As the season turns cooler and we prepare our precious annual leaves for the next year, many of us make it a point to visit Japan for the ever-elusive sakura blooming season.

While to us, the seas of pink is a breathtaking sight, there’s much more to the tradition of appreciating spring for the locals. Ohanami (or cherry blossom flower viewing) is one of them.

Though it seems straightforward enough to just have a picnic under the trees, there is a whole list of do’s and don’ts that you might not know about.

DAMAGE

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t damage the trees in any way at all. While it seems obvious and almost “duh”-worthy enough, it’s still important to reiterate that the trees are meant for everyone’s enjoyment. Do not hang or place any belongings on the trunks or branches, or even scratch or draw on any surface of the tree.

You’ve probably seen a few videos of terrible tourists that shake or even kick the trees and branches to create a petal shower, all for the sake of a few selfies. Some even break off branches to bring back as souvenirs.

DRINKING

With an amazing view and a generous spread of food on an easy-going afternoon, Ohanami makes for the perfect time to kick back and catch up with your friends. Chances are, you’re not the only one shares the same sentiment, as with the other hanami-goers. All it takes is for one person to have had too much to drink to ruin the atmosphere for everyone, so do control your alcohol intake.

LITTER

Japan’s clean streets are just one of the many reasons why we love them, and when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Littering is not just illegal, but downright rude as well. Most public areas in Japan don’t provide garbage bins either, so the most acceptable way to clean up is to bring the trash home to sort and recycle accordingly.

MATS

While certain popular spots such as parks might have blue tarps set up for hanami viewers, most areas don’t provide mats so it’s recommended to bring your own. A sheet or a blanket works just fine if you don’t plan on buying a picnic mat just for this.

PHOTOS

Rather than bringing home any physical souvenirs, the best memorabilia would be photos. Considering how it’s such a special event, it’s highly encouraged to take as many photos as possible. Though do keep in mind not to disturb the rest by obstructing the pathways.

PICNICS

It’s also common to see locals preparing picnic baskets just for ohanami parties. Most of them pack small bites such as karaage or sandwiches, but if you don’t have time to cook anything in advance, convenient shops are the perfect place to hit up for some last minute purchases.

RULES & REGULATIONS

Every province, town and park have their own specific set of rules and regulations to abide by. Do make it a point to research ahead, as some places might have additional clauses not present elsewhere. This is especially so if you’re planning on having a barbeque.

SPACE-HOGGING

No one likes hoggers. Sure, it’s nice to have a lot of space, but there’s a lot of people who need that space too. Take up only as much space as you need for the number of people you have with you, and though it’s alright to save a space in advance, don’t go overboard by reserving the same spot for longer than necessary.

TRANSPORT

Chances are, you’ll be travelling around by public transport. As ohanami parties can carry on into the wee hours of the night, we advise checking to see when the last train is, least of all you get stranded on the street. After all, taxis are extremely expensive, and who knows if you’ll even find one in the area.

TREE ROOTS

Perhaps one of the less obvious things to note is that Sakura tree roots are particularly fragile. While we might think it’s alright as long as we don’t pick flowers or break branches, by sitting on stepping on the roots of the tree, we damage it by giving it unnecessary pressure. Do your best to distance yourselves from the trees when enjoying the view, regardless of sitting or walking.

Hanami—the act of cherry blossom viewing—is an extremely popular activity in Japan that both locals and tourists enjoy during cherry blossom season every year. For a short week or two every year, sakura trees blossom and Japan is transformed into a visually arresting sea of pink.

Cherry blossoms usually come hand in hand with the beautiful historical sites of Japan. You can enjoy hanami at historical sites such as shrines and memorials or in one of Japan’s many parks. Take a stroll in the parks, or have a picnic under one of the many sakura trees; spring in Japan is an extremely wonderful time.

#1 FUKUOKA

Fukuoka is one of Japan’s most populated cities and a popular tourist destination in Japan. Fukuoka sits on one of the most scenic islands of Japan, Kyushu. Every year, Hanami greets Fukuoka with beautiful pink blossoms.

Best places in Fukuoka to view cherry blossoms:
1. Fukuoka Castle | Maizuru Park – Over a thousand trees line the ruins of Fukuokoa castle. This is the ideal place to go for a romantic stroll while viewing these gorgeous blossoms.
2. Uminonakamichi Seaside Park – An estimated two thousand cherry blossom trees are planted at the Uminonakamichi Seaside Park.
3. Atago Shrine – Hanami with a view. The shrine sits atop a hill overlooking Hakata Bay.

#2 FUKUSHIMA

Fukushima might not be the top destination choice for travellers when they visit Japan but Fukushima is more stunning than you know. Hot springs, volcanic landscapes, and hiking trails are aplenty.

Best places in Fukushima to view cherry blossoms:
1. Hanamiyama Park – There is probably only one spot in Fukushima worth visiting during cherry blossom and it is Hanamiyama Park. Rated as one of the best Hanami destinations in Japan, be greeted by a stunning display of trees with different hues of pale and dark pinks.

#3 HOKKAIDO

As one of Japan’s most popular islands, Hokkaido sits on the north with a cooler climate. Hokkaido is famed for the ski resorts, onsen and exceptionally fresh seafood.

Best places in Hokkaido to view cherry blossoms:
1. Maruyama Park | Hokkaido Shrine – The park is filled with endless cherry blossom trees. However, the path towards the Hokkaido Shrine in the park is probably the most scenic spot for photography and hanami for many trees line the walkway.
2. Moerenuma Park – This is not just any other park. Moerenuma Park was designed by the artist Isamu Noguchi and it is a masterpiece in its own rights. Cherry blossom trees bloom all around the park.

#4 HIROSHIMA

After the events of World War II, Hiroshima has definitely picked itself up and got back on track. Now, Hiroshima is one of the most-visited cities in all of Japan.

Best places in Hiroshima to view cherry blossoms:
1. Hiroshima Peace Park – Built in memoriam of those who passed on during the atomic bombing in the war, Hiroshima Peace Park is probably the most visited park in the prefecture. Cherry blossom trees are aplenty and they are scattered all around the park.
2. Hiroshima Castle – Japan is known for their historical castles. The castles are at their most beautiful during Hanami as the cherry blossom trees surround it.

#5 KANAZAWA

Kanazawa is the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture. It sits on Japan’s central Honshu Island. Kanazawa is best known for their arts and heritage with many art museums and regional handicrafts all around.

Best places in Kanazawa to view cherry blossoms:
1. Kenrokuen Garden – This garden is a must-visit spot if you are ever in Kanazawa. This landscape garden is popular with both tourists and locals due to the abundance of sakura trees.
2. Kanazawa Castle – When in Kanazawa, you have to see the amazing Kanazawa Castle. During cherry blossom season, the area “springs” to life.

#6 KOBE

Kobe beef is the world’s most highly-coveted beef and it hails from the Kobe region. Kobe sits on Osaka Bay and the city is the origin of one of the most ridiculously marbled beef that melts in your mouth. Besides the food, Kobe has scenic mountains that make for great photography opportunities, especially in Spring.

Best places in Kobe to view cherry blossoms:
1. Egeyama Park – With a view of the Kobe skyline, Egeyama Park is the perfect spot to have a picnic with your friends and family during the cherry blossom season.
2. Gokoku Shrine – The shrines are constructed in honour of war heroes, hence the area surrounding the shrine is very tranquil and relaxing as many head there for some peace and self-reflection. Sakura in full bloom at the shrine is a sight you do not want to miss.

#7 KYOTO

Kyoto was once the capital of Japan and is still one of the most visited cities in Japan for it is home to an abundance of classical Buddhist temples, imperial palaces, and gardens.

Best places in Kyoto to view cherry blossoms:
1. Philosopher’s Path – This is one of the best and top-rated hanami spots in all of Japan. Hundreds of trees line the path that connects Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) with the vicinity of Nanzenji.
2. Maruyama Park – This is the most popular park in Kyoto for hanami. The park sits next to the Yasaka Shrine and it is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike to enjoy the blossoming of sakura.

#8 NARA

When you think of Nara, you think of the adorable free-roaming deer in Nara Park and many historical sites. Nara was Japan’s capital in the 8th century, hence it is home to rich culture and history.

Best places in Nara to view cherry blossoms:
1. Nara Park – Of course, you have to visit the popular Nara Park. Almost two thousand trees are planted inside the park while approximately a thousand deer roam. It is a sight to behold, especially in Spring.
2. Koriyama Castle Ruins – Since Nara is known for their rich history, you must visit the Koriyama Castle Ruins too.

#9 OSAKA

Osaka brims with life and is well-known for their amazing street food, culture and most importantly, scenic locations.

Best places in Osaka to view cherry blossoms:
1. Kema Sakuranomiya Park – Only here will you find five thousand cherry blossom trees scattered around. Yes, FIVE THOUSAND! It is truly a sight to behold as there is double, if not triple the number of sakura trees than any other destination in Japan!
2. Osaka Castle – The Osaka Castle is synonymous with the city’s branding. Cherry blossom trees are scattered all around the park and the sheer beauty of pinks and whites against the magnificent castle is something you have to see to believe.

#10 TOKYO

As the capital city of Japan, Tokyo is a fast-paced city that is the perfect balance of modern and traditional. There is so much to do in Tokyo, and hanami is one of them during Spring. Our first experience with hanami was in Tokyo and the beautiful sights will forever be etched in our memories.

Best places in Tokyo to view cherry blossoms:
1. Shinjuku Gyoen – Arguably the best park in Tokyo for hanami, Shinjuku Gyoen should be on everyone’s itinerary. The huge park is filled with trees of pink and white cherry blossoms and locals enjoy a good picnic under the many cherry blossom trees.
2. Ueno Park – Ueno Park is bustling with life during Spring for it is another great spot in Tokyo for hanami. Over a thousand trees line the park and people hold “hanami parties” to celebrate this annual occasion.
3. Chidorigafushi – This is our favourite part of Tokyo during the cherry blossom season. Rent a boat and row down the river with sakura trees lining both sides. There is also a long pedestrian path with thousands of sakura trees. In other words, plenty of photo opportunities and surreal moments!

#2 HIGHFIELDS PARK / NOTTINGHAM

For those who are studying around the East Midlands of the UK and are dying for the chance to experience the cherry blossoms during springtime, you would be surprised to discover that the University of Nottingham offers amazing sights of the cherry trees that are not to be missed.

These cherry trees are planted along the Highfields Park in front of the University of Nottingham and the flowers bloom every Spring.

#3 CHAMPS DE MARS-PARIS / FRANCE

The Champs de Mars in Paris, France, is a large public greenspace in close proximity to the Eiffel Tower.

In Spring, the Champ de Mars boasts brilliant views of cherry trees blossoming against a backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, which is perfect for those who have a keen interest in photography, nature as well as historical monuments.

#4 BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDEN / NEW YORK

Although the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York is home to a number of speciality flowers and plants, the Garden hosts the Sakura Matsuri cherry blossom festival every year in late April where visitors can look forward to seeing the cherry trees in full bloom.

During the Sakura Matsuri, visitors would be enthralled by over 60 events and performances focused on both reflecting and celebrating traditional and contemporary Japanese culture.

#5 GUCUN PARK / SHANGHAI

Considered as one of Shanghai’s most gorgeous parks, the cherry trees in Gucun Park can be found in these four primary areas for viewing, namely, Suburban Forest Garden, Children’s Forest Carnival, Forest Leisure Sports Garden and the Forest Roaming Garden.

These blooms can also be found in various other areas in the park, and amount up to more than 10,000 cherry trees in total.

During their bloom, visitors are guaranteed to be entranced by the spectacular view of the flowers and the park will practically be a photography bonanza!

#6 CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL / VANCOUVER

Held this year from 30 March to 23 April 2017, the annual Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival seeks to sustain and renew Vancouver’s cherry tree heritage whilst encouraging people to celebrate and most importantly appreciate, the cultural significance behind the precious bloom.

This year, the festival has plenty of activities planned for visitors, ranging from the Sakura night on 2 April 2017 at 6.30pm at the Stanley Park Pavilion, and hands-on pre-festival workshops such as the Spring Lights Lantern Workshops held on a couple of dates in February.

Do not forget to also scrawl the Big Picnic into your calendar! The picnic will be held at 12pm to 3pm on 01 April 2017 at the Queen Elizabeth Park where participants would be picnicking and celebrating the blooms under the park’s iconic cherry blossom canopy.

#7 BOTANICAL GARDEN OF CURITIBA-CURITIBA / BRAZIL

It would be safe to say that not many would think of Brazil, as a place that would be home to the cherry blossom. However, you would find these blooms in the Botanical Garden of Curitiba-Curitiba which is located in the Jardim Botânico district in the capital of southern Brazil, Parana.

About 30 cherry trees are planted every year in July, in a path that would lead from the parking to the portal entrance of the park.

As the city is home to many Japanese immigrants since the first half of the century, cherry blossoms are not rare in Brazil and can be presently found in various parts of the city’s streets and squares.

#8 ALISHAN FOREST RECREATION AREA / TAIWAN

For those who love travel in East Asia, do consider dropping by the Alishan Forest Recreation Area which is considered one of the most scenic spots in Taiwan.

Alishan Forest boasts a collection of more than 10 types of cherry trees, including the Fuji cherry tree and Yoshino cherry tree to name a few. The forest is particularly famous for its large population of 1,900 Yoshino cherry trees, which is the largest area where these cherry trees bloom in Taiwan.

Also, the forest runs the Cherry Blossom Festival sometime in March and April when the flowers are in full bloom.

The annual Cherry Blossoms at Gardens by The Bay’s Flower Dome is back from now until 24 March 2017. This year, there will be more trees spread out around the conservatory, as well as new varieties that will be on show for the first time.

Flower Dome opens from 9am to 9pm daily, and tickets can be pre-booked online.

Tickets (for locals) to the Flower Dome are priced at S$12 for adult, and S$8 for child and senior citizen.

THE BLOOM DATES FOR CHERRY BLOSSOMS IN SEOUL

The cherry blossom trees are predicted to bloom in early April, with the peak from 09 April 2017 to 11 April 2017.

They are more short-lived than the trees in Japan (that could last up to 2 weeks), and this prediction is an average from recent year’s patterns.

#1 YEOUIDO PARK CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Yeouido Park is arguably the most popular spot for hanami in Seoul. The Yeouido Spring Flower Festival, located on the Han river, takes place annually in Spring.

There are over 1,600 trees dotting the area, and on top of taking a stroll to admire the beautiful pink canopies, you can also get your portraits drawn, and pig out over street snacks at the many street stalls.

#2 GYEONGBOKGUNG CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Gyeongbokgung is the most notable palace in Seoul, and the palace compound is dotted with sakura trees. During Spring, the palace is another type of wonderful—with a sea of pretty pink pastels against a backdrop of ancient buildings spotting strong, primary hues.

#3 CHANGGYEONGGUNG CHERRY BLOSSOMS

The lesser known palace is actually the best palace out of the five in Seoul for hanami. During the Japanese rule, the Japanese planted trees all over the palace’s compounds, and today, we reap their harvest.

#4 SEOKCHON LAKE CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Seokchon Lake is a man-made lake that sits within Lotte World amusement park, where cherry blossoms trees are aplenty. People flock to the East of Seoul for this festival, and apart from hanami, you can also enjoy a variety of performances, exhibitions and activities such as face painting.

Admission for Seokchon Lake Cherry Blossom Festival is free.

#5 SAMCHEONG-DONG CHERRY BLOSSOMS

This is one of our favourite areas in Seoul, and the mix of new and old is precisely what charmed us. Cherry blossom trees are scattered sporadically along the area, in random corners and every other street.

Look out for a huge park where hundreds of cherry blossoms trees await, and there is Jeongdok Library which sits in the heart of Samcheong-dong.

#6 NAMSAN CHERRY BLOSSOMS

A popular scenic route is Namsan (South Mountain), and you are encouraged to hop on the cable car for an obstructed view of the city and cherry blossom trees.

There are many more activities at await at Namsan; you might be familiar with the N Seoul Tower.

The Yangjae Stream in Gangnam has a 3.5m walking path and a path specially for cyclists, with sakura trees lining the sides of the pathways.

#8 KYUNGHEE UNIVERSITY CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Kyunghee University sits on the North of Seoul, but that does not deter visitors from all over to make a trip to the compound; the campus’ blooms is well worth the trip. Anyone can enter the campus, except that you need a student card to selected restricted areas such as the library.

The university is filled with various sakura trees; from white petals to pink beauties, Kyunghee University is one of the best spots in Seoul for hanami.

#9 SEOUL NATIONAL CEMETERY CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Unlike your usual parks, the Seoul National Cemetery is a sombre contrast to the jolly crowd everywhere else. As if a cemetery is not already a place filled with sorrow, the cherry blossoms trees here weeping cherry trees no less.

There is something mysterious yet alluring about the long, draping branches of pale pink flowers that makes Seoul National Cemetery an increasingly popular site for hanami.

The Fukuoka Castle is the recommended spot to view the cherry blossoms. Some other spots to admire the flowers are Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, Nishi Park and the Atago Shrine.

After the infamous and disastrous atomic bomb destroyed most of Hiroshima, a lot of effort was put into rebuilding the city to what it is today.

You can visit the Peace Park, then head down to Shukkeien Garden and the Hiroshima Castle. These places and sites are surrounded by cherry blossom trees and are very popular for hanami.

#4 HOKKAIDO

Cherry blossoms period: 29 April 2017 to 5 May 2017

Hokkaido is the largest prefecture of Japan. And it is huge, with plenty of cherry blossoms trees all around.

The one place you must go to is Hakodate’s Goryokaku, a star-shaped fort with its grounds entirely filled with hanami spots. And there is Matsumae Castle, the only castle in Hokkaido but it is stunning in Spring with all the sakura.

#5 KYOTO

Cherry blossoms period: 29 March 2017 to 12 April 2017

Kyoto is a place to explore all the historical and cultural wonders of Japan, and cherry blossom trees are almost all over the ancient capital. It is one of the best Japanese destinations for hanami.

Maruyama-koen is undoubtly the most popular spot, followed by Kyoto Gosho (Imperial Palace Park). Shirakawa (the most popular street in Gion) is always stunning too with its lines of cherry blossoms trees.

#6 NAGOYA

Cherry blossoms period: 26 March 2017 to 10 April 2017

Nagoya is Japan’s fourth most populated city and a place where culture fuses with art.

The world flocks to Yamazakigawa Riverside, where these cherry blossoms bloom stunningly on both sides of the river. But of course, the blooms at Nagoya Castle is one sight to behold too. Tsuruma Park is also Nagoya’s best city park for hanami.

#7 NARA

Cherry blossoms period: 28 March 2017 to 11 April 2017

As one of the most popular tourist spots in Japan, Nara is located just an hour away from the city of Osaka and Kyoto.

Nara Park may be famous for their deer, but it is also home to about 1700 cherry blossom trees all around and is Nara’s best sakura viewing spot. To catch a more historical and scenic view, head down to the Heijo Palace, where it is surrounded by more sakura trees.

#8 TOKYO

Cherry blossoms period: 26 March 2017 to 11 April 2017

Tokyo, oh Tokyo; our favourite Japanese city. There are endless things to do her—shop until you drop, eat to your heart’s content and sip coffee all day every day.

And in April, weeping sakura fill the city with an irresistible charm, and it was one of the best things we had ever experienced. All your hanami dreams will come true at Shinjuku Gyoen, Yoyogi Park, Meguro River, Ueno Park and Aoyama Cemetry.

#9 OKINAWA

Cherry blossoms period: Mid January to Week 2 of February

Okinawa is an island located in the Southernmost part of Japan. It has a generally more tropical climate due to its geographical position.

The Hanami period starts the earliest here before it moves up north. And its cherry blososm trees are quite unlike what you’d expect—not the pale pink flowers, but brighter, rounder blossoms called Hikan-Zakura (which grows best in warm, humid climate). View these breathtaking flowers at Nago Chuo Park, Nakijin Castle or Yogi Park.

The Kitchen of Japan, Osaka, is one city that we are all familiar with, yes?

The iconic Osaka Castle is arguably the best spot for hanami in early April. You can also head to Kema Sakuranomiya Park, where nearly 5000 cherry blossom trees line the Okawa River, spanning a length of a few kilometres.How about a picnic under the sakura trees?

How about a picnic under the sakura trees? Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park is a large public park that once served as a flower exhibition in 1990, and today, the park has hundreds of sakura trees planted all over.

Note: The above dates are an approximation based on the past five years’ cherry blossoms periods. It is hard to predict the exact days as weather forecasts are ever-changing. It is, however, important to book your air tickets and accommodation months in advance to avoid exorbitant peak period prices, and to secure your necessary rooms and hotel stays.

Cherry Blossoms in Singapore is no longer just a fantasy. From now until 27 March 2016 from 9am to 9pm daily, the Flower Dome at Gardens by The Bay will showcase these pretty sakura or Japanese cherry blossoms, with more than 20 varieties on display.

As of Monday 14 March 2016, most of these cherry blossoms are already in full bloom and if you are planning a visit down, it is a great time now.

This has been dubbed as an ‘experimental floral display’ and the main aim is to showcase flowers that are not usually seen or found in Singapore. The display is aptly named ‘Blossom Beats’ and is styled as a traditional Japanese garden with different coloured cherry blossoms – from pure white to different shades of pink.

We made our way down to Gardens By The Bay to experience the magic of these ethereal Japanese sakuras and enjoy them in full bloom.

The main central area of the Flower Dome is designed like a Japanese garden with kimonos and other Japanese decor and elements all around. You would have to queue to get into the main area to look at the cherry blossoms up close.

The place was generally pretty packed even on a weekday afternoon, so be prepared for even longer queues on weekends and peak hours.

While not all of the cherry blossoms are in full bloom right now, most already are and they are mainly the Prunus Yedoenis Yoshino which stands out with its stark striking white flowers. The paler pink flowers are of the Prunus Accolade variety.

We were most enchanted by the deeper pink and red flowers and they were so stunning up close.

The great thing about the Flower Dome is that it is air-conditioned, so you can enjoy hanami in comfort.

The display ends on 27 March 2016.

#6 SEOUL

#7 WASHINGTON DC

From March to April, you can admire cherry blossoms in full bloom at Tidal Basin’s Northern Bank or at the grounds of the Washington Monument. These sakura trees were actually planted in 1912, where the Japanese sent thousands of cherry trees to the United States as a gift.
