Lorong Kilat is a cosy little street near Beauty World MRT Station on the new Downtown Line in Singapore. The new Downtown Line has made the whole Bukit Timah area very accessible so there is no excuse to not travel to the West for food now!

#2 CAKE AVENUE BISTRO

Starting out as a cake shop in 2000, Cake Avenue has recently opened the Cake Avenue Bistro which has transformed the bakery into a bistro, with the aim to whet their customers’ appetite for more gastronomical delights. Tucked away in Lorong Kilat, Revelry is a waffle specialty cafe in the west of Singapore which boasts a lively yet enticing vibe that illuminates the entire street. Stepping in, your spirits will instantly be lifted by the vibrant colours and colourful wall murals.

Get even more excited as Revelry has a waffle pizza on their menu. The O.K Waffle Pizza (S$16) consists of a unique combination of Otah chunks, kai lan and baked mozzarella.

We decided to go for the classics and one of the most popular items on the menu – Chicken & Waffles (S$17).

The combination of the crisp waffles and the juicy deep-fried chicken thigh was a match made in heaven and all the textures just weaved together seamlessly. The seasoning on the fried chicken thigh could not have been done better and both the spices and the batter of the chicken was done right.

Since Revelry specialises in waffles, we definitely had no qualms about the one that was served to us. It was both fluffy on the inside and crisp on there outside. The Chicken & Waffles combination also comes with maple syrup on the side, and lettuce and cherry tomatoes for an added crunch.

If Chicken & Waffles are not up your alley, some other savoury creations to try are Prawn Avocado Tartare (S$17.50), Strawberries & Cheese (S$14) and the adorably named Monkey King (S$14) – which is really a dessert waffle with banana cake chunks, caramelised bananas, toasted walnuts and vanilla ice cream.

I have written previously that Korean-style fried chicken is one of my favourite guilty indulgences, and I am always on the lookout to try new places. If you are also a fan of Korean fried chicken, add Woori Nara Korean Restaurant to your list.

I have walked past Woori Nara many times, and the reason why it took me so long to come here is because I always end up going to my favourite Kim’s Family Restaurant, which is located along the same stretch at Lorong Kilat.

Woori Nara specialises in Korean chicken, and they offer four different flavours – original, soy, garlic, and its signature ‘yum yum’ sauce – on the menu. First-timers should go for the Sampler (S$20) – a mixture of original, yum yum and soy fried chicken. I won’t say that Woori Nara has the best Korean fried chicken in Singapore, but it does a decent rendition.

Although the Korean fried chicken is the highlight, some of the dishes also deserve equal attention. You can also find classic Korean dishes such as Grilled Pork Belly (S$35), Stone Pot Bibimbap (S$17), and Seafood & Kimchi Pancake (S$15). We also thoroughly enjoyed the Grilled Mackerel (S$17). The fish was fresh, and simply prepared. The Soybean Paste Soup (S$17), on the other hand, was mediocre and slightly over-priced. We would rather go for the Ginseng Chicken Soup (S$20).

All in all, the food at Woori Nara is decent, and if you are staying in the area, this is certainly a spot where you can come for some snacks and drinks.

When I heard from my friend Eunice that she was planning to open a vintage home store and artisan bakery café – I was excited for two reasons. First, I know Eunice and her eyes for perfection; I am confident that she will only deliver the best to customers, and her strong aesthetic sense will definitely create a wonderful setting. Second, I stay in the area, and I’ve always lamented that we did not have many nice cafes in the west of Singapore to talk about. But of course, that has changed with the addition of Carpenter and Cook at Lorong Kilat.

Since the vintage cafe opened in June, I’ve been there many times and I am happy to tell you that it is now one of my favourite cafes in Singapore.

I like Carpenter and Cook because it serves excellent home-made desserts. It is a shame that many cafes do not bake their own desserts (either due to space constraint or lack of capability) so I am delighted to say that Carpenter bakes everything in-house.

Some of their signature desserts — such as the carrot cake ($7), surely one of the best around; passionfruit meringue tart ($6.20), a very toothsome and flavourful rendition; lemon drizzle cake ($5): moist, and citrus-y; and lemon curd tart ($6.20), another of my favourite in town — are very addictive, and I cannot help it that I am always dropping by too often just to satisfy my cravings. For something savoury, I’d recommend their quiche ($7) with asparagus, tomato and roasted pepper; and brioche bun ($6.50) served with salad.

I also like the retail goodies – home made jams, granola, biscuits and marshmallows – that you can take home with you, or give it to friends as gifts.

I’ve said it before, and I’m not afraid to say it again, Kim’s Family Restaurant is my favorite place for Korean food in Singapore. I like it because they always serve ten side-dishes (I like to call them appetizers) no matter how many main dishes you ordered, I like the tasty and affordable Korean food there, and I like the fact that they are just ten minutes away from my place and I can have Korean food whenever cravings call.

I like it, because I like it. Why am I even explaining? Make a trip there and you will know.

As for kimchi, I’m sorry to admit, she’s just not my type. Even after trying it for a few times, kimchi just doesn’t do it for me. Sure, it’s a great appetizer, sour, slightly spicy – the perfect combination to get your palate going, but I’m just not that into kimchi.

I know there’s at least a dozen of people will hate me if I say this, but I have never been a fan of Ramen. Fine, maybe it’s just me, but ordering ramen makes me feel like we are paying restaurant price for instant noodles. With the increasing number of Japanese Ramen restaurants opening in Singapore, all the ramen-lovers are rushing to compare which place has the best ramen, but you know what, I don’t crave for ramen, so unless someone drag me along, it’s highly impossible for me to explore any ramen restaurants.

Okay this is tricky, since we did ordered Ramyeon ($8) with meat. It wasn’t too bad, I like the intense flavor of the stock, and the presence of egg, meat, seaweed that made the ramen, uh, tasty.

Bibimbap ($10) is, of course, delicious with chili, lots and lots of red spicy-sweet chili. Topped with ingredients like meat, seaweed, beansprout, and vegetables, and mix together with chili; the hot stone pot kept the temperature of the rice pipping hot – it’s perfect!

The Seafood pancake ($10) is a lovely appetizer, but do not let the word appetizer mislead you; the portion of the Korean-style pancake was more than enough to feed the four of us.

If you have another place that serves affordable Korean food with lots of side dishes, please let me know. For now, I will stick to Kim’s Family Restaurant.

When all my friends raved about Kim’s family restaurant, I know I have to check it out. Prior to this, my past experience with Korean food was limited to two places, so yes, up till now I have no idea how exactly an authentic kimchi taste like. The comprehensive menu meant that we spent another additional ten minutes flipping through before we finally decided on our orders.

Had I not been prepared by my friends recount of their experience, I’ll definitely be swamped by all the appetisers that arrived on our table. There was nine of them, and it even included a whole fish! There’s the usual kimchi, anchovy, spicy-sweet cucumber, and I particularly enjoyed the macaroni potato salad.

The braised beef claypot ($10) was excellent – sweet thinly sliced beef that came with cellophane noodles (dong fen) which fully absorbed the essence of the beef. We also had the kimchi fried rice ($10) which I somehow forgot to take a picture. The fried rice came with a sunny side-up on top; it looked good, but I would prefer it if it’s slightly more sourish and spicy. Bibimbap ($10) or hot stone pot rice completed the lineup for our dinner. What’s there not to like when you have hot piping rice in a hot stone mixed with so many ingredients and splashed with lots of chilli?

With the generous appetisers, and the value-for-money dishes, I will definitely return when my friends need a Korean fix, and the best part? It’s only ten minutes away from my place. See you there!
