New Eastern Kim Tee—a traditional Bak Kwa shop in Serangoon Gardens—is now selling Bak Kwa Fries. The popular Bak Kwa shop has created the Bak Kwa Fries using its popular signature recipe.

Unlike their usual Bak Kwa slices which are made considerably thinner than most Bak Kwa that you get in Singapore, they have made the Bak Kwa Fries thicker, chunkier and juicer.

Forget about spam fries, you need to try this new Bak Kwa Fries!

Starting out from humble roots, turning his interest into passion and passion into a business, founder, Mr Teo Kim Tee began his own signature brand—New Eastern (Kim Tee) Dried and Minced Pork—back in 1976, setting up shop in the heart of Serangoon Gardens. They’ve remained at the same location ever since and have now grown to become a popular name among many.

Their bak kwa is unique in that it is made considerably thinner than most, allowing the complex smoky aromas and sweet, porky flavours to melt on the tongue. Priding themselves on producing bak kwa that is 100% hand-made, their products begin the traditional way, cooked in a charcoal oven before subsequently grilled over a charcoal stove.

Now, back to the Bak Kwa Fries. It is available at an introductory price of S$6 and they are freshly prepared at New Eastern Kim Tee at Serangoon Garden (22 Maju Ave) and Chinatown (22 Sago St).

And from 22 to 26 Dec 2020, New Eastern Kim Tee is offering free delivery with no minimum order for the Bak Kwa Fries!

The coming of the Lunar New Year marks the start of many things for the Chinese, with excessive feasting and snacking ranking the highest among our list of priorities. Among the popular mainstays such as pineapple tarts, love letters and other confectionery delights, the one we always go berserk for, is bak kwa—otherwise commonly known as rou gan or barbecued pork jerky.

As of today, the family heirloom that is Mr Teo’s bak kwa is run by his two grandchildren who not only aim to ensure that his legacy lives on but to give the brand itself a breath of new life through contemporary approaches—all while maintaining the stellar standard of their traditional handmade bak kwa.

OVER 40 YEARS OF TRADITION

Boasting more than 40 years of tradition in the way that they select and prepare their barbecued pork jerky, one can expect nothing short of pure deliciousness from its lovely sweet glaze, to the smoky and charred exterior that gives the bak kwa its signature taste.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Every batch of fresh pork undergoes a careful inspection process to ensure that only the best quality products are used. In addition, they also take the extra step in trimming off excess fat, making sure that their bak kwa is kept fairly lean—great news for all of you health conscious folks.

No preservatives are added, which also means that the average shelf life of their bak kwa is only about 1 to 2 weeks if stored properly. Although, if you’re a sucker for bak kwa like us, chances are they won’t last more than 5 days.

SLICED BAK KWA

If you’re new to their products, then you surely won’t go wrong with their Sliced Bak Kwa. Considerably thinner and sweeter than other brands, every strip melts delightfully on the tongue, creating a different experience altogether.

Allowed to roast in a massive charcoal oven, their bak kwa is laced with a strong smoky aroma as well as a crispy, char-grilled exterior. We particularly enjoyed this version as it has a nice chew to it, a vital quality when it comes to any meat jerky.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The soft one takes on a much lighter hue and is much fluffier in comparison. Just as delicious, the soft pork floss melts easily on the tongue and, like a fine powder, delivers a massive flavour punch that coats the entire mouth.

Sweet, savoury and oozing with a flavourful barbecued pork aroma all in one, we can already see ourselves piling this onto everything.

It is no secret that Fresh Fruits Lab (FFL) is our go-to cafe in the East of Singapore, and since its opening, we have been loyally patronising the cafe for its ever-satisfying menu.

Of course, we love that the place is nicely done up too. If you haven’t been, what you are missing out on is a colourful space that is decorated to look like the coolest laboratory you will ever see.

As for the food, they will surprise you in ways you’d never imagine – like burgers with a fruit salad, meats and seafood with fruit innuendos, and cold pressed fruit juices in a plethora of combinations. Well, fresh fruits lab, right? Every component is covered.

Readers of Ladyironchef will receive 50% off the second main course during dinner on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from now until 28 Feb 2016 when you flash this post or quote “ladyironchef”.
Fresh Fruits Lab has recently introduced a new menu and of course we had to be among the firsts to try! Here are the highlights from Fresh Fruits Lab’s new menu.

PORK JERKY (BAK KWA) FUSION PIZZA

For the love of bakkwa! Seriously, this Pork Jerky Fusion Pizza (S$17) is a dream come true for us! Heck, we are so done with pizzas with salami and whatnot! Give us bakkwa! All-time favourite BBQ-ed pork jerky slices sit alongside pineapple and rocket leaves, complete with a balsamic glaze. #PizzaSlay

BEEF SHROOMS PIZZA

Sure, mushroom pizzas isn’t uncommon, but FFL’s version is one not to be missed either. It comes with generous slices of marinated beef and lots of sautéed shiitake mushrooms. Complementing flavours and a touch of red wine sauce, the Beefy Shrooms Pizza (S$19) makes a great dinner option.

PORK SCHNITZEL

Classic deep fried breaded pork loin never goes out of style. Staying true to the cafe’s belief in incorporating fruits into their dishes, the Pork Schnitzel (S$18) at FFL is served with tropical salsa fruit salad and Thai Chilli pomelo sauce.

SOY COD

We had a hard time deciding which our favourite(s) are, but everyone at the table unanimously agreed that the Soy Cod (S$39) may be the priciest item on the new menu, but is also the best dish.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

And we need to tell you how we are so addicted to the truffled scrambled eggs that is part of the Messy Breakfast (S$17).

WHY WE RETURN TO FRESH FRUITS LAB AGAIN AND AGAIN

Above these all, Fresh Fruits Lab is one cafe in Singapore that never rest on their laurels. They are constantly experimenting with new dishes, playing around with fruits and coming up with innovative dishes and desserts, and always surprises us with amazing menus at prices that are comfortable enough for us to return time and again.

The cherry on top? Their dedication to aesthetics. Plating is one the crew take pride in, and we are just glad we always have pretty food to post on Instagram when we dine at Fresh Fruits Lab.
