Foong Kee Traditional Charcoal Roaster, one of the best Chinese roast meat stalls in Singapore, has reopened as a hawker stall at Commonwealth Crescent.

The famous roast meat eatery along Keong Saik Road closed in June 2021 and they are now back as a hawker stall at Commonwealth Crescent, where his eatery was located prior to the move to Keong Saik Road.

Foong Kee’s chef-owner Derrick Wong closed his roast meat eatery as he needed a rest after working for more than 20 years.

At the new hawker stall, you can enjoy Foong Kee’s legendary roast meat with prices starting from S$4 for a plate of char siew/roast pork rice, and S$4.5 for a plate of roast duck rice.

You can also order a whole roast duck (S$50), as well as char siew and roast pork at S$50/kg.

It goes without saying that Foong Kee’s roast pork is fantastic. The ratio of fat to lean pork meat was just right, and the crispy crackling skin had such a satisfying crunch to it. The savoury marinate really did permeate through the meat itself as every bite was so flavourful.

The char siew didn’t lose out either. The caramelised crust had a wonderful char and smokiness to it, with the slightly burnt edges playing off the sweetness of the sauce. The fat on the pork wasn’t overwhelming either and was just enough to keep the lean meat moist enough.

While they’re more famous for the former two, we felt that their duck deserved much praise. The cuts of duck meat were absolutely succulent and tender, with its natural game meat taste amplified in a pleasant umami way without being too heavy. The skin was also really thin and crisp, which we liked a lot.

Established in Karuizawa in the Nagono Prefecture of Japan, Suju Masayuki is a cosy and homely Japanese restaurant which offers traditional Japanese cuisine. They currently have 6 restaurants in Japan and 1 outlet in Singapore at Mandarin Gallery.

Suju Masayuki will be opening a new outlet at Ngee Ann City taking over the unit vacated by JTSH Cafe (formerly known as DC Super Heroes Cafe) next to the taxi stand.

Suju Masayuki is a spot in town that we frequent for excellent teishoku at reasonable prices.

Their Shoga Yaki is, hands down, the best stir-fried Japanese pork with ginger and soy sauce that we’ve had in Singapore. Remember to top up S$5 for their Tonjiru!

Other dishes on the menu include Tonkatsu, Chicken Teriyaki, Gindara Misozuke Yaki, Chirashi-don and the juicy Chicken Nanban.

It is still business as usual at Suju Masayuki’s original outlet at Mandarin Gallery, while the new location at Ngee Ann City will be opening in early 2023.

Glacier, a minimalist botanical-themed cafe in Lavender known for its brunch fare and Mochi Waffles, will be closing on 31 Jan 2023.

Hafary Holdings has acquired a row of shophouses along Lavender Street, Foch Road and Tyrwhitt Road to build its new flagship store and Glacier Cafe will have to move out in January next year.

Opened by the team behind Onalu—a bagel specialist at SMU—Glacier is an all-white cafe which offers the standard cafe fare, coffee and desserts.

Glacier’s menu is small and concise, with prices ranging from S$16 to S$24 for a main course.

The Glacier’s Big Breakfast comes with perfectly-cooked scrambled eggs that are runny, bacon strips, German pork bratwurst, roasted truffle baby potatoes, mushrooms, salad and brioche toast.

Glacier will be closed indefinitely and they currently do not have any plans to reopen at a new location. Drop by the cafe to have brunch and coffee before their last day of operation on 31 Jan 2023.

Known for its flame-torched wagyu beef bowls and other Japanese donburi, Waa Cow! is opening a new Japanese Yakiniku restaurant at myVillage in Serangoon Gardens.

Waa Cow! Yakiniku is a brand new concept which offers a different dining experience from their usual wagyu beef bowls.

Beef bowls are a mainstay at many Japanese restaurants, but what goes into a bowl and how every component is treated varies across the board. Waa Cow! has made a name for itself by serving wagyu beef bowls at reasonable prices.

You can’t go wrong with their Mentaiko Wagyu Beef Bowl that comprises a bed of Akitakomachi rice that is topped with 24-hour sous vide Wagyu beef smeared with creamy mentaiko and a tender onsen egg.

Waa Cow! joins JU Signatures and Isshin Machi as the new restaurants in the Serangoon Gardens estate and it is taking over the unit which is vacated by DBS Treasures on level two of myVillage, next to iSteak and Hajime Tonkatsu.

The official opening date for the new dining concept in Serangoon Gardens is on 1 September 2022.

They currently have three other outlets at NUS University Town, Marina One and Change Alley Mall, as well as four cloud kitchens in Singapore.

Canopy Garden Dining is opening a third outlet at Changi City Point with a pet-friendly al fresco dining garden concept.

Canopy Garden Dining outlet at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park has been around for years and it is a popular hangout for families and friends.

It opened a second outlet at HortPark in December last year and the newest outlet at Changi City Point is its first outlet within a shopping mall.

The new location at Changi City Point is targetted at working professionals in Changi Business Park and there will be a new tapas menu featuring small bites that are great for after-work drinks.

Bread & Butter by XY started out as a home-based bakery in 2020 and it has officially opened a new pink bakery cafe at Oxley Tower in the central business district (CBD).

The small cafe is located on the ground floor of Oxley Tower along 138 Robinson Road and there are three small tables for dine-in.

Popular brunch & dessert cafe, Lola’s Cafe is opening a second outlet in Holland Village and the official opening date is set on 20 July 2022.

Known for its brunch fare and desserts, Lola’s Cafe started as a neighbourhood cafe in the Kovan neighbourhood and it remains a go-to brunch spot for residents in the vicinity.
