Centred around the last bit of March to the first half of April, visitors can join locals in the traditional custom of hanami (cherry blossom viewing), and experience the splendour that is the ephemeral beauty of Japan’s national flower.

To aid those looking to experience this brilliant display, we will share our 2020 Cherry Blossom Forecast for the 12 most popular Japanese cities to enjoy the festivities at. Because of the effects of climate change and general deviations in year-to-year weather patterns, these estimates may change closer to the blooming season.

More than just a leisure activity, hanami holds a much more profound symbolism to the Japanese. With its significance rooted in Buddhist themes, Japanese cherry blossoms act as a metaphor for the beauty of transient mortality, juxtaposing the resplendence of the flowers to their tragically short existence.

Furthermore, as a herald for the arrival of spring and the start of the Japanese calendar year, locals view the flowering of the sakura with a hope that their new year will bloom with new possibilities as well.

As these delicate blossoms are notoriously short-lived and prone to shifts in weather patterns, it is imperative that travellers time their visits carefully if they do not wish to miss potential viewings. From the official kaika (first blossom) date, the flowers remain on the trees for a brief couple of weeks before withering. Even more fleeting is the peak viewing period for the blossoms, which is from just before mankai (full bloom) and until the falling of the petals.

As a general note, the cherry blossom front moves northwards during the season. Thus, even if changes in weather patterns shorten blooms in certain areas, fret not, for there are still ample viewing opportunities in other parts of Japan!

FUKUOKA

The largest city in the Kyushu prefecture, Fukuoka is located at the southern tip of Japan and is one of the first locations to see the blooming of cherry blossoms. A confluence of the traditional and modern, Fukuoka is a bustling metropolis that houses many serene shrines and picturesque parks.

Best Places in Fukuoka for Cherry Blossom Viewing:

1. Fukuoka Castle (Maizuru Park) – In Maizuru Park, visitors can enjoy viewing the blooms from within the remnants of a 17th-century castle, or meander through multiple walking paths under the canopy of cherry trees and a photo-worthy tunnel of flowers.
2. Nishi Park – Listed among the top hundred best spots for cherry blossom viewing in Japan, this hillside park provides a panoramic view of Hakata Bay framed by a sea of pale-pink flowering sakura trees.
3. Uminonakamichi Seaside Park – Located on a narrow peninsula across the bay from central Fukuoka, Uminonakamichi contains around two thousand cherry trees, and houses multiple flower parks as well. A lesser-known vacation spot, Fukushima is an ideal location for those looking for a nature-themed escape away from the masses of Japan’s more populous cities. Travellers can expect beautiful volcanic landscapes and hot springs, and for those looking to exit the main city, quaint castle towns and charming ski-resorts.

Best Places in Fukushima for Cherry Blossom Viewing:

1. Hanamiyama Park – Literally named the “flower-viewing mountain”, the park is one of the best places to view cherry blossoms at. Visitors can amble along the walking paths to admire the sakura-blanketed slopes in the south, or head to the viewpoint at the top for a bird’s-eye view of Fukushima and the Azuma Mountains.
2. Natsui River Senbonzakura – As per its namesake, this river is lined by a thousand elegant cherry trees on both sides. For a more immerse experience, visitors can meander along the banks to take in the scenic views of the area’s waterfalls and clear streams under the cover of sakura.

The first thing that comes to mind when we think of Kobe is Kobe beef from the region’s iconic black cattle. Beyond the decadent treat, the city offers other unique attractions such as a vast collection of famous onsen spots, and lively geiko performances.

1. Shukugawa Park – One of the best spots for sakura viewing in the Kansai region, Shukugawa Park is quiet riverside park housing 1,700 cherry trees. The crowd descends mainly during the April season, so be warned: go early in the day if you wish to get a good spot for the city’s Sakura Matsuri festival!
2. Okamoto Minami Park – Maintained by the Kobe city government, the park is built on the land of famed cherry tree collector and conservator, Shintaro Sasabe. Every Spring, the world flocks to Japan for hanami (the act of cherry blossoms appreciation). The city will be coloured pink; cherry and plum blossom trees line the streets and the entire city is magically transformed into a flower paradise.

Tokyo, in particular, plays host to a big crowd of visitors from all over the world who bask in the beauty of the blooms. It is a phenomenal experience, and it is a sheer sight to behold. One cannot simply rely on pictures to see the beauty; being in Japan for hanami is essential to take in all the beauty and to witness the splendour of Spring.

There are many spots in Tokyo for hanami, and as much as there will be crowds, it will be worth your while. So if you’re heading to Tokyo this Spring, here are some popular spots where cherry blossom trees can be found in abundance.

SHINJUKU GYOEN NATIONAL GARDEN

This is undisputedly the most popular cherry blossom destination in Tokyo where cherry blossom trees can be seen at every corner. There is an entrance fee but it will be well worth the money spent.

Within Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, there are different types of sakura trees, and in Spring, the whole park is livened up with pinks of different hues. It is also a common spot for picnics and photoshoots.

YOYOGI PARK

Just farther up from Meiji-jingu is Yoyogi Park, another crowded cherry blossom spot during Spring because the locals love having picnics under the sakura trees. Expect over 600 sakura trees that boast mainly pale pink blooms. Food stands are also available within the park so you don’t have to bring your own.

AOYAMA CEMETERY

Do not be spooked; this cemetery is actually a calm sanctuary and during Spring, it actually gets pretty crowded so you’d never be alone. There are hundreds of cherry blossom trees lining the straight road that cuts through the cemetery.

It is, after all, a graveyard so be mindful of your activity and noise level here. The locals usually keep their hanami activities quiet so as to respect the dead.

UENO PARK

Ueno Park is a family-friendly park in Tokyo that has more than just sakura. There is a whole row of street stalls where you can get a variety of Japanese snacks such as crab sticks, grilled octopus, takoyaki etc.

At the end of the park is a small pond where you can rent boats in the shape of swans. You’d see families peddling the boats and the kids really do love the sight of “swans” in the ponds against the hundreds of sakura trees!

CHIDORIGA-FUCHI

This is our favourite spot for hanami in Tokyo. Chidoriga-fuchi used to be pretty under the radar, but in recent years, it has gained popularity mainly from its boat rental. You might have seen pictures of people on the iconic blue boat, riding through the river that’s densely lined with sakura trees on both ends. It is a magnificent sight and we always return to this spot when we find ourselves in Tokyo for Spring. Be prepared to wait in line for hours for the boat, though.

Hanami doesn’t stop there. Take a stroll in the park where you find even more sakura trees, many of which are weeping kind where the cherry blossoms hang really low, making it the perfect backdrop for your selfies. But please do not pluck the flowers!

KOISHIKAWA KORAKUEN

Koishikawa Korakuen is one of Japan’s most popular traditional Japanese landscape garden. It was built in the early Edo period (1600-1867). Koishikawa is the district in which the garden is located in, and the garden was named ‘Korakuen’ after a poem encouraging a ruler to enjoy pleasure only after achieving happiness for his people.

The garden features several early blooming weeping cherry trees around the garden’s entrance gate, most prominently a weeping cherry blossom tree that blooms a few days earlier than all the other trees.

ASAKUSA

Asakusa is another extremely popular spot in Tokyo for hanami. The landmark Senso-ji has sakura trees lining the front of its Hozomon Gate at Nakamise Street. It is not uncommon to see locals strolling the streets of Asakusa in their kimonos. If you’d love to don one, there are several rental shops in the vicinity too.

With Tokyo Sky Tree just behind Asakusa, you can also get photos of cherry blossoms “draping” the famous Tokyo tower.

SUMIDA PARK

Farther up from Asakusa is Sumida Park, a common spot for hanami for visitors to Asakusa. Sumida Park stretches for a few hundred meters along both sides of Sumida River and hanami can also be enjoyed from boats that cruise the river.

Food stands are also available within Sumida Park.

MEGURO PARK

This is another perennial favourite of ours. Meguro River is exceptionally stunning both in the day and at night, with more than 800 trees lining the canal that stretches a few hundred meters. The trees will all light up when night falls.

There isn’t a designated spot for hanami but there are many “intervals” along the canal where you can stop for photos.

ASUKAYAMA PARK

This hilltop public park is one of Tokyo’s oldest hanami spots. It is extremely popular among locals and today, several hundred trees dot the park, hence creating many picnic spots.

The trees here also light up in the evening.

Fukuoka is one of Japan’s most populated cities and a popular tourist destination in Japan. Fukuoka sits on one of the most scenic islands of Japan, Kyushu. Every year, Hanami greets Fukuoka with beautiful pink blossoms.

Best places in Fukuoka to view cherry blossoms:
1. Fukuoka Castle | Maizuru Park – Over a thousand trees line the ruins of Fukuokoa castle. This is the ideal place to go for a romantic stroll while viewing these gorgeous blossoms.
2. Uminonakamichi Seaside Park – An estimated two thousand cherry blossom trees are planted at the Uminonakamichi Seaside Park.

#3 HOKKAIDO

As one of Japan’s most popular islands, Hokkaido sits on the north with a cooler climate. Hokkaido is famed for the ski resorts, onsen and exceptionally fresh seafood.

1. Maruyama Park | Hokkaido Shrine – The park is filled with endless cherry blossom trees. However, the path towards the Hokkaido Shrine in the park is probably the most scenic spot for photography and hanami for many trees line the walkway.
2. Moerenuma Park – This is not just any other park. Moerenuma Park was designed by the artist Isamu Noguchi and it is a masterpiece in its own rights. Cherry blossom trees bloom all around the park.

Besides the food, Kobe has scenic mountains that make for great photography opportunities, especially in Spring.

1. Philosopher’s Path – This is one of the best and top-rated hanami spots in all of Japan. Hundreds of trees line the path that connects Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) with the vicinity of Nanzenji.

1. Shinjuku Gyoen – Arguably the best park in Tokyo for hanami, Shinjuku Gyoen should be on everyone’s itinerary. The huge park is filled with trees of pink and white cherry blossoms and locals enjoy a good picnic under the many cherry blossom trees.
2. Ueno Park – Ueno Park is bustling with life during Spring for it is another great spot in Tokyo for hanami. Over a thousand trees line the park and people hold “hanami parties” to celebrate this annual occasion.
3. Chidorigafushi – This is our favourite part of Tokyo during the cherry blossom season. Rent a boat and row down the river with sakura trees lining both sides. There is also a long pedestrian path with thousands of sakura trees. In other words, plenty of photo opportunities and surreal moments!

#2 FUKUOKA

Cherry blossoms period: 25 March 2017 to 10 April 2017

Fukuoka is located on the Northern shore of Japan’s Kyushu Island and is most popularly known for their ancient temples, beaches and trendy shopping malls.

The Fukuoka Castle is the recommended spot to view the cherry blossoms. Some other spots to admire the flowers are Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, Nishi Park and the Atago Shrine.

#3 HIROSHIMA

Cherry blossoms period: 29 March 2017 to 12 April 2017

After the infamous and disastrous atomic bomb destroyed most of Hiroshima, a lot of effort was put into rebuilding the city to what it is today.

You can visit the Peace Park, then head down to Shukkeien Garden and the Hiroshima Castle. These places and sites are surrounded by cherry blossom trees and are very popular for hanami.

#4 HOKKAIDO

Cherry blossoms period: 29 April 2017 to 5 May 2017

Hokkaido is the largest prefecture of Japan. And it is huge, with plenty of cherry blossoms trees all around.

The one place you must go to is Hakodate’s Goryokaku, a star-shaped fort with its grounds entirely filled with hanami spots. And there is Matsumae Castle, the only castle in Hokkaido but it is stunning in Spring with all the sakura.

#5 KYOTO

Cherry blossoms period: 29 March 2017 to 12 April 2017

Kyoto is a place to explore all the historical and cultural wonders of Japan, and cherry blossom trees are almost all over the ancient capital. It is one of the best Japanese destinations for hanami.

Maruyama-koen is undoubtly the most popular spot, followed by Kyoto Gosho (Imperial Palace Park). Shirakawa (the most popular street in Gion) is always stunning too with its lines of cherry blossoms trees.

#6 NAGOYA

Cherry blossoms period: 26 March 2017 to 10 April 2017

Nagoya is Japan’s fourth most populated city and a place where culture fuses with art.

The world flocks to Yamazakigawa Riverside, where these cherry blossoms bloom stunningly on both sides of the river. But of course, the blooms at Nagoya Castle is one sight to behold too. Tsuruma Park is also Nagoya’s best city park for hanami.

#7 NARA

Cherry blossoms period: 28 March 2017 to 11 April 2017

As one of the most popular tourist spots in Japan, Nara is located just an hour away from the city of Osaka and Kyoto.

Nara Park may be famous for their deer, but it is also home to about 1700 cherry blossom trees all around and is Nara’s best sakura viewing spot. To catch a more historical and scenic view, head down to the Heijo Palace, where it is surrounded by more sakura trees.

#8 TOKYO

Cherry blossoms period: 26 March 2017 to 11 April 2017

Tokyo, oh Tokyo; our favourite Japanese city. There are endless things to do her—shop until you drop, eat to your heart’s content and sip coffee all day every day.

And in April, weeping sakura fill the city with an irresistible charm, and it was one of the best things we had ever experienced. All your hanami dreams will come true at Shinjuku Gyoen, Yoyogi Park, Meguro River, Ueno Park and Aoyama Cemetry.

#9 OKINAWA

Cherry blossoms period: Mid January to Week 2 of February

Okinawa is an island located in the Southernmost part of Japan. It has a generally more tropical climate due to its geographical position.

The Hanami period starts the earliest here before it moves up north. And its cherry blososm trees are quite unlike what you’d expect—not the pale pink flowers, but brighter, rounder blossoms called Hikan-Zakura (which grows best in warm, humid climate). View these breathtaking flowers at Nago Chuo Park, Nakijin Castle or Yogi Park.

#1 FUKUOKA

Cherry blossom period: 20 March 2016 to 3 April 2016

Japanese city Fukuoka’s geographical location is an interesting one; it is actually nearer to Seoul than it is to Tokyo. Fukuoka is also renowned for tonkotsu ramen so do not miss out on piping hot bowls of this delicacy while you are there.

Katsumaya Park, where Fukouka Castle is, is a great place to check out the cherry blossoms in full bloom. Alternatively, you can take a leisure stroll around Nishi Park too.

#2 HIROSHIMA

Cherry blossom period: 25 March 2016 to 5 April 2016

The captivating pink sakuras at Hiroshima Castle and historic garden Shukkei-en make it hard to believe that Hiroshima was severely destroyed by the impact of an atomic bomb in 1945′s World War II. While the city has been restored to prosperity over the past decades, one is still encouraged to pay their respects at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

The eastern edge of Hiroshima Memorial Park also features picturesque cherry blossom trees.

#3 KYOTO

Cherry blossom period: 27 March 2016 to 15 April 2016

Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, is a cultural city renowned for their age-old cultural practices and traditional monuments. Early birds should visit Kiyomizudera Temple and Maruyama Park to catch the sakuras while immersing themselves in Kyoto’s cultural splendour.

If you are visiting Kyoto only during the second week of April, we recommend you to make your way down to Heian Shrine and Nijojo Castle to admire the Yaebeni weeping cherry trees.

#4 TOKYO

Visitors can catch up on their retail therapy, gourmet food and also treat themselves to the magnificent views of cherry blossoms at Tokyo, one of our favourite cities in the world!

If you are dropping by Tokyo in March, head over to National Park Shinjuku Gyoen, Shinto Shrine Yushima Tenjin and Ueno Park with your cameras! For those who are visiting in April, you can embark on an hour-long journey away from the multifaceted metropolis to the base of Mount Takao for a tranquil scenic view of the blooming cherry trees.

With approximately 5000 cherry blossom trees, Kema Sakuranomiya Park is truly the place to be at during the cherry blossom periods. With that impressive number, one has to bear in mind that there are several different species and every breed blooms at a different time. From pale pink to baby pink, visitors get to witness a myriad shades of pink.

Osaka Castle and Expo 70 Commemorative Park also provide equally enchanting views, and these are highly popular spots for Hanami too.
