We were there in late July 2014 and the situation hasn’t improved despite the Thai media claiming that the army was cracking down on the taxi mafia. Hopefully the situation will improve soon.

The local media was quick to trumpet the army’s crackdown on the taxi mafia in the wake of their seizure of power – an example of which can be seen here in a CNN op-ed: http://edition.cnn.com/2014/08/07/travel/phuket-beaches-opinion/ – which, of course, doesn’t mean much given the country’s current censorship regime as well as organised crime’s resilient nature.
