Pontian Wanton Mee: Not the best in Singapore

Pontian Wanton Noodles

As always, I have been on the lookout for the ‘Best Wanton Mee in Singapore‘, and when one of my friend mentioned that the Pontian Wanton Noodles which has several branches in Singapore, is very good – I was kind of skeptical. It’s not that I don’t believe his taste buds, but rather because having tried the authentic Pontian Wanton Mee in Pontian, Malaysia, I seriously doubt that the local franchise can be as good as the original one.

A couple of weeks ago, I was at Parkway Parade, and for once, I was actually craving for KOI Bubble Tea, but KOI Cafe wasn’t open yet. While waiting for the bubble tea, Pontian Wanton Noodles at Marine Parade Market happened to be just beside, and there’s no prizes for guessing what happened next.

Pontian Wanton Mee

Ketchup > Chili

I love all things ketchup and that includes having the ketchup version of wanton mee. There were three choices of the sauce base for the wanton mee: ketchup without chili, chili or black sauce with chili. Looks-wise, it appeared to be quite similar to the original Pontian Wanton Mee that I had in Pontian. Small, dainty portion that’s hardly enough to fill a man’s stomach, and two bowls of noodles are always a must if you want to walk away satisfied. That’s all fine with me since we were paying 3 Malaysian ringgits back then and it’s really cheap for a bowl of good wanton mee.

Unfortunately, this is SGD$2.80 that we are talking about right here. To be fair, the Singapore version of Pontian Wanton Mee wasn’t as bad as I thought it will be. But the char siew was too thinly sliced, while the deep-fried wantons were too tiny and lacked any substantial bite. The only saving grace was the bouncy and firm noodles, but portion-wise, it really wasn’t enough.

Tell me, where’s the best Wanton Mee in Singapore that you always go to?

I quite like the one at Lavender Food Centre but I forgot what’s the name of it :( It’s damn tasty but the portions are super small!

I was not really a fan of Wanton Mee, especially those in Singapore.

Seems like I won’t be trying out Pontian Wanton Mee anytime soon since you mentioned that it isn’t the best. :/

Parklane Wanton mee @ Sunshine Plaza @ Prinsep street. I will still prefer wanton mee from Msia but this version serves a pretty good version of wanton mee “Singapore version” =)

Best wanton mee in Singapore belongs to angmo wanton mee at katong there, near a school, forgotten the exact address. The moment u pop a wanton into ur month, u will crave for more as if there some drug in it :)

Pontian is pretty good although I won’t call it the best in Singapore.

And I always ask for more noodles. The default size is just not big enough for me. :)

i think you live in this area (bkt timah?) so i’ll let you in on my own best kept secret.

for a person who dislikes wanton mee, this is the only branch that i eat and highly recommend.

at toh yi drive block 16 the row of shophouses? there’s a coffeeshop in the middle? the wanton mee there is fantastic! (only sell in mornings and afternoons)

noodles are springy, char siew is top class and the wanton even has prawn in it! (when i last had it lar, maybe inflation no prawns alr lol)

all in all, a damn good plate of wanton mee:)

alkanphel: I know i know! lavander food market is famous for their wanton mee one! hahaha

Arissa: WHY!?! Wanton mee is like one of the best food we have in Singapore!

Mie: Parklane Wanton mee @ Sunshine Plaza? Got it1 that’s the same place as Victor’s kitchen that sells dim sum right? I think i saw this wanton mee stall which had a lot of newspaper cuttings, should be the same one

hayley: YA! i went there once but they were closed. I think they only open during the afternoon 4pm or something? bah!

Janice: OOH! this is quite close to fei fei wanton mee at Joo chiat right? it’s even better than fei fei? a lot guys call fei fei the best wanton mee in Singapore! i tried it once, it was good, but i won’t go all the way to the East just to have it

Lianne: i know right! but fei fei wanton mee is at joo chiat! Even if it’s the best wanton mee, i need a lot of discipline to go all the way from the West to the East just for it :p

Steven: Best wanton mee in Singapore belongs to angmo wanton mee? Really? wow, i didn’t know there’s a stall call angmo wanton mee! But where’s the exact address, or where is it near? haha

pammiez: this is about the best wanton mee in Singapore, not Malaysia la! lol

dawn: you hit the nail on the spot! i used to have this in Pontian when i was a kid!

Jean: Okay, it’s not at Zion road food center, but rather at a coffee shop opposite it? what’s the name of the wanton mee stall?

Jan: They are call Wanton Mee Specialist? lol! It’s been a long time since i went to Hong Lim market, need to drop by soon

Jeremy: OH I KNOW THAT! Walked by it a couple of times, but never get to try! damn need to go Chinatown, just for this!

DK: The portion was so little! it’s not bad, but definitely not the best wanton mee in Singapore

rachel: i know there’s a famous lor mee at Bukit purmei, but i didn’t know there’s a good wanton mee there too? what is it call?

Shin Yee: OH YES! i tried this one before, the noodles are good, but i don’t like wanton mee with dark sauce. I remember the uncle scolded me when i told him i didn’t want dark sauce. lol he said the dark sauce is the essence of the wanton mee

Fel: Golden Shoe level 2, what is it called?

mel: yea i live in the West side of Singapore! Toh yi has two coffee shop right? is it the one nearer to the community center? okay, i MUST go there since it’s so near my place : )

  19. mel
    July 22nd, 2010 @ 3:26 pm

no! toh yi has 3 coffee shops.. the one right at the end is a malay coffee shop, and two more chinese one.

its the chinese one in the middle, beside the clinic, not the one nearest to the cc!^^

Hi! I’ve tried one fabulous wanton mee (in my point of view) at Jurong East. It is not exactly Jurong East; I think the food centre is known as Yuhua Food centre. There is only one wanton mee stall there and its named Fei Fei (Direct translation would be fat fat). They make their own char siew so it is not the red colour kind. Their noodles are springy too!And also, they sell duck and roasted pork too.

Give it a try! I would love to see a review on it! (:

xy: did i hear fabulous wanton mee? OH YA fei fei, i tried their roasted duck, it was really good. But i din have their noodles that time, will go back for it! did u try their roast duck?

Matilda: i think there’s a few branches in Singapore! Oh, do u mean like two competing franchise?

  23. XY
    July 26th, 2010 @ 10:47 am

Yes! I tried their duck, roasted pork and char siew. I still love their char siew most. I think their specialty is still these meats.. So the noodle may not be so Q. But overall, evth jus matches. Hehe. Another nice wanton mee is at Old Airport Road. But I forgot the stall name. haha..

in my opinion, fei fei and angmo isn’t as good as the one at lavender food centre.
however the one at lavender food centre is less authentic, not what we usually have and with lots of gravy.

xy: your new mission is to go back to old airport road hawker centre next time, and report back to me which stall is it : D

miErocks: the problem with the lavender food centre one is it open quite late in the afternoon! hahah i been there once in the morning but it wasn’t open. have to try again!

There’s a good one (in my opinion)that’s near the junction of Jalan Selaseh & Seletar Hills Drive.

The coffee shop is called ‘Seleter Corner’ and the wanton mee place opens only in the afternoon. Maybe you can try it out hahaha

Hi HI!!! So interesting that you are looking for the best wantan mee in Singapore.

Well, my mom opens BAK MEE stalls, which is the Indonesian equivalent of wantan mee. one of the stalls is in centrepoint kopitiam so its quite convenient.

Feel free to try and compare with the malaysian / hk and singapore style of wantan noodle.

    http://www.jiakbakmee.blogspot.com

let me know what u think. it’s v different from the normal wantan mee though – no tomato sauce or belachan..and fried wantans are huge type. thanks and i’d love to hear from u

Ahhhhhhh marine parade hawker center branch should never be used as e benchmark!

Thad another outlet inside parkway parade foodcourt located at e basement.
The outlet at heeren gets my thumb-up!

Lavender wanton noodle is delicious in a different manner, the sauce is much sweeter and on lookwise, it’s not as appetizing though one will change e opinion upon e 2nd bite! :)

The owner is a Malaysian and When first opened their first stall, the noodle was very nice but the original wanton is normal. Fried wanton is a bit better and Soup is still OK. Fried Wanton is not so difficult to make taste good.
After they start opening the second shop, the standard went down. Now it had became the worse and I never eat there anymore. The noodle taste bad and the original wanton sometimes has bad non fresh pork smell. The fried wanton also slightly not so good anymore but I dont eat wanton mee just for the fried wanton. Fried wanton isnt the original part for wanton mee.
Its so bad when people business becomes big. I never tasted the real pontian wanton mee but I do ever tasted same taste noodle when I was small.
