"Agreed! It’s interesting to note that Straits Times now fervently highlights at the end of each food review that the Straits Times paid for the meals and not the restaurants. But I’m sure the reporters didn’t pay for the meals out of their own pockets!"

The company pays for it because why should they pay for their own meals when it's part of their job? They're not there for fun to cackle with a bunch of friends. These are professionals and you should learn the difference.

There are always stupid uptight people who worry so much about sponsored food reviews.

Sponsored food reviewers are just the freelance copy-writers and photographers.

Blog readers just want to see the pictures of the food and basic descriptions before going to try it for themselves.

Restaurants still have to satisfy the customers or they will close down.

It is the small-minded uptight perfectionists losers who worry too much about things needing to be extremely accurate. They need to get in touch with the real world and realize that things are not always accurate.

As much as you try to maintain a general fair and indifferent quality throughout, there will always be instances where the food is better for you then it is for other people. You claim you wait a little longer for some restaurants, but the truth is, you're easily recognized and the chefs will always try to pay special attention to you and the food being prepared. It's unavoidable and thus, while I find your blog irresistible and very extensive, some of its reviews seem a little biased. And no, tasting sessions are not always the same for newspaper and magazine journalists. Any food critic in the United States - at least the good ones from Craig Claiborne, AJ Liebling, Ruth Reichl, Jonathan Gold and Corby Kummer - all try to remain as anonymous as possible, whether that is putting on elaborate disguises, signing under a different name, and paying in cash, it is all done for integrity. When Ruth Reichl was recognized at Daniel Restaurant (the flagship NYC branch with 3 michelin stars) the rasberries were automatically more plump and everything else seemed engorged with more truffles and caviar. Same deal when Tony Bourdain paid a visit to Per Se (Thomas Keller), but he made it clear he was NOT doing a review. Now I know one shouldn't bother with that as a blogger, but because bloggers are starting to get so recognized and respected in the restaurant realm, I feel that one has to take reviews through free meals with a grain of salt. I respect your blog, but I just feel like the integrity of food bloggers here (not just yourself) is sometimes compromised. And the same goes for Wong Ah Yoke, who seems to think that splashing his photo in the review of restaurants every Sunday will guarantee him that special treatment, extra helpings of food, etc. Him , I do not respect. Not just his lack of expertise for non-Asian food but his 4.5 starred view of Guy Savoy. What a disgrace.

PS: I mean no offence to bloggers, and I still think your blog kicks-ass, particularly those informative lists.

Thank you for this interesting post and the great photos. I have no problems with these kind of reviews. After all the restaurants can have their own forums to show their meal, food in a well organized manner... and you are right, they have to carry on quality to survive on a long run.
