We all have our favourite aisle in the supermarket, whether it’s “bread, spreads & jam” or “condiments & dried goods”. For some of us, though, it isn’t an aisle. It’s a full-blown section. That’s right, the ice cream section.

We know, that place is dangerous territory — where temptations flow like no tomorrow and any remnants of self-control we thought we had fade into oblivion. But, some days just call for an ice cream treat.

If you’re always reaching for that same Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey tub or that box of Magnum sticks, we’re here to introduce you to a whole new world. We’ve compiled a list of 10 other excellent ice creams right under your nose that you’ve been sorely missing out on!

How about trying something new for a change? You’ll never know unless you try.

#1 DREYER’S COOKIES & CREAM

This one’s for all the Oreo fans. Cookies & Cream is no groundbreaking flavour but Dreyer’s has really nailed this classic. Made from fresh milk, the creamy vanilla ice cream is generously dotted with cookie bits for that delicious crunch.

Best eaten with a warm fudgy brownie. Mmm.

Available at Fairprice, Cold Storage, Marketplace and Giant.

#2 KING’S TEH TARIK POTONG ICE CREAM

If you didn’t have potong as a child, did you really grow up in Singapore? Potong is no fancy gelato but we’ll always have a soft spot for this nostalgic treat.

As faithful as we are to our OG flavours, such as red bean and black glutinous rice, this Teh Tarik Potong is really leading us astray. It’s has a pretty strong tea profile, making it really aromatic. We can almost hear the slushing of the teh with every bite.

Available at Fairprice and Cold Storage.

LA CREMARIA ALMOND PECAN PASSION ICE CREAM

We don’t know which sounds better — the fancy name of the brand or the ice cream flavour itself. Either way, this brainchild of Nestlé’s is really a stunner.

Pecan-flavoured ice cream is swirled with chocolate sauce and almond chunks, promising a nutty, chocolatey and creamy indulgence. Definitely a must-have for nutty fans.

Available at Giant and Sheng Shiong.

#4 MELONA ICE BAR

With its slightly tacky font and plain design, Melona Ice Bar looks pretty unassuming. But, just wait for the plot twist. Fruity, smooth and carried by a hint of sweetness, This potong lookalike is shockingly good.

It comes in an assortment of flavours, from melon to mango, so go on and take your pick!

#5 SAMANCO GREEN TEA ICE CREAM SANDWICH

What do you get when you cross a Taiyaki with an ice cream sandwich? No points for guessing. Samanco Green Tea Ice Cream stands out from the sea of ice cream tubs and sticks with its fishy outfit.

But it’s more than just its good looks. The combination of milky matcha ice cream with sweet red bean paste is truly a match made in heaven. The matcha flavour isn’t the most concentrated, so it’s great if you’re not into bitter notes.

#6 THE ICE CREAM & COOKIE CO. ONDE ONDE

This brand hasn’t been around as long as some of the old-timers have but it’s certainly not to be trifled with. Their Onde Onde ice cream is a case in point. This coconut milk-based ice cream is infused with all-natural pandan extract and laced with coconut mochi, desiccated coconut and delicious gula melaka.

A taste of your favourite traditional kueh in every scoop. And yes, it’s dairy-free so even the lactose-intolerant people can rejoice!

#7 WALL’S ASIAN DELIGHT ICE CREAM — TARO

We can already hear the steps of the orh nee fans running towards their nearest supermarkets. This taro ice cream popsicle looks and tastes like yammy paradise.

Yam-flavoured ice cream spiked with actual yam chunks is coated in a refreshing layer of coconut confection. It’s smooth and fragrant with the occasional soft crunch. Good on you, Wall’s, good on you.

#8 WALL’S VIENNETTA

Touted as “the fanciest ice cream cake of the 90s”, the Viennetta is a dreamy confection of layers upon layers of luscious ice cream and compound chocolate. Yes, sorry to disappoint, but there isn’t actually cake in it.

But, that doesn’t make it any less amazing. This supreme creation will surely have you feeling like royalty as you tuck into it. It’s available in two flavours — chocolate and vanilla.

#9 WARAKU HOKKAIDO FRESH CREAM DAIFUKU

Whoever thought of putting mochi and ice cream together, thank you. The bounciness of the mochi and richness of the ice cream go hand in hand to create an absolutely winning combination.

Good news — you don’t have to travel down to Japanese marts to get your fix of mochi ice cream. This daifuku ice cream made in Japan is every mochi lover’s dream come true, stuffed with a whole strawberry and fresh cream.

#10 WEI’S DARK CHOCOLATE

Here’s another great option for those who are sensitive to dairy. Wei’s Dark Chocolate sorbet is so rich and velvety you’ll scrambling to read the ingredient list to make sure there really isn’t any dairy in it.

And there really isn’t. Vegan-friendly, gluten-free and free of artificial flavours, it’s almost too good to be true.

Situated along Haji Lane, Moosh Softserve is the latest addition to the hipster street. Primarily serving soft serve (for takeaways only), this Muslim-owned soft serve shop currently has six flavours including classic flavours such as Strawberry and Blueberry.

Besides the classics, Moosh Softserve also offers unique dessert-inspired flavours such as Apple Crumble, S’mores, and the popular Ondeh Ondeh.

If you are looking for some refreshing sweet treats to cool off in the sweltering heat, Moosh Softserve is where you should head for.

The Ondeh Ondeh soft serve (Regular: S$4.50 / Large: S$6.90) features a gula melaka soft serve base, lined with pandan sauce and topped with desiccated coconut, coconut flakes and even more pandan sauce. Despite all the different elements added, the soft serve was extremely silky and creamy without being too sweet.

The Nutella Brownies Cheesecake Soft Serve (Regular: S$4.50 / Large: S$6.90) comes with a generous swirl of Nutella soft serve, topped with rich chocolate sauce and chocolate malt, and sprinkled with brownie crumbs. This was simply chocolate heaven in a cup, what more could we ask for?

This Muslim-owned hidden gem requires just a tad more effort to find but do not let its simple facade deceive you. We were absolutely mind-blown by their solid Nutella Cheesecake (S$8). The balance in texture between the smooth top, creamy middle and crispy biscuit base is surreal! Another Nutella must-try is the Nutella Snowy Brioche. One word—irresistible.

For those who are not fans of this heavenly hazelnut spread (are there even any?), fret not for there are other tantalising options for you to sink your teeth into. Mixed Fruits Pavlova, Thai Milk Tea Cheesecake and Pandan Gula Melaka slices are just some to keep your eyes peeled for.

Take note though, their bakes do sell out fast. The earlier you are there, the more options you have (and the bigger the dilemma).

With over 100 cupcake flavours till date, the owners at Fluff Bakery are not afraid to experiment. This humble Muslim-owned cupcakery started back in 2013 and has garnered a huge following, explaining the frequent snaking lines during peak hours.

Coveted crowd faves include Durian Chendol, Triple Milo and Speculoos, with signatures such as Salted Caramel and Nutella Red Velvet that are constantly a big hit. At S$4 a piece, indulge in the spectacular burst of flavour with every bite.

This Muslim-owned artisan European bakery is the brainchild of the team behind Fika Swedish Cafe and Bistro. Though it focuses more on takeaways, you will not be disappointed by the plethora of authentic loaves, pastries, tarts and cakes.

The main star: Swedish Semla buns (S$5.90). We love how the fluffy buns are generously filled with almond paste and light, fluffy whipped cream. The Blackforest Croissant puts up a tough fight with its decadent raspberry jam filling and generous chocolate shavings garnishing the top. You will have to try them out and be your own judge for this one.

#5 KUMOYA [HALAL]

As with every Japanese eatery, presentation and aesthetics are key. This is evident in Kumoya, a quaint cafe that doles out too-pretty-to-eat desserts. It becomes somewhat a sin to dig into the delectable treats. The well-crafted eclairs (S$3/piece) and kawaii yoghurt parfaits (S$15.90) will leave you squealing with delight. Alternatively, the colourful macarons (S$2.80/piece) and sweet pancakes (S$14.90) will leave your bellies full and hearts content.

The Yuzu Yoghurt Parfait is one you should look out for; the sublime combination of the light souffle cheesecake with the plain soft-serve yoghurt and yuzu sauce is sensational.

Located next to Konditori, Lickety Ice cream & Waffles offers egglet waffles adorned with rich ice cream and yummy toppings. Picture this: a waffle bouquet sitting pretty in a pink pastel-hued paper holder. The plus points of this Muslim-owned outlet includes being able to concoct your own combination of waffles, topping and ice cream.

For S$8.90, you get a waffle with a scoop of ice cream and a topping of your choice. Top up S$3 and you can upgrade to a waffle with double scoops of ice cream and two toppings. Between the red velvet waffle and the buttermilk one, we find the former more appealing. Of course, if you cannot decide, tuck into the half-half option instead.

As for ice cream flavours, challenge your palate to take on the more unconventional picks—Taro Yam & Coconut, Root Beer Float, Earl Grey & Fig and Cotton Candy Bubble Gum.

Durian lovers, you can jazz up your soft-serve with creamy durian pulp for an additional dollar.

The layers go like this—chendol soft-serve followed by Gula Melaka syrup and another swirl of soft-serve that is eventually sprinkled with green pandan jelly and coconut flakes. You get one final drizzle of that sweet Gula Melaka sauce.

Watch out for their weekly specials! We have seen Snickers, Ondeh Ondeh, Mint Choco Chip Crumbs, Thai Mango Coconut and good ol’ Bandung. What fancy option could they be introducing next?
