CNA Implied That Hot Coffee Will Cause Cancer – Here’s What A Barista Has To Say

In a recent video by Channel News Asia, the media company implied that there’s a link between hot coffee and cancer. Here’s what Dennis Tang—co-founder of Nylon Coffee Roasters, a popular micro-roastery based in Singapore—has to say about this topic.

FACT:
1. World Health Organization says drinking hot drinks MAY cause cancer, but never does it highlight COFFEE as the only cause.

2. Most of us baristas froth our milk drinks to a temperature of between 55-70 (Nylon maintains our standards between the range of 60-65). By the time the milk is poured into the cup, served and drank, it would be easily 5-10 degrees lower by the time one has their coffee.

3. Based on US cancer figures, esophageal cancer is about 1% of all cancer cases found.

FAKES:
1. Shooting a barista frothing milk and pouring into an espresso but sticking a thermometer into a long black to show that the coffee is 84 degrees is downright pitiful and disgraceful.

The potential risks of esophageals cancer also apply across to the hot soup that your mom beautifully cooked for you earlier, the tea that you were sipping off after lunch or the hot chocolate that you had this morning, basically anything that is higher than a certain temperature. It might actually make more sense to cut down on the tobacco and alcohol rather than avoiding that coffee.

Everton Park is quickly becoming the latest it neighbourhood. Some call it the new Tiong Bahru, and it is not difficult to see why. Since Nylon Coffee Roasters and Grin Affair started here in 2012, this quiet HDB neighbourhood has been drawing foodies to explore the area.

Today, there are eight cafes in this enclave, and we won’t be surprised if more cafes and shops choose to open here in the future. You know that Everton Park is officially cool when hotelier Loh Lik Peng – who is behind many boutique hotels and restaurants in off-the-radar neighbourhoods – has also helped to set up a cafe here.

BATTERWORKS

Batterworks has the usual desserts like carrot cake, chocolate fudge brownies and cupcakes, but what makes them stand out is its range of savoury pastries such as roasted pork in flaky pastries, and curry flaky pastries. There is also a dine-in menu which offers inexpensive savoury food. You can find main courses (S$4.50 – S$6.90) like lamb stew pot pie, chicken bulgogi wrap and pulled pork wrap.

One of the pioneer cafes in Everton Park, Grin Affair offers a range of mousse cakes (S$6 – S$6.50) that are made with fresh cream, and served in jars.

Flavours include lychee with passion fruit, strawberry with cream cheese, cookies & cream, hazelnut, and matcha azuki. The cakes are not particularly fanciful, but we love them because they are comforting and rustic – the kind that you can spend your afternoon with over a cup of tea.

The latest addition to the Unlisted Collection Group, The Provision Shop is a new venture by Cocotte’s head chef, the group’s general manager, and operations manager, with hotelier Loh Lik Peng taking a consulting role.

It is a casual eatery which dishes out simple yet delicious meals at affordable prices. Some dishes that are worth trying are Reuben sandwich (S$10), eggs Benedict (S$10), and the homemade pastas (S$14 – S$16). Remember to save room for desserts, too. We love the blueberry lemon cake (S$6.50)!

How many people can say that they are happy at what they are doing? Not many. But I am quite sure the folks at Nylon Coffee Roasters can do that, as they are truly passionate about their coffee.

They have taken over a small shophouse and created a lovely coffee paradise in the sleepy Everton Park Estate. Who would have thought that cafes could survive in a heartland residential area?

They roast their own beans, they talk about coffee as if reciting poetry, and they serve your cuppa with lots of love. One of the best coffees in Singapore? Yes, I think so.

In case you are going to gather a group of friends to go there and chill-out after reading this post, Nylon Coffee Roasters is more of a take-away place than a dine-in cafe. It has only three seats, and the small space can probably accommodate less than ten people at any time.

We need to support people who are brave enough to chase after their dreams, so make a trip to Nylon Coffee Roasters at Everton Park (near Tanjong Pagar/Outram) and get a cup of coffee.
