Antoinette is a Parisian pâtisserie and salon du thé by Chef Pang Kok Keong, who is one of Singapore’s best pastry chefs.

Sugar Daddy Group – which currently includes Antoinette and Pique Nique – is Chef Pang’s first business venture after a career of working for different hotels and Les Amis group’s Canele restaurants.

I was over the moon to hear about Antoinette Patisserie. Needless to say, I was very excited to try all the desserts. My first visit was a media tasting session and we had the chance to try quite a few dishes.

Since then, I’ve been there on numerous occasions as a regular customer, and ordered various items on the menu. My goal was, or still is, to try all the cakes by Chef Pang.

Cakes make me happy. I want to eat cakes.

Antoinette currently has three outlets at Penhas Road (near Lavender MRT), Mandarin Gallery and Scarlet Hotel. While the French tea salon at Mandarin Gallery has a great location, it is much smaller than Penhas Road.

I’d definitely recommend going to Penhas Road instead of Mandarin Gallery as the latter does not allow reservations and there is always a queue during peak hours.

If I could only choose one cake, I would definitely go for Antoinette ($9).

Even up till now, I could still remember my first encounter with it. The Chocolate Earl Grey cake caught my attention with its glossy surface; I could almost hear it calling out to me.

I took a fork and tapped it lightly, unsure of how soft or hard it would be. My fork easily went through the milk chocolate mousse infused with earl grey tea cake. The only words to describe it? Luxurious, chic, and heavenly.

I will go so far as to say that my hunt for the best cake in Singapore ended with the Antoinette chocolate earl grey cake. It is rock-my-socks-off good!

If the Antoinette cake was divine, the Saint Honore L’amour ($8.5) – made up of choux pastry, rose petal cream, and strawberry compote on an almond tart – would be the perfect representative of love and romance.

Another interesting option is the Chocolieux ($9.5). When the staff brought it to our table, we thought that we were having ice cream as it was molded into the shape like a magnum. How wrong we were.

It was actually a dessert (I find it difficult to call it a cake) made up of dark chocolate cream, hazelnut nougatine, dark chocolate biscuit and almond chocolate.

On my fourth (or fifth time) there, we tried Strawberry Shortcake ($8) and Café Caramel ($8).

The Café Caramel ($8) – an almond tart composing of caramel a la fleur de sel, genoise cafe, and coffee mousse – was well executed, but nothing special.

To be honest, I was a little unsure about the Strawberry Shortcake as I didn’t have a good impression of the one Chef Pang made at Canele Patisserie. It was actually not too bad. I’d include it in my list of best Strawberry Cakes in Singapore, but it is not my favourite.

I marvelled at the Religiuese of Caramel with fleur de sel ($8) when it arrived at the table. It was so beautiful! I found it to be a little too sweet, so you might want to order this to share.

Among the cakes at Antoinette Patisserie, I also had the Exotique ($8.5) – mousse exotique with coconut cremeux and poached pineapple; Pudding Maple ($6.5) – maple flan with caramel, in a cup; and Strawberry Baba ($8) – baba pastry, citrus rum syrup and vanilla crème Chantilly.

If you prefer savoury food, you must try their Chicken Burger, which is one of the better burgers that I’ve had. Besides desserts, Antoinette also has All Day breakfast ($9 – 20) such as Eggs Florentine, Baked Omelette; French Toast ($10.5), Crepes ($15 – 20) and Pancakes ($10 – 15); entrees ($10.5 – 23) like Salad and Foie Gras Terrine; and main courses ($16.5 – 38) which include options like Bouef Bourguignon and Gnocchi Carbonara.

Antoinette, without a doubt, is my favourite patisserie in Singapore. But then again, I am a big fan of Chef Pang, so I’m definitely biased. Don’t take my word for it, go there and try the cakes for yourself. Service can be very patchy depending on the time you are there, but really, who cares so long we can have good cakes.

The French patisserie is a great place for a quiet afternoon high tea. If I lived near the Lavender area, I could imagine myself dropping by the Parisian tea salon every other day.

Apart from the key attractions like the Singapore Flyer, Sentosa, Universal Studios, and the Marina Bay Sands, the most appealing thing about Singapore is food. In Singapore, there are many restaurants serving different cuisines from all over the world, and it is one of the best things about dining out in Singapore.

French Cuisine is extremely popular in Singapore, and we are lucky to have many restaurants serving good and authentic French food.

Here’s my list of the Best French Restaurants in Singapore.

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon

Having a world class meal at L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, is definitely a foodie pilgrimage. As at all L’Ateliers around the world, the fine dining French Restaurant at Resorts World Sentosa has contrasting and sexy red and black interiors, and you can choose to dine in either the casual counter-dining side, or the more formal table side.

If you have been reading my food blog for a while, you would know that I love cakes and I am always on the lookout for dessert places in Singapore. With so many new patisseries, cake and pastry shops opening this year, I think dessert lovers are living in exciting times.

Bonheur Patisserie at Duxton road, is a fairly new confectionery in Singapore which specialises in customised wedding cakes. They also have a dine-in cafe where you can order a slice of cake for a nice afternoon high tea.

Currently, they have an on-going Weekday High Tea Set (before 5pm): 1 cake and 1 drink for $8.5. Otherwise, you can always drop by after work and enjoy the Weekday after 7pm promotion: buy 3 cakes and get 1 free.

We were quite fascinated by the dome-shaped Tiramisu ($6.5) which you see in the first picture of this post. Both the Tiramisu and the Light Peach Sakura ($6.5) had a biscuit-like crust base, and we had lots of fun digging into the desserts. If you like tarts, go for Bonheur Patisserie’s Chocolate Hazelnut Tart, which was pretty good with its crisp pastry shell and bitter-sweet chocolate filling.

Amongst the cakes that we’ve tried, my favourite was the Strawberry Balsamic ($6.5). The pretty cake was deceptively light, with a nice touch of balsamic strawberry.

On my second visit, we shared four cakes: Mango Cheesecake ($6.5), Carrot Cake ($6.5), Caramel Opera ($6.5) and Chocolate Pound Cake ($6).

I thought that Bonheur Patisserie’s Carrot Cake was exceptionally ordinary, and so was the Chocolate Pound Cake. Thankfully, the Caramel Opera was not too bad, with the fatal (extremely sweet) combination of caramel, chocolate and coffee.

The Mango Cheesecake was the crowd-pleaser. With a smooth mango flavour and crusty base, the cheesecake was delightful and not too overwhelming.

The Tangjong Pagar/Duxton area really is a mini dessert paradise. Besides Bonheur Patisserie, Kki Cafe, Patisserie Glace and Flor Patisserie are also located in the same area. So if you are craving for cakes, I’m sure you know where to go now.

I first heard of Kki Cafe at Ann Siang Hill from a friend, and then another friend mentioned it too. I was about to visit Kki, but suddenly, all the media and food blogs in Singapore started to write about it. I am not sure about you, but I am not one who will follow the crowd, so I decided to wait for the hype to die down.

Finally, my chance to visit Kki Patisserie came. After having dim sum at Majestic Restaurant, my friends wanted some cakes for desserts, so we dropped by Kki Cafe. Given that there are so many new dessert places in Singapore, is Kki Cafe worth the trip?

It took us a while to decide on the cakes. Even though we’ve read about the popular cakes at Kki Cafe like Antoinette and Little Red Hiding Hood, we were feeling adventurous so we randomly picked three cakes.

Amongst the three cakes that we had, my favourite was the Emily ($9). Just look at the first photo of this post: the cake had a beautiful shade of red, and the subtle champagne mousse was gorgeous.

The Souffle Cheese ($6), on the other hand, was exceptionally ordinary. It was light and moist, but I thought that the flavour was somewhat missing.

We also enjoyed their rendition of the Noisette: Hazelnut Dacquoise layer with Chocolate & Praline Cream. It was a slice of delicious cake!

So all in all, would I go back to Kki Cafe at Ann Siang Hill for cakes? I don’t think so.

Kki Cafe has very pretty Japanese desserts, but there are many lovely cake shops in the area like Flor Patisserie, Bonheur Patisserie, and Patisserie Glace that have equally good cakes at a lower price point.

Having said that, I think Kki cafe is a nice place to enjoy a slice of cake while reading your favourite book. There is also The Little Drom Store, a quirky vintage store selling all sorts of random things.

Excellent French Food at Bistro Petit Salut

One day, I will be in Paris…

Since I am currently saving up for the air ticket, the closest that I can get to Paris is by having French cuisine. Located at Chip Bee Gardens, Bistro Petit Salut is the sister restaurant of Au Petite Salut, and it is a great option for causal dining if you are craving for French food.

Like the main restaurant at Dempsey road, the French bistro offers two different set lunches: 3 course set lunch at $25++ and the executive set lunch at $38++.

We had two normal 3 course set lunches and for starters, we had the Salmon Tartar, which was light and refreshing – the perfect appetiser to start our lunch. When it comes to escargot, there are typically only two reactions: a) I love it or b) eew snails are so disgusting! My lunch partner belonged to the latter camp, and refused to touch the escargot so I had everything to myself.

It took us a while to choose the main course. You could have the excellent Onglet Beef with French Mustard Jus and mashed potatoes, or the Penne pasta with roasted vegetables, or the catch of the day. It is impossible to not be tempted by the Chicken Leg Confit and the Braised Lamb Shoulder, and it’s hard to say no to my favourite Mushroom Risotto.

We eventually settled on the Mushroom Risotto and the Catch of the day which was an Escolar. The fish was very fresh and well-cooked, it fell apart nicely when we teased it with a fork. The portion was quite small for guys, but it is probably just nice if you don’t want to fall asleep in the office after lunch.

As much as I love risotto, I’d usually avoid this dish when it comes to choosing a main course for set lunches. It seems a little silly to choose risotto when there are meat and seafood on the menu. But I was glad that I ordered Bistro Petit Salut’s Mixed Mushroom Risotto with light cream emulsion and Parmesan Cheese. It was rich, and creamy: thick flavourful rice done al dente, with the earthiness of the fresh mushrooms giving it an additional flavour.

I think this is easily one of the best risotto that I had before.

Amongst the six desserts available on Bistro Petit Salut’s set lunch menu, we didn’t want the Fresh Fruit Salad, Homemade Strawberry Shortcake, and Financer with chantilly cream, so it left us to choose two desserts between the classic Creme Brulee, Choux Buns and Homemade Cheesecake.

We agreed that the Gateau au Fromage Blanc was too good to miss, and since I had Au Petit Salut’s creme brulee before, we went for the Choux Buns with vanilla ice cream.

Filled with vanilla ice cream and glazed with a sweet and thick coating of chocolate sauce, the choux buns were gone before you could pronounce profiteroles. While they were not fantastic, we wanted to end the meal on a sugar high, and the Choux Buns did just that. Unless you are a big fan of profiteroles, I’d advise you to go for the Creme Brulee over this.

The Homemade Cheesecake was accompanied by a mixture of fruits, a delightful end to a great lunch at Bistro Petit Salut.

* * *

The whole experience is just $25++/pax, which easily makes it one of the best set lunches in Singapore. One thing is for sure, I will be in Paris soon, but until then, I will just have to satisfy my French Food craving at Bistro Petit Salut, Chips Bee Garden.

You may want to consider Bistro Petit Salut if you are still looking for a restaurant to celebrate Valentine’s Day Dinner.

When it comes to chocolate desserts, no one does it better than Laurent Bernard Chocolatier. Formerly known as The Chocolate Factory, the newly renamed Laurent’s Café & Chocolate Bar has two branches at Robertson Quay and Portsdown road. Whenever I’m having dinner at the Robertson Quay restaurants, I always find it hard to decide between Canele Patisserie or Laurent Bernard for desserts.

For those of you who are having a chocolate craving, I’m sure Laurent’s Cafe & Chocolate Bar can satisfy you with the chocolatey truffle cake, my favourite Plaisir Sucré, the delicious chocolate tart and of course, their famous Chocolate Souffle.

One of my favourite cakes from Laurent Bernard Cafe is definitely the Pleasure ($9.80). The classic Plaisir Sucré comprises whipped chocolate cream and ganache in between the beautiful and delicate chocolate sheets, and a base of hazelnut and praline; it is out-of-this-world.

The Trianon ($7.80) reminds me of the Plaisir Sucré. In place of the chocolate sheets, it has the dark yet rich chocolate mousse, and the base of hazelnut dacquoise is excellent. Look at the picture on top, the dessert looks so gorgeous!

Having the Chocolate Soufflé ($16.50) may takes time and patience, but straight out from the oven, it’s instant gratification. Once you start digging your spoon into the souffle cup, it’s almost impossible to stop, that is, until you are down to the last smear of the spoon.

The chocolate souffle is moist, dark, rich, and intense while the accompanying raspberry sherbet is sour, tangy and provides the perfect balance to the dessert.

There’s a waiting time of 15-30 minutes for the chocolate soufflé, and like they say: good things come to those who can wait. But sometimes, I’m not so sure. Between the chocolate soufflé and warm chocolate lava cake, I’m inclined to go for the latter – who can resist the magnificent oozing effect? Not me.

Laurent Bernard has possibly the best chocolate souffle in Singapore, but I’m not encouraged by neither the long waiting time nor the price tag. Most people will probably disagree with me, but if I’m craving for chocolate souffle, I will go to Bakerzin which serves a pretty competent rendition at only half the price.

* * *

Chocolate bars are my Disney land, somehow they know how to make me happy. If you are in the Esplanade or Vivocity area, go to Max Brenner Chocolate Bar, and if you are somewhere near Robertson Quay or Portsdown road, then it’s a must to go Laurent Bernard Chocolatier to satisfy your chocolate craving.

Which is your favourite dessert from Laurent’s Café & Chocolate Bar?

I have been eating a lot of cakes recently. Hold on, please allow me to rephrase that: I eat a lot of cakes all the time, but recently, I have been having them way too often.

Canele Patisserie currently has three locations: Robertson Walk, Orchard Paragon and Shaw Centre. It has been a long time since my last visit, but it’s mainly because I wanted to check out the other patisseries in Singapore. Are you game for more cakes?

If someone ever tells you that it is wrong to eat cakes at night — THEY ARE LYING! I bet they are secretly having that slice of moist chocolate-y cake without you! Listen to the food blogger: life is short, and we should always eat whatever we’re craving for. Remove all the mirrors at home, get a bigger pair of jeans, or simply exercise more the next day — everyone should have their cake, and eat it. I can’t possibly imagine a world without cakes.

The Macha ($7) is one of my favorite at Canele Patisserie, besides the Le Royale. I’m no fan of Japanese Matcha, but Canele’s interpretation won me over with its smooth and delicate green tea mascarpone mousse. Right in the middle of the cake, there’s also the hidden chestnut cream, and together with the almond crumble; they were the perfect complement to the green tea mousse.

I never had Canele Patisserie’s St Marc ($8) before. There was a thin layer of dark chocolate cream sandwiched in between the vanilla creme Chantilly. I couldn’t quite describe it, but the cake was very pleasant and likable.

Peanut butter and chocolate are always a good combination, but I didn’t enjoy Canele’s Charlie Brown ($9). It was essentially a slice of cake with 64% dark chocolate cream, chocolate brownie salty peanut caramel, and peanut butter feuilletine. The sticky salty peanut caramel was a good contrast to the crunchy peanut butter feuilletine, but the whole cake was too heavy and overwhelming.

Canele Patisserie is definitely one of the best dessert places in Singapore. If you have a sweet tooth, you must try Canele’s Macarons – they are absolutely delicious! What is your favorite cake at Canele’s?

SweetSpot is a new dessert place at Marina Bay Sands Singapore. While we were at the Marina Bay Sands Celebrity Chef Press Conference, the kind folks at Marina Bay Sands gave all the media a box of macarons together with the press kit.

Macarons are delicious little devils; they are like love potions sealed within the shell of the macaron – released upon the first thrust, making you want more, and more. How can something as tiny as macarons be so intriguing? They are perfect as food gifts for a friend or someone dear, and I definitely won’t say no to the petite desserts even after a full course dinner.

Give me a box of macarons and I will love you forever.

With a subtle hint of the sourish passion-fruit flavor, the Passionfruit Chocolate macaron is the wildest desire — stirring up the lust in me. Hot and cold, sour and sweet – it is packed with contrasting flavors, and the fierce intensity of the passion-fruit with chocolate leaves the taste lingering on the edge of my tongue.

With the rich sweetness abstracted from the core of the twin chocolates – having the Double Chocolate is like falling in love. You take a bit from one side, and I from the other. What is love, you ask me?

Love is biting a macaron and ending with a kiss.

In many ways, the Coconut macaron is very much alike to reality. Unpredictable, fickle, and strong-willed; this is one macaron that’s difficult to stomach. But still, all of us love a challenge for something different. Forget about the common done-to-death chocolate macarons, coconut is the one to get.

Taking a bite of the Milk Chocolate macaron, it is a taste that we are all so familiar with. The everlasting doses of joy, the perpetual scent of the finest chocolate drown in the glasses of milk, the toothsome crisp of the chocolate shell – sinful, but splendid! It has the hidden message of ‘I-miss-you‘ written all over it.

With the pinkish shell demanding all the attention, the raspberry gives it a bit of sour, while the chocolate gives it a bit of sweetness; with the berry providing a good counterbalance to the oh-so-sweet sweet chocolate. Here’s a Raspberry Chocolate Macaron to the love of our life.

Happiness is the Vanilla macaron. It is the epitome of bliss, the recollection of memories, the gathering of butterflies, the meaning of anything-happy, and the reason for our existence.

You are my macaron.

After having dinner at il lido cafeteria, we wanted more desserts as the tiramisu was sold out.

I could visualize it like a treasure hunt, and in our hands, there’s a “Desserts in Suntec City” map. We were clueless about the exact location about the new Gobi dessert cafe at Suntec city so that one was out. By the time we got to Waffles Cottage and Swiss Culture, both places were already closed – and this left us with Bakerzin at Suntec, which I’ve mentioned in my list of Best Dessert Places in Singapore.

I’ve tried almost all the cakes at Bakerzin. While some of them were pretty impressive, the others failed to deliver. But overall, Bakerzin is still one of the patisseries in Singapore that serves consistently decent desserts.

I am not very good at fighting temptations.

Especially not when there is cake involved, and warm, molten chocolate oozing out from it. I know, I should have tried harder, but it’s difficult when I did not manage to satisfy my tiramisu cravings during dinner earlier. The Chocolate souffle was baked up to a rich shade of brown, with a classic bittersweet taste that will break the defense of any person effortlessly. Bakerzin’s Bailey’s Irish Cream Souffle ($8.80) may not be the best chocolate souffle in Singapore, but for half the price of a Max Brenner’s chocolate souffle — it’s good enough when the craving kicks in.

The main role of the ice cream is to make a 9.5/10 waffle to a perfect 10/10.

A good waffle doesn’t need ice cream to taste good. Ice cream should be the compliment, and not the supplement to a waffle. The picture of Bakerzin’s Waffle ice cream ($9.80) told the whole story. No offense to any Bakerzin’s fan out there, but the waffles were downright pathetic. Two thin and flimsy pieces of waffle with a super duper tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream. NEXT!

I hardly eat Black Forest cakes as I do not like the cherries, so I hesitated for a while when we saw the new Black Forest Cheesecake on display.

My hands trembled slightly as I picked up the fork. I poked and tested the surface – it was soft yet firm, and very appealing in the visual senses. Surprisingly, there wasn’t much of the cherries. Bakerzin’s Black Forest Cheesecake ($6.50) was airy and light. It didn’t have the classic heavy and overwhelming taste of the typical New York cheesecake. With a subtle hint of the black-forest cake, yet retaining the smooth and incredibly light texture – it was like having the best of both worlds.

* * *

On a different note, I am quite impressed by the new Bakerzin’s magazine-style menu. There are decadent shots of the food and cakes, and everything was done very tastefully.

Little India is probably a place that you will not associate with French Food, so I’m not surprised if you have not heard of The French Stall, a French restaurant tucked by the side of Serangoon road.

I have always wanted to check out Little India for good food. Other than Indian food like the famous Muthu’s Curry at Racecourse road, there’s an interesting mix of restaurants/cafes in the area like Pasta Inc at Jalan Besar, and Zsofi tapas bar at Dunlop street.

The French Stall Escargot

I always had the impression that Grilled Pork Medallions ($15.80) were meatballs so I was pleasantly surprised when the waiter brought the dish to the table. I preferred the pork loin as there’s melted ham and cheese within it, while the pork medallion was much tougher and didn’t really create an impression.

Another dish that we ordered was the Grilled Beef Sirloin Steak ($20.80). The 200g baby was enough to keep our friend occupied throughout the course of the dinner.

Pan Fried Seabass (first photo), Pan fried dory fillet (photo above)

I had a nibble of both the Pan fried Seabass ($20.80) and the Pan Fried Dory Fillet ($15.80). The former was smooth and tantalizing while the latter had a strong fishy taste which didn’t quite appeal to me.

I don’t usually use the word ‘yummy‘ because it doesn’t tell you anything about the food. But the Pork Loin Cordon Bleu ($17.80) was really yummy! Melted cheese and ham were sandwiched in between the tender and juicy boneless pork loin. The serving was adequate for a person and the side potatoes were very tasty too.

I ordered the Pork Loin Cordon Bleu as I had a good impression of it from my previous visit two years ago. Otherwise, I’d definitely go for the Duck Leg Confit with Pan Fried foie gras ($25.80).

Desserts too were quite a spread. Home Made Tiramisu ($7.20), Dark Chocolate cake ($6.20), Honey cheesecake ($6.80), Chocolate Souffle ($7.20), Creme Caramel ($5.20) were ordered.

When the Tiramisu arrived, I took a quick glance around and pounced on it before anyone else could respond. I’m very easy when it comes to tiramisu, I don’t specifically require one that has high alcohol or espresso content, just give me a tiramisu and I am a happy boy!

There was a mismatch in expectations for the Creme Caramel as we thought it was Creme Brulee. Unlike the latter which has custard with a caramelized sugar top, the creme caramel is a rich custard dessert with a soft caramel on top. With a sweet name like the Honey cheesecake, it was impossible for us not to order it. The cheesy cake layer had a base crust with a subtle taste of honey – it’s a very pleasant dessert to end the meal with.

“Look, look, there’s chocolate souffle!”

I was excited when i saw that there’s Chocolate Souffle on the menu. Since there’s a waiting time of 15 minutes for the souffle, it has better be good right? The first dig of the souffle saw hints of chocolate oozing out, but everything went downhill after that split second of excitement. The souffle was dry and not as fluffy. Fortunately, there’s the excellent Dark chocolate Cake which was deceptively light, moist and a delight to have.

* * *

The French Stall reminds me of La Petite Cuisine at Serene centre. Both places are homely French joints that serve unpretentious French food. Personally, I will choose La Petite Cuisine over The French Stall due to its proximity to my place, and also because of the slightly more affordable prices. Having said that, the fact that a French restaurant is located at Serangoon road Little India, makes The French Stall an interesting place to have dinner.

Ever since Valerie went to Max Brenner Chocolate Bar, she has been telling me: “you must go to Max Brenner, they have the best waffles in Singapore!” I have heard of Max Brenner before of course, it’s the chocolate bar at Esplanade that all chocolate lovers should go to.

It’s strange how even when I saw Max Brenner while holidaying in Australia, I never had the urge to go there. You know how they say sometimes it hits you when you least expect it? Well, that time was now. When the word ‘Max Brenner’ appeared in twitter so many times a week, I know it’s only sooner or later before I try their famous chocolate desserts.

When we saw the picture of the amazing Chocolate Souffle on the menu, I couldn’t help but mis-read it as ‘Best Chocolate Souffle‘. It’s funny how our eyes like to play tricks on us, and with that, we ordered the Banana Split Waffles, and the Chocolate Souffle.

Then everything went silent. We didn’t speak for at least a minute. If you have ever experienced this phenomenon, it can only mean two things: a) the food is so good that everyone forgot how to speak, and b) your dining companion is too busy, desperately trying to figure out how the chef came up with this out-of-this-world creation. We smiled at each other, and the silence continued until we finished the Chocolate Souffle.

Between the two of us, we wiped everything clean within a minute. It was so good! I have no vocabulary to describe it; excellent or fantastic are simply not good enough to explain how it tasted like. Maybe, maybe heavenly is the only word that fits the description. This is the Best Chocolate Souffle in Singapore.

Initially, I felt that it’s expensive to pay $16++ for a dessert. But I changed my mind after having it – I’d definitely pay for the best chocolate souffle every single time.

Today is waffles day – because I say so.

Adrenaline flowed through my body as we poured the tube of chocolate over the Belgian waffles. Although it wasn’t as fluffy nor as hot as I’ve imagine (time spent on taking photographs), the waffles were very satisfying. Both of us had been craving for waffles for a whole week. When the staff brought the waffles to our table; it was like bringing a helpless lamb to the mercy of the wolf – we devoured it in a split second.

Scrambling to maximize the tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream, every mouthful was so gratifying. And subconsciously, we started to Ooh and whoa. Who needs bananas and berries when there’s waffles? Give me more waffles!

I’ve always insisted that every guy should have a waffle maker at home, it’s the best thing you can do for your girl the next morning. Otherwise, please be a good boyfriend and bring her to Max Brenner for this orgasmic experience – I promise she will love you even more.

* * *

We finished both the Chocolate Souffle and the Banana Split Waffles within ten minutes. Chocolate overdose? Definitely not, can we have another Chocolate Souffle please?

Now if you can excuse me, I need to go check out Laurent Bernand’s Chocolate Souffle.

It’s easy to fall in love with dining in the Marina Bay District. Superb view overlooking the Marina area and there’s the up and coming Marina Bay Sands at the heart of the area.

Restaurants at One Fullerton and the Esplanade area that offer the romantic view to couples are a dime a dozen, but it is as Clifford Pier that you feel truly special- there’s only one restaurant in the whole pier.

One on the Bund is a fine dining Shanghainese restaurant in Singapore that is located at Clifford Pier, an area that visitors to Kusu island will be familiar with. Gone is the ferry terminal, and in place is the current One on the bund.

Despite taking over the whole pier, it has retained the old architecture and added an oriental yet contemporary vibe to the whole dining area. Stepping inside the restaurant, it feels like you’ve been transported to a giant museum with high ceilings and exquisite adornments.

I heard about One on the Bund from all the media hype when it started operations back in 2008. Unfortunately there wasn’t much reviews online and I wasn’t really keen to venture here without any indicator on the prices of the food.

They have this huge main walkway leading all the way to the al fresco area at the back. Personally, that will be the best bet if you want to enjoy the night breeze over some desserts. The main dining hall uses traditional dining furniture, and there’s also a noodle bar, private dining area and a small dessert bar area.

With such a grand setting, I had a feeling that it’s gonna be good.

In every way, having Peking duck is like falling in love. I’d watch the chef slice the roasted duck skin one by one, and the anticipation always make my mouth water. Butterflies will gather around my stomach, and it reminds me about the feeling of guessing what the other party is thinking; more fats, thicker skin, more fats, thicker skin.

Best Peking Duck in Singapore

The Signature wood-fire roasted duck in Peking style (S$88, order in advance), I decided, didn’t need the Chinese pancake wrap. I found it to be a pity to put the meat and skin into the wrap when it tasted so good on its own. We were told to dip it in sugar, and it was the first time that we actually heard of this manner of eating peking duck. But apparently after some research online, it seems to be a common way of having the peking duck.

The fine sugar struck like glue to the layer of fats, and I don’t care what you say – this is the best peking duck in Singapore! With the presence of the sugar, the usual Peking duck sauce paled in comparison, and I’m really thankful that Ju, Catherine and Julia don’t really have the stomach for this – I finished up almost 3/4 of the whole plate by myself.

Oh my god: this-is-so-good! I am not kidding you!

If the kitchen is the stage, then surely the chef is the actor and we are the audience that will never be satisfied. More food, more food! The Eastern Sea Dragon ($48) or Braised Fish Fillets in a Chilli Broth is all about the showmanship. The stage was set when the staff brought out their tools and placed it on our table, with a rustic-looking stove, they prepared the water-cooked-fish live in front of us.

From afar, we could actually smell the Crispy Lamb Ribs ($48) and I’m not sure if it’s a good thing – with the thick, gamy lamb smell filling the air. What’s the difference between lamb and mutton? We actually debated about this while having the lamb, and from the quick discussion I came up with a conclusion: a) Lamb is a sheep less than a year old b) Older sheep is called mutton c) mutton has a stronger and tougher taste and d) I like lamb > mutton.

As part of the menu that we had, there was some Chinese pastries. But because I still wanted dessert, we ordered additional macarons, chocolate cake and tiramisu. One On The Bund a fine dining Chinese restaurant, but they also have pastry chefs weaving their magic with the lovely Western creations.

The others were astonished by how much tiramisu I had, the whole slab could easily fill 6 people. It probably looks smaller in the picture, but I can assured you that it’s absolutely gigantic! I don’t know about you, but I think $16 for such a big serving of tiramisu is totally worth the money.

* * *

This is the last part of a series that I’m doing on the waterfront restaurants in One Fullerton. I’ll like to thank Fullerton Heritage, and One on the bund for hosting this dinner.

One on the bund is a fine dining Shanghainese restaurant, and understandably there’s a premium price to pay for the lavish settings. If you are not into Chinese food, I’d suggest the unlikely – go to One on the Bund for desserts. Given that it’s a Chinese restaurant, their western desserts are surprisingly quite good. Bring your date to the romantic Clifford Pier, order some sweets and enjoy the view across Marina Bay.

In this world, not everything that happen will be bad. And I believe some things occur in one way or the other, for a reason. It must be fate that I get to know Cream Puff (C). I remember vividly the first time we met; she was sitting in a corner, dainty, and oh yes, stunning. I hesitated a while, then with the corniest pick up line that I can think of, I approached her:

“Hello, my name is Brad. I couldn’t help but noticed you when I walked by just now, and it will be such a regret if I didn’t say hi. I know this may sound superficial, but you are really pretty, can I get to know you?”

With that, we became lovers. It’s almost like an affair actually, I mean you don’t go around telling everyone about your great love. We are friends, we are lovers, we are soul-mates, we are life companions; she’s the half apple that I have been searching for.

I love you because I know you will always be there, whenever I’m feeling down and unhappy, when we are seeking for some thrill, when I need nobody, nobody, but you. I love you because you never fail to make me smile, our kisses are the best thing ever in this world, there’s nothing so magical, and wonderful. I love you, because I love you.

Give me a cream puff, and I will love you forever.

Forever, till the far side of forever? That was before I met Mont Blanc (M). I’m not sure if this is what you call destiny, but I’m very sure our meeting was a beautiful accident that was always meant to happen. In every way, she was very different from C. If C is summer, M will be winter. The former is full of passion, warmth and love, but the latter is the exact opposite; she’d keep me at an arm’s length and push me away, she’d ignore me whenever I tried to get to know her. Maybe this is why I’m so attracted to her. Man always like to chase, the things that we cannot have – all the more we will try and get it.

I shouldn’t be telling you all this, now it makes me feel guilty to C. I’m sure I told you this before, C is incredible, like really really incredible. She kissed me lightly on the lips, and before I knew it, I swallowed her in a mouthful. I’m not sure if there’s anything on this world that can make me so happy.

But I like M too. I knew of her existence from a long time back, but somehow, she never interest me even though there were countless of opportunities for us to get acquainted. Her chestnut cream, was surprisingly, not as sweet as I thought, and somehow I’m grateful that the chestnut taste was quite subtle as I have never been a fan of the nut. Oh, the dilemma. I like Mont Blanc dessert too.

In between our love triangle, there’s Matcha Chiffon. I like her, in a platonic way. You don’t believe in platonic friends? Neither do I. But we seem to be able to get along very well, to begin with, she’s light, moist and airy in all the right places, and I did mentioned that she’s matcha right?

With this Matcha chiffon, will you please forgive me?

Rainy days are good for sleeping in, but if you are not, the weather makes you sleepy and gloomy. Sunny days are best if you are at the beach, otherwise you probably will be cursing at the blazing sun! I like windy & cloudy day, the breeze simply cheers me up; just like a slice of that very delicious cake.

It took a while before the first of the lot arrived on our table, and everybody focused on the pretty decorations before returning our gaze back to the beautiful cake. The patissier’s hands must be a gift from god – they make everything so pretty!

Honey, would you like some honey? Oh yes honey, I’ll like your honey!

One particular word stood out in the description, “layers of HONEY chiboust cream and strawberry jelly sandwiched within crispy almond dacquoise.” Baby, I was attracted to you, just like bees to honey. And lovely name too, Nid d’abeilles ($7.90).

Why is a black forest call a black forest? Is it because the cake was first created in a forest so black and depressing that it was a shining beacon that brightened up everything? This, was my kind of black forest cake ($7.90); it had very little kirsch soaked cherries. I always wondered why nobody did a black forest without any cherries.

My dear, would you do one for me, pretty please?

The red velvet ($7.90) was completely opposite from its name, it was red but nowhere velvety; the cake was overly-dry. It was definitely a bimbo; pretty to look at, but no substance inside. A real pity – I was eyeing the cherry ganache with much interest.

I always had a thing for rose, you know she’s pretty, cute and even her name sounds so sexy! Even though she got together with lychee, but I’m happy for the sweet couple. They tasted good together, so dreamy, blissful and pleasant! And Oh, how I wish there’s more of the Valrhona ivory chocolate glaze; I’m on cloud nine after having the Lychee rose ($7.90)!

Mango cakes are typically the type of cake that I used to have for my childhood birthdays. For the Mango Mascarpone ($8.90), there was hardly any cake since the composition was made up mostly of the mascarpone cheese cream. It came slightly disfigured, personally I felt that it would taste better if not for the addition of the coconut crumble.

And I will like the cake to have a bit of cake.

And this, was totally my-kind-of-cake! The breathtaking of her beauty seemed to suck the air out of the room, and to complete this vision of perfectness, there was the cute chocolate-film decoration. It would be divine if there’s more of the hazelnut praline feuilletine; I just couldn’t get enough of it!

If there’s a dessert to define me, this would be it, the chocolate praline cake ($7.90).
