Fatboys The Burger Bar is a burger place in Singapore that serves comfort food, burgers, milkshakes and floats. I will get to that in a while, but now I want to tell you more about what I think of burgers, in general.

Before I started this Singapore Food Blog, I thought that burgers only came from fast food restaurants. Can you believe that I spent the first two decades of my life having only them? That’s not all, I was also convinced that they were the definition of good burgers.

Learning that burgers were more than the ones from fast food restaurants had a strange impact on me, it made me think twice about everything in life. It was like learning from the beauty blogger about how much make up can do. I think it’s definitely easier to be a guy where we can just have our burgers in peace, without worrying about smudged lipstick.

Thankfully, I started to explore different food places and had my fair share of good burgers in the recent years. It was the Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen’s burger that changed my perception of how a cheap and good burger should be.

The burger that I had from Fatboys Burger Bar Upper Thomson road was a while back. It was a quick dinner before my TV interview at Mediacorp, so I didn’t want to gorge myself silly.

I shuddered at the thought of double beef patties, extra thick bacon, cheddar cheese, and a fried egg — that’s how big the Fat Basterd is! So instead of the popular Fat Basterd ($15), I went for the Wimpy burger (which is half of the former). For 11 bucks, you get a reasonable beef patty and the other ingredients, which isn’t a bad deal at all.

I’m not sure if it’s the same for you, but for my family, we hardly have soft drinks at home, unless it’s the festive holidays like Chinese new year or Christmas. Not that I’m complaining anyway, I very much prefer to have soy milk, fruit juice and milk. But when it comes to having a burger, I think nothing beats a glass of cold icy coke. Nobody can deny the fact that burger & coke are the perfect couple – they are meant to be together.

Nursing a hangover from the party last night? Have a burger for breakfast. Frustrated with work for the whole morning? The burger is the perfect choice for lunch. Feeling hungry but it’s not yet dinner time? Easy, have a burger. Hungry and tired after a busy day?

My dear, you need a burger.

* * *

I’m not saying the Fatboys Burger is fantastic, I’m just telling you that they are very decent for the price. The best burger in Singapore? Maybe, maybe not. Go try it for yourself. If I’m in the Upper Thomson or Mohamed Sultan road area, I can definitely see myself going back to Fatboys Burger Bar again to build my own burger.

I’m pregnant. Or at least I think I should be. Otherwise how else do you explain the fact that I’m constantly craving for food? Of course guys don’t get pregnant, so there must be worms inside my stomach. Okay I shall stop here before the whole controversial topic gets out of hand.

Anyway, I’ve been craving for dim for some time now. Fine, I lie. I’m always craving for dim sum. For those of you who have read my blog long enough, you’ll know that char siew sou and egg tarts are among my favourite. But this time, I was actually pining for custard bun.

And that’s the only reason I come to Peach Garden!

I swear that they’ve the best Custard buns ($3.60 for 3) among the ones that I’ve tried so far. The molten lava custard flowed out when I poked a hole in the bun, with a hint of salted egg yoke, the yellow custards within the tiny, soft, pillowy buns were SO GOOD! We ordered two each, and still it wasn’t enough. I will come back to Peach Garden just to takeaway their custard buns.

We couldn’t resist not ordering the Peking duck, and the slight promotion at $48 instead of the usual $60 helped too. The crispy skin was thinly sliced and placed within the pancake; every piece was drenched with some sweet sauce, and served with spring onion. One piece each, definitely wasn’t enough. The second dish was done with the ee-fu noodle ($10), shreds of duck meat fried to greatly enhance the flavour of noodle, with the remaining of the duck in the form of two delicious drumsticks. Crisping on the surface with the legs and everything intact, coated golden reddish-brown. They look good. They smell good. I love duck drumsticks, they are so sinful, and good. I’ll take up the whole thing, gnaw it right to the bones and not waste every bit. Delicious.

The branch at Novena does not have their full dim sum menu during weekdays, so in the end we only manage to try about 5 dim sum. It was maddening that’s all we got when I’m craving for the whole array of dim sum. The beancurd roll ($3.60 for 3) was like the typical ones, prawn fillings wrapped within beancurd skin and seaweed.

In dim sum context, I crown Siew Mai as the king, and Har Gau ($3.90 for 3) as the queen. But somehow I do not enjoy eating Har Gau anymore, well it’s just prawn wrapped inside skin isn’t it? I know how much effort the chefs put in to make each and every piece of har gau, but still, I couldn’t help feeling that way. Give me my char siew sou, give me my egg tarts.

Honey, they shrink the phoenix prawns!

I remember the prawns on top of the Siew Mai ($3.90 for 3) here used to be much bigger. Well even though the prawns were downsized, but the siew mai was still prawny with a crunchy bite.

A messy affair. Always the case when we have the deep-fried prawns wrapped in vermicelli ($2.40 for 3).

* * *

It has been a while since my last visit to Peach Garden, and honestly I only remember them for the XO carrot cake ($10), and their wonderful custard buns. We didn’t have the carrot cake this time round since I felt that while it’s good, but it definitely didn’t justify the hefty price tag. I will come here, just for their custard buns (Nai wang bao).

Hankook Rice Cake House is under the same management with the popular Auntie Kim’s Korean Restaurant which is on the same stretch of road at Upper Thomson.

After finishing our meal at Chicken House, and Ritz Apple Strudel, my friend and i saw this shop across the street so we decided to venture there to check the place out.

Hankook Korean Rice Cakes are featured on the Business Times

The interior of the shop is very small and simple, with some Korean decorations.

One of the Korean Decorations in the shop

Hankook Rice Cake house sell quite a variety of rice cakes, there are also samples available on the table for tasting. We tried a few of them, but to tell the truth, Korean rice cakes are not really to our liking, or rather we can’t really appreciate the beauty of it.

But because we have tried their samples, we felt rather guilty if we just walk out of the shop, so my friend decided to buy a box of rice cake for take-away.

If i didn’t really remember wrongly, these are pumpkim with nuts, seeds, and raisins fillings. Please correct me if I’m wrong. One box is in the range of 6 bucks.

Hankook Rice Cake sell rather authentic korean rice cakes, even though i’m no fan of it, but to open a shop just to sell rice cake, we should applause the owner for that!

Ritz apple strudel & cafe has been around for quite some time, but it’s until now then i got the chance to actually try out their strudel which they are famous for.

We went to Ritz apple at Upper Thomson, the outlet is just a stone throw away from Chicken House

The interior of the place is very neat and clean, with simple white furniture.

Display of their menu

Durian Strudel mini ($4.80)

We made a mistake on this one, Ritz apple strudel is call apple after all, but we had the durian strudel which doesn’t quite make it. The durian is more on the sour side. Period.

Durian Crepe ($4.80)

Another mistake since the durian is the same. Actually i heard their apple, or even strawberry is not bad, but my friend likes durian so we ordered durian flavor crepe.

Smoothies ($4.90)

The smoothies is quite refreshing, and like the name implies, smoothes the throat!

Cashew Beef ($5.90)

Beef isn’t very good when it goes along with nuts, in this case cashew as we find out. The cashew taste is too strong, which clashes with the beef. In the end we take out the beef and eat without the cashew. So much for cashew beef!

Total bill is $20.40 for the desserts. Ritz apple strudel isn’t that expensive considering the mini strudel is $4.80, i guess go for their apple or strawberry flavor and you will be alright, but please leave their durians alone.

” Apple and strawberry, no durians! “

Chicken is a very common dish in everybody’s meal table, there are so many different method of cooking it. I guess most people will have heard of Kampong chicken, which is quite unlike your typical chicken found in most places.

The normal chicken is usually injected with hormones, to make them grow faster for commercial purposes. Most people thinks that it isn’t that healthy if the chickens are injected.

Kampong Chickens are different, they are usually rear in a manner where they are allowed to “run free”, instead of staying all day in the cages like the normal chicken. The “run free” manner of growing the chicken allows them to train and “strengthen” their legs and bodies, which make the chicken meat firmer and nicer to eat.

My friend had a craving for kampung chicken, so we went to Chicken House along the stretch of Upper Thomson road where they sell only Kampung chicken.

Half a chicken cost $11, and there are also other dishes like internal organs, vegetables, and thai style chicken feet available.

Apparently the store got featured in some publications as well.

Kampong chicken for 2 people ($8)

I guess we can easily finish half a chicken as well, but we just ordered Kampong chicken for 2 servings. Unless you haven’t eaten Kampong chicken before, you should roughly know the texture and taste of it.

Kampong chicken is less meaty compared to the normal chicken, but in this way you won’t get so sick of eating too much meat. The chicken is firmer and nicer to eat!

Oyster sauce Kai Lan ($4)

The oyster sauce kai lan is very normal, not very well stir-fried, we couldn’t really finish the vegetables.

Total Bill was $17.10 for 2 person, we had lime juice as well, which in my opinion is one of the beverage that goes well with many type of different food. The Kampong chicken is good, and i guess not that many places sell kampong chicken in Singapore.

So if you got a craving for Kampong chicken, you know where to go!
