When one mentions waffles, the image that usually comes to mind is a plate of freshly made waffles drenched in saccharine maple syrup or topped with ice cream. But contrary to what you may think, waffles can also be enjoyed paired with savoury ingredients instead of always sweet ones.

Savoury waffles are not uncommon but they are not as readily available as their sugary counterparts. There are a number of places that serve up some pretty solid chicken waffles but don’t restrict yourselves to just that; some places even have some pretty interesting creations such as duck confit waffles, smoked salmon waffles and chicken waffles topped with kimchi!

If you’re someone who doesn’t have a sweet tooth and you’d like to have a savoury waffle for a change, we are here to help you suss out where you can find some of the best savoury waffles in Singapore. Here is our list of 9 places in Singapore to get savoury waffles.

CLINTON STREET BAKING COMPANY & RESTAURANT

If you have a voracious appetite for fried chicken, you’d definitely love Clinton Street Baking Company and Restaurant’s chicken and waffles. The chicken accompanying the waffles here is huge! We also love how well seasoned the chicken is and how each bite is chock full of flavour. As each serving is pretty massive, we recommend those of you who have smaller appetites to share this with someone.

Duckland’s name is an easy giveaway to what waffles they specialise in — duck waffles! Their Duck Confit & Waffle features a fork-tender confit duck leg that is encrusted in a smoky, crisp skin that brims with intense flavours of duck fat. We recommend drizzling some of the provided maple syrup over the waffle for a whole new experience.

Serving popular American diner fare, OverEasy’s Momma’s Chicken & Waffles served with warm maple butter is undoubtedly one of the better Chicken & Waffles on this list. The chicken here is fried to a satisfying golden crisp which is further enhanced by the syrupy maple butter.

STATELAND COFFEEHOUSE

Ever heard of a Korean fried chicken waffle? We didn’t until we came across Stateland Coffeehouse and here, they have a completely unheard of waffle creation — Spicy Korean Fried Chicken with Kimchi Slaw! We love how the kimchi adds an interesting tangy touch to the entire dish that surprisingly works. If kimchi isn’t your thing, they also have the basic Korean Fried Chicken Waffle and Soy Korean Fried Chicken Waffles.

The Beast’s Chicken and Waffles is made using their Signature fried chicken. The retro fast food joint is famous for its American-style dishes that mostly consist of waffles. Aside from the usual array of ice cream waffles, they sell a really mean chicken waffle that we honestly can say is one of the best in Singapore.

It’s incredibly satisfying to break open the egg and watch all that runny yolk coat the waffles and salmon.

Happy 2nd birthday, our favourite waffles heaven Twenty Grammes!

Twenty Grammes is a dessert bar that has been so popular since its first outlet in North Bridge Road, and the newer outlet at Ang Mo Kio is no less inviting. They specialise in waffles and ice cream, and that’s pretty much the best things on earth.

In conjunction with their 2nd anniversary this month, Twenty Grammes has rolled out a dessert that is bound to get you excited—Hojicha Soft Serve on Waffle.

And on top of that, we have a really great deal for all of you. From now until 23 December 2016, quote ‘ladyironchef’ to get 50% OFF the second waffle or bingsu (on the lower-priced item) on weekdays.

Here are 10 Most Instagrammable Desserts From Twenty Grammes.

#1 S’MORES WAFFLE

Made up of Twenty Grammes’ signature crispy and fluffy Belgian waffles, the S’mores Waffle (S$15) is topped with melted torched marshmallows, chocolate hazelnut sauce, graham crackers, whipped cream and a scoop of ice cream to your preference. We recommend getting a chocolate-based ice cream flavour to go with this particular waffles!

#2 SASSY FELLOW

If you are not the biggest fan of chocolates, how does a banana waffle sound? The Sassy Fellow (S$12.90) features slices of fresh bananas cooked inside a waffle batter. The cooked waffles are then topped with more bananas, walnuts for an added crunch, maple syrup, sea salt caramel sauce and a huge scoop of Vanilla or Honey-Scotch Ice Cream.

#3 ISABELLE WAFFLE

The Isabelle Waffle (S$16.50) is a full-black charcoal waffle topped with everything a health nut will love—greek yogurt, peaches, strawberries, blueberries, banana, granola, pumpkin seeds, maple syrup and a sprinkle of icing sugar. A very pretty one indeed, and it’s great for days when you don’t want to sin too much but still need your waffle fix.

#4 YUAN YANG WAFFLE

The Yuan Yang Waffle (S$15) is an Instagram hit. Half of the waffle is charcoal, and the other is the classic batter. This monochromatic beauty is topped off with a huge serving of milk soft serve, cookie sticks, granola and chocolate hazelnut sauce. Simple, but it works for our soul all the time. This has always been one of our favourites at Twenty Grammes.

#5 INJEOLMI BINGSU

Yes, you read it right. Twenty Grammes has introduced the Korean dessert to their menu! The Injeolmi Bingsu (S$12.90) is a classic rendition of the Korean snow ice dessert and is topped off with soybean powder.

#6 CHOCOLATE FUDGE BROWNIE BINGSU

The Chocolate Fudge Brownie Bingsu (S$14.50) is a more badass version with generous toppings; just look at those huge chunks of fudge brownies. Although this version isn’t quite like the traditional bingsu, it is definitely more satisfying and we prefer this to the former!

#7 RAINBOW CREPE CAKE

Twenty Grammes makes all of the cakes in house and for this, we are certainly impressed. We actually really enjoyed this Rainbow Crepe Cake (S$8.90), a 2nd Anniversary special. We know that most people write off rainbow desserts as they usually look better than they taste but in this case, the crepe cake was creamily good. The layers were even and the buttercream was delicious.

#8 BLUE VELVET CAKE

This Smurf-coloured cake (S$7.90) is gorgeous and we could not keep our eyes off it. The cake layers are fluffy and soft, and sure you may say the blue comes from food colouring but we love how pretty it is anyway. By the way, it is not overly sweet like normal coloured cakes would taste.

#9 WHITE CHOCOLATE COTTON CANDY AFFOGATO

The White Chocolate Cotton Candy Affogato (S$7.90) is such a beauty. Fluffy pink cotton candy cloud sits atop white chocolate ice cream and warm espresso, and when you pour the chocolate over, the cotton candy crumbles and melts into the coffee. Sugar rush, anybody?

#10 2ND ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL – HOJICHA SOFT SERVE ON WAFFLE

Saving the best for the last—Twenty Grammes introduces Hojicha Soft Serve on Waffle (S$8.50) in conjunction with their 2nd anniversary. The soft serve sits nicely in a cup with bite-sized waffle pieces, and is decorated with beautiful lavender edible flowers. We loved the taste of the Hojicha waffle. Intense roasted flavours but not overpowering; just the way we like it!

Tucked away in Lorong Kilat, Revelry is a waffle specialty cafe in the west of Singapore which boasts a lively yet enticing vibe that illuminates the entire street. Stepping in, your spirits will instantly be lifted by the vibrant colours and colourful wall murals.

Get even more excited as Revelry has a waffle pizza on their menu. The O.K Waffle Pizza (S$16) consists of a unique combination of Otah chunks, kai lan and baked mozzarella.

We decided to go for the classics and one of the most popular items on the menu – Chicken & Waffles (S$17).

The combination of the crisp waffles and the juicy deep-fried chicken thigh was a match made in heaven and all the textures just weaved together seamlessly. The seasoning on the fried chicken thigh could not have been done better and both the spices and the batter of the chicken was done right.

Since Revelry specialises in waffles, we definitely had no qualms about the one that was served to us. It was both fluffy on the inside and crisp on there outside. The Chicken & Waffles combination also comes with maple syrup on the side, and lettuce and cherry tomatoes for an added crunch.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

If Chicken & Waffles are not up your alley, some other savoury creations to try are Prawn Avocado Tartare (S$17.50), Strawberries & Cheese (S$14) and the adorably named Monkey King (S$14) – which is really a dessert waffle with banana cake chunks, caramelised bananas, toasted walnuts and vanilla ice cream.

Also, did we mention that Revelry has free Wi-Fi?

Chicken & Waffles is EVERYTHING.

A typical all-American diner food this is, and one that we always crave for. Somehow, we didn’t have many options in Singapore, till recently. Suddenly, everyone is crazy about Chicken & Waffles, and that means more and more F&B establishments are jumping onto the bandwagon and coming up with their renditions.

We are certainly not complaining; we are up for this dish of fluffy waffles with fried golden-brown chicken anytime!

Chicken & Waffles first started gaining popularity in American-theme restaurants such as OverEasy and The Beast. Now, you can even find value-for-money options in coffee shops and in the heartlands of Singapore. We have collated a list of Best Chicken & Waffles in Singapore You Must Try!

#1 ARTEASTIQ BOUTIQUE TEA HOUSE

For those who are more health-centric, you would be happy to know that there is actually a healthier option of Chicken & Waffles. Arteastiq Boutique Tea House’s Chicken & Waffles (S$22) comes with pan-fried chicken bits (instead of being coated with batter then deep-fried), onions and salad – all sitting atop of whole-wheat waffles.

The waffle comes with Thai mayonnaise sauce instead of the usual maple syrup, and that gives the overall dish a hint of an Asian flavour.

#2 CLINTON STREET BAKING COMPANY

What we always look out for when it comes to this American dish is the actual marinate and cook on the chicken. The Chicken & Waffles (S$21) was a 50/50 for us. The chicken was huge but a bit too dry for our liking. But what we were happy about, was the lovely seasoning on the chicken.

The dish is served with some maple butter on the side. Do note that the portion here is huge and it is probably more than enough for two to share!

Who would have thought that a seafood restaurant could serve a decent portion of Chicken & Waffles (S$15)? For the reasonable price, you get huge chicken pieces and a whole waffle, cut up into four pieces. Even if the waffle itself was not a star, the chicken we had was good enough to make this dish utterly irresistible.

Not only was the marinate spot-on, the cook on the chicken was so perfect, leaving the chicken still crisp and juicy when we bit into it.

Serving popular American diner fare, OverEasy’s Waffles with Breaded Wings (S$22) served with maple syrup and whipped honey butter is undoubtedly one of the better Chicken & Waffles on this list. Our only gripe is that chicken wings were used instead of thigh or breast, making it hard to eat (unless you are a pro at it – without using your hands).

This waffle specialty cafe in the West of Singapore is a popular spot for many and it was packed at 3pm on a random weekday afternoon, so we could only imagine the crowds that flock here on weekends.

The Chicken & Waffles (S$17) was spot on in many ways. The overall textural balance was amazing – from the fluffy waffles, to the crunchy salad, and the crisp yet juicy deep-fried chicken thigh.

#7 THE BEAST

As one of our favourite unique waffles in Singapore, The Beast’s Chicken & Waffles (S$20) is probably the most authentic one. Just hearty goodness, without all that extra fluff.

The bourbon maple syrup served on the side is so good, we pretty much licked the entire glass bottle clean.
