After having dinner at il lido cafeteria, we wanted more desserts as the tiramisu was sold out.

I could visualize it like a treasure hunt, and in our hands, there’s a “Desserts in Suntec City” map. We were clueless about the exact location about the new Gobi dessert cafe at Suntec city so that one was out. By the time we got to Waffles Cottage and Swiss Culture, both places were already closed – and this left us with Bakerzin at Suntec, which I’ve mentioned in my list of Best Dessert Places in Singapore.

I’ve tried almost all the cakes at Bakerzin. While some of them were pretty impressive, the others failed to deliver. But overall, Bakerzin is still one of the patisseries in Singapore that serves consistently decent desserts.

I am not very good at fighting temptations.

Especially not when there is cake involved, and warm, molten chocolate oozing out from it. I know, I should have tried harder, but it’s difficult when I did not manage to satisfy my tiramisu cravings during dinner earlier. The Chocolate souffle was baked up to a rich shade of brown, with a classic bittersweet taste that will break the defense of any person effortlessly. Bakerzin’s Bailey’s Irish Cream Souffle ($8.80) may not be the best chocolate souffle in Singapore, but for half the price of a Max Brenner’s chocolate souffle — it’s good enough when the craving kicks in.

The main role of the ice cream is to make a 9.5/10 waffle to a perfect 10/10.

A good waffle doesn’t need ice cream to taste good. Ice cream should be the compliment, and not the supplement to a waffle. The picture of Bakerzin’s Waffle ice cream ($9.80) told the whole story. No offense to any Bakerzin’s fan out there, but the waffles were downright pathetic. Two thin and flimsy pieces of waffle with a super duper tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream. NEXT!

I hardly eat Black Forest cakes as I do not like the cherries, so I hesitated for a while when we saw the new Black Forest Cheesecake on display.

My hands trembled slightly as I picked up the fork. I poked and tested the surface – it was soft yet firm, and very appealing in the visual senses. Surprisingly, there wasn’t much of the cherries. Bakerzin’s Black Forest Cheesecake ($6.50) was airy and light. It didn’t have the classic heavy and overwhelming taste of the typical New York cheesecake. With a subtle hint of the black-forest cake, yet retaining the smooth and incredibly light texture – it was like having the best of both worlds.

* * *

On a different note, I am quite impressed by the new Bakerzin’s magazine-style menu. There are decadent shots of the food and cakes, and everything was done very tastefully.

I have a dilemma, and yes it’s about food. You see, when I was compiling my Best Singapore Italian Restaurant list, I was wondering if I should include the new il lido cafeteria at Suntec City into that blog post.

Our dinner was good and affordable. but does it really warrant a spot in my top 10 Italian Restaurants list?

Judging from the no-frills decoration, to the reasonable pricing of the menu, one will probably not guess that il lido cafe is managed by the Italian fine dining restaurant if not for the name. All along, I have been intrigued by il lido cafe ever since I heard that they opened at Suntec City.

Thin crust pizza with tomato, mozzarella, ham and mushrooms, the Ham & Mushroom ($13.90) was a good way to start our dinner. Okay first of all, here’s the disclaimer: what you see in the picture is not the right way to have a pizza. It was done intentionally that way to show you that it’s not appropriate to use a fork and knife to eat pizza.

How to eat pizza

1) Never, I repeat, never use a fork and knife to eat pizza.

2) Use your hand and tear off a slice of pizza from the edge, and put additional condiments like cheese, chili flakes if necessary.

3) Roll it up, nibble from the crust, put the whole slice into your mouth; whatever ways that you prefer and EAT IT!

i know you are sitting there going, “Right. What’s so different about about your eating method?” You will be surprised, but there are so many people who eat pizza using a fork and knife! Pizza tastes the best when you eat it from your bare hands, and lick off the lingering taste on your fingers.

It was a close fight between the Seafood Vongole and Spaghetti frutti di mare ($13.50) and we went for the latter. I don’t know about you, but whenever someone mentioned seafood pasta, a picture of the luxurious seafood with al dente spaghetti will come into my mind.

Tomato base > Cream base

When it comes to pasta, I always prefer to have tomato rather than cream base (with the exception to Carbonara). All of us thoroughly enjoyed the seafood spaghetti, or maybe we were just hungry. But anyway, the spaghetti was gone in a flash!

I have to admit, I am a very visual guy. When I saw the photo of the Chicken Parmigiana ($13.50) on the menu, it was like love at first sight. Fine, I exaggerated, but clearly, I was attracted/enticed/seduced by appearance. It looked good, but unfortunately it didn’t taste as good. The fried breaded chicken breast was too dry, and there wasn’t enough Parmesan cheese to go along.

How can an Italian restaurant not have Tiramisu?

We were devastated when the waitress told us that the Tiramisu was sold out, but at least there’s the excellent Panna Cotta ($7.50) to keep us occupied.

* * *

I always have problems when I’m at Suntec during dinner time. Even though there are many restaurants at Suntec City, somehow none of them appeals to me. Even though I didn’t put it into my Best Singapore Italian Restaurant list, I could see myself coming back to il lido cafe. The food here isn’t like amazing, but from the items that we ordered, the pizza and pasta were competent, and for the price, there’s really nothing to complain about.

Which restaurants at Suntec City do you usually eat at?

Ever since I had my first experience of having German food in Singapore, I have been craving for more hearty German fare. Looking at my list of German restaurants in Singapore, I always know that I’ll be going to Paulaner Brauhaus at Millennia Walk next.

I like Millennia walk. It’s in town, yet not over-crowded. The restaurants at Millennia walk are classy yet not necessarily expensive. There’s this off-the-limelight vibe that makes me feel comfortable. The menu at Paulaner Brauhaus is typically Bavarian, and offers Munich specialties as well as popular international dishes.

We started off with a Soup ($10.50) and Rosti ($13). The former was slightly salty and overwhelming, while I’m not a big fan of the latter. Something strange happened while we were having the appetizers. Somehow, our eyes kept drifting to the Sausages. One second I was looking at the Rosti, and before I knew it, the sausage was in my mouth.

If you like sausages, trust me, you must definitely order the Sausage Pan ($25)

As usual, I had problems trying to identity the different sausages. Not that it mattered anyway, since we dutifully finished every one of them. I’ve always wondered if anyone will be able to have a whole plate of sausages as a main. Given that there are around 7-8 sausages with mash, it should be very filling. But I’d rather order it to share. Food always tastes better when you share it with people you like.

We had a problem, and it’s this Pork Knuckle ($29.50) that you are looking at right now. Between the three of us – we struggled to finish it. As much as I hate to waste food, but unfortunately there were leftovers of the meat. The problem was not with the pork knuckle, but rather with us. Warning: do not order a full size pork knuckle when you are dining with two ladies.

I’d be lying if I say I’m not excited when I see a pork knuckle. They are like the sexiest things on earth; deep-fried to a handsome golden brown coat, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside – I will do anything just to have a pork knuckle!

* * *

It’s not wise to have such a heavy meal at 3pm in the afternoon, especially not when I was supposed to have a dinner at 7pm. But you know what? In times like this, it’s best to pretend to have short-term memory loss and tuck in. Always eat first and worry later.

If you are looking for a place for dinner tonight, why not head down to Paulaner Brauhaus at Millenia Walk with a group of friends for some German Beer and Pork knuckles? TGIF, have a good weekend everyone!

And how about a buffet brunch? Excellent, you get to eat a bit of everything (not that I’m a big fan of buffet), and free flow of champagne? Swoon!

I can never say no to desserts, you are my weakness. And we couldn’t resist taking photographs at the desserts section first since it’s right in front of the restaurant. All the petite desserts were waving to me, with the alluring cakes winking and making signals for me to step forward.

Do you want a piece of chocolate?

How about a chocolate tree? I’ll pluck the chocolates off and give them all to you. I know you want the bitter one, and you can feed me the sweet one. The chocolates, they were so good!

And there were a few different whole cakes, crepes, selections of bread alongside the mini cakes and petite shooters.

Rows, and rows of them: mustard lox salmon, smoked salmon, Thai smoked salmon, and an assortment of smoked fish platter. I bet you will just stand there all day and finish every slice of them.

Breakfast to me, must consist of eggs benedicts, pancakes, sausages; that sort of stuff. They had poached eggs here, but there wasn’t any hollandaise sauce, and sadly because the breakfast section was prepared beforehand (not on the spot), the eggs, sausages, and hash browns were cold.

But there’s an ala-minute section where the chef prepared eggs-done-in-any-style. Omelettes, sunny sideup, overeasy, you name it, they have it.

And while you are at the same area, the chef will prepared Vol Au Vent on the spot too. There’s Prawn with Brandy Sauce, Duck Confit with Foie Gras, Chicken Ragout with Mushrooms and Ham & Cheese Ragout to choose from. I’ve the duck confit with foie gras, which sort of reminded me of the kueh pie tee; crispy shells with savoury fillings

The array of seafood selection at Global Kitchen consisted of the typical mussels, prawns, scallop, and there’s Alaskan king crabs too! But it was the spoilt-for-choice of oysters that impressed me! The usual buffet line-ups will mostly just have, you know, fresh oysters on a bed of ice. But not here, there’s so many options, this is oysters at their best!

Among all, the fried oyster with bacon wrap was my favourite; I know this might not be the best way to taste the oysters as there probably wouldn’t be “freshness” left since it’s fried, but you know the thing with fried food, it’s always tasty. The saltiness of the bacon greatly enhanced the whole thing, not that you need to “add more flavour” to the oyster anyway. The purist probably couldn’t accept it since this was akin to killing the oyster, but I like it!

I also enjoyed the baked oyster with cheese tremendously. What’s there not to like when oyster marry with cheese? Fans of oysters will most likely gulp down a dozen of them at one shot, but not me. I had enough after having about five different ways of oysters, and there’s a few other ways which I didn’t try!

In buffets, I will always go for the ala minute food – stuff that are cook by chefs on the spot. And the fish & chips were pretty impressive. For one, they had mashed green peas, yes green peas! It totally exudes the “British feel” of a hearty fish & chips.

And can you imagine my excitement when I saw the chef preparing risotto and pastas too? There’s not much ingredients to choose from, you know the typical mushroom, tomato, but there’s no need for fanciful stuff when a plate of simple and comfort risotto/pasta is all I need.

There’s actually a lot more food, main courses like duck breast, salmon, seabass, beef, lamb, pork loin; in short, something to cater to everybody. I didn’t try all of them, just a bit here and there. Camemberu managed to take all the photos of them, so check it out over at her blog!

Free flow of champagne, amazing company with Camemberu, and Aromacookery, we pigged out for three hours ( including one hour for taking photos), this is what I call brunch! My appreciation to Cheryl and Merissa of Pan Pacific Hotel for hostingus for the media tasting session. We did not eat a lot, just a bit of everything, and yet at the end of it I was feeling sick – over stuffed with food. And we didn’t even try all the things available at the buffet! The champagne brunch is on Sundays from 12.00pm to 3.00pm.

We searched for the button with the 37th label on it, and pressed. Zoom, the elevator, or I preferred to call it the express lift-off, shot up into the sky. Looking downwards as everything became miniature – we were so insignificant. I was actually quite scared when I took a peep. It shouldn’t be, since I’ve been to higher ground before, but still. It always happened. Ding, we reached 37th level, welcome to Hai Tien Lo.

The Steamed shrimp dumpling ($4.80 for 3 pieces) was pretty with the chopped celery giving it a tinge of green.

It must be short-sightedness, but it often occurred with carrot cake. Somehow I always missed out the word steamed, when I ordered carrot cake. So instead of my favourite fried carrot cake, we were surprised when they served a steamed rendition; but it was good! I like how the sauce brings out the flavour of the soft and nice carrot cake. Okay, the full name, steamed carrot cake with preserved meats ($3.90 per portion).

The Steamed pork dumpling with fish roe ($4.80 for 3 pieces) was a piece of art. The curvy lines, with her yellow outfit, topped with the pretty bright orange fish roe.

This was a special, they called it the dim-sum-of-the-week. Sophisticated yeah? It was essentially a shrimp with fish roe on top of a mushroom. An innovative way to do the overdone-to-death prawn in dim sum.

Surprise number two came in the form of pan-fried rice flour roll with crispy conpoy ($3.90 per portion). Well actually it’s not much of a revelation since I asked about the fillings beforehand. Or rather, the lack of fillings. I like the slightly char pan-fried surface of the rice roll with all the crispy toppings. The rice roll on itself was rather bland, but drizzled with the gorgeous sauce; it was good, no, it was tasty!

Since my favourite char siew sou wasn’t available, I just had to make do with the Steamed barbecued pork buns ($2.80 for 2 pieces). White fluffy buns, with sweet char siew fillings, what’s there not to like? I like it sweet, extra sweet please!

Instead of the usual prawn filling, Hai Tien Lo’s rendition came across as the Deep-fried sea perch wrapped in vermicelli ($5.40 for 3 pieces).

* * *

With the to-die-for magnificent view of the marina area, dining at Hai Tien Lo was definitely something that evoked the visual senses together with the taste buds. We chatted, appreciated the skyline, nibbled at the dim sum, drank more tea, and I’m so in love with dim sum! xoxo

I need some chocolate, I need some sweets; to cure my oh-so-painful-heartache. I need a patissier to cheer me up: Tiramisu, mont blanc, creme brulee, macaron, le royale; give it to me, give it all to me.

“A slice of everything on display, and a cup of hot chocolate with extra chocolate.”
“Everything?”
“Yes! Which part of every-thing do you not understand?”

The patissier is my best friend, he will know how to make this go away. Stepping into the patisserie, a tiny part of the gloominess was lifted, at the sight of the so-many-pretty-and-petite desserts.

I sunk my teeth into it, and oh-boy, it was good, I already felt better! The richness of the cake was soaked and immersed in the essence of the espresso, brandy & white rum, I was literally intoxicated.

Bittersweet. It’s all about chocolate. The first taste, so sweet and rosy, followed by the slightly bitter taste from the dark chocolate; the perfect analogy to life, the bitterness, the happy times, it depends on which part you want to taste – I want sweet now!

* * *

(1) The above is a largely exaggerated story on my part, no doubt sweets and chocolates helps when you are feeling down, but it is only a temporary measure. A heart-to-heart chat with a good friend does wonders, and the best part: we had it over desserts.

(2) The two slices of cake are Tiramisu and Chocolate Amer. The latter was a half-price promotional item for Bakerzin in the month of May. The current dessert that is on half-price is the New York cheesecake.

(3) As much as I do not really fancy Bakerzin, and the fact that I’ve tried almost every cakes there, the half-price promotion on a slice of cake was too tempting, read my previous visits here, here, and here.

I, Willy Wonky, have decided to allow three children, to visit my Research facility this year. These lucky three will be allowed to see all the secrets and the magic of my facility. Then at the end of the tour, as a special present, one of them will be given enough chocolates and sweets to last him/her for the rest of the life! So watch out for the Choc Tickets!

The Chocolate room. An important room, this! This is the heart of the whole research facility. And so beautiful yes! Below the melting chocolate wall, are bars and bars of chocolate, 100 different flavours! There, it’s all chocolate!

The inventing room. All the most secret new inventions are cooking and simmering in here. The connoisseur, exotic, double fruit series are some of the ones which will make your saliva-gland start working. Not to mention there’s the classic, nut, coffee and tea series.

Only Brad Brat left. The winner, with enough chocolate & sweets to last him for the lifetime! The dark chocolate 70% from Saint domingue in the spotlight.

***

Chocolate Research Facility (CRF) is a chocolate boutique, which comprises of a retail store and a cafe. The interesting layout of the shop, the unique packaging of the chocolate bars, the intriguing combination of flavours available, meant that you need to grab a bar here! The chocolate are priced at $8, 10, & 12 for different flavours. I brought one bar, guess the flavour!

This post is inspired base on the story, Charlie & the chocolate factory by Roald Dahl. I have made some changes to parts of it, no intention of misusing the author’s right.

Three. It is the natural number following two, and preceding four. It also represents the three of us, the memories; of the fun, joy and laughter that we shared throughout the years. No, although we didn’t meet frequently, but somehow our conservation always continue smoothly from the previous meeting which was a few months ago, as though we just met yesterday.

Friends, are like the macarons you see. They come in all shapes and flavours, just like friends who has different characters and personality. And how long have we all known each other; with each finger representing a year, I count almost nine out of the ten fingers I could afford on both of my hands.

Friends. There isn’t a need to contact with each other all the time. A simple greeting, uncomplicated chit-chats, and a sincere well-wishes, are the ingredients needed, just like how a good macaron is defined by having chewy shells, with flavourful fillings.

Friends, we automatically updated and filled in on each others life, the gossips and chit-chats that make a whole afternoon passed by in a blink of the eye. A place to sit, some desserts to go along with a cup of tea, are all we need.

She giggled, you chuckled, and we smiled. Much as we used to complain about dragging ourselves out of bed on a Saturday morning just for the practice, thinking of the silly times we had, those were the days.

All of us had moved on, to new pasture, and a different world. But we still managed to meet up even though the rest often had excuses to miss our gatherings. Yes, always the three of us.

Bakerzin is currently having their Macarons promotions, selling at a dollar for each macaron (usual price $1.60++). And since it is a promotion, their usual flavours will not available, instead there’s ten different flavours to choose from. We had seven out of the ten, namely; lemon, coffee, Peach, Pistachio, Sakura, Blueberry, and Chocolate.

In short, not all the macarons impressed. We like the coffee, with the strong after-taste lingering on our tongue. The pistachio was chewy and sticky. The first bite of the chocolate was overwhelming bitter, but the taste became sweeter for the second bite. The different macarons have different texture, the lemon and the blueberry’s shell crumbled easily, while pistachio and chocolate have slightly crispy ones. But still, a dollar a macaron is cheap, and you can’t complain.

I was sceptical about choosing the Mango mousse ($6.20) initially. But since I’ve try most of the other cakes available at Bakerzin, we decided to take a risk and go ahead with it. And I must say the mango cake, or rather mousse was better than what we thought. Two layers of thin sponge with thick layer of mango mousse in between. The mango mousse, was naturally fulsome with mango.

With a name like Lavande ($6.90), we were perhaps expecting something more of the lavender flower, but it never came. Instead, the cake was very rich, with the goodness of dark chocolate fudge, and the velvety lavender-infused chocolate mousse. The very subtle lavender flavour in the cake meant that it was simply a chocolate cake, with a slight hint of flower.

As with most tastings, we always leave the strongest for the last. Sweet Pleasure ($6.90) is what my friend call it, my-kind-of-cake. How very true. A top layer of chocolate, jivara milk chocolate ganache, a layer of chocolate mousse, and hazelnut praline dacquoise. All in all, it did seem like a ferrero rocher cake. And having tried about thirteen of Bakerzin’s cake so far, sweet pleasure together with the chocolate amer are two of my favourites.

Friends are one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be. One year technically isn’t very long, and with the advancement in technology, there’s always msn and email to bridge the gap of the two countries. Have fun in the coming months, my friend, my senior, my big sister. The three of us, yes as always, three, will meet once you got back.

***

Total Bill was $37.25 for 3 cakes, 7 macarons, and 3 drinks. With the promotion of getting a drink at $1.90 each with the purchase of each slice of cake during tea time. As you will know by now, I don’t like to repeat visits, but the one-dollar a macaron was too tempting for me to resist. Having tried thirteen cakes on two visits, it is unlikely that i will visit Bakerzin in the near future, but yeah, you shouldn’t missed their current promotion until end of Feburary.

What is the most terrible thing that can happen to a food blogger?

Encountered bad service at a restaurant?

No, thats part of the dining experience.

Taste lousy and not up-to-the-mark food?

Nah, thats also part of the dining experience.

Entering the restaurant and the waitress told you the place is full?

Blame it on yourself who did not make any reservations.

The worst thing, that can ever, ever happen to a food blogger . . .

Is having no camera to take shots of the delicacy displayed upon you.

Thunder never strikes at the same spot, indeed. The last time to The French Stall, LIC forgotten to bring his camera along, and that was an awful feeling. LIC didn’t expect to encounter the same problem, this time LIC did bring the camera, only to arrive happily at the entrance of the restaurant and found out that there was no battery inside!?!

Tsk tsk! LIC shouldn’t taken out the battery to charge and forgot to put it back. A dreadful mistake which must be avoid at all cost next time.

Beware! Warning! The following photos may look awful, terrible, shocking, ghastly, and lousy to you. If you cannot take any of the experience, please DO NOT click on “Read the rest of this entry”

The fatal spot where LIC wanted to take a pot-shot of the entrance and to his horror, discovered that the absence of the battery!

Alas, this post on Kuishin-bo will be short due to obvious reasons, LIC was actually working on Absolute Haven but due to time constraint, this post shall appear before your eyes first. Too many post pending for LIC to write, even OT can’t really help : )

The only “slightly more decent” photo, sushi selections

The sushi are all right i guess, nothing to shout about. Quite a wide selections to choose from though.

Prawn Tempura

The tempura section is most probably one of the place where i consume more, with the exception of desserts (which LIC can’t live without!) The prawn tempura is your normal fried prawn with tempura-flour, it works for me although i pretty much suspect its only decent in the eyes of Japanese food experts (LIC self-proclaimed he isn’t a avid Jap food eater)

Kaminabe paper steamboat

Like what i mention during my visit to Waraku, Kaminabe sounds like a foul-word, it still brings back memories from the last visit, hence the mention. Paper pot, the vegetables, are all there to absorb the otherwise oily chicken and soup. Thinking back now, Beef should have been a better option for Kaminabe.

Desserts – Fruit Tarts

Fruit tarts are LIC favorite! I can pop ten easily into my mouth. The tarts here are pretty standard i guess, but still give them to me!

There are also some miniature cakes around, chocolate ones, mini oreo cheesecakes (really tiny), mini doughnuts in different flavors, quite a variety available.

The chocolate fondue craze might have die down already, but that does not means they are not good. Its just that people forgets easily, before long another new craze will appear and the common folks will start to go after the new hype. Think donut, bubble-tea, luo-han fish, chocolate fondue, well just to name a few.

Total Bill for 2 person during weekday lunch comes up to $46.61 after tax and service charge. Weekday lunch is $24.80++ for adult, and if you Op for the 60 minutes express lunch, it is $19.80+, which we did. I guess the 60 minutes strategy is more to attract office working people, but we took it since we are really full after an hour anyway.

Actually the difference in price is only 5 bucks, if you go for the normal price, you got the luxury to enjoy the buffet from 1130am-3pm, which big-appetite eaters should go for. Otherwise if you are working near Suntec, or like us where you can finish the meal in an hour, the discount of $5 although not much, is still rather substantial.

To be honest, the one hour buffet is rather rushed, and if you are the type that refuse to rush while tasting your food, it is not advisable to take it. But if you know what you are looking for, well just attack those areas and your effort will be paid off for the $19.80.

Kuishi-bo proclaimed itself to be the Authenthic Japanese Buffet Restaurant, which i highly doubted it. Authentic hardly feeds into what they are offering. Nevertheless i believe one sentence should sums it all for Kuishi-bo. Quantity, not quality!

Taste is subjective, if you are not looking for very excellent food, i say the ones at Kuishi-bo are quite decent, and definitely value-for-money since its only $19.80. But if you are into Japanese food, i’m afraid the visit will disappoint you greatly. Nonetheless, comparing Kuishi-bo to Sakura International Buffet, and Sakae Sushi Buffet, i still say Kuishi-bo slightly edged out both the latter.

Many acquaintance mentioned that Kuishi-bo’s standard has vastly dropped from last time, a pale shadow of what it used to be. Well, sometimes you have to experience it for yourself to conclude. I did, which is the reason for my visit to Kuishi-bo. Thus, Yay or Nah, make a trip down.
