The capital city of Malaysia is replete with eateries that will delight even the most sophisticated of gourmands. On the other end of the spectrum, Kuala Lumpur is also perfect for sampling local street food steeped in rich culture—this offers you a wholly novel experience from simply dining at regular indoor food joints.

A visit to Kuala Lumpur is no doubt incomplete without visiting one of these ubiquitous “pasar malams” that reflects the Southeast Asian lifestyle. From a plethora of unique delicacies, super cheap clothing, household knick-knacks to funky accessories and souvenirs, the night bazaars here are absolutely happening (and worth tackling). Do remember that bargain is de rigueur.

Are you ready to discover and appreciate the melting pot of Kuala Lumpur? Select a day, brace through the lively night markets and pamper your taste buds while you are at it.

A dizzying array of value-for-money goods such as electronics, apparels and street food also reel in a healthy dose of curious tourists.

#2 JALAN MASJID INDIA MARKET

The Masjid India area is also a textile haven courtesy of the tonnes of fabric that you can find all under one roof. Glistening necklaces, colourful bangles, intricate saree materials and delectable Indian snacks are just some of the other sights you will spot at the bustling night bazaar.

Wander around leisurely and browse through a string of pocket-friendly stalls that trade DVDs, household goods and local fare. Go for the renowned Nasi Campur if you are fickle!

The juxtaposition of the traditional timber homes with the staggering Petronas Twin Towers in the near distance makes this unique neighbourhood worthy of a pit-stop.

If you are absolutely famished, the laksa stall makes for a solid choice. Otherwise, you can also check out the tom yum steamboat nearby and see which one you are more in favour of!

The charm of old-school snacks and dishes here is bound to bring back nostalgic memories. Scattered around several streets and alleys, the stalls sell comforting food such as tau fu bakar, crisp dumplings, Chinese stinky tofu and spicy pan mee.

Come with an empty stomach and take your time to savour the affordable meals.

Botanica + Co Restaurant & Bar is quite possibly the most gorgeous restaurant in Kuala Lumpur; you’d have to step in to see for yourselves. Pictures just do not do justice to the splendour of the greenhouse-themed interior.

But for what it’s worth, Botanica + Co Restaurant & Bar in Bangsar South is a photogenic spot that is a dream for all botanical lovers. Every corner is a photo spot; every inch of the restaurant is filled with lush greenery.

The food’s really good too, in case you are wondering if it is just another gimmicky place that plays up on the aesthetics and neglects the food standards. Here’s everything we love about Botanica + Co Restaurant & Bar.

Botanica + Co Restaurant & Bar is located in Bangsar South, in a quaint area of office buildings and residences. It sits on the ground level and has both indoor and outdoor seats. There are also bar counter seats on the indoors.

The culinary team prides themselves on being produce-driven. They source for the freshest, quality ingredients daily to prepare every single dish on the menu.

The menu is not the most affordable one, but it is a comprehensive one, to say the least. It is divided into brunch, lunch, tea time, dinner and drinks. With a wide array of choices from sharing platters, sandwiches, pizzas to desserts, there is absolutely something for every taste bud.

What you really must not miss the world for is Sam’s Signature Laksa (RM42). It is no ordinary laksa but it is one that will have you fall in love with laksa if you don’t already love it. The broth is robust and boasts a multi-layered flavour that embodies the freshness of flower crab, big head prawn and poached chicken—on top of the underlying note of laksa pesto and homemade chilli paste.

The accompanying ingredients include quail eggs, julienned fish cakes and silver sprouts. It was a truly satisfying bowl, one that would make us want to return to Botanica + Co Restaurant & Bar for.

On the drinks menu, the options are aplenty but if you are not a big fan of cocktails, try the homemade sodas (RM19). They have pretty interesting concoctions such as Pandan & Lime Soda, Kaffir Lime & Lemongrass Cooler and Watermelon & Lychee Mint Soda.

There is also an all-day Happy Hour promo—3 for RM60 beer/ wine, anyone?

Sitting within Chocha Foodstore is Botakliquor. The 6-month old bar sits on the mezzanine of the popular bistro and it is every botanical lover’s dream come true. Botakliquor is easily one of the most photogenic and talked-about bars in Kuala Lumpur now.

With a well-curated menu of cocktails stemming mainly from gin, vodka and rum, this charming bar is definitely worthy of being on your itinerary when you visit Kuala Lumpur.

Step into Chocha Foodstore and you’d be transported to the old Malaya—green tiled floors, tungsten lights, wooden tables and everything 70′s. The old-school and relatively (or deliberately) run-down interior exudes a rustic charm that gets to you almost instantaneously.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Located on the second level of a shophouse, visitors have to climb up a flight of stairs to reach Coffee Amo. The interiors are kept simple and the place is adorned with landscape pictures of scenery and chalk drawings on the walls.

A trip to Coffee Amo is only complete when you order their specialty drinks. Sweet 16 (RM16/S$5.30) is a latte infused with hints of hazelnut flavour and came with just the right blend of sweet and bitter for us. Of course, you can also choose to add in more sugar.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

And can we just take a second to appreciate how adorable the foam kitten is? The skilled barista took less than five minutes to craft this out for us.

On the other hand, the Cheesecake (RM10/S$3.30) was like any average ones you can find outside—moist and comes with a simple biscuit base. We would say to skip the food and focus on the drinks instead, which is what Coffee Amo is known for.

If you are looking for something more exotic, go for the Kenya PB Kirimara, Ethiopia Sidamo Bensa or Panama Auromar Geisha.

Besides the famous Petaling Street, one other well-known food street in Kuala Lumpur is Jalan Alor. Located right in the heart of the city, Jalan Alor comes to life after 6pm. This is when you will see many vendors setting up their food stall and seafood restaurants at the side filling up.

The lively food street has plenty of options for you to choose from—be it light street snacks to local favourites and even Chinese-style zi char dishes. No matter what you are craving for, Jalan Alor has it all!

So for those who are heading to Kuala Lumpur, here are 8 Street Food You Should Try At Jalan Alor.

#1 HANDMADE DIM SUM

Choose your favourite types of dim sum or have one each! Customers are given a pair of tongs and a plastic container at this dim sum stall in Jalan Alor.

The concept is similar to yong tau foo where you pay a certain amount of money for a fixed number of items.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#2 DEEP-FRIED DURIAN

Hands up if you love durians just like us!

Locals will tell you that a trip to Malaysia is just not complete unless you have tried durian. Do not be surprised to see more than one stall selling deep-fried durian as it is one of their favourite street snacks.

#3 BARBECUED CHICKEN WINGS

Smoky barbequed chicken wings are one of the best street food you can find in Malaysia and you know it is the real deal when they grill it with burning charcoal. Do not shy away from having a plate or two.

#4 ROJAK

Sweet, spicy and sour. These are the three distinct flavours you will get from the Malaysia Rojak.

With plenty of pineapples, jambu (rose apples) and cucumber, it is like a fruit salad with thick sweet sauce and chopped peanuts.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#5 LOK LOK

Commonly known to many as “steamboat on a stick”, pick as many sticks as you like and put the bamboo skewers into a boiling pot of soup or deep fried in hot oil.

Once the food is cooked, you can proceed to add on any sauce that you fancy. This is a must-try at Jalan Alor!

#6 ROAST LAMB

Yes, this is a whole lamb being roasted on a spit. The meat will be cut into smaller pieces for easy eating. Enjoy the delicious roast meat served kebab-style.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#7 OYSTER OMELETTE

You would know that oyster omelette is a local delight in Malaysia.

Slightly different from the ones we have in Singapore, the fried egg is rather crispy and thin around the edges. Enjoy it with spicy chilli sauce given on the side.

#8 BARBECUED SATAY & SCALLOPS

You can choose to have anything barbequed—from chicken satay to scallops, chicken wings and even vegetables. The variety is amazing and there is something for everyone in the family!

Hidden under a pedestrian bridge along Jalan Pudu in Kuala Lumpur, A • Toast Breakfast & Juice Bar is an unassuming eatery you are likely to pass by without a second thought unless you are specifically looking for it.

Do not underestimate this humble breakfast bar, for its photogenic breakfast toasts and refreshing fruit juices have been gaining much popularity on social media recently. As its name suggests, A • Toast Breakfast & Juice Bar is a breakfast place that opens from early morning to mid-afternoon.

Those who are working nearby can grab a sandwich along the way to kick-start a productive day or have a simple brunch here during the weekends.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

In between lightly toasted bread slices is a wonderful combination of fresh green lettuce, tomato, cheese, buttery scrambled eggs and a generous portion of light and fluffy chicken floss.

Other homemade sandwiches offered by the breakfast bar include Black Sesame Toast (RM9.30/ S$3.10), Wholemeal Toast (RM9.30/ S$3.10) and Milky White Toast (RM8.90/ S$3).

You can also include add-ons such as sunny side egg, hashbrown, chicken ham, cheese sausage and more.

Of course, you should not miss out on their signature pure fruit juices as well. Choose from 12 different fruit juice options (RM8.90/ S$3) or go for breakfast classics such as Black Coffee, Milk Coffee and Mocha.

Acme Bar & Coffee at The Troika is located in Kuala Lumpur City Centre. The stylish cafe caters mostly to tourists and professionals working around the area and its sophisticated interior exudes an air of elegance. Yes, it is one of those places to see and be seen.

Think floor-to-ceiling windows where natural light is filtered in, clean lines and comfortable cushioned chairs to encourage customers to linger on for a leisure chat with their companions.

It is a great place to spend anniversaries and special occasions if you are in Kuala Lumpur.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

If there is one dessert you must try at Acme Bar & Coffee, this has to be it. The moist brownie was warm and rich in chocolate, and complementing the ice cream wonderfully was the generous serving of huge oreo chunks.

Acme Bar & Coffee’s Cappuccino (RM15++/ S$5++) tasted just like any good cappuccino you would find elsewhere. We liked that it was creamy with a hint of bitterness from the espresso. Sugar cubes are given at the side for those who prefer it to be sweeter.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

Upon entering the cafe, visitors are greeted with old wooden tables, exposed light bulbs and an open staircase that leads up to the second floor. Do note that guests are not allowed to go up to the next level.

Every corner of Chocha Foodstore makes for great OOTD backgrounds which you are unlikely to find elsewhere.

Head to the cafe early if you would like to choose your own seating, for it gets very busy during lunch time. Those who are seated at the long tables in the courtyard can expect to share the table with other diners and you can even make a friend or two.

Duck Confit Rice (RM26++/ S$8.70++) at Chocha Foodstore comes with generous slices of juicy duck meat accompanied with a slightly overdone ajitama egg and plenty of vegetables. The addition of chewy barley rice gave it an interesting texture when mixed with white rice.

And saving the best for the last—the Cincalok Fried Chicken (RM26++/ S$8.70++). This fragrant crispy chicken really deserves a special mention because of how well it tasted both on its own and together with fresh salsa.

Spice lovers have to polish off the homemade tomato chutney which gives the chicken an extra spicy kick.

Start your day with a hot cappuccino (RM$12) and fill your tummies with a scrumptious Buttermilk Chicken Chop (RM$25.50).

Situated in Chinatown district, Merchant’s Lane is considered a hidden gem – unless you look hard enough to spot its barely visible entrance. Do try their bestselling dessert, aptly named Better Than Sex (RM$16) – which is essentially a pandan roti jala topped with melted cheese, served with kaya ice-cream and completed with a drizzle of gula melaka.

While there are a total of three Three Little Birds Coffee cafes across Kuala Lumpur, it is the cafe at Sentul that coffee connoisseurs should check out. Look out for Artisan Roastery’s SmartRoast Merlin coffee roaster, where you can witness the entire roasting process and then sample the freshly roasted beans firsthand at Three Little Birds Coffee itself.

We thorough enjoyed the Soft Shell Crab Burger (RM$24) – a tasty battered crustacean sandwiched between two lightly toasted fluffy brioches. Highly recommended!
