We’ve always griped about the fact that cafes are all about unhealthy food that are packed with sins, and all that talk about balanced diets almost does not exist. Most of the time, all we get is some sad-looking arugula on the side that honestly looks less appetising than grass, and we have reached the point of giving up on having our dose of fibre at cafes.

Then, Fresh Fruits Lab (FFL) at Changi Road came along, and we found hope all over again. This cafe is all about inculcating fresh fruits into their food and drinks! Well, as its name suggests, it prides itself as a heaven for all fruits lovers.

The whole space is fully utilised, with colours everywhere, and very artistic. Quirky displays fill the cafe, and we love how it feels like a hippy laboratory with the many apparatus on display. Even the drinks are served in test tubes and conical flasks!

Now, let’s begin with the drinks menu. We are such fans of coffee, but who needs coffee when we have cold-pressed fruit juices at FFL? Pick from a variety of single fruits or combos; we love the Fruits Beats (S$8). If you prefer tea, try Tokio (S$5) – berry flavoured green tea with flower petals. Non-caffeinated options also include the Lychee Barley (S$5) – six-rowed barley flavoured with lychee – and Sakurambo (S$5) – black tea flavoured with Japanese cherries. Yes, they all sound so pretty.

Over on the food menu, we fell head over heels in love with the Fish & Chips (S$19). It sounds plain and boring, but FFL’s version is definitely not as predictable. Beer battered pacific dory fried to a golden perfection, and the end result is skin so crispy, with beautiful sweet white flesh on the inside. The serving is very generous, and it comes complete with steakhouse frittes and homemade tartare.

Cafes are usually not known for their steaks, but FFL’s Angus Scotch Fillet (S$39) is a chef’s recommendation and it is worth a try. For the price, you get a huge 300g NZ angus ribeye with a choice of mushroom sauce or red wine jus – with shoe string fries and mesclun salad that comes with lots of fruits, too. We observed and realised that this is a surprisingly popular item during lunch hours!

Then, there is the Da Bomb Burger (S$19). We suppose the name sums it all. A juicy 250g beef patty with crispy bacon, sunny side-up and melted cheese, the burger is tall and handsome. And we love how the burger comes with not only fries, but a generous serving of fruit salad too. The colourful addition instantly prettifies the dish!

Need to load up on your carbs? Look to the pasta section. The Carbonara (S$18) is a classic choice that is always good, but the chef highly recommends the Masago Caviar Pasta that comes with baked half shell scallop topped with fresh quail egg and caviar masago

And we are on to the sweets now. The spotlight has got to be on its homemade Rainbow Cake (S$7). Light and soft, the FFL’s version is listed in our Guide to Singapore’s Best Rainbow Cakes. Very Instagram-worthy without a doubt, too. Fans of tropical fruits will also love their Lychee Cake (S$6.50) that is baked in-house too.

On weekends, expect a hearty brunch menu that includes everyone’s favourite Eggs Benedict (S$13), Frittata (S$15) and Bananalicious Pancakes (S$11).

During lunch hours on weekdays (11am to 2:30pm), FFL offers a value-for-money lunch menu at S$12+. You get a soup and a choice of one out of three main courses. The options vary daily, but if you do see the Grilled Pangasius Filler with Pumpkin Quinoa and Spicy Fish Sauce, go for it.

Indeed, there are so many reasons to love FFL. The East of Singapore has no lack of cafes, but FFL stands out for its unique concept and consistent well-executed food. There are ample parking lots along that street, and if you are going via public transport, it sits along by the main road, so there is no need to walk a mile to get there.

These days, we don’t need to travel out of our neighbourhood to get good food and desserts. Cafes are spouting out everywhere, and we are definitely not complaining. We have cafes at every district in Singapore, and no one gets left out.

The West of Singapore may not be a favourite part if you do not reside there, for it is pretty far out from the main areas and can indeed get a little out of the way. But because we are such fans of artisan places and cosy spaces, we would travel just for a slice of rainbow cake or a good cuppa, yes?

Rangoon Road is one of those areas that we’d love to think of as the “last frontiers of Singapore”. In our memories, we grew up knowing Rangoon Road as one laid back neighbourhood scattered with coffee shops, little eateries and workshops. When one thinks of Rangoon Road, Ng Ah Sio and Founders Bak Kut Teh come to mind.

Jewel Coffee’s second outlet at Rangoon Road is much spacious than its original coffee shop in Shenton Way. Well-loved by the executives and expats – its first wave of supporters – Jewel sees a younger and hippy crowd at its two-story space at Rangoon Road. Still serving quality brew that is consistent and always pleasing, Jewel Cafe & Bar is a marvellous option to head to when you need a good cuppa.

They have a pretty decent food menu too, and though prices are slightly steep, we really enjoyed the ricotta pancakes we had.

#3 L’ETOILE CAFE

Established in July 2014, Old Hen Coffee Bar is a relatively newcomer in the local café scene. Unlike most of the new cafes that are more hype than substance, P Bistro at Owen Road – just down the road from L’Etoile Cafe – is a refreshing addition to the local dining scene. The Chocolate Root Beer Waffle (S$12.50) is out of this world. Although chocolate in the batter made the waffle slightly cake-ier in texture, we liked that the waffle still stayed crisp throughout and the added chocolate chip cookie, charcoal vanilla soft-serve and the homemade root beer sauce all came together perfectly.

Few things are more therapeutic than enjoying some alone time and have coffee while reading a book on a quiet afternoon. One of the cafes in the Tanjong Pagar neighbourhood that we go to regularly is Drury Lane.

With a name like Drury Lane and a London-esque shopfront, we thought that the cafe was named after the street in Covent Garden, London. But to our surprise, we found out from a recent chat with one of the staff that the name was actually inspired by the lyrics from a nursery rhyme, The Muffin Man. How cute.

We have had the coffee at Drury Lane on many occasions and it is always consistent and reliable, especially when we need a pick-me-up after back to back meetings. The baked goods are also worth a try. With several desserts like nutella chocolate tart, carrot cake, and salted caramel tart on rotation, you will be spoiled silly at Drury Lane. We love the Candy Bar Pie (S$5) – which is listed in our guide to Singapore’s 50 must-try desserts – it is more like a tart made of salted caramel, peanut butter nougat, with a chocolate glaze.

Drury Lane also has several muffins – matcha, peanut butter, banana & walnut. What makes the muffins special is that you can pay-as-you-wish. Get your coffee fix here and grab a muffin or two.

Brunch specials change from every week. On some weekends, you can find a Zucchini Pancake with slow roasted tomato jam and topped with a poached egg or a Mexican Breakfast with multigrain tortilla, while on other occasions, there are options like Grilled Beef Eggs Benedict and Beef Sausage with Brown Butter Scrambled Eggs. Brunch at Drury Lane is something that you can look forward to.

The Upper Thomson neighbourhood is experiencing a revival, with new cafes like November 8 and One Man Coffee opening in the area. Among them, you should swing by One Man Coffee for great coffee and delicious light bites like its ‘Toad in the Hole’ and the much-lauded French toast.

One Man Coffee shares the premise with Crust Pizza; the former opens from 9am to 5pm, while the latter starts from 5pm onwards. It is easy to miss One Man Coffee from the main road if you are not paying attention, so keep an eye out for Crust Pizza’s signage.

The cafe uses coffee beans from The Axil Coffee Roasters, one of the more popular coffee joints in Melbourne. One Man Coffee may not be the most fanciful cafe, but it has good coffee and inexpensive brunch food – definitely worth a visit if you always frequent the Upper Thomson area.

The cafe scene in Singapore is thriving with many new cafes opening every month. However, there are many places that do not last long because they lack real substance to build a following. Oftentimes, new cafes are more style than substance, and serves mediocre food with lacklustre service.

Habitat Coffee at Upper Thomson Road deserves a mention for the great work that it has been doing. The bistro has been around for a few years, and despite the tough competition, it shines and remains a favourite for many. Habitat Coffee is worth visiting because it serves good coffee and well-cooked dishes at sensible prices.

The menu has a nice mix of sandwiches (S$9), brunch food (S$10 – S$15), pasta (S$12 – S$17), and desserts (S$5 – S$12). Noteworthy dishes include the Truffle Al Funghi (S$17), a creamy truffle mushroom pasta with baby spinach; the super addictive Truffle Fries (S$8); and house-made Churros (S$9) served with warm chocolate ganache.

For brunch, we highly recommend the hearty and satisfying Eggs Tomato Relish (S$15) – two eggs, bacon, and baby spinach cooked in a tomato sauce. Amazingly simple, but absolutely delicious and very hearty.

It is heartening to see that Habitat Coffee is sticking to the basics and focusing on serving simple comfort food well. It is a laidback spot where you can go back regularly with your family and friends.

We recently checked out Assembly Coffee, a 3-month old cafe located at Evans Lodge where you can also find Mr Prata and Hatched. The coffee is excellent, the food offerings are simple and easy on the pocket, and the space is small, but buzzing with energy.

Assembly Coffee prides itself as part of the third wave coffee movement. Every cup of coffee is brewed and created with dedication. It is not by chance that the latte art is pretty, and if you look across all the tables, you would realise the consistency and effort behind every cuppa.

The food menu is concise. There are sandwiches such as Egg Mayo (S$11.90), Scrambled Eggs Croissant (S$13.90) and Pulled Pork Sandwich (S$14.90); as well as light bites like Smoked Salmon Salad (S$12.90) and Chicken Pie (S$9.50).

If waffle is your thing, the Salted Caramel waffle (S$11.50) will have you dancing for joy. It impresses with its crisp edges and when paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it makes a good dessert after a meal, or simply an ideal afternoon snack along with a cup of cappuccino. The other option is a Chocolate & Strawberries Waffle (S$11.50).

Among the numerous new cafes in Singapore, Assembly Cafe stands out for its commitment towards serving good coffee and simple comfort food. The cafe is already getting popular, and it can be quite difficult to get a table during the weekends. If you pass by the area during a weekday afternoon, we highly recommend dropping by for a cup of coffee.

It took us a while to visit The Bravery Cafe because we have heard mixed reviews about it. Some people mentioned that the seats are uncomfortable (which is true to an extent), while others commented that there is nothing outstanding and it is just another new cafe.

However, after our first visit to this cafe in the Lavender neighbourhood, we find ourselves returning whenever we are in the vicinity and in need of a caffeine boast.

The Bravery Cafe is opened by the folks who are behind the The Plain at Craig Road, which has been widely recognised as one of the better coffee places in Singapore.

But if we had to choose, we actually preferred The Bravery Cafe to The Plain because of the vibe of the place – it feels a lot more welcoming.

Other than the slightly uncomfortable furniture, it has all the factors that we look out for in a cafe. There is free wifi for those who are working on the go. The baristas make exceptional coffee, in particular, the lavender latte (S$5.50) is something that we will order every time.

Also, the food offering – which is somewhat similar to The Plain’s menu – is uncomplicated and affordable. Start your day off with a Crostini (S$7.50), or Eggs on Toast (S$8). The Pancakes Stack (S$15) – with bananas, ricotta cheese, honey and crusted pistachio – is also noteworthy. For those who want to do some reading, there is a small selection of good magazines. Parking is not expensive and relatively easy, with ample parking lots in the area.

Our little island is increasingly dotted with little gems and hideouts, and while we love that there are more options for our cafe-hopping adventures, it is with much regret that most of these places are mediocre and substantially empty in many terms.

For people who work on-the-go like us, having a strong wifi signal and fast connection is definitely top of our list when we are looking for new cafes to visit, and cafes to pledge our loyalty to. Providing reliable wifi may mean a smaller turnover, but when people stay longer, it means a bigger check per table.

Good coffee

With the crowd in recent context becoming more particular about the beans that make their drinks, coffee appreciation is at a new high and gone are the days when cafes can just make do with instant mixes or a lousy machine that produces an even lousier brew. Serve good coffee and you are on your way to seal loyalty. Oh, latte art is optional but very much encouraged.

Affordable comfort food

Cafes are meant to be casual, the kind of place that you can go to with a bunch of friends, or to simply enjoy some me-time. No one is expecting Michelin-star standards, but what people really want is a place that they can go back regularly for a good meal and comforting tastes that they are familiar with – without breaking the bank, of course.

Any cafe that has an array of good magazines instantly get an additional 10 points from us. As with many others who hideaway at cafes to relax and recharge, or to gain inspiration.

Comfortable furniture

This may sound like a no-brainer, but there are some cafes that deliberately choose furniture that are uncomfortable so that customers will not hog the seats. Granted, we do understand that ultimately cafes are but restaurants running a business on a smaller scale, and they need to turnover tables. But in the long run, people will only return to cafes that they feel comfortable at.

A great environment

Research has shown that having the right mix of calm and commotion in an environment can boost creativity. Sometimes, we go to cafes to get work done or to study. Other times, we head to cafes to meet people or to brainstorm for ideas.

The reason why Starbucks is so popular is because it is not just a place for coffee, but also plays the role of “Third Place” – a comfortable, sociable gathering spot away from home and work.

It is the combination of the various factors – good coffee, nice music, comfortable setting, and comfort food – that contribute to a great environment.

A lovely weekday afternoon, a quiet day to unwind and relax, a trip to W39 Bistro and Bakery in West Coast. We’ve heard a fair bit about this neighbourhood gem in the West, and a recent trip made us understand why it is well-loved for many reasons.

Stepping in to this little cafe is like stepping in to an English cottage in Summer; the aroma of freshly baked goodies perfumed the space, and the wooden furniture seemed to be dancing along with the soft whispers of the diners who were all there to escape the scorching afternoon sun and to seek solace in the cakes.

Yes, the cake. They bake a variety every day, but it is evident which is the crowd’s favourite – the Rainbow Cake. While we have had much better tasting ones, W39′s version was a pleasure to dig in to alongside our daily latte fix. The layers of colours were decadently laced with chocolate in between, and for S$19.90, you get two slices and two cuppa for a much-needed midday treat. Quite a value-for-money tea time special, and this gives us every reason to indulge in more cakes.

We opted for a second flavour – the chocolate cake. Moist, rich and sweet; good sugar for the soul, we’d say. A scoop of ice-cream would have been a perfect completion, though.

The table beside us was a family of 4, and among their orders was the Confit of Duck Leg with a fragrance so strong, we vowed to order that the next time we return. What seems to be another crowd favourite is the Wagyu Burger, that is pleasantly priced at an affordable S$20.

And while we haven’t tried, we heard they serve splendid breakfast, too!

I have been to The Coffee Daily near Serangoon Garden Estate several times in the past few months. It has quite a few good things going for it: the cafe serves a pretty good cup of coffee; the staff are always friendly, genuine and welcoming; it is a cosy place with free wifi to revise for your exams, or to catch up with friends.

On the menu, they have sandwiches, waffles with ice cream, and a selection of desserts like Chocolate Lava Cake and Rainbow Cake. And I also love that they provide complimentary old-school iced gem biscuits – a small gesture that means so much. The Coffee Daily is located slightly out of the way, but it is worth a visit.
