakers through the glass windows along the street. The shop is sort of magical too as you can see how they move the breads in baskets that are hung and moved along the steel bars.

Miette

Miette is a modern, cute, sweet, pinkish and delicious pastry shop. Their cakes are impeccable and traditionally American, which are birthday-party perfect. Besides cakes and cookies, Miette also bakes French macarons, with delicate and elegant flavors like rose, chocolate orange and pistachio. Miette is the French word for “crumb” and I guess it aptly describes the scale of their petite pastries displayed in their minimal yet charming decorations.

Hai Ky Mi Gia

This Chinese and Vietnamese eating house at downtown San Francisco cooks noodles that taste a lot like the Bakmie in those shop houses in my hometown, Jakarta. Hai Ky Mi Gia is famous for its braised duck noodle, in which the fall-off-the-bone meat from the duck is so tender and the spices used to braise the duck is just spot on. Besides consistency and authenticity in their food, the portions are good for sharing too with very reasonable prices.

Renowned for its cool summers, fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture and historic cable cars, San Francisco is inarguably one of the most beautiful cities in the United States. With only 49 square miles, it is one of the most compact and walk-able cities in the world (yes, the hills can be a good walk too).

Although one could walk around the entire city, roaming from neighborhood to neighborhood, in just one day, fret not as you can always find every aspect to suit your travel persona here such that you’ll never want to leave this gorgeous place.

Here is a list of some of my favorite things to do in San Francisco that will make you leave your heart in the city.

1. Find your treasure at the Treasure Island

Just like what the name implies, Treasure Island is a treasure in itself – a treasure that gives the best night scenery of San Francisco and the Bay Bridge. It is my favorite secret hideout in the secluded part of the Bay Area, like a private little heaven where one can gaze at the thousands of little yellow lights across the bay that seem like stars in the night sky, which have descended into the earth.

2. Hop on the historic cable car

Although it’s true that only tourists would spend time queuing up for cable car rides to get around the city, the cable cars in San Francisco is an attraction in itself and in my opinion, the best way to get amazing views of the city. My favorite cable car route is the Powell-Hyde line that heads north to Fisherman’s Wharf area and then descends south to the bustling Market Street while passing by some of San Francisco’s scenic jaunts.

3. Shop for local products at the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market

The Ferry Building is a Beaux Art architecture that is located near one of the piers. It holds famer’s market every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning where farmers around the Bay Area set up stalls to sell their fresh seasonal products.

The vendors are very enthusiastic about their products and they are more than glad to introduce their food to you. My favorites in the farmer’s market are the stone fruits, chocolates, jams and honey.

4. Watch a musical performance at the War Memorial Opera House

The War Memorial Opera House is home to San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet Company, and is a host to a variety of events and performances, like The Nutcracker and Cinderella. The elegantly decorated place in the French Renaissance style era has a refurbished interior that is graced with state-of-the-art equipment. And the selling point of watching a performance here is the tickets are priced at a lower rate than in Singapore and of course, the overall ambience is different and magical.

5. Have a drink at the nostalgic Buena Vista Café

There is a popular myth that the Irish Coffee (a cocktail consisting of hot coffee and Irish whiskey) was invented here at the Buena Vista Café. Regardless if it was true or not, getting a glass of Irish Coffee has become a San Francisco must-do thing on your checklist, simply because their Irish Coffee is delicious and iconic. It is also entertaining just to watch the venerable tenders pour up to ten whiskey-laden coffees at a time while you sip gently into the timeless cocktail.
