The city of Bath, located in Somerset, is famous for its Roman-built baths which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

#2 POCHEON

The quaint Pocheon is definitely one for those looking for brilliant photo opportunities. It is located near the Demilitarized Zone (the border between North and South Korean), so the military presence within the city is going to be pretty obvious.

Pocheon is home to the Pocheon Art Valley—what used to be a granite quarry on Cheonjuho Lake. It doesn’t matter whether you are a fan of natural landscapes or not; Pocheon Art Valley will be sure to take your breath away.

You can even visit Herb Island within the city. It looks slightly less developed, but there are gardens and quiet little restaurants and shops that look extra pretty in spring. It takes about an hour to get from Seoul to Pocheon by taxi.

#3 BUSAN

Busan has recently been gaining popularity, especially with the movie Train To Busan. It seems almost uncanny that you would have to take a train from Seoul to Busan, but fear not, zombies are not included on this ride.

Busan is one of the more famous villages in Korea, and getting to it is pretty convenient too, thanks to the express KTX trains. The fares might be a little pricier, but it is much faster to get to the city compared to driving or catching a bus. You can expect a commute time of about 2.5 hours by train from Seoul.

The city has many treasures just waiting to be explored. The Jagalchi Fish Market, Busan Aquarium, Gamcheon Culture Village—these are just some of the attractions you can expect to visit. Because there is so much to do, you might want to consider staying in Busan for more than a day.

#4 HWASEONG FORTRESS IN SUWON

The Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon is one of the many fragments that make up Korea’s rich cultural history. It boasts formidable stone walls that are about six kilometres high, with big gates and towers. But besides its structures, the fortress also has parks.

Hwaseong Fortress is located in the middle of Suwon city, which takes about an hour of subway ride from Seoul. From there, you can catch different buses that will drop you off near the fortress. There are still other things to do in Suwon, such as visiting the Toilet Museum, or relaxing your muscles at Buksuwon Spa.

#5 MANGWOLSA MOUNTAIN TEMPLE

Who can say no to day trip locations easily accessible by subway? The Mangwolsa Temple is one such destination, despite it being a little farther outside of Seoul, in the Gyeonggi province.

The temple is situated within Bukhansan National Park and is surrounded by lush greenery. #6 DAECHEON BEACH IN BORYEONG

Daecheon Beach in Boryeong is a great option for some family fun, and is about three hours away from central Seoul. The 3km long beach is always filled with people playing around in the water and sand.

In the summertime, lifeguards will clear the beach out close to evening, when the tide is high. During that time, you can take a stroll along the beachside restaurants and stalls that sell fresh seafood.

#4 KUMAGAWA SHRINE

Kumagawa Shrine is the oldest wooden building in Fussa and has been designated as a tangible cultural asset of Tokyo. It was constructed in the Azuchi–Momoyama period and the residents here believe that the shrine is Kumagawa Village’s guardian.

Kumagawa Shrine can be reached within an eight-minute walk from JR Kumagawa Station. An antique market is held here on the second Sunday of each month.

Many seafood restaurants line up the pier, offering the freshest seafood possible. Famous restaurants around the corner include Chuen Kee and Loaf On Chinese restaurants. The former was previously listed in the Michelin Guide while the latter has been bestowed an honorable Michelin star.

HOW TO GET TO SAI KUNG WATERFRONT

Take the MTR to Choi Hung Station and head for exit C2. You will usually see a long line formed outside the bus stop but fret not – the queue moves pretty fast.

If you are feeling adventurous, do embark on a hiking trail towards Sai Wan Beach. A return hike take from Sai Wan Ting to Sai Wan Beach takes about an hour and is relatively easy as it is fully paved.

However, there are steep sections that may require more stamina. During the hike you will pass by a breathtaking view of High Island Reservoir and grass-grazing cattle at the countryside village. Remember to book surfboards in advance if you intend to spend an afternoon surfing at Sai Wan Beach.

HOW TO GET TO SAI WAN BEACH

Take mini bus number 29R from Sai Kung Bus Terminus (HK 20 per person for a single trip). If traveling in a group, you may want to grab a taxi instead (HKD 100). The journey up to Sai Wan Ting takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

HOW TO GET TO SHEUNG LUK STREAMS

Getting to Sheung Luk Streams is the tricky part as there are no clear-cut directions on how to get there. If you already facing Sai Wan Beach from the village, turn away and head left towards the campsite. Follow the sand trail and you know you are near when passing by a secluded hydroponic farm. Advance further in and you would be warned by signboard about the difficulties ahead. Proceed at your own risk!

Sitting snuggly on the western outskirts of Kyoto surrounded by mountains, Arashiyama is perfect for a day-trip transition from crowded city life to scenic mother nature. The efficiency of the Japanese transport system allows you to visit this picturesque landscape within the hour, making Arashiyama the perfect place for a day trip from Kyoto.

The area is serviced by several buses as well as three large train stations on either side, Keifuku Arashiyama Station, Hankyu Arashiyama Station and JR Saga-Sarashiyama Station both of which are within walking distance of the central area. It’s a beautifully expansive area so here’s a run down of the most unmissable things to cover off in your 24 hours in Arashiyama.

If you alight from Hankyu Arashiyama Station, you’ll first encounter the Togetsu-kyo Bridge, which was named during the Heian period by Emperor Kameyama because of the way the moon appeared to cross over it, reflecting off the surface of the Oi River.

The structure is a favourite (and romantic) viewing platform for visitors to admire the landscape views of the surrounding mountains as well as the cherry blossoms. If you’re lucky, the stretch leading up to the bridge has some local stores set-up selling okonomiyaki (Japanese-styled pizza), yakisoba (fried noodles) and takoyaki (octopus balls) which will have you geared up for exploration!

Before you cross the bridge, head towards Mount Arashiyama where you can climb up around 150 steps to reach the Iwatayama Monkey Park. The 30 minute ascent brings you closer to almost 130 of our furry cousins up close, letting you feed them but the real treat is the unrivalled panoramic views of Kyoto’s city sprawl.

Make your way across the bridge and along the main road flanked on either side by shops, which sell a variety of local sweets and snacks as well as handicraft. Most places offer sample tasting before you buy which is great if you need a few souvenirs for those not as lucky as yourselves.

But don’t stop yet. You’ll have time to explore the street while you wait for a table for lunch, which usually takes upwards of 30 minutes on a quiet day. Head further down until you see Hirokawa, a restaurant into a two-storey traditional wooden house which specialises in freshly sourced eel from farms all over Japan, offering a selection of set lunches and a la carte dishes that will make your wait well worth it.

After a delectable lunch, cross the street and enter the UNESCO heritage site and iconic temple Tenryu-ji. The temple itself and its buildings has since been rebuilt and restored multiple times since it was first erected originally as a palace in 1339 but the Zen garden still retains much of its former magnificence.

If you skipped the Iwatayama Monkey Park earlier, you can still spot a few monkeys on the way up to Kameyama Park, which sits behind Tenryu-ji. Up here, you’ll see Zhou Enlai’s “Arashiyama in the Rain” stone monument as well as a bronze statue further along of Tsuzaki Muraok-no-Tsubone, a court lady-in-waiting. Continue upwards for a breathtaking view of the Hozugawa River, which flows into the Oi River.

Otherwise, head further up north along the main road where you’ll reach the path leading to Arashiyama’s famous bamboo groves. The winding path is a 200-metre stretch of green serenity and the perfect way to slow down and feel embraced by nature away from the rest of the world.

You’ll be charmed by the elegance of Arashiyama but make sure you don’t overwhelm yourself with a jam packed itinerary – take your time and breathe in your tranquil surroundings.
