The Grand Palace also houses Wat Phra Kaew, which translates to ‘The Temple Of The Emerald Buddha’. This is one of the most sacred places in Thailand and the small Buddha statue that resides in the temple is believed to be more than 2000 years old. The Buddha was created in India and has been moved a number of times before it was re-discovered in 1434 in a temple in Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand.

LUNCH AT THE SIXTH 

Located just a short walk away from Wat Arun and the Grand Palace, The Sixth is a cosy and hip little cafe that is run by a young couple. The quirky and homely decor gives the entire place a very relaxed and chill atmosphere, making it the perfect pitstop after a tiring morning of exploring the Grand Palace. They specialise in wholesome and soulful Thai food which include the likes of Tom Yum Koong, Phad Thai and Thai Green Curry.

WAT PHO (RECLINING BUDDHA) 

Another historical monument that you definitely need to check out is Wat Pho, home of the famous reclining Buddha. Aside from that, it is also the national headquarters for the teaching and preservation of traditional Thai massage. You can get a massage at the Wat Pho Thai Traditional Massage School as well to complete the experience.

WAT ARUN 

Directly opposite Wat Pho is Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn. You can reach it by taking a riverboat from Saphan Taksin. The compound features a majestic 70-meter-high spire that is intricately decorated with tiny pieces of Chinese porcelain and coloured glass. If you are observant, you’d even realise that the image of Wat Arun is actually printed on Thailand’s 10-baht coins!

DINNER AT THIPSAMAI 

End off a tiring day of exploring by having dinner at the famous Thipsamai. Dubbed to have the best pad thai in Bangkok, this humble eatery has even managed to snag themselves a Bib Gourmand award by the Michelin Guide. The place is constantly flooded with both tourists and locals alike so do try to head on down early to secure yourself a seat!

While Bangkok is well-known for its shopping and food scene, it also boasts an incredibly rich and unique history. If you want to immerse yourself in Bangkok’s beautiful culture but you don’t know where to start, one of the places that you need to add to your  Bangkok itinerary is the Grand Palace.

Located in the old city of Bangkok on the banks of the famous Chao Phraya river, this majestic, sacred landmark is nothing short of breathtaking. We recommend that you visit this along with other famous sites such as Wat Arun and Wat Pho, which are all a short distance from each other.

Before embarking on your journey, please note that there is a very strict dress code that you need to adhere to or you will not be able to enter the palace grounds. If you are not dressed properly, you will not be allowed to enter the palace and you may have to purchase clothes to change into onsite.

Men are expected to wear long pants with shirts that have sleeves. Women, on the other hand, should be modestly dressed in clothing that covers the shoulders and legs. Covered shoes are recommended but if you want to wear sandals, it is advisable to wear socks with them.

When we visited the temple, the temple was filled with throngs of people and it was very crowded, so for those of you who hate crowds, do take note of this before you visit the place.

Entry tickets cost 500 baht per person.

WAT PHRA KAEW (THE TEMPLE OF THE EMERALD BUDDHA)

Despite being called The Emerald Buddha, the Buddha is actually made from green jade. The robes of the buddha are also changed according to the seasons by His Majesty the King of Thailand.

Do take note that guests are not allowed to take photos of The Emerald Buddha within the temple or you will be fined.

GORGEOUS ARCHITECTURE 

What we love the most about the Grand Palace is its stunning and intricate architecture. We could honestly spend a whole day here just admiring the detailed handiwork of these breathtaking structures and it is just surreal thinking of how the people in the past had managed to construct these beauties with limited tools and machinery.

Feel free to take a few snapshots with the gorgeous architecture as a memento but do take note that as the palace grounds are usually very crowded, it can be quite hard to do so without having someone wander into your shot.

EXPLORE EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY 

The palace grounds are massive and it is pretty easy to get lost while you explore the place. We ourselves ended up going in circles before finding our way out of the grounds. However, take this chance to properly explore every inch of the palace. Every wrong turn led us to something interesting like detailed murals, majestic statues and gold speckled structures.

ROYAL RECEPTION HALLS 

On the way out, do pay a visit to the grand Royal Reception Halls where important ceremonial occasions like coronations are held at. The Royal Reception Halls also houses the Dusit Hall, the antique throne as well as a museum that has information on the restoration of the Grand Palace as well as numerous Buddha images.

You can’t say that you’ve been to Bangkok unless you’ve experienced their night market scene. Bangkok is home to a plethora of markets that sell anything and everything that you could need; from food to the latest fashion trends to services like manicures and perms, they’ve got you thoroughly covered.

If you don’t have much time to go night market hopping in Bangkok, the one market you need to head to to get the full experience is the famous Talad Rot Fai Srinakarin, which is also known as Rot Fai Train Market. There are a number of similar train markets across Bangkok but this is one of the bigger ones.

This market is a little out of the way from central Bangkok but we promise you that the journey is completely worth it.

Talad Rot Fai Srinakarin is located at Srinakarin Soi 51 in between two malls called Seacon Square Shopping Mall and Paradise Place. We recommend that you take a grab down as the place is not as accessible to public transport like central Bangkok.

What we love about this place is how it feels like there are multiple night markets packed into one area. Just when you think that you’ve finished walking the whole stretch, you find yourself in another completely different area filled with more rows of exciting things to explore.

FOOD 

Like every other night market in Bangkok, Talad Rot Fai Srinakarin is no short of glorious food and we promise you that you’ll be spoilt for choice here.

Be prepared to walk down rows and rows of stalls selling scrumptious eats; from street food such as fried beef, skewered meat and coconut ice cream to proper food stalls that sell boat noodles and pad thai, the choices are truly endless.

While here, we also recommend that you try the famous Leng Saap, which is something the Rot Fai Markets are famous for. Leng Saap is essentially spicy pork bone soup and the dish consists of gigantic portions of pork ribs and spine that are a doused in a full-flavoured spicy broth packed with lots of lime, chilli and coriander.

There is a stall in Singapore that specialises in it too, but honestly, nothing tastes quite as good as the original!

SHOPPING 

Shopaholics will be thrilled to know that there is so much shopping to do here that you probably won’t have time to cover everything within one night. Get lost in the massive maze of endless stalls that each specialise in something different.

The streets here are packed with a smorgasbord of dirt-cheap clothes, knick-knacks and accessories for people of all ages so there is something for everyone. Men, fret not, you won’t be banished to a corner while your girlfriend shops; there are plenty of things here for you too!

Take a break from the shopping by looking out for one of these cool vintage cars along the shopping streets!

LOCAL TALENT 

What we also love about Bangkok night markets is the fact that it isn’t just all about shopping and food. Here, you can also appreciate and support the work of talented local artists who sometimes even sell their pieces to earn a living.

For instance, we came across a talented caricature artist who was drawing a picture of a girl and her boyfriend. It was pretty mesmerising to watch him at work! Aside from him, we also came across numerous stalls selling bags, shoes, art pieces and accessories designed by local designers.

VINTAGE ITEMS 

Hipsters will be excited to know that the market has an entire section dedicated to vintage goods. Here, you can rummage through stores brimming with preloved goods and vintage items to see what you can unearth. As they always say: one man’s junk is another man’s treasure!

The vintage area doesn’t just have vintage knick-knacks; they also have a few massive vintage aircrafts on display too! Snap a picture with one these giant planes and helicopters for a cool new profile picture update.

LIVE MUSIC & BARS 

If shopping isn’t your thing, you can also head over to one of the many bars and pubs in the market to just chill and bask in some good music.

The drinks and food at these bars and pubs are also relatively cheaper as compared to Singapore so just go nuts!
