We were staying in Vernazza two years ago in July. The place is stunning and def worth of going there, however I would not suggest Vernazza to stay. There are no hotels and rooms are very simple (which is fine) but summer is super hot and absence of AC seriously affecting. Dont get me wrong, I quite enjoyed the place but heat of the place exhausted us in few days. Moreover, its very local place and there is specific timings when the food served so you will be hungry will be seriously disappointed as the cafes would be closed at this time, or else maybe you will be able to have a last drink. .. ohh and lunch also before 12.00 pm. From 12.00 to 19.00 you wont find food , if you are lucky maybe you will be able to have snack (sandwich/if you are lucky...;)

I stayed in the same hotel, Punta Mesco when I visited in May 2009. The hotel owner was very friendly and helpful, there is also a 5% discount if you pay by cash.

I did the treks of the 5 villages from Monterosso to Riomaggiore and it was totally worthwhile, the scenery was breathtaking!

It is very easy to get to Cinque Terre, just take the local train from La Spezia Centrale, its quite a short train ride, probably around 15-20 minutes. La Spezia is very accessible from Florence, think the train ride from Florence to La Spezia Centrale takes about 2 hours.
