Nested along the rows of bars at Seah Street is Papi’s Tacos. Opened by the crew behind the famous Employees Only, this back-alley taqueria blends fun with food to serve up only the best and most authentic Mexican delights.

From excellently done burritos to tacos, mezcal to a range of tequila-forward cocktails, this humble joint is not only great for a quick taco fix, it is also perfect for winding down after a long workday.

Adorning the shirts with “Papi knows best” on them, the chefs display what real Mexican food is like while they scoop black beans over their tomato rice, toss giant bowls of salsa and fold burritos like it’s nobody’s business—right from behind the open counter.

We ordered Papi’s Classic Margarita (S$15), Steak Quesadilla (S$15), Burrito de Carnitas (S$15) and a set of Tacos de Pescado (S$13).

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

It didn’t take long for the margarita to arrive. The margarita was a zesty lime cocktail that was nicely balanced without the tequila overpowering the flavour of the lime. We had ours shaken instead of frozen so it diluted a lot less quickly and retained the tang for much longer.

What’s different here is that they use coarse rock salt to line the rim of the glass instead of fine grain salt, which while was an interesting change-up, to some it might make the drink too salty to enjoy.

While it’s much smaller than the likes of Stuff’d, the Burrito de Carnitas is still an extremely generous portion meant to satiate the hungry. It was filled with slow-braised pork, Mexican rice, black beans, shredded cheese, pico de gallo and sour cream.

Not to be daunted by the amount of rice and black beans in it, the pico de gallo was extremely fresh and tangy and provided that acidity required to cut through all the flavours.

The Tacos de Pescado is a set of flour tortillas topped with grilled white dory, fresh cabbage, and smoked chipotle aioli.

It proves that size doesn’t matter here as, despite its small size, they were handheld pockets of flavour. The firm juicy white fish flaked off beautifully and was complemented by the creamy rich aioli, which was slightly spicy without overbearing.

The fresh cabbage provided a good crunch to add on to the layers of texture in the dish. Our only pity was that we devoured them too quickly.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Way back when the three founders grew up in Texas and Los Angeles, they were heavily inspired by street-style tacos, which are all too readily available in the U.S.. And the birth of this unique concept was to be unlike any other. Marinated BBQ meats with Korean spices and chilli are so popular, and they decided to wrap these meats on a nice warm taco – simply brilliant and very convenient.

Crowd favourite dishes include Kimchi Carnitas Fries (which was voted the “best dish in Korea” by 10 Magazine), Galbi Short Rib Tacos (marinated short rib, ssamjang aioli, Asian slaw, cilantro, chopped onions, and roasted sesame seeds on a handmade tortilla) and Mango Prawn Quesadillas (chipotle marinated prawn flash fried and topped with cilantro lime crema and fresh mango salsa).

You can now head down to Vatos Urban Tacos at South Beach Quarter for your Ko-Mex fix. Vatos Urban Tacos will be opening more outlets across Singapore, and we are keeping our eyes peeled.

From the people behind Lucha Loco, Super Loco is an upbeat Mexican restaurant along Robertson Quay that boasts Mexican vibes; it will enchant you to no end. The specially curated menu features Mexican street finds, power packed with delicious flavours that would be an absolute delight to your tastebuds.

The restaurant follows the colour theme of pastels and neon – inspired by the owner’s travels in the city of Mexico – and that adds to the fun of dining by the river walk.

With a menu full of Mexican delights and alcohol, be ready for a unique dining experience as you sip on some of their signature alcoholic concoctions while enjoying a dish or two from their dinner menu.

Since last year, Super Loco introduced a series of Mexican brunch items available on weekends. A striking contrast from the usual run-of-the-mill breakfast staples, these wondrous creations are usually found on the streets of Mexico, then gradually being served in cafes, and now, brought here to Singapore and onto your brunch plates.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

A takeaway counter is also set up at the shopfront, and at night, they sell Mexican tacos, beers and soft serve for the supper fanatics. Merchandises specially imported from Mexico are also aplenty.

Fancy a Mexican Sandwich also known as a Torta? Then have a go at Super Loco’s Pulled Pork Torta (S$15) with shredded slow braised pork shoulders, habanero mayo, refried beans and topped off with an apply slaw – a medley of robust elements perfect for a hearty brunch on a weekend.

Before I start, I have to admit that I know very little about Mexican food, so I can’t really talk with any real authority about it. But my friend Mike and his Latin American friends have been to many Mexican restaurants and they agreed that Casa Latina restaurant at Waterloo street serves the best Mexican food in Singapore.

While there are quite a few Mexican Restaurants in Singapore, most of them are offering Tex-Mex cuisine. Casa Latina, on the other hand, prides itself on serving authentic Mexican food. From the brief encounter with the chef, I understand that he has many years of experience in cooking Mexican food, and the restaurant actually import most of their sauces and spices directly from Mexico.

Casa Latina Mexican Restaurant has a rather extensive menu: there are around 17 appetisers/soup/salad ($12-18); over 20 main courses which comprise meat and seafood ($20-34); and 4 desserts ($8-9). With so many items to choose from, it is naturally advisable to come with a group of friends so that you can order more and share. Since there was only two of us that day, we ordered 4 items and spent about $40 each.

We started with Casa Latina’s Melted Cheese ($16) and it was very very good. The Ceviche Estilo ($20) – pictured in the opening of this post – was also a great appetiser. Shrimps cooked with tomatoes, onion, coriander and fresh chillies; very fresh and appetising.

I don’t usually order soup when I am dining out in restaurants. To me, it seems a little silly to pay so much for soup – I’d rather get an additional dessert. But Mike spoke highly of the chilli poblano soup ($10), so I had to try it for myself. Intriguing is the only word to describe it.

The photo above doesn’t really do justice to the Las Carnitas ($29). The amazing pork confit was served with corn tortillas and a divine Mexican sauce. Initially, I was eating the meat wrapped in the tortilla. But after a while, I was annoyed that the wrapping process was taking too much time, so I decided to eat the meat directly (without the tortilla). Yum.

Most people usually mention Cafe Iguna or Margarita’s when you ask them for their favourite Mexican Restaurants in Singapore. Although Casa Latina has very good Mexican food, not many people know about them. I was there for lunch on a weekday and we were the only table. Mike told me that business is better during weekends, but no restaurant can survive solely on weekend crowd.

If you have always wanted to try Mexican food, I urge you to check out this Mexican restaurant along Waterloo street.
