Soek Seng 1954 Bicycle Cafe is a hidden cafe that is situated far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The owner is a vintage bike collector who proudly displays his beautiful vintage bicycles all around the cafe. Needless to say, we were all in awe of the cafe’s lovely interior.

Besides that, having a meal at this bike cafe is a unique experience in itself. Diners are able to watch private airplanes take off from Seletar Airport which is located just beside the bike cafe. How cool is that?!

However as one of the most ulu cafes in Singapore, is it really worth the effort to make all your way there for a meal? Well, read on to find out more!

Grab a seat outdoors during good weather and have your meal while admiring the private jets parked at Seletar Airport. If you are lucky, you may even catch sightings of planes taking off or landing!

Psst… let us share a secret with you. Come around evening so you can witness the sunset. This is one of the rare few places in Singapore where there are no high rise buildings around so you get a complete view of the reddish and orange hues.

Visitors can also choose to sit comfortably indoors as it is air conditioned. Wander around the cafe and take pictures of these classic bicycles and artwork that have been artistically hung up on the wall.

Arriving piping hot in a stone bowl, the Katsu Don came with thick slices of juicy chicken slices, savoury egg, sauteed onions and bits of seaweed and carrots on top of warm Japanese rice.

Just like what you would expect from most fish and chips, the Fish & Chips at Soek Seng 1954 Bicycle Cafe had a crispy batter and every order of the Fish & Chips comes with french fries, fresh coleslaw and salad.

Their menu is a combination of local, western and Japanese mains that are mostly below S$20. Other highlights you can go for include the Sirloin Steak, Ayam Panggang and Gyudon.

To be honest, the dishes are not fantastic and we won’t travel all the way here just for the food. However, it is a great place to chill with your friends and enjoy a beer or two. The bicycle cafe also allows dogs at the al fresco area.

If there is one dessert you must try at Acme Bar & Coffee, this has to be it. The moist brownie was warm and rich in chocolate, and complementing the ice cream wonderfully was the generous serving of huge oreo chunks.

Acme Bar & Coffee’s Cappuccino (RM15++/ S$5++) tasted just like any good cappuccino you would find elsewhere. We liked that it was creamy with a hint of bitterness from the espresso. Sugar cubes are given at the side for those who prefer it to be sweeter.

Going there for their mains? You can choose from the Baked Seabass Parcel & Rice (RM35++/ S$11.70++), Grilled Marinated Lamb Shoulder (RM57++/ S$19++) and a range of pasta dishes.

Desserts options include Light-As-Air-Pavlova (RM19++/ S$6.30++), Orange Lava Cake (RM17++/ S$5.70++) and an array of sliced cakes at the counter.

There is no lack of good cafes along Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur and besides the popular Merchant’s Lane, one up and coming dining establishment joining the cafe scene is Chocha Foodstore.

Only the finest female calves are picked from the Kuroge breeds registered in the Matsusaka Beef Management System and reared under strict guidelines. While most cows are slaughtered at the 18-month mark, these virgin cattle will live till about three years old.

Additionally, they are massaged with distilled Shochu and fed beer about half a year before being processed.

Younger kids may like crayons and colouring books or fun car games like having a spelling bee. Here is a fun fact: oysters do not have central nervous system; hence like plants, they may not feel any pain at all. Because of this, some have even suggested that oysters are in fact, vegan. Shocking?

COMMON TYPES OF OYSTERS

There are five major oyster species—Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea sikamea, Crassostrea virginicas, Ostrea edulis and Ostrea lurida.

To put it in simpler terms, they are Pacific oysters, Kumamoto oysters, Atlantic oysters, European flats and Olympia oysters.

Kumamoto Oysters
Kumamto oysters are more deeply cupped with smaller meats inside. However, these meats are usually a lot sweeter and easier to consume, even for beginners. It is also known as the ‘Chardonnay of oysters’.

Atlantic Oysters
Atlantic oysters are usually a lot bigger and they are most commonly found in North America. Their taste come with a slight metallic finish.

European Flats
Native to Europe, as per its apt name, the European Flat oyster is usually large and quite rare compared to other commercial types. They have their own unique taste that differs greatly from the rest—rich and extremely flavourful.

Olympia Oysters
The Olympia oysters are tiny and are almost extinct right now, hence it is the least common type of oyster found in this day and age.

HOW TO EAT OYSTERS

Oysters are meant to be slurped whole. However, do you know what the tiny fork given is for? A part of the oyster is attached to the shell, and the purpose of the tiny fork is to release it from the grip so that you can eat your oysters with ease.

To really taste how amazing your oyster is, skip any extra ingredients completely. However, if you must, add a dash of lemon, cocktail sauce, vinaigrette or horseradish just to amplify and complement the oyster, without completely masking its natural taste.

Also, a tip for beginners is to not chew the oyster so much; in fact, you can swallow them after one or two bites.

WHAT THEY ARE BEST PAIRED WITH

Some popular pairings are with Chablis, Dry Champagne, Muscadet and other crisp, dry white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, or Guinness and other stouts.

Dry wines or champagne are usually recommended for raw oysters and for the latter, the bubbling of the drink complements the oysters really well.
