Sitting along the old-fashioned shophouses that line North Bridge Road is The Dim Sum Place. You won’t be able to miss it because it has this eye-catching bright orange awning.

This place doles out good Cantonese dim sum with a creative local twist that will allow you to sample a unique mix of flavours in a single meal setting.

The best part? It is halal-certified so our Muslim friends can enjoy the dim sum, too!

From the outside, this halal-certified eatery does not appear big enough to accommodate large crowds. But step in and you will realise how spacious the restaurant is.

We opted for a mixture of classic dim sum choices as well as some unique creations that are not commonly seen.

For starters, we attempted the Chicken Siew Mai (S$3.90/3 pcs) and Pan Fried Taro Cake (S$2.90/3pcs). The plating of the dishes was done really nicely. The Chicken Siew Mai was tasty and the sweet chilli dip that went along added a nice punch to the medley of flavours.

The Pan Fried Taro Cake arrived a tad dry but the chilli sauce made it better.

The next two dishes got us super excited—namely the Vermicelli Roll With Beef Rendang (S$8.90) and the Vermicelli Roll With Shrimp & Spring Onion (S$7.90). These essentially act as a modern representation of the typical Chee Cheong Fun.

The Beef Rendang was tender and the spices really shone through the dish. The Shrimp option was superb and the special light sauce paired well with the crystal-like skin of the rolls.

We also tried the Congee with Shredded Chicken (S$6.90). Albeit its simple presentation, the stock of the porridge was the main star. Scoop up the warm congee and top it off with the shredded chicken. You will find this dish highly comforting.

The Molten Salted Egg Pandan Buns (S$4.90) and TDSP Cheese Tarts (S4.90/2pcs) were just what we needed to end the meal on a sweet note. The pandan buns did not have molten salted egg oozing out like how we’d like it, though.

Don Meijin is a new donburi eatery at Ramen Champion Bugis+ that has been making waves on social media. You can find quite a range of donburi including Jumbo Chicken Katsu Don (S$13.80), Unagi Don (S$18.80), as well as the signature Spicy Chilli Crab Tendon (S$14.80)—a unique combination of chilli crab sauce over crispy tempura.

Priced affordably at S$14.80, the Spicy Chilli Crab Tendon is served in a unique presentation of two delicate Japanese-inspired bowls. One of them serves as the backing for the generous portions of freshly fried tempura—which includes prawns, asparagus, pumpkin, salmon, kakiage and eggplant.

The tempura prawn was fried to perfection; the batter was flavourful and crispy, and the meat was soft and tender.

Unlike Singapore’s chilli crab sauce, Don Meijin’s chilli crab sauce was considerably spicier which gave the don a great kick of flavour. The sauce was also filled with plenty of snow crab meat and egg, with a slight hint of tomato sauce.

We only wished that there was more of this intense, tangy sauce to go with the large portion of rice served beneath the tempura.

Diners also have the option of ordering the Ochazuke Set (S$2)—a set with rice crisps, wasabi and dashi soup; or the Kansai Fu Mini Udon Set (S$3) to complete their dining experience.

With fantastic ambience, polite staff and efficient service, Don Meijin is great for those who are looking for a quick and delicious meal, and for parties who wish to enjoy their meal at their own time and pace.

Most of the dishes are priced below S$16.90 and there is no GST and service charge.

From their signature spicy Tom Yum Seafood Pasta (S$14.90) to Cheesy Chicken Chop (S$16.90), 49 Seats may not be any gourmet fine dining establishment but its menu will leave you salivating. Your grandparents will find them comfortingly nostalgic whilst your kids will have no qualms gobbling them up. It is surely a place for everyone, without breaking the bank!

Here’s sharing our favourite dishes at 49 Seats. It is hard to just decide on one, or two.

49 Seats is renowned for their industrial chic ambience, where old-school metallic plates and tin mugs are used. We love that fuss-free, retro-ish touch to the food.

As its name suggests, the founding store at Outram Park sits exactly 49 diners. Due to its increasing popularity, 49 Seats has proceeded to open two bigger outlets at Bugis Plus and Orchard Central to accommodate more patrons. The casual dining establishment takes pride in serving East-meets-West delicacies similar to those served during Singapore’s British colonial era.

Being one of the leading pioneers in Singapore to create fusion dishes with spicy tom yum broth, we have to applaud 49 Seats for their brilliant concept of integrating Asian flavours into classic Italian dishes.

Who would have known that these seemingly contrasting ingredients would actually complement each other so well? We were completely hooked to the Tom Yum Seafood Pasta (S$14.90).

Active foodies on the prowl might have already heard about this highly raved dish that features an exotic cream-based seafood pasta. It packs a punch of sweetness, sourness and spiciness with every bite and is indeed illustrative of Singapore’s diverse ethnicity.

Topped with generous amounts of mussels and prawns, the semi-spicy pasta is the bestseller at 49 Seats and you will not get this unique pasta rendition elsewhere.

The Creamy Smoked Duck Pasta (S$14.90) and Smoked Duck Aglio Olio (S$14.90) also got to us with its simplicity. The smoked duck breasts are so tender and juicy, and either way, we liked both pastas. The former takes on the classic carbonara, while the latter is a traditional aglio olio – the end results are delightful fusion dishes with a notable local twist.

Do note that the Smoked Duck Aglio Olio is not on the menu so one would have to make a special request for it.

Fish options to look out for are the Old Fashioned Fish & Chips (S$16.90) and Pan-fried Fish (S$16.90). The former is a battered seasonal fish, while the latter is a tender dory cooked simply with salt and pepper and lemon juice.

Both fishy mains are generously portioned and served with either an Al Scampi or Tom Yum sauce on the side for dipping. For the uninitiated, the Al Scampi is a seafood dish prepared with sautéed clams, mussels and prawns.

If your briny cravings are still not met, order the deep-fried Fish Bites (S$9.90) that comes in a basket of 10. Damn, these snacks got us hooked and we couldn’t stop munching on them while waiting for our mains! By the way, you would have guessed that the Tom Yum sauce is addictive, right?

49 Seats also offer a few poultry and red meat dishes, such as the chef’s recommendations of Cheesy Chicken Chop (S$16.90) and Sirloin Steak (S$19.90).

Complete your main and make it a set with an additional S$4.90, and you get a portion of soup of the day, and a soft drink of your choice. And the drink choices include their pretty house fizz beverages (S$2.50 for a la carte); we’d say go for these instead of the normal soft drinks!

Should you be a light eater, there is a variety of light bites for you to snack on. Our favourite appetisers is the glorious Cheese Fries (S$7.90).

Need another reason to love 49 Seats? They are open at ungodly hours if you need supper! Ain’t this good news?! There is an ongoing supper promotion for all main courses where 49 Seats’ customers get to enjoy 10% off after 10pm, 20% off after 11pm and 30% off after 12am. Like it cannot get cheaper, nocturnal creatures actually get to enjoy an unbelievable 50% off all pastas after 3am! Partygoers now know where to go after all that dancing.

French restaurants are aplenty in Singapore, it is not difficult to find good French food here. But if you are on a hunt for a pocket-friendly option, the options become considerately limited. So I was quite excited to hear about Poulet, a casual French restaurant, by the Thai Express group, at the new Bugis+ (previously Illuma) which specialises in poulet rôti (roast chicken).

On Poulet’s menu, you can find appetisers ($5.80 to $9.80) like escargot, saute wild mushroom and French onion soup; main courses ($8.80 to $15.80) like Iberico pork belly, Smith chicken and egg mayo sandwich, and braise de poulet; and desserts ($6.80 to $7.80) such as banana bread pudding, tiramisu and caramelised apple in puffy tart.

We started with a salad de Paris ($9.80), a simple garden salad with tomato, avocado and roasted pine nut with French dressing. Next up was half a dozen of escargot ($8.80) with tomato fondue and garlic butter. Both appetisers were okay, but nothing to shout about.

After which, we shared three main courses. The beef ($15.80) in red wine sauce with carrot and onion arrived first. For the price, we thought that it was very decent.

Flavour-wise, the braise de canard ($15.80) in sweet wine sauce was good, but texture-wise, it was way too dense for our liking.

The star of the show, something that you must order at Poulet, is the poulet roti ($15.80 for half, $28.80 for whole). I’d come back just to eat the chicken.

We agreed that the main courses were competent. Our only grouse is that they could do with some starch given that the portions are pretty small.

From the dessert menu, we ordered a banana bread pudding ($6.80) and apple tart ($7.80). The banana and warm bread pudding served with vanilla ice cream was run-of-the-mill. Luckily, the baked caramelised Granny Smith apple in puffy tart was good, and we ended our meal on a sweet note.

All in all, Poulet is a casual dining place that serves affordable and decent French fare. The food is acceptable; and at these prices, there is little to fault.
