Although it is the third largest city in Taiwan, Taichung is more often than not overshadowed by bustling Taipei and many travellers tend to have this misconception that there is nothing much to do in Taichung.

Taichung is a gateway to many hidden gems and nature attractions which are perfect for day trips. And yes, you will find out that there is more to Taiwan than night markets and cheap shopping.

Here are 8 Best Day Trips From Taichung You Must Visit.

#1 ZHONGSHE TOURSIGHT FLOWER MARKET

It takes less than an hour’s drive from Taichung city to reach Zhongshe Toursight Flower Market which is set in Houli town. Known for its bright and colourful flowers that change according to the season, this market spans across 6 hectares of land in total.

Wander around the beautiful garden and watch the flowers sway as if they are dancing in the wind. Look out for the Dutch-style windmill and a white wooden piano sitting in a field of purple lavender flowers—they make great backdrops for your pictures!

No. 469-13, Sanfeng Rd
Houli District, Taichung City

#2 LAVENDER COTTAGE

Nestled on the top of a mountain, the air is cool and crisp at Lavender Cottage. As you may have inferred from its name, this place is where you can find anything and everything lavender. From lavender flowers to lavender tea, lavender handmade products and even lavender ice cream!

When you arrive at the entrance, walk up and push a button to take a “lavender shower” which is essentially lavender mist for guests to spray on themselves. Take photographs with a magnificent carousel, hang your written wishes on wooden branches and mail postcards out.

#3 XIN SHE CASTLE

One of the most popular tourist attractions, Xin She Castle is a replica of old European style castles set among the high mountains of Taichung. Complete with a lake, manmade waterfall and large garden, it is not difficult to imagine why locals and tourists make Xin She Castle their choice destination for photo shoots.

Those who are visiting Lavender Cottage can drop by Xin She Castle afterward as the two places are only 30 minutes away from each other by car.

#4 921 EARTHQUAKE MUSEUM OF TAIWAN

Paying tribute to the victims of one of the worst earthquake incidents that occurred in Taiwan and for educational purposes, the Taiwanese government decided to preserve a school building that has been wrecked during the natural disaster.

921 Earthquake Museum is truly worth a visit as it serves as a reminder that it is always important to keep vigilant and be prepared for future disasters. This national museum will be an eye opener for those who are curious about the aftereffects of an earthquake. Do not skip past the earthquake simulation room!

#5 SUN MOON LAKE

The most affordable way to Sun Moon Lake is to take a coach from Taichung Train Station. Although the journey takes more than an hour, you will be blown away by how picturesque the place is. Nature lovers will delight in the clean air and turquoise coloured lake water.

It has been said that Sun Moon Lake derived its name from its geographical shape where the east side of the lake appears to be round like the sun while the western part of the lake is long and narrow like the moon. Take a boat tour to Shuishe, Ita Thao, and Syuanguang Piers and have fun exploring or trying out local snacks before making your way back.

If you don’t mind a little mud, why not head to Gaomei Wetlands? Many people like to catch sunsets there as there are no tall structures obstructing your view.

During low tide, you are likely to catch sightings of mud skippers, fiddler crabs and also different bird species. Otherwise, kick off your shoes and play in the mud with your travel companions!

Fill your stomach with the freshest seafood catch of the day or watch the fishermen unload the day’s haul directly from the fishing boats.

There are 10 trails with various difficulty levels catering to beginners and experts. Be mindful that trails six to 10 are the most popular ones, so you have to arrive earlier to beat the crowd during weekends and holidays.

Japan is definitely a country you cannot visit just once.

The different prefectures each carry its own individual charm. You can choose to experience how the modern city life is like, or let the old-world architecture of other cities take you back in time.

It is quite impossible to cover every inch of Japan with just one trip, but you can get the most out of your stay by going for short, eye-opening day trips to other towns and cities located within reasonable distances from Tokyo.

Here are 6 Of The Best Daytrips From Tokyo.

#1 HAKONE, KANAGAWA

Hakone in Kanagawa is reasonably near Tokyo, and is about an hour and a half away from Tokyo. You can easily catch a train down the Odakyu line to Hakone-Yumoto station. You will be greeted with a magnificent sight of Mount Fuji, coupled with a number of other attractions around the area.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Hakone is, in fact, one of the best places in Japan to catch the sakura blooms around spring time. Besides admiring cherry blossoms, you can also visit the numerous hot springs around Hakone, and try some unique black volcanic eggs that can only be found in the town.

There is also the iconic shrine that is everyone’s favourite photo spot.

#2 KAMAKURA, KANAGAWA

Kamakura, like Hakone, is located in the Kanagawa Prefecture. But what Kamakura is best known for is its Great Buddha of Kotokuin Temple, the second largest bronze Buddha statue in all of Japan.

Besides Kotoku-in, Kamakura is also dotted with many other temples such as Engakuji Temple and Hase-dera Temple.

You can also sunbathe and swim around the sandy beaches of Kamakura. It only takes an hour and 15 minutes to get from Tokyo to Kamakura by train!

#3 KAWAGOE, SAITAMA

You do not need a trip to Kyoto to step into “Edomae Nihon”.

Kawagoe in Saitama is only a 30-minute train ride from Tokyo. The serene streets are flanked with quiet little storehouses that were built decades ago, taking you back to the Edo period.

Life here feels almost uncommercialised. You can have a meal at one of the authentic Japanese restaurants along the road, or take some traditional Japanese candy home from one of the stores.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Pocheon is home to the Pocheon Art Valley—what used to be a granite quarry on Cheonjuho Lake. It doesn’t matter whether you are a fan of natural landscapes or not; Pocheon Art Valley will be sure to take your breath away.

You can even visit Herb Island within the city. It looks slightly less developed, but there are gardens and quiet little restaurants and shops that look extra pretty in spring. It takes about an hour to get from Seoul to Pocheon by taxi.

#3 BUSAN

Busan has recently been gaining popularity, especially with the movie Train To Busan. It seems almost uncanny that you would have to take a train from Seoul to Busan, but fear not, zombies are not included on this ride.

Busan is one of the more famous villages in Korea, and getting to it is pretty convenient too, thanks to the express KTX trains. The fares might be a little pricier, but it is much faster to get to the city compared to driving or catching a bus. You can expect a commute time of about 2.5 hours by train from Seoul.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The city has many treasures just waiting to be explored. The Jagalchi Fish Market, Busan Aquarium, Gamcheon Culture Village—these are just some of the attractions you can expect to visit. Because there is so much to do, you might want to consider staying in Busan for more than a day.

#4 HWASEONG FORTRESS IN SUWON

The Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon is one of the many fragments that make up Korea’s rich cultural history. It boasts formidable stone walls that are about six kilometres high, with big gates and towers. But besides its structures, the fortress also has parks.

Hwaseong Fortress is located in the middle of Suwon city, which takes about an hour of subway ride from Seoul. From there, you can catch different buses that will drop you off near the fortress. There are still other things to do in Suwon, such as visiting the Toilet Museum, or relaxing your muscles at Buksuwon Spa.

#5 MANGWOLSA MOUNTAIN TEMPLE

Who can say no to day trip locations easily accessible by subway? The Mangwolsa Temple is one such destination, despite it being a little farther outside of Seoul, in the Gyeonggi province.

The temple is situated within Bukhansan National Park and is surrounded by lush greenery. But besides getting to Mangwolsa station via train, you will still have to hike for an hour to get to your destination. It is, after all, a mountain temple. But think of the hike as a morning workout! Your efforts will pay off once you look out of the temple and behold nature’s wonders before you.

#6 DAECHEON BEACH IN BORYEONG

Daecheon Beach in Boryeong is a great option for some family fun, and is about three hours away from central Seoul. The 3km long beach is always filled with people playing around in the water and sand.

#7 YONGIN

Yongin is another city that is also popular among other tourists visiting the country. It is two hours away from Seoul by train and bus, but you can get there within 30 to 40 minutes by taxi.

Yongin is home to some of Korea’s most famous attractions, including the Korean Folk Village. It is an area with over 200 restored traditional Korean homes from the various regions around the country. This village is the best way to immerse yourself in old-world Korean architecture, and have a glimpse of the day-to-day lives of Koreans back in the day.

The popular Everland can also be found inside Yongin city and is not a theme park to belittle. The T Express is one of the world’s biggest wooden roller coasters, and there is even the Carribean Bay (Korea’s best water park) connected to Everland.

Contrary to popular belief, Tokyo is not just about the glitzy skyscrapers. There are many tranquil destinations in the countryside that are all easily accessible by train from the city centre, and they are mostly about an hour to two’s journey.

Due to its relative far-flung locations, these places remain largely unknown that even many Japanese natives are unaware of their presence. While Tokyo is an amazing metropolis with endless dining and retail options, travellers in search for an alternative attraction—with the absence of crowds—can consider exploring the options in this guide.

From Noyamakita-Rokudoyama Park, South Inari Shrine to Ishikawa Brewery, here are 7 Countryside Destinations From Tokyo You Never Knew About.

#1 ENPUKIJI TEMPLE

The serene Enpukiji Temple is situated within a ten-minute stroll from Hakonegasaki Station, and it offers visitors an alternative quiet respite from the hectic urban life.

We were the only visitors there and truth to be told, the silence was almost deafening. The age-old place of worship is a photogenic site, so do bring your cameras along.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Should you be unfortunately allergic to seafood, there are many casual eateries of other cuisines such as a Burger Deli and Thai Nong Khai.

HOW TO GET TO SAI KUNG WATERFRONT

Take the MTR to Choi Hung Station and head for exit C2. You will usually see a long line formed outside the bus stop but fret not – the queue moves pretty fast.

Here are 23 Best Western Cafes in Hong Kong you must visit at least once in your life. Time to look at the city from a different perspective!

You can take either the green mini bus A1 or KMB 92. Bus A1 takes about 25 minutes and the frequency of it is approximately every 5 minutes. Bus 92 on the otherhand takes a little longer to arrive Sai Kung.

SAI WAN BEACH

If you are feeling adventurous, do embark on a hiking trail towards Sai Wan Beach. A return hike take from Sai Wan Ting to Sai Wan Beach takes about an hour and is relatively easy as it is fully paved.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

However, there are steep sections that may require more stamina. During the hike you will pass by a breathtaking view of High Island Reservoir and grass-grazing cattle at the countryside village. Remember to book surfboards in advance if you intend to spend an afternoon surfing at Sai Wan Beach.

HOW TO GET TO SAI WAN BEACH

Take mini bus number 29R from Sai Kung Bus Terminus (HK 20 per person for a single trip). If traveling in a group, you may want to grab a taxi instead (HKD 100). The journey up to Sai Wan Ting takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

There is always something to look forward to at Hong Kong, and there is always something to keep us returning. Here are 29 reasons to love Hong Kong.

Make your way back to Sai Wan Ting before the last bus departs in the late afternoon (timing varies daily) or you can call a taxi from Sai Kung Taxi Calling Centre. There are three numbers you can dial, 2383 0899, 2729 1199 and 2729 6600. It is recommended that you make the call on your hike back as reception fluctuates and the last thing you would want to do is to be stranded at the peak.

SHEUNG LUK STREAMS

If you can, explore beyond Sai Wan Beach and visit Sheung Luk Streams. Sheung Luk is a popular cliff-jumping destination and is best visited during summer. This activity will probably take an additional hour or two, so do plan your day trip ahead!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

If you skipped the Iwatayama Monkey Park earlier, you can still spot a few monkeys on the way up to Kameyama Park, which sits behind Tenryu-ji. Up here, you’ll see Zhou Enlai’s “Arashiyama in the Rain” stone monument as well as a bronze statue further along of Tsuzaki Muraok-no-Tsubone, a court lady-in-waiting. Continue upwards for a breathtaking view of the Hozugawa River, which flows into the Oi River.

Otherwise, head further up north along the main road where you’ll reach the path leading to Arashiyama’s famous bamboo groves. The winding path is a 200-metre stretch of green serenity and the perfect way to slow down and feel embraced by nature away from the rest of the world.

You’ll be charmed by the elegance of Arashiyama but make sure you don’t overwhelm yourself with a jam packed itinerary – take your time and breathe in your tranquil surroundings.
