Note: This post was originally published last year, but somehow it went missing. I’ve deleted the old one, this is a repost with some new updates.

Are you on the hunt for good burger restaurants/places in Singapore? Here’s a list of Singapore’s best burgers to satisfy your craving for a good and juicy hamburger. Read on, you know you want a burger!

When it comes to burger, size does matters. I am a very superficial guy, and I don’t care if you judge me. How many times have I repeated that the size of a burger is important? Plenty. Is it still true? Yes, absolutely! Burgers make me happy. I’m so easily satisfied right?

The death of the perfect burger.

Nowadays, restaurants are placing a hefty price tag on burgers by using fanciful ingredients like the “fabulous” wagyu beef patty, throwing in “exotic” truffles and foie gras.. I’m no burger expert, but in my opinion, the best burger is one that’s simple and no frills, with a good juicy patty and nicely toasted buns, and a slice of fresh tomato and lots of lettuce. Why do you need to fix something that’s good? Just give me a good and juicy cheese burger!

Burger Shack by Island Creamery

Fans of Island Creamery are probably regulars at Burger Shack by now. There isn’t much innovation from the brains behind Island Creamery, just a tested-and-proven strategy that is popular with youths.

559 Bukit Timah road
#01-01 King’s Arcade
Tel: +65 6466 3477

Burger Bench & Bar

The burgers from Burger Bench & Bar are probably not the best burgers in Singapore. However, they are good options if you want a meal under $10 in the Orchard road.

8 Grange Road #01-02
Cathay Cineleisure Orchard Singapore
Tel: +65 6737 9947

De Burg Burger

De Burg has pretty good burgers and most of them are priced reasonably between $8 for the 100g patty and $12 for 200g patty.

Their tag-line is “Burgers are not fast food”, and I agree that good burgers are definitely not junk food. If you are in the Buona Vista/Holland Village area, do drop by De Burg and try some of their burgers.

Blk 10 Ghim Moh Road
#01-78 Stall #3

Epicurious Cafe

At $18, the epicurious burger is slightly priced at the higher end, but it is worth every cent. Add cheese, bacon and egg ($4 for all 3 toppings) for the “full epicurious burger experience”.

392 Upper Bukit Timah Road
The Rail Mall
Tel: +65 6894 5926

Fatboy’s Burger Bar

I had the wimpy (small) version of Fatboy’s bastard burger a couple of weeks ago, and I think it’s pretty decent for the price. The next time I go back, I will definitely try to build my own burger. Fatboy’s the coolest burger bar in Singapore? What do you think?

187 Upper Thomson Road Singapore
Tel: +65 6252 8780

Foo House Cafe & Bar

The burger from Foo House is a monster! My partner and I had it over the weekends, and we were blown away by the sheer size of the burger. It’s twenty bucks after the addition of four toppings (which is still slightly cheaper than the epicurious burger). If the Picardy monster beef burger is priced lower, it will definitely be one of the burgers to beat.

6 Jalan Pari Burong
Picardy Garden Singapore
Tel: +65 6445 3110

Morton’s The Steakhouse

With a price tag of $25 $30, one would expect a lot from the Morton’s USDA Prime Burger. Does it really live up to expectations? Morton’s restaurant, is after-all, famous for their steak rather than burger. Like you, I was sceptical when my friend told me that it’s possibly the best burger in Singapore. Try it for yourself dude.

5 Raffles Avenue 4F
Mandarin Oriental Singapore Singapore
Tel: +65 6339 3740

OverEasy One Fullerton

The “To-die-for” Burger at OverEasy isn’t exactly to-die-for. But it is one of the few places (except 24 hours McDonald’s) that allows you to have your burger late at night, with a pint of beer no less.

1 Fullerton Road
#01-06 One Fullerton
Tel: +65 6423 0701

Relish Restaurant

Relish by Wild Rocket is an upmarket burger restaurant in Singapore. In addition to their original outlet at Cluny Court, they have recently opened a new branch at MyVillage Serangoon Gardens.

The Wild Rocket burger at Relish restaurant is one of the classic representatives of how a good burger should be like. The only downside? It isn’t very big, and that’s a problem because I like my burgers big. Mmm..

Nonetheless, Relish restaurant has a good range of gourmet burgers. While they are not exactly cheap, some of the must-try items on their menu are the bacon-and-cheese beef burger, and the BBQ char siew pork open burger.

501 Bukit timah road
#02-01 Cluny court
Tel: +65 6763 1547

Republic of Steak

Republic of Steak is a pretty decent place with cheap and good western food. The republic Burger is HUGE. For $12.90 nett, the set comes with a drink and one side (choose from coleslaw, broccoli, salad, baked potatoes, mashed potato, fries, potato salad, onion rings, buttered rice).

89 Victoria Street #01-01
Victoria Hotel Singapore
Tel: +65 6720 8103

Seah Street Deli

It has been a long time since my last visit to Seah Street Deli at Raffles Hotel, but from what I remember, their bigger-than-big Texas Burger has a 12 ounce sized beef patty. Definitely a must-try!

1 Beach Road Raffles Hotel Singapore
Tel: +65 6412 1110

Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen

Everyone knows that my favourite burger is the one from Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen, Bar Bar Black Sheep. This is definitely one of the best burgers in Singapore.

879 Bukit Timah Road
Bar Bar Black Sheep

Spruce

I’ve heard so much about the famous Spruce burger, but unfortunately, I haven’t gotten a chance to visit them so far. Is the burger really so good? Maybe I will drop by during a weekend to have burger for brunch.

320 Tanglin Road Phoenix Park Singapore
Tel: +65 6836 5528

The Handburger

Even though I wasn’t impressed by the burgers that I had at The Handburger, you have to admit that their set lunch is quite value for money. They have some interesting creations like the duck confit and portobello burger. With some tweaks to the menu, they could quite possibly be one of the burger places in Singapore to look out for.

313 Orchard Road #B2-17/18/19
313 @ Somerset Singapore
Tel: +65 6509 6214

* * *

Which is the best burger in Singapore? And where are some of the burger places that you always frequent?

Bar Bar Black Sheep (bbbs) is one of those places that you would find it hard to categorise. Is it an upmarket coffee shop? Or is it a cafe-bar with al fresco (read: no air conditioning) dining? It doesn’t really matter. Expatriates love the place. I recently went to Bbbs Robertson Quay for brunch. There’s nothing quite like a hearty breakfast on a lazy weekend.

If you have not been there before, the cafe-bar (or whatever you want to call it) houses three different stalls that serve Thai, Western and North Indian cuisine – helmed by independent chefs. And of course, there’s a bar where you can get some drinks like a nice cocktail or beer.

Within a relatively short period, Bar Bar Black Sheep has expanded from its original outlet along Bukit Timah road to Robertson Quay and recently, Boat Quay.

I was hoping to satisfy my craving for a good burger. But unlike the Bukit Timah branch which has Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen (they serve the best burger in Singapore), Bbbs Robertson Quay has a different Western stall – The Platterz. Sadly, the burgers here are not as good as the ones from Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen, and they are also slightly pricier.

Between the two of us, we shared a Char-grilled Cheese burger ($13.9) which came with ordinary fries and home-made coleslaw; Eggs & Toast topped up with bacon, and sausages ($10.9); and Belgian Waffles ($7.9) with maple syrup and chocolate sauce.

I think that the food at Bar Bar Black Sheep, or rather, The Platterz (Western stall) is decent, nothing particularly outstanding, though. That said, I can see myself coming back again. There are not many restaurants in Robertson Quay serving breakfast food, and the prices at Bar Bar Black Sheep is quite acceptable.

Bar Bar Black Sheep at Robertson Blue is situated further away from the main dining cluster. If you are familiar with the Robertson Quay restaurants, it is nearer to Kith Cafe and eM by the River.

What do you usually order at Bar Bar Black Sheep? Indian, Western or Thai food?

De Burg Burger (formerly known as Sunshine @ Carries Cafe) used to be located in a condominium at Farrer Drive. It recently shifted operations to a coffee shop at Ghim Moh. My hunt for the best burger in Singapore led me to De Burg after two of my friends told me that they had very good burgers here.

“OMG Brad, you need to try this. There is a new burger place in Ghim Moh, and they have the BEST BURGER in Singapore.” My friend was so excited that he forgot to mention the name and address. After calming down, he gave me more details about the new burger place, De Burg,

A new western stall in coffee shop that has good burger? I was not convinced. It sounded very Botak Jones-ish to me. But when another friend subsequently tweeted that De Burg (the name of the new burger place) has the best burger in Singapore, I reckoned that there is no harm giving it a try.

De Burg has around 13-14 burgers on the menu (choose from 100g or 200g patty) and some of them are: Crab Burger (Blue Swimmer Crab Claw Meat), Pork Burger (Grilled Aus Pork patty), Mexican Burger (Grilled Aus Beef Patty with Salsa), lamb burger with Nutella, and a beef burger with Wagyu patty.

The highlight of the burger menu is definitely the $25 De Burg Decadence. Grilled Aus wagyu patty with cheese, bacon and portobello mushroom, it is only available on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. Again, it is the debate on how much are you willing to pay for Western food in a coffee shop.

Tomatoes have many benefits and it has become a fixture on my daily routine.

So I was happy to see that the Pork Burger ($8.45 for 100g/$12.95 for 100g) from De Burg had a slice of tomato, and lots of greens alongside the tender and juicy pork patty. A very decent burger if you do not take beef.

With a 150g of chicken thigh patty, the Chicken Burger ($8.95) had an interesting twist in the form of the salted egg yolk sauce. I guess I am biased with anything-salted-egg-yoke, but the burger was actually pretty good. It could be better if there was more sauce though.

If you are an vegetarian, De Burg’s Portobello burger (6.95) is definitely the one to go for. Otherwise, we thought that the burger was pretty run-of-the-mill; the portobello mushroom was burnt, there was nothing fanciful about the vegetarian burger. Okay maybe it is just me, but I find it hard to accept a burger without meat.

Apparently there is a vegetarian burger restaurant at Eunos, VeganBurg that serves tasty burgers without meat. I shall try that next!

There are a few variations of the beef burger on De Burg’s menu. From the default Plain Beef Burger, to Blackpepper burger, and Mexican Burger, all of them use the same Grilled Aus Beef patty with different ingredients and sauces.

We had the Hawailian Burger ($8.45 for 100g/$12.95 for 200g) which came with a Grilled Aus Beef patty, cheese and pineapple. The patty was slightly dry and on hindsight, we should have gone for the 200g patty instead. De Burg’s beef burger was good, but I wouldn’t call this the best burger in Singapore.

* * *

The best thing about having a food blog is knowing the food bloggers from the other countries. I’m always very happy whenever my overseas friends come to Singapore as it gives me the opportunity to play host and bring them around to try the best food in Singapore.

Republic of Steak is a steakhouse restaurant that serves cheap and good Western Food in Singapore. Although I have heard about it from some friends before, I didn’t manage to check it out, and it was a coincidence that we went there for dinner.

When I was in Kuala Lumpur back in November, alilfatmonkey brought me to some amazing places, so when he was in town last week, I was determined to feed him well. But he was on a tight schedule and it was a very last minute thing, so I didn’t manage to plan much. When we were heading to Standing Sushi Bar/Food For Thought at Singapore Art Museum (8Q SAM), we passed by Republic of Steak at Victoria Street and the lure of burger was too much for us to resist.

Craving 1, Common Sense 0.

Given the name Republic of Steak, it feels wrong to order anything-other-than-steak. But I was adamant to satisfy my craving for a good and juicy burger. Seeing that this was only our first stop for the night, we decided to share a Republic Burger, and it was a wise choice (see picture above) because the burger is a monster!!

When the waitress brought the burger to our table, our first reaction was: “you gotta be kidding me!”. The republic Burger is HUGE. For $12.90 nett, the set comes with a drink and one side (choose from coleslaw, broccoli, salad, baked potatoes, mashed potato, fries, potato salad, onion rings, buttered rice).

The size of the deep-fried onion floss probably made a difference to the overall image of the burger, but still, it was a 200gm beef patty topped with streaky bacon, melty cheese, crunchy lettuce and fresh tomato.

How do you eat the damn burger?

First, compressed the burger by pushing everything together. Second, make sure the napkins are ready on hand, this is going to be a messy affair. Third, use both hands to grab the burger, and try to have a bite of everything in one mouthful. If you fail, use knife and fork as a last resort, but warning: it won’t be as fun, or taste as good that way.

Republic of Steak is a pretty decent place with cheap and good western food, I will definitely go back to try the Angus steak ($19.90) and some of the other main courses like Norwegian King Salmon ($13.90), Pork Ribs ($18.90) and Breaded Chicken ($6.90).

Fatboys The Burger Bar is a burger place in Singapore that serves comfort food, burgers, milkshakes and floats. I will get to that in a while, but now I want to tell you more about what I think of burgers, in general.

Before I started this Singapore Food Blog, I thought that burgers only came from fast food restaurants. Can you believe that I spent the first two decades of my life having only them? That’s not all, I was also convinced that they were the definition of good burgers.

Learning that burgers were more than the ones from fast food restaurants had a strange impact on me, it made me think twice about everything in life. It was like learning from the beauty blogger about how much make up can do. I think it’s definitely easier to be a guy where we can just have our burgers in peace, without worrying about smudged lipstick.

Thankfully, I started to explore different food places and had my fair share of good burgers in the recent years. It was the Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen’s burger that changed my perception of how a cheap and good burger should be.

The burger that I had from Fatboys Burger Bar Upper Thomson road was a while back. It was a quick dinner before my TV interview at Mediacorp, so I didn’t want to gorge myself silly.

I shuddered at the thought of double beef patties, extra thick bacon, cheddar cheese, and a fried egg — that’s how big the Fat Basterd is! So instead of the popular Fat Basterd ($15), I went for the Wimpy burger (which is half of the former). For 11 bucks, you get a reasonable beef patty and the other ingredients, which isn’t a bad deal at all.

I’m not sure if it’s the same for you, but for my family, we hardly have soft drinks at home, unless it’s the festive holidays like Chinese new year or Christmas. Not that I’m complaining anyway, I very much prefer to have soy milk, fruit juice and milk. But when it comes to having a burger, I think nothing beats a glass of cold icy coke. Nobody can deny the fact that burger & coke are the perfect couple – they are meant to be together.

Nursing a hangover from the party last night? Have a burger for breakfast. Frustrated with work for the whole morning? The burger is the perfect choice for lunch. Feeling hungry but it’s not yet dinner time? Easy, have a burger. Hungry and tired after a busy day?

My dear, you need a burger.

* * *

I’m not saying the Fatboys Burger is fantastic, I’m just telling you that they are very decent for the price. The best burger in Singapore? Maybe, maybe not. Go try it for yourself. If I’m in the Upper Thomson or Mohamed Sultan road area, I can definitely see myself going back to Fatboys Burger Bar again to build my own burger.

I always get lost in the East. But sometimes, I think it’s a nice feeling to get lost somewhere and you will feel so much happier when you eventually find the place that you want to go.

We passed by Simpang Bedok while on our way to Foo House Cafe & Bar, and someone said that I’m a suaku (country bumpkin) as I have never been to the area before. Anyway, Foo House Cafe is located at Jalan Pari Burong, Picardy Garden off Upper Changi Road. I’m very sure that I will not go to that area unless we are driving, otherwise I will definitely get lost!

We started off with the Veal and Pork sausages from the Banger & Mash ($15.90). The mash potato had a very ‘clean’ taste, so I left that for the others while I attacked the sausages.

“Are the Magic Mushrooms ($13.80) enchanted?”

We had no idea how ‘magical’ the mushrooms were, but the grilled portobello and sauteed shrooms were great in the cream base sauce. It’s a little pricey to pay so much money just for mushrooms though, for the same price we could probably get another main dish.

The Salmon Steak ($18.90) was splashed with the excellent cream base sauce, which complimented the fish perfectly. The tinge of pink was simply irresistible, and I love how the salmon crumbled in my mouth.

The burger from Foo House is a monster! We were blown away by the sheer size of the ‘thing’. The Picardy Monster Beef Burger ($16.90 + $1 for each additional topping) cost twenty bucks after the addition of four toppings (Bacon, egg, caramelized onions and mushroom). Oh yes, I have included it in my list of Singapore’s Best Burgers.

This is a combination of greed and lust.

I preferred the Salmon Steak to the Pan Seared Seabass ($16.90), but the rest enjoyed both fishes thoroughly.

My partner had the Seafood Spaghetti ($19.90), which came with a generous serving of mussels, shrimps, and calamari. The pasta made me really happy. I know this might sound a little exaggerating, but it was like being kissed. Okay, maybe not. Nothing in this world can give you the same feeling as a kiss, but we really like the spaghetti.

We wrecked havoc on the Apple Crumble that was topped with a scoop of cold creamy ice cream. It was disappointing, and thankfully there was another dessert to keep us occupied.

Deep-Fried Mars Bar! OH MY GOD!

Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with your eyesight, you read that correctly. Deep-fried Mars Bar. How on earth did someone come up with this genius invention? Deep-fried food always taste good, and Mars bar is just Mars bar; there’s no need to say how good it is. When you put both of them together, and add another scoop of ice cream beside it — Dear whoever in charge of guilt, I have sinned.

* * *

Foo House serves big portions of Western food at reasonable pricing, if you are looking for good food in the East of Singapore, do give them a try!

There was quite a stir in the Singapore food scene when Chef Willin Low of Wild Rocket and Relish Restaurant opened Burger Bench and Bar at Orchard Cineleisure.

Given that Relish Restaurant serves gourmet burger, it’s only natural that people are curious to see how Chef Willin Low’s latest offering fares among the other burger places in Singapore.

Burgers are always so irresistible.

I could almost imagine how the chef prepared the burger: giving the sesame-seed-freckles bun a toast; doing the beef patty to perfection, definitely not over-done, and not under-cooked; watching the layer of cheese melting slowly over the patty; deep-frying the golden crispy fries and throwing it together with the now-ready beef burger.

After the waitress brought it to the table, I checked out the Cheese burger with mayonnaise & sundried tomato relish ($7.80) from top to toe. Taking a glance to the left and right, I grabbed the burger with both hands and took a bite. The sweet-sour sundried tomato relish hit first. Mm.. Ensuing mouthful bought the two halves of the bun, cheese, and beef patty.

Om Nom Nom Nom..

There’s no turning back now. I chomped down the rest of my burger, and the same process repeated itself: bun, sundried tomato relish, cheese, beef patty, bun.

The taste of the sundried tomato vaguely reminded me of the McDonald’s cheeseburger. The sweet and sour element gave the burger a third dimension, but the bun was slightly over-toasted for my liking.

All the items on Burger Bench & Bar’s menu are priced between $7-8 (burger only). You can add on a side of hand-cooked russet potato crisps or fries for a dollar, or an additional beef patty for four dollars. The burgers from Burger Bench & Bar are probably not the biggest in terms of size, nor the cheapest when compared with fastfood restaurants.

But they are actually pretty decent and a meal consisting of burger, fries and drinks will cost around $11. Once Upon A Milkshake is just around the corner, so there’s always room for desserts after having burgers for dinner.

I was pretty excited when The Handburger launched last year. They were among some of the new burger places in Singapore that claimed to serve gourmet burgers. With creations like tandoor chicken, and duck confit burgers – you can’t blame me for being enthusiastic.

Their original location at Raffles City was closed for renovation, and when I walked by their branch at 313 @ Somerset, the huge promotional signboard for their set lunch was screaming at me: “come in and grab a burger – you know you want one!”

The lunch special (available till 4.30pm) of a burger + side + drink is just $8.80. I’m not sure if you are aware, but The Handburger restaurant belongs under the same management as the popular Soup Spoon franchise.

If my memory did not fail me, the burgers used to be priced much higher. But apparently, they have re-adjusted the prices – making it more affordable for the mass market.

The name of “the handburger” was an irony as everyone in the restaurant was using utensils instead of hand to consume their burger. It’s so wrong to eat a burger with fork and knife. The best way to eat a burger is to grab it with both hand and wolf down the sexy devil. Now there, you don’t really need me to write a guide on ‘How to eat a burger‘ do you?

Burger, is meant to be a messy affair.

For the sides, there’s salad or fries to choose from. The former was earthly and clean, nothing sophisticated — just simple fresh greens with crispy bacon streaks and mini tomatoes. On the other hand, the fries were passable and came with a garlic sauce to dip in. Give me my tomato and chili sauce!

There’s the Handburger Original with a grilled 120g of N.Z ribeye beef patty; the Chicken Caesar burger which has a single baked chicken thigh; the fascinating Pulled Pork Burger with slow-cooked fork tender pulled pork filling; and the Battered dory burger that is made up of a single battered pacific dory fish.

We had the Handburger Original and the Pulled Pork Burger. Resting on a seabed of lettuce, the Handburger Original’s beef patty was grilled and topped with a layer of cheddar cheese. I love that they were really generous with the lettuce in the burger – so much so that I’d advise to choose the fries over the salad for your side.

I didn’t really enjoy the beef patty though, it was somewhat flavorless and had a rubbery taste. Go for the Pulled Pork Burger instead. Strips and strips of pork came with handmade barbecue sauce and it was really delicious! On a side note, The Handburger’s menu stated that the buns were toasted, but it was a little too oily for my liking and tasted more like deep-fried.

* * *

For just $8.8, I felt that The Handburger set lunch is pretty value for money considering that a meal at MacDonald probably costs around $6-7 nowadays. Has anyone tried their duck confit burger? I’m a huge fan of duck confit, and if you ever see me back in The Handburger, I will probably have a duck confit burger in hand!

Because you are readers of my food blog — today I’m going to let you into one of the best kept secrets in Singapore.

Chef Daniel’s Kitchen is one of the latest Iluma Bugis Restaurant located at level 7 of the shopping mall’s Sky Garden. For just $10.50, the 3 course set lunch at Chef Daniel’s Kitchen ought to be one of the best value for money lunches in Singapore. Everyone starts a soup of the day with herbed bread, a main course from more than 15 choices to choose from, and a dessert of the day.

The choices for the Chef Daniel’s Kitchen set lunch are rather diversified. For a Japanese fusion meal, go for the tonkatsu don, otherwise there’s the popular grilled beef burger, fish & chips, or spaghetti. If you are looking for something different, there’s always the lamb stewed navarin and beef stew.

Prawn & Crab Meat Burger

Portions are petite, but should be substantial for most. Most of the main courses come with a generous helping of fries and greens. Coupled with the soup and dessert, it should be enough to send you into a food coma until the afternoon high tea time.

Coated with a layer of melted cheese, the Grilled Beef Burger was seemingly small initially, but I found myself struggling to finish the whole meal. I didn’t quite take to he deep fried buns though.

The Grilled Sirloin Steak arrived last, and our friend attacked it immediately. “Mmm, very good.. Mmm, very good..” was all that she could muster. “This is one of the best set lunches in Singapore! We really need to come back again!”

Spaghetti with pan-fried dory fillet

For just $10.50, there’s really nothing you can complain about the 3 course set lunch at Chef Daniel’s Kitchen. With a nice setting in the high ceiling restaurant at the level 7 of Iluma Sky Garden, this is one of the best value for money restaurants in town. So if you are working near the Bugis area, grab your colleagues and go down to Chef Daniel’s Kitchen for a good lunch today! Have a good weekend guys!

After sharing a nutella tart at Everything with fries, we continued our rendezvous at The Garden Slug, and having desserts at The Cheesecake Cafe in the middle of the night never tasted so good. We took everything With a Pinch of Salt and now I’m left wondering: what’s next?

I know honey, lets have Thai food tonight! Mmmm, but, but I am craving for a burger too! Two Fat Men is a no-frills cafe/bar located at East Coast road which serves Thai street food and Western Bar food.

Actually, I’m quite hesitant to describe them as a cafe since it isn’t one technically. Lets try again: Two Fat Men is somewhat like a watering hole set in a kopitiam setting, and interestingly, their menu has both Thai and Western influence.

The Grilled Pork Neck with tamarind spicy sauce ($8.90) was divine. Seriously, that’s all you need to know. No matter how much I raved about it, no amount of words would do justice to the beautiful and rosy pork neck, with a railway track of proportional fats running along the side of the meat. It was fatty, yet not cloying, luscious and so, so tender!

The shot of the Basil Chicken Fried Rice ($6.50) was less than flattering and all of us were obviously visual creatures when it arrived on the table.

“Eh, why did we order the fried rice?”

It was wrong for us to judge the fried rice by the plain appearance. I’m quite critical when it comes to fried rice, it’s either good or bad, no in between. But Two Fat Men’s Basil chicken fried rice totally won me over. Every Grain of rice seemed to capture the essence of the wok-hei. Honestly, I had no idea how to describe the fried rice – this was simplicity at its best. I’d definitely recommend you to try the fried rice and the grilled pork neck at Two Fat Men.

Like what I’ve mentioned in my previous post, size does matters when it comes to burger.

In this aspect, Two Fat Men didn’t really meet the requirement. The burger patty was substantial but not filling. My dining companion had the Cajun Chicken Burger ($6.90) which I felt was better than the Two Fat Men’s Beef Burger ($7.90).

After having a ‘main course’ each, there were still room in the stomach and we decided to order the Brats with fries ($6.90). It was an unfortunate closure for the dinner at Two Fat Men as the sausages and fries were run-of-the-mill.

Two Fat Men is somewhat like the Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen of the East. Both Aston Specialties and Everything with fries are kind of over-hyped popular now, if you are looking for cheap and affordable food in the East of Singapore – I’d definitely recommend With a Pinch of Salt Cafe, and Two Fat Men. I’m so coming back again to try the other Thai food!

“The Morton’s Steakhouse Burger is really good!” My friend Mike told me solemnly. “It’s possibility the best burger in Singapore.”

When he first raved that the best burger in Singapore was from Morton’s Steakhouse Mandarin Oriental Hotel, I was really excited to check it out for myself.

Many people will agree that Morton’s Steakhouse is one of the best steakhouse in Singapore, and I know what you are thinking, Morton’s Steakhouse — the burger? Are you sure about that? The Morton’s Bar has always been known for their weekday happy hour during 5pm – 7pm where there’s free-flow steak sandwich with every order of martini. Just in case you are confused, the Morton’s Burger is available at the Bar (not inside the Steakhouse), from 8pm – 11pm for $25 $30 (usual price $30 $35). *they have recently increased prices.

I am a superficial guy. When it comes to burger, size does matters!

The Morton’s USDA Prime Burger in every aspect, was like the perfect burger. Within the softly toasted bun with freckles of sesame, was a huge beef patty that’s firm and juicy and extremely satisfying. While it didn’t exactly had the melt-in-mouth-effect, the beef patty was pretty close in replicating the religious experience.

The additional cheese and topping completed the making of the perfect burger. I love a good cheesy cheeseburger. You know, a burger just isn’t complete without cheese, and at Morton’s bar, there’s swiss, crumbled blue or cheddar cheese to choose from. Other than the cheese, each burger gets a separate topping in the form of of either crisp bacon, sauteed mushrooms or onions, served with French fries.

I wasn’t sure if I should write about the fries since it’s a very ordinary side found on the plates of almost every western food. But good things are meant to be shared, and you must believe me — the fries were really good!

The Four Petite Filet Mignon Sandwiches ($20) pales in comparison to the Morton’s USDA Prime Burger, but that’s not to say that it wasn’t good. With a generous chunk of beef fillet sandwiched in between the bread, it was a good appetizer to kick-start our palate for the best burger in Singapore.

* * *

// Edited: They have recently increased the prices to $30 (after 8pm) for the burger. I’m not sure if I will pay $30++ for a burger, but you may want to try it out at least once.

Twenty five bucks (before taxes) isn’t cheap for a burger, but considering that there are plenty of mediocre burgers that are going for twenty bucks, I’d gladly pay a little more for this wholesome combination.

My dear friend, this is the best burger in Singapore. To quote mike, it felt like we just swallowed a cinder-block after eating the Morton’s cheeseburger, but we would do it again in a heartbeat.

Jones the Grocer’s Confit Chicken ($27.5)

Jones the Grocer brings back good memories of brunch, and I am sure for many friends who have been to Australia, they will agree that Jones the Grocer is one of the best gourmet food retailer around.

Among my list of Breakfast places in Singapore, there aren’t many places that serve breakfast daily. Most of the restaurants and cafes in Singapore tend to serve brunch only during weekend, and Jones the Grocer is one of the few that has breakfast available daily. During weekdays, the breakfast menu is available from 8.30am – 12noon, while weekend brunch is from 8.30am – 3pm.

I enjoyed the brunch at Jones the Grocer, so I was really keen to check out their dinner offerings. With the opening of the new Jones the Grocer at Mandarin Gallery, it gives you the perfect chance to check them out – especially if you have been complaining that Dempsey Hill restaurants are too inaccessible.

Some of the Mandarin Gallery restaurants that have been making headlines in the Singapore food scene include Wild Honey which serves all day breakfast, and the over hype famous Ippudo Ramen which has a super-duper long queue.

Normally, I don’t start with a conclusion in my blog posts. But in case you are just drooling over the photos, and missed the words, dinner at Jones the Grocer is over-priced and under-portioned.

Given that Jones the Grocer is more of a gourmet food retailer, and the food is very cafe-ish; all of us agreed that the food was pricey considering the petite portions.

Seafood & Saffron Risotto ($32.5)

Hey look — they have my favorite seafood & saffron risotto on the menu! Oh look, it’s a whopping $32.5! I don’t care if this makes me sounds like a cheapo, but granted the fact that I paid less than thirty bucks for risotto at an authentic Italian restaurant – I really do not see why I should fork out the extra money at an Australian cafe no less.

Surprisingly the Jones open wagyu beef burger ($26.50) is pretty good. With a touch of roasted tomato and an abundance of rocket salad, the wagyu beef patty rested on a toast, and the potato wedges were really worth a good shout!

To be fair, the mushroom risotto ($25.5) was enjoyable. Made with mushroom stock, every grain of the mushroom risotto was mushy yet not sticky, firm and delicate.

Chocolate Brownie ($6.50)

Blueberry Cheesecake ($6.50)

Trust me, just stick to their brunch and desserts and you will do great. On a side note, I preferred the interior decoration of the new Jones the Grocer at Mandarin Gallery to the one at Dempsey Hill. Don’t ask me why, go down to Mandarin Gallery and check it out. If Jones is not your type, there are many new restaurants at Mandarin Gallery.

I have never been shy to declare my undying love for breakfast. Be it a simple breakfast of kaya toast & soft-boiled eggs, or the Western All Day Breakfast; I love to explore and discover new breakfast places in Singapore.

OverEasy at One Fullerton is an American restaurant that serves comfort favorite food. The menu is refreshingly simple. It consists of popular choices like burgers, sandwiches, pastas, breakfast food, and milkshake — all done the American style.

Scanning through the menu, my eyes immediately locked onto three words: All Day Breakfast.

On its own, the sausages and eggs are probably not worth a second look. But when you have both of them together, the sausages and the eggs somehow blended together effortlessly; the salty bacon enhanced the taste of the fresh and creamy eggs, while the eggs provided the counterbalance to the otherwise over-salty bacon — the resulting combination was something very simple, yet sophisticated.

We were barely aware that there’s the bacon, potatoes, tomato and the delicious sauteed mushrooms in the hotplate too. I didn’t see the crispy and crackly bacon streaks by the side of the plate, nor the slightly tanned & toned hash browns – together with the cherry red grilled tomato and the juicy sauteed mushrooms – they would have to wait till later.

The perfect choice for all day breakfast – OverEasy’s Eggs Skillet ($15).

I am a very superficial guy. Size does matter when it comes to burger!

While OverEasy’s “To-die-for” Burger ($19) wasn’t exactly ‘big’, it was pretty satisfying with the beef patty done medium. Other than the distasteful deep-fried buns (too sinful), the burger was decent with the aided of the flavorful (salty) fries. The presence of pickles reminded me of the McDonald’s cheeseburger. Other than that, a glass of coke, or a pint of beer would be excellent to go with the OverEasy’s burger.

Okay, so the to-die-for burger at OverEasy wasn’t really to-die-for. While it was decent, I had better burgers that were cheaper elsewhere — I’d probably order the breakfast food over the burger on my next visit.

Cool vibe, reasonable prices, decent food – I can definitely see myself coming back to OverEasy at One Fullerton again. Especially when they offer all day breakfast on the menu.

A couple of my friends were at OverEasy for drinks at night, and they mentioned that it’s one of the chill out bars in Singapore that they frequented. Will you come to OverEasy at One Fullerton for food, drinks, or both?

The Garden Slug’s Waga Wagyu Beef burger ($18.90)

Of late, I have been hanging out in the East almost every week. I’ve mentioned on twitter that I needed some suggestions for my list on the best food places in the East of Singapore.

There were many responses pointing to the stretch of restaurants along East Coast road, with Aston Speciality and Everything with Fries among the more popular options there. But the whole area was a little hyped-up and I preferred a quieter place for a simple dinner.

I’ve been to The Garden Slug previously for a food photography workshop organized by Samsung Singapore. When my partner said that she wanted comfort food for dinner, the cafe immediately came to mind.

Housed in the same cluster together with a few pet stores, The Garden Slug is somewhat like an indie cafe at Lorong L Telok Kurau. It serves homely comfort food – think big portions of Western food at reasonable prices.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Rustic Bolognese pasta ($9.90). There wasn’t any fanciful ingredients, just a light tomato sauce created with topside beef and carrot chunks and topped with zucchini. It was a very simple yet satisfying pasta done the Garden Slug way – comfort food in large portions.

The Hickory Babyback ribs ($29.0 for full and $18.90 for half rack) was bright, and hearty. The perfect dish to whet your appetite when you don’t feel like eating, and it’s also the dish to make us hungrier when we are feeling hungry. Having half a rack alone was probably not enough, so we ordered the full rack to share.

Risotto looks like baby food, except that it’s much nicer.

I have a love-hate feeling for the risotto. It’s heavy, yet comforting. It’s a dish that I will want to order every time, but never wise to do so since I always can’t finish it on my own. It’s silly and downright foolish to try and finish a serving of risotto alone. Risotto is meant to be shared.

Subconsciously, I found myself scooping mouth after mouth after mouth of the Grilled Ocean Scallops with Mushroom risotto (on the weekend special menu). I adored the huge chunks of mushroom, and the risotto was somewhat similar to porridge. It’s warm and charming – the perfect thing for rainy days. This is comfort food at its best.

The portions of the dishes at The Garden Slug are big and filling, and the Pan Seared Dory Fillet ($17.90) is no exception.

* * *

Like what I have mentioned, most people would probably think of the stretch of restaurants along East coast road, or Siglap centre when they think of the best food places in the East of Singapore.

If you are looking for a place that is away from the crowded East Coast area, The Garden Slug is a great hidden gem to bring your family, friends or date to. The cafe is simple and unpretentious. Most of the main courses are priced under $20, and I can see myself returning to the garden slug for their all day breakfast soon.

Everything With Fries Cheese Burger

I was joking on twitter that restaurants are coming up with all sorts of fanciful name to catch the attention of diners. We have Mad for Garlic (an Italian restaurant at Suntec that is obsessed with Garlic), Once Upon a Milkshake (the ice cream/milkshake parlour), and now Everything With Fries (but apparently not everything comes with fries).

Gimmicky names are fine since they help customers to remember and associate the restaurant’s brand identity. For example, if it’s just called ‘another Italian restaurant’, chances are no one will take notice of it. But you know, if it’s up to me, I’d totally call my cafe Death by Nutella!

Okay that aside, I have been to Everything with Fries’s original outlet at Joo Chiat before, but I only had their popular Nutella tart that time. Fast forward half a year later, now they have a new branch at Lorong Mambong, Holland Village.

Everything With Fries Lamb Burger

Top of their main course list on the menu is the Cheese Burger ($9.90). All mains at Everything With Fries are served with a choice of fries and a coleslaw or baby caesar. While this is not as confusing, nor as complicated (or comprehensive if you prefer to say it in a nicer manner) as Aston Specialties just a stone throw down the road, there was some problems when it comes to deciding the fries.

Given it’s call Everything With Fries, nobody expects it to have just one type of fries. There’s two types to choose from, shoestring and straight cut – and five different ‘flavors’: Original, Curry, Salt & Vinegar, Sour Cream and Onion, Garlic and herbs.

I’m just guessing here, but they probably got the inspiration from potato chips. Doesn’t Sour cream and onion reminds you of Lays potato chips? Anyway among the few of us, we preferred the Straight cut (thick fries) to the Shoestring (skinny fries).

The staff strongly recommended the One Egg Soup. It was pretty value for money granted that the soup was only $3.90. Taste wise, it was not too bad, with a deep fried egg in the middle of chicken broth. But personally, I’d rather order an additional dessert.

Among the main courses that we have tried, I like the Pork Cutlet Sandwich ($8.90). There’s something about a pork cutlet sandwich that makes it so nostalgic.

If you do not want something so sinful, then go for the Grilled ham and cheese sandwich ($8.90). Lightly toasted bread with ham and cheese enveloped in between, accompanied by shoestring Sour cream and Onion fries, and coleslaw.

For desserts, we opted for the Mille Crepe ($5.90). On it’s own, the crepe was weak, bordering on bland. But when I dipped it in the chocolate sauce from the nutella tart, everything tasted so good! Maybe it’s the chocolate sauce then.

Mention Everything With Fries, chances are people will reply Nutella Tart ($4.90), which is one of their popular items on the menu. For five dollars, I am not complaining, but it will be perfect if it comes with a bigger scoop of ice cream.

* * *

It’s a very simple formula: Decent food + Catchy marketing + Affordable prices. But most places just don’t get it. They either tried and failed completely, or missed out on one of the factors.

I am hoping that the folks at Awfully Chocolate who are the ones behind Everything With Fries (EWF), will not go down the cafe-chain route. It’s cool to have two to three branches so that we can visit Everything With Fries without having to go all the way to Katong, but I think it will be a mistake if they are going to open a dozen cafes all over Singapore.

Everything with Fries is affordable, serve pretty decent Western food and now that there’s a new branch at Holland V, I’m very sure they will have many new supporters in the West.

With so many new Burger joints popping up in Singapore, which one do you go to? I have my fair share of going to some of the burger places in Singapore. I’ve tried Wagyu beef burgers with foie gras, expensive gourmet burgers, incredibility tiny burgers at some of the chic drinking places. But at the end of the day, I’d go to Smok’inn Frogz Kitchen at Bar Bar Black Sheep when I’m craving for a really good burger.

The thing about a good burger, to put it simply – they are so seducing! There’s nothing as sexciting like a gorgeous burger. Some places try too hard, they come up with fanciful names or throw in exotic ingredients, but you know what? All I want for a good burger is: a good juicy beef patty topped with melted cheese sandwiched between two toasted fluffy buns.

And Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen is just exactly all about that, there isn’t any fanciful name – just a simple ‘homemade beef burger‘. Considering the burger is $12 nett, I’d think that it’s very hard to beat them.

Besides their popular Homemade Beef Burger, we also had the Grilled chicken burger and the Mushroom Cheese burger. Having tried the homemade beef burger on the previous two occasions, I was keen to go for the other burgers available on the menu and I chose the Grilled Chicken Burger. It was decent, but not wow. Maybe it was my fault as I was expecting to have a thick chicken patty, but instead there was chunks of grilled chicken stacked up together to form a patty.

We couldn’t really differentiate between the Homemade Beef Burger and Mushroom Cheese Burger since both had beef patty and came with cheese. The only exception to the latter was the inclusion of the mushrooms instead of caramelized onions. Beer goes so well with burger, needless to say, we finished every crumb of it and even most of the fries.

* * *

Maybe I shouldn’t hype too much about the burgers lest all of you have too much expectations of it, but I think it’s definitely up there among the best burgers in Singapore. If you are going to check out Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen at Bar Bar Black Sheep, try to go before 6.30pm as it gets really crowded after that, and they are not open for lunch during weekdays.

Now you need to tell me: where’s your favorite burger place in Singapore?

I always wanted to visit The Wine Company as a friend mentioned that it’s pretty affordable to dine there, and they have two good locations in Dempsey Hill and Evans road. I went to the Dempsey road branch and the restaurant was located on the fringe of the more populated area of Dempsey Hill.

We went during the middle of the day for a quick bite. In my personal opinion, most of the items on the menu were more of finger food and drink snacks, not very appealing if you are looking for something substantial. We didn’t have any wine since it does not goes well with burgers, which was a pity as they had an extensive list of wine to choose from.

Even though it was off-peak period when we were there, it took slightly more than 40 minutes, for them to prepare three burgers, and when the burgers came – we were not impressed.

Small would be an understatement – they were tiny!

Given that it was just $10, I wasn’t really expecting much. But the fact that it took so long to come and we were really hungry; you could guess our feeling when we saw the burgers.

It wouldn’t be so bad if you had a full dinner, and the burger was just a snack to go along with drinks. The beef patty was competently done, but I didn’t like the buns. Fries were average, not the type that would make you finish the whole lot of it. Other than that, I liked the idea of having a slice of pineapple in the Chicken Burger ($10).

I wish I could say we loved this place – with the excellent location in Dempsey Hill, a long list of wine and the charming al fresco area. But at the end of the day, the main reason to come to The Wine Company is for drinks. To be fair, we only had two different burgers so it’s not a good gauge of their food, but the main highlight of the restaurant is still the extensive and affordable wine list.

Update: The Cafe is now closed.

I’ve walked past Society Bar at One Fullerton a couple of times when I was dining in the waterfront restaurants there. I know it’s under the same management of The Prime Society at Dempsey, but for some reason I never visited.

Most of the restaurants at One Fullerton can be costly, that’s why the first thing that struck me when I saw Society Bar’s menu – was the affordability of the food.

Society Bar is a bistro version of The Prime Society. There’s no premium meats of course, most of the mains are priced below $20. The food is not spectacular, but I think it’s affordable considering the excellent location of the bistro bar at One Fullerton.

The Tunisian Braised Chicken Leg Pilaff With Brown Rice ($16.50) caught all of us by surprise. The chicken leg was very pleasant, in the sense that every bite was smooth and tender. It was one of our favorites among the main courses.

On paper, the proper definition of a burger is minced meat patty enveloped between two buns, with some tomato, lettuce, and if you are lucky, extra stuff like cheese and bacon to go along. Society Bar’s Beef Burger ($14.50) was pretty decent, not fantastic – but the hearty portion was enough to satisfy our meat cravings

We could smell the Tiger Beer Battered Fish & Chips from afar. Catherine enjoyed the fresh dory fish tremendously, but both Ju and I thought it was slightly too salty.

After having two excellent pasta the previous week, I was still itching for good homely spaghetti. It was either cream or tomato base, we went for the latter as tomato’s always less heavy than cream-base pasta. Well maybe I was pushing my luck too far, but the Spaghetti With Mediterranean Tomato Sauce, Olive Oil and Parmesan ($12.50) was slightly overcooked, and we couldn’t finish it.

I was hoping that there will be Vanilla bean ice cream when we ordered the Baked Apple Tartlet ($7.50). But it came with rum & raisin ice cream instead. Drizzled with toffee sauce, the combination of warm baked dessert with cold ice cream always work.

Looking through the dessert menu, the Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding ($8) caught our attention immediately. For a sticky pudding, it wasn’t sticky and moist enough. I’d probably like it If I didn’t know this was a sticky puddng. The hunt for the best sticky date pudding continues.

This is the fourth part of a series that I’m doing on the waterfront restaurants in One Fullerton. I’ll like to thank Fullerton Heritage, Society Bar and Marina Mathews of Crocmedia for hosting this dinner.

There’s really nothing much to say, if you want a romantic dinner at the swanky One Fullerton, yet somewhere easy-on-the-pocket; I’d say give Society Bar a try. But remember not to expect too much for the food, they are decent – but not wow. Otherwise, drop by for drinks after dinner to enjoy the stunning view overlooking the Marina Bay area.

Here’s the question: Is food more important or ambience?

January is like pressing the reset button and we start anew. Whatever sinful indulge that we have last month, the seafood feast the month before last month, or even the slice of rich and good cake three months ago; all these are behind us – we shall eat our way through all over again.

To begin the new year, I will like to start with an awesome Home-made Beef burger ($12); it’s best not to resist, you know you want it. I like burgers, not those from MacDonald, or Burger King. I mean real burgers with a gorgeous beef patty covered by a slightly toasted fluffy bun, throw in some lettuce, add in a slice of cheese, and even better if there’s caramelized onion – there you have it, a good hearty burger.

I can think of all sorts of excuses just to have a bite of this; honey it’s just a ten minute drive from our place; sweetie lets not cook dinner, it’s easier to eat-out; darling shall we go for supper?

Fancy it ain’t, but who cares, because this burger is a keeper. The only problem is not getting addicted to it.

A word of advise: stick to the homemade beef burger, I made the mistake of being too adventurous and went for the Steak sandwich ($12), and it’s not because the sandwich isn’t satisfying, but nothing can beat a big, hearty burger. While I did not like the steak sandwich, my friend enjoyed it thoroughly; steak is after all, steak, and unlike the beef patty that is made of minced meat.

There has been a mad rush of new burger joints; Burger Shack, Freddie’s burger, R Burger, The hamburger, Sunshine @ Carries, Fatboy’s burger bar, even though I have yet to try most of them, Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen at Bar Bar Black Sheep is still by far one of my favorite place for a good, hearty burger. See you there!

Tell me, where’s the best burger?

It’s that time of the year again. This is the time when we party & make merry, wear fanciful bunny ears, feast like kings & queens, drown in lychee champagne – and get away with it. Did I mentioned party? Oh yes I did. Impromptu is our middle name, there’s nothing like a Christmas party that is planned just a few hours beforehand.

Darling, lets skip the turkey, uh-uh, no baked ham either. And I don’t want any Yule log cake. So instead of all those, how about the perfect char siew sou, and a fresh-out-of-the-oven egg tart? Even better, top it up with a peanut-butter chocolate cupcake, and follow by a lemon meringue tart. This is Christmas, isn’t it?

Christ-mas is all about gifts. It’s about giving and receiving; it’s the thoughts that count, it’s about the adrenaline when you are exchanging gifts & tearing the gift wrapper; and it’s about watching the wide smile & surprise on your face when you receive the present.

And above all, Christmas is the perfect excuse for us to feast. This is the night when we can eat to our heart’s content; this is the night when we can ignore our waistline, gorge ourselves silly and make friends with calories; this is the night we have a special Vietnamese spread to go with lychee champagne, and countdown to Jesus’s day with a ginormous burger in hand.

We braved the crowd, did some last-minute shopping, feast like a king, drown in champagne, mix white wine with red, laugh like mad, chat like old friends, and wish each other the best of luck for the coming new year; Xmas is all about food, friends & you. Merry Christmas to all of you!
