Dragon Boat Festival – Duan Wu Jie in Singapore

Rice Dumpling

Dragon Boat Festival, Duan Wu Jie, or Rice Dumpling Festival?

Why are there so many different names for one festival? Being the gluttony I am, it’s no surprise that I always remember this Chinese Holiday as Rice Dumpling Festival. Or like what I always ask, when is Zong Zi holiday?

Every year, chefs will come up with new and different exotic flavors to vie for the attention of consumers. From Wattle-necked Soft-shelled Turtle & Fish Maw Dumpling, and Whole Abalone & Foie Gras Dumpling from Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant, Abalone with Dried Scallop Dumpling from Rendezvous hotel, are just some of the new flavors created for Duan Wu Jie this year.

I have quite an adventurous palate for food, but somehow when it comes to the festival goodies like Mooncake and Zong Zi, I still prefer the traditional dumplings (zong zi). Give me the Nonya dumpling and meat dumpling with salted egg, and I can easily gobble down a dozen of them!

Will you pay a premium for it?

Whenever the Rice Dumpling Festival approaches, retailers will raise the prices in anticipation of market demand. I love all of them, but I wouldn’t pay the extra money just because it’s in demand during the festive period. With the exception of Mooncake, seasonal festive food like Bak Kwa and rice dumpling (Zong Zi) are available throughout the year. I’d usually buy them before or after the Dragon Boat Festival.

So tell me, do you prefer the traditional dumplings or do you like to have exotic fillings in them? Regardless which rice dumplings you like, I hope you are having it! Happy Dumpling Day!
