At buffets, some of us lose all self-control and rationality as we devour way more food than what our bellies usually can take. The array of choices is a gastronomical galore for the glutton in us.

Quality of food aside, what’s as essential to such feasts is the company we are with. They say people who eat together, stay together, but eating in a group can be tricky sometimes with different palates and needs.

Katong Kitchen is an inclusive location for communal dining with family, friends, and colleagues. They are halal-certified with a buffet line-up that they expanded to feature familiar Malay, Indian, Chinese, and Eurasian dishes in addition to their Peranakan cuisine. Like their theme, it’s where the ‘Flavours of Singapore’ meet. There’s a selection of fresh seafood on ice, DIY dishes, as well as a hot plate and a noodle station where you can request for food that’s made-to-order.

This is definitely one place that will please one and all. If you haven’t been, here’s everything to love about Katong Kitchen.

Our readers can quote “ladyironchef” upon making reservations to enjoy 15% off Katong Kitchen’s lunch and dinner buffet from now until 30 June 2019.

Head towards the East of Singapore and get off at the main entrance of Village Hotel Katong (formerly Paramount Hotel), then go up to the fourth floor and you will see Katong Kitchen. A weekday buffet lunch costs S$40++ per adult and S$20++ per child, while weekend lunches cost S$50++ per adult and S$25++ per child.

Dinners on Mondays to Thursdays go at S$50++ for an adult and S$25 for a child, while the prices on Fridays to Sundays, eve of and on Public holidays are S$60++ per adult and S$30++ per child.

Settle in to the modern and cosy vibes of Katong Kitchen that reflects Peranakan culture with its panels of Peranakan motifs. Its central dining space is where you will be surrounded by the buffet stations. There are seats on the side that are ideal for a quieter cosy gathering.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The shop space is rather small and despite only being able to seat a maximum of 10 diners at one time (yes, it is that small), it is still pretty cramped especially if you have to ferry to and fro from the condiments and toppings station. It is also good to note that reservations have to be made prior in order to get a seat here.

Like kids at a candy shop, we spent a great deal of time picking from the huge selection of toppings—with more than ten savoury toppings and seven sweet toppings to choose from. The usual toppings include ham, sausages, shrimp, pepperoni, capsicums, mushrooms, corn and a whole lot more.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

And we love the usage of thick vermicelli. The best way to enjoy this dish is to slurp the vermicelli while enjoying the sweet broth! Don’t worry, everyone will be doing the same so you won’t be judged.

The Butter Crabs at Penang Street Buffet boast a rich, creamy texture and are topped off with curry leaves for an elevated fragrance. For those who are fans of butter-based sauces , soak the crab meat in the gravy if you are set on mopping the plate clean.

An icon of Singapore, and a dish to look out for on the buffet line. The Black Pepper Crab is freshly steamed and drenched with a sauce that is slow cooked with chopped onions, tomatoes and capsicums. Best eaten with fragrant white rice, of course!

Nothing beats a good old plate of chilli crab, but the Kampong Crab with Chilli from Penang St Buffet – though prepared slightly differently – is no less satisfying. In fact, this rendition is the closest to that of Penang-style chilli crab. With a sauce that is sweeter than the ones we have here in Singapore, this dish reminds us of the Malaysian yummies we have tried.. It is definitely as authentic as it can get. And yes, your favourite fried mantous are served alongside.

Are you thinking what we are thinking? It is party time!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The Nonya Kapitan Crab is an unexpected highlight of our crab buffet experience. With a sauce so robust in flavours, it totally whet our appetites and we could not stop eating. The fleshy crab claw is best enjoyed when dipped into this sour and spicy gravy,. We urge you to go straight for this flavour to kick start your experience at the Crab Madness Buffet.

The Curry Crab is another dish worth mentioning. With an addictive spicy flavour that jolted our taste buds tremendously, we say you fill up a plate of piping hot steamed rice, and drown your rice with the curry. No, really. The crab claw can wait for now because the curry is so damn good.

Even though the chefs at Penang St Buffet are masters in a plethora of cooking methods, they also remember those who just want a simple crab dish where patrons can savour the natural sweetness of the crab. Just crack open the claws and be greeted with delicate and soft meat, best consumed with their homemade chilli concoction.

Cooking with bean sauce is essentially a Cantonese’s favourite way of preparing seafood, as with the Malaysians.. They call that the ’Tau Chiu style’, and Penang St Buffet did a marvelous job in introducing their crabs in this style. Their crab with bean sauce is stir-fried with thick and gooey gravy, with added garlic and chopped chill for a hint of spiciness.

Presenting to you, the stuffed crab with cheese. Crab meat is stuffed into the crab shell, sprinkled with mozzarella cheese, then popped into the oven. Well, you cannot really go wrong with cheese, yes? Now, picture this – you dip your forks into the crab shell and pull out strings of cheese with chunks of crab meat. Yes, you are welcome.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The herbal chicken deserves a special mention – prepared with prized dang shen, pao shen, wolfberries, red dates and angelica herb, this comforting dish is the surest way to win everyone’s hearts. Also, look forward to Seafood Garlic Fried Rice in Banana Leaf and Sweetened Cream of Red Bean with Lotus & Lily Bulbs in this menu.

Go work the sums and you would know what a great deal you are in for if you opt for Menu A – Golden Harvest. Nothing but premium dishes that are presentable and elegant; can you see the smiles on your guests’ faces already?

Smaller parties, fret not. A minimum of 50 persons sounds humongous and scary, but there is always Menu C for you. at S$39.80+ per person, this only requires a minimum of 30 persons. It also boasts a line-up of 10 dishes, and the highlights include Yusheng, Shanghai Braised Duck, Crispy Cereal Prawns, and Thai-style Deep-fried Butter Dory Fillet. We were completely amazed by the dory fillet. It sounds regular and common, but the freshness of the fish was complemented so well by the buttery batter; dunk those slices into the accompanying Thai sweet chilli dip for an extra oomph.

MINI PARTY SET FOR A SIMPLE REUNION DINNER

Looking for something even smaller for your cosy parties? You still do not have to cook, and yes, there are catering options for groups like that. Bellygood has a Mini Party Set that is attractively priced at S$17+ per person, and serves a minimum of 15 persons. Fuss-free and convenient, this options works best if you do not need any elaborate buffet set-up.

The Mini Party Set does not come with any setup. The food will be packed in disposable containers and delivered warm to your doorstep. No hassle, nothing to clean up, no tear-down time; just a delicious meal cooked to order, and ready to eat. We actually really like this idea because caterers need to remember that there are always small parties with hosts who do not want to cook, and Bellygood is indeed very good for being so thoughtful to come up with a simple solution like the Mini Party Set!

The menu spreads across 10 categories – from dim sum to meat, fish, seafood, vegetables and desserts – and you get to choose one dish from each category. Customize your own, and mix and match to please everyone’s preferences. There will definitely be more than enough food for everyone, and we shall all rub our tummies with happy sighs.

PEN CAI SET DINNER

This Chinese New Year, no more slogging in the kitchen to whip up a feast for your family. Bellygood’s Pen Cai Set (S$338+ for 8-10 pax) will take good care of that.

Pen Cai, or treasure pot, is one of the things that always have us looking forward to during Chinese New Year. A sumptuous pot filled with the best Chinese delicacies… Having it with our loved ones during reunion dinner never fail to make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I will be adding this list to the top of my Delicious page. Given that it’s already April, that means on average, I need to check out at least one buffet restaurant each month. Get going, save up for the indulgence and report back to me every time you ticked off a restaurant off this list.
