Walk into this quaint little cafe at the far end of the trendy Tiong Bahru neighbourhood and you will be greeted with a unique interior and atmosphere that you will not be able to find anywhere else.

What used to be a traditional Chinese medicine hall is now The Dispensary, a one-of-a-kind cafe concept that preserved what was left of its former tenant, to weave it into their new and fresh old-meets-new concept.

Cafe hopping can be pretty boring after some time, if you see the same interior over and over again. Unless you encounter gems like The Dispensary, with an interior that marries old and new perfectly with the old Chinese medicine shelves still on display as a backdrop of the cafe counter.

The Dispensary has both an air-conditioned indoor sitting and an alfresco dining area outside, perfect for beautiful Instagram shots or to relax on a non-humid day. A mini balcony area is also sometimes open for customers to hang out at.

Their cakes are especially raved about by many, so it should be on the top of your must-try list if you do make a trip down! If you like retro things or are into traditional Singapore heritage, you will definitely enjoy your time here. Yes, there is free wifi too!

If you are an avid Instagram user, you might have seen insanely photogenic dishes of Paddy Hills taking the platform by storm. For squid ink lovers, you have to try their Squid Ink Tagliatelle (S$24) that is served with pan seared scallops, and rice puffs for an added crunch. The ikura and tobikko added a creative texture to the tangy pasta with a resounding burst of flavours.

Alas, the widely acclaimed Berry Ricotta Hotcakes (S$19)! This beauty won our hearts with its crisp texture and crumbly batter, topped with an assortment of berries, mascarpone and flower petals. It was like a garden served on a plate; insanely gorgeous. Maple syrup was also tucked in between the batter to keep the pancakes moist.

There was an immediate sense of warmth once you step into Carol Mel Cafe. Simple and unpretentious, The Oven Cafe Bistro drew us in with their minimalistic interior and cozy atmosphere. A popular item on the menu is the Chicken Alfredo (S$13), featuring a big slice of oven-baked chicken.

Characteristic and thematic in their own rights, these finds make great hang-out places and some are already our regular haunts. Some are a stone’s throw from town, and they are alternatives to go to when you need to get away from the crazy crowd. Else, there are cosy units that serve burgers and truffle fries that pack a punch. And we won’t say no to more options for our daily cuppa.

CAFE MELBA

We always love a good “glasshouse cafe” with high ceilings and ample sunlight streaming in. Cafe Melba is one of those rare ones like that in Singapore, with both indoor and outdoor seating, a family-friendly environment, and honest food for the tummy. We popped by on a weekend for brunch, and fell in love with the truffle fries and Homemade Brioche French Toast. The Eggs Florentine and pancakes were decent, too.

Carvers & Co got our attention for their concise and highly-raved menu. It does not have a fancy decor to boast of, but it seems they are a comfort for many residents.

CHOCK FULL OF BEANS

A café that serves adorable 3D latte art, how cute is that? We found Chock Full of Beans sitting in a quiet corner of Changi Village (right next to the hawker centre), and were drawn towards the latte art that was on display.

While we were bowled over by the baristas’ serious attention to detail, we also enjoyed the cafe’s Iced Rose Latte and Lychee Lime Cooler. If you’re there for a meal, Chock Full of Beans serves mains and desserts, too.

One of the newest cafes to open in the East, Craftsmen Speciality Coffee at Siglap V has already garnered a strong following among locals and expats who reside in the hood. The food menu is simple and it is made up of mainly all-day breakfast and brunch items like Croissant Sandwiches (S$15), Toast (S$5 – S$15), Pies (S$9.50 – S$12.50), as well as sweet and savoury Waffles (S$15).

PERCOLATE COFFEE

Predominantly brown, Percolate Coffee sits about 20 people, with small wooden tables and chairs, and a simple vase of Baby’s Breath on every table. Nothing overly pretentious or chi-chi, just a space for you to unwind over a cuppa and light music.

Coffee beans are from Papa Palheta and Nylon Coffee Roasters, so you can take your pick on your Whites and Capps. They do pretty decent latte art, and we love how the white cups sit against its wooden furnishing. Quaint afternoons are made up of these.

SINPOPO BRAND

Run by the folks behind Awfully Chocolate, Sinpopo Brand is a nostalgic café along Joo Chiat Road and it encompasses everything a good cafe should be – welcoming and cosy, comforting local food with a twist, and exceptionally interesting desserts and drinks. And what Sinpopo impressed us with the most is the attention to details and all its subtle nostalgic touches – evident from the interior and dishes.

TIAN KEE & CO

Previously located at the old Dakota estate, Tian Kee & Co has reopened a new takeaway outlet at 46 Siglap Drive, off Frankel Avenue.

For those of you who are not familiar with Tian Kee & Co, it started as a local provision shop back in 1958 and it evolved into a bakery cafe at Dakota Crescent—one of Singapore’s oldest public housing estates. Unfortunately, the neighbourhood had to make way in late 2016 due to developments under Mountbatten’s estate renewal plans, and so did Tian Kee & Co.

#23 TO-GATHER CAFE

While there are many concept cafes in the East of Singapore, To-gather Cafe in Bedok (next to Fengshan Market) is one gem where you can unwind from work.

Walk into the cafe and you will notice that cursive writings of inspirational quotes and song lyrics fill up the walls in the most elegant manner. There is also a wall featuring post-it notes with messages and compliments penned down personally by customers.

The best part? Most of the main courses are affordably priced under S$12. To-gather Cafe is one place where you can have a good meal without breaking the bank.

These days, we don’t need to travel out of our neighbourhood to get good food and desserts. Cafes are spouting out everywhere, and we are definitely not complaining. We have cafes at every district in Singapore, and no one gets left out.

The West of Singapore may not be a favourite part if you do not reside there, for it is pretty far out from the main areas and can indeed get a little out of the way. But because we are such fans of artisan places and cosy spaces, we would travel just for a slice of rainbow cake or a good cuppa, yes?

If you are a resident of the West, this post might not be of much surprise to you anymore (or is it?), but if you are from everywhere else, this should spark some venturing out and give you some ideas on where to eat out at next.

ARTISAN BOULANGERIE CO.

Artisan Boulangerie Co. (ABC) is an artisan bakery and cafe with French influence. It has been expanding rapidly and there are currently seven outlets across the island. Over at The Metropolis branch, the cafe serves an array of bread, pastries, desserts and sandwiches.

W39 BISTRO

It is a clean state of white.

Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters is one of the new kids on the block, but not that new if you are familiar with OZ Specialty Coffee. Formerly located at the other part of the Upper Thomson neighbourhood, the brand has undergone a major revamp and repositioning and now sits proudly as Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters at the edge of the busy stretch of Upper Thomson. It is a much bigger scale, with a proper dine-in space because they serve more than coffee and desserts now.

Its new space is bright and clean. Sleek lamps hang from the ceiling, shining down on the longitudinal wooden tables. Sunlight streams in through the huge panelled windows and fills the space with warmth. Sitting at the corner of the cafe is a rack of merchandise neatly displayed and ready for purchase – from filters to drippers, you are free to bring home a piece of Pacamara.

We actually love the minimalistic white-washed outlook of the cafe. We like it so damn much. But the food menu was a severe disappointment. What could have been otherwise a well-designed menu with both classic brunch favourites and interesting creations was let down by its price point and mediocre execution.

On our table was an item from the salad section, the brunch and the mains each. We really fancy a good beetroot salad for nothing is quite as gratifying than sweet beet slices alongside crumbly feta, chick peas and arugula. But Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters’ Beetroot Salad (S$14) is a ridiculous portion of five beet slices, some small squares of butternut and very countable arugula leaves with barely-there lemon vinaigrette dressing. This is by far the most expensive salad (for its puny portion) we’ve ever paid for in a cafe.

From the brunch menu (served till 2:30pm), we had the Red Velvet Pancakes (S$16) served with mascarpone and fresh berries. While it was rather fluffy, it came in a sad shade of brown and we were looking forward to the mild chocolatey sweetness, but to no avail. Seems like there is nothing really red velvety about the pancakes after all. Oh well. And the Wagyu Burger (S$22) from the mains came standing tall and complete with chips, but the patty was a tad too dry.

Our saving grace for the day? The White (5oz for S$5), that came with a decent latte art and a familiar taste of OZ Specialty.

It is a shame that such a cosy cafe with a strategic location would fail so badly in their food. Nonetheless, the big switch from a hole-in-the-wall coffee joint is still deserving of an applause and worth a visit.

Another neighbourhood gem that has been around in the East is Percolate Coffee at Bedok, and we only visited recently. But never too late, because now that we have fallen in love with it, we will definitely come back when we find ourselves in the neighbourhood.

It is yet another small space as with most neighbourhood cafes in Singapore, but Percolate Coffee is well-designed, chic and serves good coffee. Predominantly brown, the café sits about 20 people, with small wooden tables and chairs, and a simple vase of Baby’s Breath on every table. Nothing overly pretentious or chi-chi, just a space for you to unwind over a cuppa and light music.

The service is excellent. Everyone is friendly and ever ready to help with recommendations on the daily cakes and brew. We really love how this simple touch can complete a diner’s experience, because everyone loves to feel welcomed and attended to, yes?

The cakes display is tastefully done up albeit small-scale and simple, and we ended up with a slice of Lemon Raspberry Cake. It was nothing much to shout about, but the coffee more than makes up for it. Other cake options that are on rotation include Salted Caramel Cake and Red Velvet Cake. And if you need a midday nibble, Percolate also has some croissants and jams for your enjoyment.

Coffee beans are from Papa Palheta and Nylon Coffee Roasters, so you can take your pick on your Whites and Capps. They do pretty decent latte art, and we love how the white cups sit against its wooden furnishing. Quaint afternoons are made up of these.

And the best part of them all? Nothing is overpriced. It is by no surprise that it is so popular among the residents in the neighbourhood, and people who come from all parts of the island just for some chilling out.

PERCOLATE COFFEE

A great addition to the Bedok neighbourhood, Percolate Coffee is well-designed, chic and serves good coffee. Predominantly brown, the café sits about 20 people, with small wooden tables and chairs, and a simple vase of Baby’s Breath on every table. Nothing overly pretentious or chi-chi, just a space for you to unwind over a cuppa and light music.

There is a small selection of cakes like Red Velvet, Lemon Raspberry and Salted Caramel, while coffee beans are from Papa Palheta and Nylon Coffee Roasters, so you can take your pick on your Whites and Capps.

PLAIN VANILLA

Plain Vanilla Bakery has been gaining a legion of followers and it is easy to see why. Freshly baked good old-fashioned cupcakes – with flavours like cinnamon brown sugar, chocolate hazelnut, red velvet and milk chocolate chip. Simple joy like these always tugs the heart strings. Its newest cafe along Yong Siak Street has a small communal table where you can sit around to have a cupcake and drinks.

Tian Kee & Co is nestled within the old estate of Dakota, and its rural setting exudes an old charm that is so rare in the present Singapore. When we first drove past the unassuming block of low-rise flats, we saw a lovely sight – simple but traditional-looking monochrome signboard, wooden high table and seats, and ceiling fans. We knew we were going to like this retro concept.

THE TINY ROASTER

The Tiny Roaster reminds us of Omotesando Koffee and Nylon Coffee Roaster – small, humble and homely. It has just opened two months ago in a tiny outlet on the ground level of a HDB in the West Coast neighbourhood.

Besides supplying coffee beans, coffee equipment and related merchandise, The Tiny Roaster also has a selection of black brews, ice cold brews, or white brews in its coffee studio (it only serves coffee, there is no food on the menu).

The Tiny Roaster is a welcome addition for folks who are staying in the West of Singapore. We will definitely be dropping by regularly when we need our caffeine fix.

For those who frequent Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodles, you might have noticed Tolido’s Espresso Nook – a casual and laid-back cafe that serves coffee and simple comfort food like pastas, sandwiches and all-day breakfast.

The menu is nothing fanciful and nothing exorbitant. You have some sandwiches and toasts options, as with a selection of iced beverages and coffees. But local favourites are mainstays, and you can always come in for a bowl of curry chicken rice (S$6.50) or kaya toast.

Now, the kaya toast (S$3). It wouldn’t be anything you’d expect from your regular haunts like Yakun and Toast Box. The tastemakers behind The Tastemaker Store present their version ala an English muffin style, with slightly toasted bread with sweet coconut jam and a slab of wonderful clotted cream. Very photogenic, and it tastes as good as it looks. Or you can go for the signature Lemon curd toast (S$3). Something citrusy for summer sounds perfect. Both come in a set (S$5.80) which include two soft boiled eggs and coffee/tea.

We tried the sandwiches (S$5.80) too, but they were mediocre. Pick the old school yam cake (S$3.80) instead. If you need a slice of cake, the rose flavoured one is pretty decent, though we’d wish for it to be a tad more moist. The coffee was not the best we have had too, but having a cuppa while unwinding in the cosy space is not so bad after all.

Neighbourhood cafes – when done up well – can truly be characteristic. We love the rustic simplicity of The Tastemaker Store, but they need to work on improving the food and coffee standards.

One of the newer additions to the cafe scene is Maple & Market Bakery Cafe at Cassia Crescent, just a few blocks behind Old Airport Road Food Market. Greeted by the smell of freshly baked cakes and the aroma of coffee brewing upon stepping in to the small space, it had us at hello.

The cafe has a great eye for detail. From the cake display, the interior decor, the availability of good magazines, and the fancy merchandise – Maple & Market has nailed it. The dessert table is gorgeous and has such an enticing set up that it will make you want to order everything.

Dessert options include Cinnamon cake with bacon cooked in maple syrup, Victorian Sponge Cake, Carrot Cake, and Chocolate Cake. Most of the cakes are on rotation, and only the two signature creations - Blossom, rose cake with raspberry cream cheese; and 1919, gula melaka cake with kaya cream cheese, are mainstays on the menu.

Besides the rustic and homemade cakes, Maple & Market does excellent waffles. Either go for the classic option of waffles with ice cream (S$8.50), or have the Maple Bacon Waffles (S$14). The waffle is quite like no other; it brings as much satisfaction – if not more – as flowers bring to bees.

Good coffee, delicious waffles, lovely cakes, gorgeous displays – this charming cafe fully utilised the small space and ticked all the right boxes.

We recently checked out Assembly Coffee, a 3-month old cafe located at Evans Lodge where you can also find Mr Prata and Hatched. The coffee is excellent, the food offerings are simple and easy on the pocket, and the space is small, but buzzing with energy.

Assembly Coffee prides itself as part of the third wave coffee movement. Every cup of coffee is brewed and created with dedication. It is not by chance that the latte art is pretty, and if you look across all the tables, you would realise the consistency and effort behind every cuppa.

The food menu is concise. There are sandwiches such as Egg Mayo (S$11.90), Scrambled Eggs Croissant (S$13.90) and Pulled Pork Sandwich (S$14.90); as well as light bites like Smoked Salmon Salad (S$12.90) and Chicken Pie (S$9.50).

If waffle is your thing, the Salted Caramel waffle (S$11.50) will have you dancing for joy. It impresses with its crisp edges and when paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it makes a good dessert after a meal, or simply an ideal afternoon snack along with a cup of cappuccino. The other option is a Chocolate & Strawberries Waffle (S$11.50).

Among the numerous new cafes in Singapore, Assembly Cafe stands out for its commitment towards serving good coffee and simple comfort food. The cafe is already getting popular, and it can be quite difficult to get a table during the weekends. If you pass by the area during a weekday afternoon, we highly recommend dropping by for a cup of coffee.

It took us a while to visit The Bravery Cafe because we have heard mixed reviews about it. Some people mentioned that the seats are uncomfortable (which is true to an extent), while others commented that there is nothing outstanding and it is just another new cafe.

However, after our first visit to this cafe in the Lavender neighbourhood, we find ourselves returning whenever we are in the vicinity and in need of a caffeine boast.

The Bravery Cafe is opened by the folks who are behind the The Plain at Craig Road, which has been widely recognised as one of the better coffee places in Singapore.

But if we had to choose, we actually preferred The Bravery Cafe to The Plain because of the vibe of the place – it feels a lot more welcoming.

Other than the slightly uncomfortable furniture, it has all the factors that we look out for in a cafe. There is free wifi for those who are working on the go. The baristas make exceptional coffee, in particular, the lavender latte (S$5.50) is something that we will order every time.

Also, the food offering – which is somewhat similar to The Plain’s menu – is uncomplicated and affordable. Start your day off with a Crostini (S$7.50), or Eggs on Toast (S$8). The Pancakes Stack (S$15) – with bananas, ricotta cheese, honey and crusted pistachio – is also noteworthy. For those who want to do some reading, there is a small selection of good magazines. Parking is not expensive and relatively easy, with ample parking lots in the area.

A lovely weekday afternoon, a quiet day to unwind and relax, a trip to W39 Bistro and Bakery in West Coast. We’ve heard a fair bit about this neighbourhood gem in the West, and a recent trip made us understand why it is well-loved for many reasons.

Stepping in to this little cafe is like stepping in to an English cottage in Summer; the aroma of freshly baked goodies perfumed the space, and the wooden furniture seemed to be dancing along with the soft whispers of the diners who were all there to escape the scorching afternoon sun and to seek solace in the cakes.

Yes, the cake. They bake a variety every day, but it is evident which is the crowd’s favourite – the Rainbow Cake. While we have had much better tasting ones, W39′s version was a pleasure to dig in to alongside our daily latte fix. The layers of colours were decadently laced with chocolate in between, and for S$19.90, you get two slices and two cuppa for a much-needed midday treat. Quite a value-for-money tea time special, and this gives us every reason to indulge in more cakes.

We opted for a second flavour – the chocolate cake. Moist, rich and sweet; good sugar for the soul, we’d say. A scoop of ice-cream would have been a perfect completion, though.

The table beside us was a family of 4, and among their orders was the Confit of Duck Leg with a fragrance so strong, we vowed to order that the next time we return. What seems to be another crowd favourite is the Wagyu Burger, that is pleasantly priced at an affordable S$20.

And while we haven’t tried, we heard they serve splendid breakfast, too!

Inspired by the city of Amsterdam, I Am… is a halal-certified cafe at Haji Lane that serves a selection of Western food like burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas. I have been to The Coffee Daily near Serangoon Garden Estate several times in the past few months. It has quite a few good things going for it: the cafe serves a pretty good cup of coffee; the staff are always friendly, genuine and welcoming; it is a cosy place with free wifi to revise for your exams, or to catch up with friends.

On the menu, they have sandwiches, waffles with ice cream, and a selection of desserts like Chocolate Lava Cake and Rainbow Cake. And I also love that they provide complimentary old-school iced gem biscuits – a small gesture that means so much. The Coffee Daily is located slightly out of the way, but it is worth a visit.
