Perhaps one of the most versatile sauces to go onto—and sometimes even into—our food is salted egg yolk. A simple yet quintessential component that can turn something that, by itself is pretty average, into something insanely addictive, salted egg yolk is something we all go mad for.

Sweet, creamy, savoury and normally brimming with nuanced aromas of curry leaves and chilli, salted egg yolk dishes remain at the helm of Singapore’s ever-evolving food scene. A popular zi char comfort food and something we often gravitate towards whenever we’re in need of a hearty tummy filler is salted egg yolk chicken rice.

Here, we suss out our favourite spots to get salted egg yolk chicken rice, ensuring that you will always have a place to turn to whenever the craving for this decadent dish kicks in—regardless of the time of day. Here is our list of 6 best salted egg yolk chicken rice in Singapore.

CUI XIANG YUAN

Cui Xiang Yuan Restaurant has under its belt a rather impressive repertoire of traditional zi char dishes. Their standout dish among the lot is no doubt their Salted Egg Chicken Rice.

Possessing all the qualities of a decent salted egg yolk chicken—from the crispy chicken to the sweet, savoury and subtly spicy sauce—we must admit that this hit the spot. We will admit that it was not the best we’ve tried but it sure did not disappoint either way.

GLC RESTAURANT

Boasting an impressive array of zi char delights that taste really good and are priced pretty affordably, GLC Restaurant is definitely one to consider should you find yourself hankering after proper zi char that’s also Muslim-friendly for your Muslim friends.

Their famous Salted Egg Chicken Dice Rice (S$5.50) came with a generous portion of diced chicken coated in a copious amount of savoury, spicy salted egg sauce as well as a fried egg that was perched atop a bed of warm white rice. The salted egg sauce truly had us in awe. We’ve tried many different kinds of salted egg dishes and this is no doubt one of our favourites. The sauce here is a tad bit spicier here than most places. However, we preferred that and we liked how it gave the dish an extra fiery kick.

New Station Snack Bar nestled in Far East Plaza is where you can find affordable Chinese food in town. This small eatery has been highly raved about for serving delectable pork ribs, chicken wings and other side dishes but the dish that you absolutely must-try is their Salted Egg Yolk Pork Rice—our favourite Salted Egg Pork Rice in Singapore.

Crispy and succulent, the pork ribs are drenched in a tasty salted egg yolk sauce; we love that the sauce is rich and extremely flavourful with a hint of curry from the curry leaves—a great and cheap option should you wish not to overspend when you’re in town.

One of our favourite places in Singapore to satisfy our cravings for Salted Egg Chicken/ Pork Ribs rice is at Taste Good, a hidden gem nestled on the second floor of Sim Lim Square that serves up stellar economical mixed rice dishes, and most importantly, the extremely popular Salted Egg Chicken with rice.

Served in a mini wok, a generous portion of salted egg chicken is layered atop cabbage and also comes with a sunny side up egg (with a top-up of S$0.50) and white rice. We appreciated that Taste Good kept the presentation simple, as the beauty of its simplicity allowed us to focus on the true flavours of the dish—The smooth, creamy salted egg yolk sauce was the bomb.

YONG TAI SEAFOOD

Serving up a surprisingly wide variety of dishes from humble rice and noodle one-dish-wonders to other seafood and meat dishes, what you can expect from Yong Tai Seafood is local zi char comfort food done right and at a reasonable price point—it’s also good that they close at 4am on most days, meaning that you can get quality zi char in the wee hours of the morning.

Famous for their Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Rice, we made it a point to order one up for ourselves. We were not disappointed, in fact, given its price point—and how fast it took from the wok to our table—we were rather impressed.

Kabuke is a new Japanese sake bar and restaurant hidden on the second level of a shophouse in Telok Ayer.

The name ‘Kabuke’ is a combination of two words—kabuki and sake. ‘Kabuki’ is a Japanese word which refers to classical Japanese theatre and this is reflected in the cartoon performers that are painted on the walls.

Sake connoisseurs will be pleased to know that Kabuke has a well-stocked bar with a collection of Sake from over 20 prefectures! As for those who are looking for some grub, they also offer contemporary Japanese dishes.

For the beginners, Kabuke has sorted out their sake into three main categories, which are mainly A (90ml – S$8/300ml – S$24), B (90ml – S$12/ 300ml – S$36) and C (90ml – S$18/ 300ml – S$54). Besides that, they are also offering sake flight (S$24) for those who are keen to sample on three different sake varieties.

Some of the sake options they have now include Mukansa Honjozo Super Dry that comes with a pleasant bitterness, Junmai Ginjo with its fruity accents and Junmai Daiginjo 50 which has a light and clean taste on your palate.

Lunch is an excellent time to visit; their beef bowls start from S$15 and you can choose from Gyudon, Wagyu Suki or Wagyu Striploin Bowls. Alternatively, they also have daily rice bowl specials such as the Salted Egg Chicken Katsu Don (S$15).

SUPER ADDICTIVE SALTED EGG YOLK CRISPY CHICKEN

Introducing the new Salted Egg Yolk Crispy Chicken, something that you really must try.

It is true that there have been a lot of salted egg yolk dishes introduced over the last year. And we are adding this rendition to our list of favourites. Imagine your favourite XXL crispy chicken, without the seasoning powders, but slathered with generous amounts of golden and creamy salted egg yolk sauce. It is truly heaven on earth.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We liked that the sauce is not too potent and that it did not overwhelm each bite. The crispy chicken is the same good old chicken that we have always loved—huge so it would be good to share, or even alone as a light meal.

To make it a full meal, you can choose from one of Shihlin’s new milk blended drinks.

NEW MILK BLENDED DRINKS

Taro Milk Blended and Papaya Milk Blended are the two new drinks offered alongside the Salted Egg Yolk Crispy Chicken.

Both drinks are extremely rich and creamy, almost like a dessert. They come in adorable plastic bottles that you can reuse.

SIGNATURE ORIGINAL XXL CRISPY CHICKEN

This is a classic order at Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks and you can never go wrong with it.

The XXL Crispy Chicken is the most popular order, and you can even have it as a complete meal in a rice box. The chicken is always deep-fried upon order, then coated with seasoning powders. Once the flavouring is done, the chicken cutlet will be cut up into bite-sized pieces for easier consumption.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Every crepe is filled generously with the ingredients and is wrapped up in handmade spring onion crepe skin. These crepes are also best eaten hot, and the cheese pull is an immense satisfaction to watch.

NIBBLE ON SWEET PLUM POTATO FRIES

The Sweet Plum Potato Fries are painstakingly hand-cut in store to maintain its freshness. The fries are deep-fried upon order, then coated with their special in-house plum powder.

Just a heads up—these fries are extremely addictive. You will find yourself munching on these non-stop until you are done with the bag. They are that delicious!

New Station Snack Bar nestled in Far East Plaza is where you can find affordable Chinese food in town. This small eatery has been highly raved about for serving delectable pork ribs, chicken wings and other side dishes.

Conveniently located within walking distance from Orchard MRT Station, this is one great destination for a wallet-friendly meal.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

When the Salted Egg Popcorn Chicken was served to us, the fries were piping hot but the chicken tasted like it was left out there for quite awhile before being served to us. And it tasted ordinary. But the sauce is worth a mention, and we soon overlooked it all for the salted egg yolk sauce was addictive and divine.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

What you should try at The Chicken King is the Chicken and Waffles. The chicken thigh comes topped with caramelised onions and torched mozzarella cheese. Sadly, the caramelised onions did nothing for us, and together with the badly torched cheese, it looked and tasted nothing more than a burnt mess.

But what took us by surprise was actually the waffle itself! The fragrance and taste of the buttermilk sure upped the ante for the waffle, and the accompanying salted egg sauce is what they would say, “the bomb dot com.”

Thick and boasting bits of salted egg and chilli padi, the sauce was every bit flavourful and slightly spicy; it sure elevated the overall taste of the dish.

For an additional S$2.50, you get a soft drink and a side of your choice – pick from Shoe String Fries, Egg Fried Rice and Coleslaw. Unfortunately, the fries tasted so bad. It was basically just frozen fries badly fried. The Coleslaw was slightly better; we thought it was mayo overload, though.

Well, just skip the sides altogether.

And oh, the waiting time can be extremely long. You have been warned.
