The capital city of Malaysia is replete with eateries that will delight even the most sophisticated of gourmands. On the other end of the spectrum, Kuala Lumpur is also perfect for sampling local street food steeped in rich culture—this offers you a wholly novel experience from simply dining at regular indoor food joints.

A visit to Kuala Lumpur is no doubt incomplete without visiting one of these ubiquitous “pasar malams” that reflects the Southeast Asian lifestyle. From a plethora of unique delicacies, super cheap clothing, household knick-knacks to funky accessories and souvenirs, the night bazaars here are absolutely happening (and worth tackling). Do remember that bargain is de rigueur.

Are you ready to discover and appreciate the melting pot of Kuala Lumpur? Select a day, brace through the lively night markets and pamper your taste buds while you are at it.

Known as Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, Jalan Petaling is a vibrant street where peak hour starts just before sunset and vendors start opening up their stalls for business. The massive market spreads across Jalan Pudu and Jalan Sultan.

It is common to see locals and tourists bargaining at Petaling Street as there is stiff competition arising from the scores of shops selling souvenirs, electronics and even fake designer items.

In the midst of shopping, fill your tummy with delicious street food you can find at Petaling Street. Here are 10 Street Food To Look Out For At Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur.

#1 BEEF NOODLES

Ask any local and they will tell you to try beef noodles when you are in Kuala Lumpur. Seats at this beef noodles stall fill up fast so you really do have to reach earlier to beat the crowd. Those who are feeling adventurous can opt for beef innards.

#2 APAM BALIK

First off, you should know that Apam Balik is a traditional Malaysian street snack that all tourists must try. It is essentially a sweet peanut pancake with a soft interior and crispy sides.

#3 PRAWN NOODLES

Prawn mee is considered a staple in Malaysia and you can find that in Petaling Street. What constitutes a bowl of delicious prawn noodles is its spicy and rich broth which is boiled with prawn shells. It usually comes with prawns, sliced pork, egg and fried shallots.

#4 LOK LOK

There is almost always a queue at lok lok stalls where you will find skewers containing everything, from meat to vegetables and seafood. Choose what you fancy from the wide selection and watch the stall vendor cook or fry your food in front of your eyes. There are also plenty of dipping sauce!

#5 ZI CHAR

Those with family may want to consider going to a zi char stall for dinner to sample a range of local dishes. Their menus usually encompass traditional hawker favourites that come with a distinct wok hei flavour.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

And can we just take a second to appreciate how adorable the foam kitten is? The skilled barista took less than five minutes to craft this out for us.

On the other hand, the Cheesecake (RM10/S$3.30) was like any average ones you can find outside—moist and comes with a simple biscuit base. We would say to skip the food and focus on the drinks instead, which is what Coffee Amo is known for.

If you are looking for something more exotic, go for the Kenya PB Kirimara, Ethiopia Sidamo Bensa or Panama Auromar Geisha.

Besides the famous Petaling Street, one other well-known food street in Kuala Lumpur is Jalan Alor. Located right in the heart of the city, Jalan Alor comes to life after 6pm. This is when you will see many vendors setting up their food stall and seafood restaurants at the side filling up.

The lively food street has plenty of options for you to choose from—be it light street snacks to local favourites and even Chinese-style zi char dishes. No matter what you are craving for, Jalan Alor has it all!

So for those who are heading to Kuala Lumpur, here are 8 Street Food You Should Try At Jalan Alor.

#1 HANDMADE DIM SUM

Choose your favourite types of dim sum or have one each! Customers are given a pair of tongs and a plastic container at this dim sum stall in Jalan Alor.

The concept is similar to yong tau foo where you pay a certain amount of money for a fixed number of items.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

In between lightly toasted bread slices is a wonderful combination of fresh green lettuce, tomato, cheese, buttery scrambled eggs and a generous portion of light and fluffy chicken floss.

Other homemade sandwiches offered by the breakfast bar include Black Sesame Toast (RM9.30/ S$3.10), Wholemeal Toast (RM9.30/ S$3.10) and Milky White Toast (RM8.90/ S$3).

You can also include add-ons such as sunny side egg, hashbrown, chicken ham, cheese sausage and more.

Of course, you should not miss out on their signature pure fruit juices as well. Choose from 12 different fruit juice options (RM8.90/ S$3) or go for breakfast classics such as Black Coffee, Milk Coffee and Mocha.

Acme Bar & Coffee at The Troika is located in Kuala Lumpur City Centre. The stylish cafe caters mostly to tourists and professionals working around the area and its sophisticated interior exudes an air of elegance. Yes, it is one of those places to see and be seen.

Think floor-to-ceiling windows where natural light is filtered in, clean lines and comfortable cushioned chairs to encourage customers to linger on for a leisure chat with their companions.

It is a great place to spend anniversaries and special occasions if you are in Kuala Lumpur.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

If there is one dessert you must try at Acme Bar & Coffee, this has to be it. The moist brownie was warm and rich in chocolate, and complementing the ice cream wonderfully was the generous serving of huge oreo chunks.

Acme Bar & Coffee’s Cappuccino (RM15++/ S$5++) tasted just like any good cappuccino you would find elsewhere. We liked that it was creamy with a hint of bitterness from the espresso. Sugar cubes are given at the side for those who prefer it to be sweeter.

Going there for their mains? You can choose from the Baked Seabass Parcel & Rice (RM35++/ S$11.70++), Grilled Marinated Lamb Shoulder (RM57++/ S$19++) and a range of pasta dishes.

Desserts options include Light-As-Air-Pavlova (RM19++/ S$6.30++), Orange Lava Cake (RM17++/ S$5.70++) and an array of sliced cakes at the counter.

There is no lack of good cafes along Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur and besides the popular Merchant’s Lane, one up and coming dining establishment joining the cafe scene is Chocha Foodstore.

Although the cafe is housed in a rundown building, we fell in love with it at first sight with the charming retro interior and impeccable attention to details. Beyond that, food on Chocha Foodstore’s menu consists of local favourites that come with a creative twist.

It is a fantastic place for a casual lunch or tea with your friends.

Upon entering the cafe, visitors are greeted with old wooden tables, exposed light bulbs and an open staircase that leads up to the second floor. Do note that guests are not allowed to go up to the next level.

Every corner of Chocha Foodstore makes for great OOTD backgrounds which you are unlikely to find elsewhere.

Head to the cafe early if you would like to choose your own seating, for it gets very busy during lunch time. Those who are seated at the long tables in the courtyard can expect to share the table with other diners and you can even make a friend or two.

Duck Confit Rice (RM26++/ S$8.70++) at Chocha Foodstore comes with generous slices of juicy duck meat accompanied with a slightly overdone ajitama egg and plenty of vegetables. The addition of chewy barley rice gave it an interesting texture when mixed with white rice.

And saving the best for the last—the Cincalok Fried Chicken (RM26++/ S$8.70++). This fragrant crispy chicken really deserves a special mention because of how well it tasted both on its own and together with fresh salsa.

Spice lovers have to polish off the homemade tomato chutney which gives the chicken an extra spicy kick.

Every January, more than 800,000 religious devotees will congregate at Batu Caves to celebrate the annual religious Thaipusam festival.

From PULP by Papa Palheta to Merchant’s Lane, here is our guide to Cafes and Coffee Shops in Kuala Lumpur. Do share with us your favourites in Kuala Lumpur too!

This Kuala Lumpur trip has been long overdue as I was supposed to go up earlier to visit my friends and the Malaysian Food Bloggers. Can you actually believe that my previous trip was in July last year? If you like food, you will love KL. The city is like a foodie heaven, there are so many restaurants, cafes, eateries and street food everywhere.

It’s difficult to limit this post with just 10 choices since there are so many good food in KL But after stuffing myself with food for three days, here’s my 10 Things To Eat in Kuala Lumpur.

For the three days in Kuala Lumpur, all I had was food, food, food and more food. I’m not kidding. We started early in the morning everyday, and we ate all the way until night, and the cycle repeated itself the next day. It’s probably a good thing that KL is a big place and we could try to digest the food in between the traveling time.

Find your way to Petaling Jaya – just for Marufuku Udon

I’m not a fan of the Japanese Udon, but I actually fell in love with Marufuku, a new Japanese Udon restaurant located at the trendy Jaya One in Petaling Jaya. It is kind of difficult to describe Jaya One, the place is like a dining destination with lots of nice restaurants and hip bars. I immediately thought of Dempsey Hill & Holland Village, but my friends told me that it isn’t a good comparison since Jaya One isn’t as high-end, and also because there are plenty of similar dining clusters in Petaling Jaya and the other parts of Kuala Lumpur.

Anyway, I digressed. Marufuku converted me into a new Udon fan with its sublime interpretation of the noodle. My first reaction was: everything’s so cheap & affordable (even for local standards)! A bowl of Udon is around RM7-8, and each stick of the fantastic Yakitori is only RM2-3.

We were oblivious to everyone else in the restaurant, concentrating only on the bowl of udon in front of us. It looked simple and healthy. We picked up a pair of chopsticks, slurped the first mouthful of noodles, and everything disappeared in a flash. The bowl of udon was gone, and we continued the party with the arrival of sake, karaage, kakiage tempura, and countless sticks of Yakitori (momo). We ate, and ate, and sigh, and wished that dinner would never end.

Have the best Nasi Lemak in Kuala Lumpur

It’s really difficult/impossible to pinpoint the best Nasi Lemak in Kuala Lumpur since there are so many good Nasi Lemak shops around. Kenny brought me to Damansara Uptown, and there, I had one of the best Nasi Lemak (RM7) at Village Park. The rice was very fragrant, and you could taste the texture of every grain. The chill was spicy and addictive, and it came with a huge chicken drumstick. Everything was just so tasty! If not for the fact that I was trying to save my stomach for lunch, I’d have ordered a second serving.

I heard so much about the cakes by A Slice of Heaven by Just Heavenly Bakery from the KL Food Bloggers. After the dinner at Marafuku, we went to get desserts. The funny thing is, I don’t remember much of it.

Dessert was a blur of sugar: we wrecked havoc on the seemingly innocent Red Velvet Cupcake – it was delicious. We proceeded to destroy the Cherry Cheesecake next, a heavy and cheesy cake topped with sourish red cherries. Under the influence of gin tonic and sake, I took a small nibble of the famous Just Heavenly’s Chocolate durian cake. The last dessert Death by Chocolate, was essentially a chocolate mousse cake, it was all mousse and no cake.

If I have a Cafe next time, it will be very similar to The Haute Food Co Cafe at Plaza Damas. Located at a lazy corner in Plaza Damas, The Haute Food Co Cafe serves very simple and unpretentious comfort food: sandwiches, pasta, coffee, breakfast food, and all the lovely desserts. We had the afternoon tea special (after 3.30pm), for RM16, you get a slice of cake with hot coffee/tea. There’s nothing better than having a slice of Chocolate hazelnut cake, tiramisu, sticky date pudding with ice cream, and a cup of coffee, on a Sunday afternoon.

Eat as many Ramly Burger as you can

This, is the burger. Do you really need me to elaborate on the Ramly burger? Eat, as many, as you can. Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.

Have Breakfast at Yut Kee, the oldest (& most popular) Hainanese coffee shop in KL

If you ever find yourself having breakfast at Yut Kee, please do everyone a favor and order the Roti Babi. It is a sandwich made from white bread and stuffed with shredded pork, onions, and crabmeat; dipped in egg and deep fried. Becky and Marcky ordered the Lam Mee which I felt was too heavy for breakfast, but the belachan sauce that came along with it was really hot and spicy. I had high hopes for the Hainanese Pork Chops since Yut Kee is a Hainanese coffee shop. Served with lots of onions, and bits of mixed vegetables, their pork chops were drizzled with a brown gravy instead of the sweet sauce that I was familiar with.

And then of course, we had the kaya toast & half boiled eggs. Unlike the ones that we get in Singapore, they do not toast the bread with any spread inside. So you get the full experience of spreading the kaya and the butter, and watching it melt slowly within the toast. And then, you eat it.

Try an exotic cuisine when you are overseas, try Nepalese food.

I think I have a very adventurous life when it comes to food. Who will have thought that I will get my first experience of Nepalese food in Kuala Lumpur? Okay maybe I shouldn’t be surprised since I also had my first taste of Lebanese food in Sydney. We didn’t order a lot of food as this was our second stop of the food trail for the day.

The Chettinad Banana Leaf Rice Experience

It was quite an experience to step inside Vishal for the Chettinad banana leaf rice. They have a system where diners sit along the table on one side, while the staff serve from the other side. I unknowingly committed the mistake of sitting on the wrong side until Ciki and Jon told me. Order as much as you want, and finish off the rice with a glass of mango lassi.

Go to Toast & Roast for the Best Char Siew in KL

“OMG, the char siew is so good!” I can’t remember how many times I repeated that, as I was trying to stop myself from sighing aloud. If you are the type who do not take fatty meat, I’m sorry, but the Toast & Roast’s Char Siew is definitely not something that you will enjoy.

The Char Siew was fat, and meaty, and sinful, and tasty. OMG, it’s so good!

Stand by the roadside and queue for Mr Chiam’s Pisang Goreng & Fritters

Pisang Goreng (fried banana fritter) is a snack food mostly found throughout Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Mr Chiam operates from a small kiosk by the roadside, and besides pisang goreng, they also have kuih bakul (fried Nian Gao), curry puff, and fried sesame ball. If you are going there, remember to cross the street for the famous ice kacang/chendol place.

Seafood Feast at Robson Heights Seafood Restaurant

I was actually feeling very full after a whole day of eating. But when the food arrived on the table, I was hungry again! The worthy mentions are the salted egg yoke sotong, and the incredible pork ribs. Go with a bigger group, and order more food!

It’s killing me just by looking at the photos, I need to go back to KL soon and come up with another 10 Things to Eat in Kuala Lumpur. What are some of the other must-try items you will include for the list of best food in KL?
