Beer aficionados have truly been spoilt with so many new craft beer establishments popping up all over the island in the recent years. Varieties and different styles of craft beer from all over the world number in the thousands—from American IPAs to Taiwanese fruit beers. It is almost impossible to try every single one of them within a lifetime.

While many of the craft beers you find in supermarkets nowadays are predominantly foreign—from either the USA, UK or other European countries—there are in fact, many Singaporean breweries that have been crafting some interesting brews of their own.

Want to get a taste of crafty local lagers? Here’s a round-up of our favourite Singapore craft beer breweries you can totally be proud of.

ARCHIPELAGO BREWERY

While the Archipelago Brewery has quite a long history that dates back to 1933, it was reopened by Singaporean owners in 2006 who started to brew craft beers in small batches. Currently, they are still experimenting on small batches of 200 litres.

Some of their popular craft beers that can be found at numerous bars include their Bohemian Lager, Summer IPA (perfect to combat the Singapore heat) as well as latest Singapore Blonde Ale that is brewed with crushed calamansi and pandan leaves for a refreshing hit that many local palates will agree with.

BREWLANDER & CO.

Paying homage to classic beer styles, Brewlander & Co. is all about fun, excitement and a sense of humour, so you can expect their brews to be quirky but at the same time mighty delicious. They are Singapore’s first gipsy brewery, which simply refers to a brewery that borrows a facility from another brewery to brew their own craft beers.

Currently, they offer four bottled beers (all named after emotions)—the Courage double IPA, the Love wild IPA, the Hope summer ale, and the Pride saison.

BREWERKZ MICROBREWERY

Brewerkz—an internationally respected operator of restaurants and microbreweries, as well as a pioneer of the microbrew movement in Singapore—is one of the region’s largest craft brewers. Founded in 1997, this local microbrewery has many award-winning handcrafted beers to its name.

The bar-restaurant concept offers six unique beers referencing British, European, and American styles. One of our personal favourites is their Mad Bee Honey Ale. Boasting an amber hue, this particular beer is relatively light yet offers a dry, hoppy mouthful with an underlying sweetness derived from Thai wildflower honey—perfect for novice beer drinkers.

REDDOT BREWHOUSE

If RedDot Brewhouse has not gotten your attention yet, we are sure that their popular Green Monster Lager is bound to get heads turning. While green beer may seem more of a theatrical stunt, the good folks at RedDot are actually serious about this unorthodox brew.

What it is is essentially lager beer that is infused with green spirulina—a type of algae that is a popular supplement due to it containing a number of health-promoting properties.
