Previously from Wasabi Tei, Mitsuba and Chikuwa Tei, Chef Peter Teo is no stranger in the local food scene. Despite his notorious reputation as a food nazi, he has always been known for serving excellent Japanese food.

Kaiware Japanese Restaurant at TripleOne Somerset is his latest venture. It offers a range of Teishoku (S$24 – S$32), Nabe (S$22 – S$35), Sashimi (S$30 onwards), as well as a pretty affordable 8-course Omakase set (S$58++/pax), but the only reason why we made a trip down was to try his famous Chirashi-don.

The Haru Chirashi Sushi (S$28) was decent, but it did not live up to expectations. The sashimi wasn’t particularly outstanding, and the rice could have been sweeter. We also didn’t like the fact that the sashimi was served separately from the rice, which kind of defeats the whole idea of a chirashi-don. At the same price, you can get better chirashi-dons at sushi restaurants like Chikuwa Tei and The Sushi Bar.

What we would return for is the nabemono. There are ten options under the Nabe category including the signature Cod Fish and Vegetables Nabe (S$30) and Steamed Sea Bream Head Nabe (S$32). The Sukiyaki (S$28) may seem deceptively simple, but we assure you that the soup stock was so gratifying, you would crave for more. The beef slices came in a generous portion, as with the veggies.

We would not be rushing to come back here just to have a meal, especially not when Fukuichi Japanese Dining – which offers excellent value-for-money Japanese food – is just next door. But if you have been a follower of Chef Peter Teo, you might want to check this place out the next time you are dining in Orchard Road.
