Five & Dime Eatery River Valley Road

May 24, 2012 | No Comments

Five and Dime Big Brekkie

Located at 297 River Valley Road, Five & Dime Eatery is easily one of the prettiest restaurants in town.

Even though Five & Dime has only been around since the start of the year, it has already garnered a strong following, which is no mean feat considering the number of new restaurants and cafes.

Several of my friends were turned away when they went there without any reservations during the weekdays. And for weekend brunch, they offer three different seating at 10am, 12noon, and 2pm – a testimony of their popularity.

After going there for brunch recently, I can understand why they are so popular. While the food is not out-of-this-world good, I love the dining concept, and I had an enjoyable experience there. I am going to go out on a limb and say that Five & Dime Eatery is one of the best new restaurants in 2012.

Cafe des Federations Bouchon Lyon

Cafe des Federations

Over the years, I’ve read many wonderful things about the bouchons in Lyon, it’s always been my dream to dine in one – which is my main reason for visiting Lyon.

The bouchon, for the uninitiated, is the Lyonnaise version of the classic French bistro. It serves traditional Lyonnaise cuisine; the food is rich, humble, generous, and flavourful.

We managed to get a table at Café des Fédérations – one of the few Les Authentiques Bouchons Lyonnais (certified authentic bouchons in Lyon). It was one of the best meals in my life.

Travelling to Lyon, France

May 21, 2012 | 1 Comment

Lyon

Lyon is a city in east-central France in the Rhône-Alpes region, situated between Paris and Marseille. Many guys have heard of Lyon because of the football team Olympique Lyonnais’s involvement in European football championships.

For food lovers, Lyon is known for a different reason. Widely acknowledged as the food capital of the world, it is a place that one must visit at least once in his/her life.

I am glad that I chose to go to Lyon. While it was a shame that we could not stay longer (we were there for only three days), we got to see the beautiful city, and eat at a bouchon. Below is a short summary of what we did during our stay. Do note that it is not meant to be a complete travel guide to Lyon.

Keystone Restaurant

Keystone restaurant

It’s always nice to visit new restaurants run by young and talented chefs who are truly passionate about their food.

I first learned about Keystone Restaurant at Stanley Street a few months ago through my journalist friends. They told me about the excellent work Chef Mark Richards is doing at the restaurant, and it is one of the few places that use sous-vide cooking for most of the dishes on the menu.

I went there a while back, and ever since my visit, I’ve been recommending it to my friends. I’ll cut to the chase. If you like hearty meals with big portions, Keystone Restaurant is probably not suitable for you. But if you enjoy dining in a classy restaurant that serves refined and sophisticated food, this is the place to go.

Zi Char Singapore

Zi Char (also known as Zhi Char/Cze Char/Tze Char/Zhu Chao) is a term used to describe a wallet-friendly, home-style cuisine from a Chinese stall, which serves a variety of ala-carte dishes and leaves you spoiled for choice. Most zi char stalls are located in a non-restaurant setting like a coffee shop or a hawker centre. There are also some local seafood restaurants which have air-conditioned dining area.

I am still on a mission to try all the places on my list, but for now, I will like to share with you some of the best zi char restaurants located in the west of Singapore.

Brunetti Italian Pasticceria Tanglin Mall

May 14, 2012 | 3 Comments

Brunetti

Brunetti is a famous Italian pasticceria and coffee joint from Australia. Having heard good things about it from my friends who studied in Melbourne, I was quite excited when it finally opened in Singapore at Tanglin Mall.

After my first visit a few months ago, I went back to Brunetti several times and tried quite a few items. Some of the cakes were good, while others were average.
