Sembawang Confectionery is a humble old-school bakery tucked away at the ground floor of a HDB estate at Beach Road, not Sembawang. This bakery has been rolling out freshly baked bread and cakes since the 1960s. Best of all, their goods are free from preservatives.

During the short time we spent at Sembawang Confectionery, the bakery was visited by plenty of regulars which only goes to show how well-loved their bakes are. So take this as your sign to drop by Sembawang Confectionery if you haven’t visited them before.

Sembawang Confectionery carries a wide array of baked goods for your picking. From individually wrapped buns, loaves of bread, kueh, pastries and nostalgic Western cakes, there is something for everyone here.

To top it off, customers can take their time to select their favourites because Sembawang Confectionery is known for their friendly staff who are patient and customer-centric.

When we asked their staff to recommend us some items, she shared that the Cream Horn (S$2) was one of their top-sellers and we witnessed this in person too. Just as we ordered the Cream Horn, someone dropped by to pick up an order and there just wasn’t enough left on the shelf to pack for them. Say what?

Whilst we found the pastry of the Cream Horn decently flaky, the cream filling leaned towards being more of a butter-based cream rather than fresh cream. So if you’re intending to purchase some Cream Horns for yourself, do note that the Cream Horn is best enjoyed fresh instead of being kept in the fridge for later occasion.

Another interesting find at Sembawang Confectionery is the Pineapple Leaf Pie (S$1.50), a twist on the well-loved pineapple tart. Put simply, the Pineapple Leaf Pie shares the same concept as the Bunny Shaped Pineapple Tarts that you’d see during Chinese New Year i.e., a crumbly buttery shell filled with pineapple paste.

Whilst the taste of the Pineapple Leaf Pie was decent for the price, we’d have liked the pastry to be slightly saltier for a deeper flavour.

The best part about all these traditional bakeries is their range of nostalgic old-school Western Heritage Cakes (S$1.80 per slice), especially the “Traffic Light” cake. Sembawang Confectionery’s Heritage Cakes come in chocolate and vanilla flavours, and each slice of cake is carefully decorated with different designs.

Taste-wise, the Heritage Cakes were moist and the buttercream was fresh and light. But if we were asked about what would make the cakes better, we would have liked the cakes to have a slightly fluffier texture.

Some other treats that you can pick up at Sembawang Confectionery include the Egg Tarts (S$1.50) and Custard Cream Puff (S$1.50). Although they weren’t outstanding, they would make a lovely and affordable afternoon snack for the family.

Helmed by Chef Mohamed Al-Matin who has previously worked at Noma, Restaurant Andre, Black Star Pastry, Zumbo, Le Matin Patisserie first started as an online pastry shop during Circuit Breaker last year, and it has since opened a physical shop at Raeburn Park earlier this year.

Other than the Le Matin Basics which featured 5 pastries, we also tried the Savoury Box: Assemblag that came with 4 savoury pastries including the new Lamb & Red Wine Pie and Wagyu & Bone Marrow Sausage Roll.

Each pastry box from Le Matin Patisserie comes with 4 or 6 pastries and each drop can vary in accordance to the technique and seasonal supplies.

Le Matin Basics (S$34)

Kouign Amann

Pain Au Chocolat

Lacto-fermented Plum Galette

Brioche Feuilette

Bread and Butter Pudding

Out of the five pastries from Le Matin Basics box, we loved the Kouign Amann, Pain Au Chocolat and Brioche Feuilette.

Laminated with lots of butter, the Brioche Feuilette—a croissant-brioche hybrid—was truly outstanding with an extremely buttery and crispy pastry. The signature Kouign Amann was equally buttery, flaky and had subtle hints of vanilla.

Chocolate lovers will love the Pain Au Chocolat which was stuffed with Valrhona dark chocolate and came with a molten chocolatey center.

Savoury Box: Assemblage (S$58)

Lamb & Red Wine Pie

Wagyu & Bone Marrow Sausage Roll

Escargot Escargot

Beef Tongue and Cheese Croissant Panini

The Savoury Box that comes with 4 savoury pastries including the new Lamb & Red Wine Pie and Wagyu & Bone Marrow Sausage Roll. The savoury pastry that stood out the most was the Beef Tongue and Cheese Croissant Panini. The croissant was layered with Beef Tongue and Wagyu Bresaola, a mix of 4 different cheeses, as well as pickled rose petals, butternut and horseradish.

How about escargot in a pastry? Le Matin Patisserie shaped the traditional croissant like a snail and filled it with escargots from France. This was the perfect balance of savoury and sweet.

You can also add on cold brews to your pastry boxes and they include Black Coffee (S$5), White Coffee (S$5), Oat Milk Coffee (S$7) and Chocolate (S$7).

Le Matin Patisserie offers Island-wide courier delivery at a flat-rate fee of S$10 for a single location on the same date. Enjoy free delivery with a minimun order of S$80.

DEFYING GRAVITY FLOATING BEER CAN CAKE

Let’s start off with their customised cakes, shall we? They are what made Bob The Baker Boy famous, and our dear Bob deserves all the recognition for the superb hand-crafted cakes that have made birthdays memorable for countless people.

For the fickle-minded ones, you are going to be in trouble because they have hundreds of designs for you to choose from. And everything looks so cute and realistic, it’s impossible to just select one. We feel you, really. Even if you are a decisive person, the range will leave you mind-boggled, even if it’s just for a while.

Being the alcoholics we are, we eventually decided on this gravity-defying beer cake. We went with a classic flavour that will please the crowd—Belgian Chocolate cake covered with pearl sprayed vanilla buttercream, and layered with zero-added sugar chocolate custard.

The layered cake was decadent and satisfying with every bite. You know how some cakes look way better than they taste? Not for this. This looked every bit photogenic and Instagram-worthy, and tasted legit. We are already dreaming of our next customised cake by them!

STRAWBERRIES & CREAM CAKE

Adapted from the ever-so-popular strawberries shortcake, expect moist and velvety vanilla layers for this cake. Slice your fork into cake that’s fluffy like the clouds, filled with freshly whipped Chantilly and farm-picked sliced strawberries.

Money may not buy us happiness, but it can buy us Bob The Baker Boy’s Strawberries & Cream Cake and it’s about the same thing. This is one classic flavour to love, great for both young and old, and definitely one we will reorder.

BROWN SUGAR BOBA MILK CAKE

You guys, this cake is a dream come true. Imagine your favourite brown sugar boba milk, but in a cake form. That is exactly what it is—literally! Cut into fragrant vanilla cake layers, generously filled with creamy brown sugar Chantilly and sweet starchy boba fillings.

The Brown Sugar Boba Milk Cake is such a brilliant creation by Bob The Baker Boy. We love. the cottony soft and moist cake that is accompanied with fragrant brown sugar cream. And that boba filling! That chewy, sweet boba filling completed the cake with a lovely texture variety.

It is also noteworthy that Bob The Baker Boy bakes cakes with lower sugar content (30-50% lower in sugar than regular customised cakes). This is a huge plus point for us because we are the kind of people who dig into whole cakes even when it is nobody’s birthday, and we can do with something that’s significantly lesser in sugar so we do not feel as guilty for eating cakes. You feel us?

ASSORTED FOUR CHEESE TARTS

These cute little tarts are great for small parties and the kids are bound to love them. With a firm tart shell that crumbles upon sinking your teeth into it, the Brûlée Cheese Tarts (S$23.90 for 12) is our favourite flavour. Fresh cheese filling encased in fragrant vanilla tart crust, these little bites of happiness are super addictive and you simply cannot stop at one. Or two. Or three.

The other flavours to love are Strawberries Cheesecake Tarts, Cookies & Cream Mini Tarts and Blueberry Cheesecake Tarts. These are slightly stronger in terms of taste, but nothing too cheesy that non-cheese lovers can’t take.

AU NATUREL BROWNIES

Their brownies are slightly cakier and are more like cupcakes, actually. But we like that they are not cloyingly sweet. Reheat them in the microwave oven before eating.

If you’re a fan of the crisp layers of croissants and the way the flaky pastry just seems to melt on your tongue, Au Croissant will be right up your alley. Tucked away in Aperia Mall (that’s just a stone’s throw away from Lavender MRT), this hidden gem of a bakery specialises in their quirky flavours of croissants along with other wonderful breads and pastries.

We first savoured the Custard Cruffin (S$3.80)! The cruffin was definitely a stunner with a hint of creamy custard oozing out the top of the golden-brown pastry. It is also lightly dusted with icing sugar and if you ask the friendly staff to toast it for you, the icing melts into a nice glossy glaze that coats the crispy shell.

What we loved was that the cream was light and airy – not too sweet and cloying – such that it contrasted with the indulgent pastry encasing it.

Au Croissant also makes a variety of fun flavours of their croissants such as the Banana Kaya, Purple Sweet Potato, Gula Melaka and Peanut Butter Croissants. They all cost S$4.80. We tried the enticing-looking Black Sesame Croissant (S$4.80).

The golden-brown pastry is glazed with a smoky black sesame crumble layer and then topped with more white and black sesame seeds. We were also surprised once we bit into the croissant, revealing that there was another layer of black sesame paste hidden inside.

It was smoky, sweet and buttery all in a single bite. We devoured this sweet treat in minutes!

The bakery is located nearest to Lavender MRT, just a 5 minute walk away from Lavender Exit B. Drop by Au Croissant if you’re craving some fun-flavoured croissants or toasty freshly-baked goods!

Having opened its first outlet in 2012, Baker & Cook has made a name in Singapore for their freshly-baked goods and classic pastries. Serving up an array of delectable sweet treats, it’s perfect place to grab a bite on a weekend morning with a coffee in hand.

We visited Baker & Cook at their Hillcrest outlet, hidden in Greenwood Avenue’s enclave of eateries. As soon as we opened the doors, we were greeted with the smell of warm butter, sugar and a faint waft of freshly brewed espresso. Check out what we tried and our thoughts on this homegrown bakery!

Nestled at the edge of Greenwood Avenue’s row of shophouses and restaurants is the cosy storefront of Baker & Cook. Decorated with warm lights and the irresistible smell of sweets, Baker & Cook had a calm and inviting ambience.

As you step into the bakery, you will be immediately greeted by the beautiful displays filled with multi-coloured tarts, cakes and other bakes.

From the sweet pink Strawberry Lamingtons (S$5.50) to the sinfully fudgy Caramel Brownies (S$6.50), you’ll be spoilt for choice as you scan through the aisles of Baker & Cook.

One of the highlights of our trip was having their classic Croissant (S$3.90). The delicate pastry was flaky and tasted so indulgent and buttery, we were tempted to grab another! It had an almost smoky aftertaste that we enjoyed.

We saw it as the perfect accompaniment to a cup of Baker & Cook’s AllPress Espresso from New Zealand.

This is one cafe in the West we wouldn’t mind another trip to.

Nestled amongst residences at Bukit Timah is Crown Bakery & Cafe.
It is no wonder that Crown Bakery & Cafe is not only a favourite amongst locals but expats living nearby. If you’re craving some good dough, visit this local bakery for some of the best freshly-baked goods in Singapore.

Check out what we thought about Crown Bakery & Cafe!

Scanning through their stacked rows of golden-brown pastries, we immediately knew that we had to try their 27-Layer Croissant (S$3.20). Its flaky exterior was practically calling out to us from the display shelves! We would recommend you to get it toasted before eating, though.

Despite it being but a plain pastry, it was packed with the taste of fresh butter. The layers fell apart upon biting into it and it was deliciously flaky and flavourful.

It was already perfect on its own, just imagine if it were paired with some cream cheese or spreads!

Other than their croissant, Crown Bakery also serves up interesting pastries like their French-Japanese fusion Seaweed Cheese Croissant (S$4), Sweet Potato Bread (S$2.93) and classic French Baguette (SS4.50).

Located just a short bus ride from Botanic Gardens MRT Station, it’s the perfect respite for weekend brunch-goers and those wanting to treat the family to some quality baked goods.

Tucked away in Upper Cross Street is Whiskit Bakery & Cafe—one of the most instagrammable cafes in Singapore which serves up an array of delectable desserts!

From colourful Rainbow Cheesecakes to more local-inspired pastry such as Kaya Ondeh tarts, Whiskit Bakery & Cafe is definitely one to mark down on your list of cafes you have to try in Singapore.

Decorated with all-pink chairs and floral decor, this hidden gem of a cafe is sure to send your Instagram-senses tingling with excitement. It was also relatively easy to spot with its beautiful decor, setting it apart from the traditional stores surrounding it in this quiet part of Chinatown.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

We first had a taste of their Kaya Ondeh Tart (S$4.50). It was a very petite pastry with several fluffy balls of mini Ondeh Ondeh kueh sitting atop a kaya filling and a buttery crust.

The tiny balls of Ondeh Ondeh were filled with gula melaka filling, making each chew very flavourful despite its small size. We did think that the Kaya filling was a little too runny, though. Perhaps the tart would have been made better with a thicker and more flavourful kaya filling!

Next up, we managed to try their Lemon Meringue Tart (S$6.50)—a lemon curd-filled sweet tart is topped with a torched meringue rosette.

We found Whiskit Bakery & Cafe’s Lemon Meringue Tart to be one of our favourite renditions of the French pastry. The lemon curd filling had a wonderfully smooth texture and tasted refreshingly zesty. The tart shell was also nice and buttery. With the meringue, the tart altogether was a delight to eat!

Other than the two pastries we mentioned, Whiskit Bakery & Cafe also serve up other interesting pastries such as their “Tart Kiu” Milo Tart (S$6.50) and Hazelnut Speculoos Tart (S$5).

Just a short walk from Chinatown MRT (Exit F), Whiskit Bakery & Cafe is a great place to take a short break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

It is such a shame that traditional bakeries are vanishing as Singapore’s economy progresses. The food industry is competitive and many older confectioneries have long given way to other profitable businesses. That comes as no surprise as Singaporeans are only willing to pay S$1 for a local treat, but have no qualms splurging S$10 on a premium cake.

Fortunately, several age-old establishments’ utmost dedication in serving handcrafted heritage delicacies have withstood the test of time and transient fads. The only worry is whether there would be young Singaporean artisans to take over this tough trade.

From halal-certified Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery to award-winning Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring, here is our guide to 11 Traditional Bakeries In Singapore To Check Out.

Leung Sang Hong Kong Pastries is Heaven on Earth. Upon stepping in, you would be greeted by the aroma of fresh bakes and everything wonderful. This old-school looking confectionery may look next to nothing, but they have one of the best egg tarts in Singapore

We first had the egg tarts from Leung Sang Hong Kong Pastries back in 2007, and we have been fans of it ever since. The confectionery used to be on Sago Street – inconspicuous and hard to locate. But the ones in the know make it there anyway. Today, they sit on Jalan Membina, opposite Tiong Bahru Bakery.

Other pastries that are baked in-house and sold at Leung Sang Hong Kong Pastries include Roasted Chicken Pastry, Polo Buns, Lotus Seed Century Egg Pastry and Mushroom Chicken Pie.

Nayuki has finally reached our sunny shores and we bet you are as excited as we are!

Priding themselves on serving high-quality brews alongside whacky soft Euro breads, Nayuki isn’t just another typical cheese tea store that is hopping onto the bandwagon of food fads.

An extremely popular brand in China that has already been around for more than three years, Nayuki is said to pioneer the concept of pairing Euro-inspired bakes with fresh fruit blend premium teas. Their success has led them to open dozens of outlets across mainland China. Since its beginning in 2015, this Shenzhen-born brand has opened an over 180 stores, earning themselves the reputation of “The Nayuki Veloci-tea” due to their rapid expansion.

A joint venture between Shenzhen Pindao and BreadTalk Group, this is Nayuki’s very first outlet outside of China. And it is right here in Singapore!

Nayuki is set to open at Vivocity tomorrow, 8th December 2018. You’d also be glad to hear that as part of their opening, Nayuki will be giving away one free bread with every purchase of a drink (while stocks last!).

Here is what you can expect!

SUPREME CHEESE FRUIT TEA

Nayuki Singapore will offer just 3 flavours for the Supreme Cheese Fruit Tea Series: Supreme Cheese Strawberry (S$8.30), Supreme Cheese Mango (S$7.90) and Supreme Cheese Grape (S$7.90).

For first-timers, we highly recommend you to get their signature Supreme Cheese Strawberry. Having consistently been the top-seller in its cheese fruit tea range, this beverage is the very one that spurred the brand into investing in a strawberry field. Atop the drink is a velvety blend of cheese derived from New Zealand cheese blocks, adding a tinge of saltiness to the refreshing beverage.

CHEESE FAMOUS TEA

If you’re all about that savoury cheesy goodness but without the sour kick from the fruits, perhaps Nayuki’s range of Cheese Famous Teas will entice you.

Out of the lot, what left the deepest impression on us was the Cheese Ali Mountain Dew (S$5.50), which is the very same brew that won them an award during the Taiwan Winter Tea Competition last year. Oh, and zero sugar is added!

The tea is brewed using tea buds that are painstakingly handpicked before sunrise when the leaves are still covered in morning dew, before being roasted at low temperatures for 40 hours. The result? An aromatic tea that comes with a hint of natural sweetness and floral scents.

PEARL FRESH MILK SERIES

Many food fads have come and gone, but bubble tea is one that has successfully endured the test of time. Nayuki also serves up a range of milk teas that, while rather selective, sure hits all the right spots in terms of quality.

Going back to the classics, Nayuki also serves a neat selection of milk teas in the likes of Fresh Milk Black Pearl (S$4.50), Frosted Cap Oolong Black Pearl (S$5.20), Golden Mountain Black Pearl (S$5.20).

COLD-BREW TEA & FRESH FRUIT TEAS

Tea-lovers can look forward to a range of cold brew offerings too. Their Cold-Brew Tea Series includes the Green Oolong (S$4.20), Frosted Cap Oolong (S$4.20) and Golden Cicada Oolong (S$3.90).

A fun fact: after finishing your tea, the bottle reveals a Chinese poem. Well, random nothings like that give us an odd sense of satisfaction.

SOFT EURO BREAD

Apart from being a stalwart in tea, Nayuki is also famous for their pillowy soft Euro bread, which are said to go hand in hand with the beverages.

There are many types of pairings in the world—cheese and wine, steaks and wine, and many more with wine. But hey, you can pair breads with tea here at Nayuki!

Every bread has a complementing tea flavour, so you really should get a tea and a bread to fully experience the flavours’ totality. For a start, the strawberry ones work well together. You can also ask the servers for various pairing suggestions.

Their signature items are the Strawberry Blush Mystique (S$6.80), Dark Oreo Mystique (S$5.80) and the adorable QQ Pearly Choco Bear (S$3.30), which we can safely say will be a surefire hit amongst children and adults alike.

Catering to the local palates, the MSW Durian Supreme (S$7.80) is Nayuki’s rendition on the King of Fruits—luscious, creamy Mao Shan Wang durian puree is stuffed in a fluffy soft-euro bread and it was so good that we couldn’t stop eating.
