If you have been hanging around my food blog for some time, you’d know that I don’t usually eat in shopping malls, or restaurant chains for that matter of fact. The reason is not because I have an exquiste taste-bud, but rather I believe in finding unique cafes that serve better food at the same price.

I have been to Cedele Bakery Depot a couple of times before, but only for desserts. Just in case you have never heard of them. there are four Cedele all day dining restaurants, fourteen Cedele cafe and two standalone bakeries in Singapore. To be honest, I was quite skeptical when I first knew that Cedele restaurants serve main courses and pasta.

I was at Raffles City Shopping Mall over the weekends, and as much as I like the place — most of the restaurants there don’t really appeal to me. We finally settled on Cedele restaurant as it was relatively quiet.

After a quick glance, I was sorely tempted to order the eggs from Cedele’s All Day Breakfast menu (YES they served all day breakfast!), but decided to go with the Red Chili Crab Pasta ($16.90) instead.

It was a clever play on the famous Singapore dish. Sitting smugly on top of the pasta, the tiny soft shell crab was crisp and full of bite. But I didn’t really pay much attention to it. I was engrossed with how the linguine entangled itself with the sweet and tangy sauce, tossed with strands of crab meat.

Granted, the risotto (you mean that ugly-looking thing in the photo is a risotto?) won’t win any awards for aesthetic value, but don’t judge it too quickly. I don’t know about you, but whenever someone mentions about seafood pasta; a picture of us sitting by the beach enjoying a luxurious seafood feast always come to mind.

In every way, Cedele’s Red Seafood Risotto ($16.90) was close. It came with a generous spread of mussels, prawn and seared white fish. The risotto was slightly wetter, and it had an intense tomato flavor which I thoroughly enjoyed. Somebody preferred risotto that is drier but this one works fine for me.

* * *

If you are there for dinner, remember to check out Cedele’s carrot cake for dessert.

The rains, oh, it rains. It is that-time-of-the-year-again.

I like rainy days, I really do. It’s perfect for snuggling in bed, surfing food blogs with a cup of hot chocolate, and a slice of that-very-delicious-carrot-cake.

If you have not tried Cedele’s carrot cake yet, you are definitely missing out on some of the nice things in life. You don’t like carrots? Give them a try first, it’s never too late to split it out if you really detest the taste. The thick cream cheese frosting on top of the moist carrot cake was sweet, but not to the extent of cloyingly sweet – the balance was just right.

Honey, they shrink the cake!

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but Queen C (what I call Cedele’s carrot cake) seems to be much smaller than before, oh well, I’ll just get another slice of it then.

You know I like girls who like their desserts. And you are also aware that I’m that guy who’s a keeper right? Let’s be sweet!

ps: Just in case you are wondering, this is not a dessert blog. It just happens that I have been eating a lot sweet stuff lately, there will be more savouries in the next post!

You may enter. I took small, tiny steps, with head bowing down; we were told not to look at her directly in the eyes. Your Majesty, your humble servant at your service. I have long heard about her unrivaled beauty in the republic, there’s no one else like her, they say. All hail Queen C!

Cedele’s cake is healthy, it doesn’t make me sinful.

How often have you heard about this? Very, often. And I noticed our ladies love, love Cedele; they feel that their cakes are “healthier” than the rest, so they can gladly wolf down a few slices without feeling guilty. Well done Cedele! So how do you pronounce Cedele? I have heard at least two to three pronunciation from different people: C-deli? Ce-de-le? Nope, it’s Sir-deli!

Food, ought to be the most wonderful thing in this world, and food is meant to be shared. When I say share, I mean to eat and enjoy together, not dragging the other party for dinner, and watch him/her sulk while you are blissfully enjoying the nice food. I always feel that it’s a wonderful thing to share food with the one you love; any type of food:

Everything tastes good when I’m with you.

Guys don’t like sweet stuff, at least most guys. I’ve seen this common scene between couples, where the girl totally loves her dessert, while the boyfriend just sat beside, refusing to take a bite; blocking his mouth as if somebody is gonna stuff the smelly durian in. And that’s sad. Desserts need to be savored, that’s why they are call desserts (quote: shirin). And desserts are sweet stuff, they need to be shared.

You know the guy is a keeper when he eat desserts. And I love desserts!

Cedele by The Bakery Depot was founded by Ms Yeap Cheng Guat in July 1997. After spending many years in the multi-nationals, Ms Yeap decided to put her baking passion to test.

The flagship store in East Coast is the first of many more to come, till date Cedele has 14 outlets island-wide.

Cedele Bakery is known for their wide range of sandwiches, delicious repertoire of bread, and cakes.

There are two outlets in Raffles City (I didn’t know until later), one in basement and another in level 3. A friend and i visited the one at basement of raffles city.

I like their concept of self pick-up for some of the pastries and bread.

For the sandwiches, you get to choose from different type of bread, milk bap, oatbran, country white, wholemeal linseed, and organic wholewheat.

Tuna Salad Sandwich ($6)

Savory tuna sandwich with chopped red bell pepper and celery, and finished with a lot of cold fresh lettuce.

My friend chose country white for his bread, but he found it a tad too dry and hard. The fresh lettuces are refreshing and there’s a generous spread of the tuna.

Mocha ($3.50)

I’m not really a big fan of mocha, but my friend find it to be all right. And at $3.50, its really cheaper than your Star Bucks and Coffee Bean.

The emphasis for Cedele is more on their bread, sandwiches and pastries. I applause them for their affordable price range for their coffees.

Chocolate Banana Espresso Cake ($6)

Melts in your mouth, this is a soft chocolate cake sandwiched with fresh caramelized banana, topped with espresso chocolate frosting, and finished with crunchy walnut strussel, oat strussel.

The banana taste is evident in the Chocolate Banana Espresso cake, and the walnut adds a crunchy bite to the cake. But I’m still not quite convince by chocolate banana cakes. Not that the ones here aren’t good, just that chocolate and banana doesn’t really suits my taste bud.

Total Bill was $18.13 for one sandwich, one drink and one cake. Cedele looks promising with its wide range of sandwiches, and cakes. Furthermore, the drinks like mocha and latte isn’t very expensive, price ranging from 2 bucks to 4-5 bucks. I think i will be back to give their sandwiches and pastries another try.

Just for your information, LIC usually does not like to repeat going to a same restaurant or cafe because he’ll rather spend the money trying out new stuff at other places.

But in the case of Cedele, their prices are quite reasonable and affordable, so yeah, look out for Cedele II!
