1 Caramel Patisserie: When the dessert-holics come out to play

July 13, 2009 | 36 Comments

Rainy days are good for sleeping in, but if you are not, the weather makes you sleepy and gloomy. Sunny days are best if you are at the beach, otherwise you probably will be cursing at the blazing sun! I like windy & cloudy day, the breeze simply cheers me up; just like a slice of that very delicious cake.

It took a while before the first of the lot arrived on our table, and everybody focused on the pretty decorations before returning our gaze back to the beautiful cake. The patissier’s hands must be a gift from god – they make everything so pretty!

Honey, would you like some honey? Oh yes honey, I’ll like your honey!

One particular word stood out in the description, “layers of HONEY chiboust cream and strawberry jelly sandwiched within crispy almond dacquoise.” Baby, I was attracted to you, just like bees to honey. And lovely name too, Nid d’abeilles ($7.90).

Why is a black forest call a black forest? Is it because the cake was first created in a forest so black and depressing that it was a shining beacon that brightened up everything? This, was my kind of black forest cake ($7.90); it had very little kirsch soaked cherries. I always wondered why nobody did a black forest without any cherries.

My dear, would you do one for me, pretty please?

The red velvet ($7.90) was completely opposite from its name, it was red but nowhere velvety; the cake was overly-dry. It was definitely a bimbo; pretty to look at, but no substance inside. A real pity – I was eyeing the cherry ganache with much interest.

I always had a thing for rose, you know she’s pretty, cute and even her name sounds so sexy! Even though she got together with lychee, but I’m happy for the sweet couple. They tasted good together, so dreamy, blissful and pleasant! And Oh, how I wish there’s more of the Valrhona ivory chocolate glaze; I’m on cloud nine after having the Lychee rose ($7.90)!

Mango cakes are typically the type of cake that I used to have for my childhood birthdays. For the Mango Mascarpone ($8.90), there was hardly any cake since the composition was made up mostly of the mascarpone cheese cream. It came slightly disfigured, personally I felt that it would taste better if not for the addition of the coconut crumble.

And I will like the cake to have a bit of cake.

And this, was totally my-kind-of-cake! The breathtaking of her beauty seemed to suck the air out of the room, and to complete this vision of perfectness, there was the cute chocolate-film decoration. It would be divine if there’s more of the hazelnut praline feuilletine; I just couldn’t get enough of it!

If there’s a dessert to define me, this would be it, the chocolate praline cake ($7.90).

I had to laugh when I read the bimbo reference – all looks and no substance.

Hehe maybe next time we should try Caramel at Shaw Tower, and have Tom’s Palette afterwards!

“honey”, “dear”, “pretty”, “cute”, “sexy” — how you hope you have a girl to call these names.. ( :
but these cakes look really pretty, but no doubt, if some are “bimbos”, just like girls.
like you always say, don’t be deceived by looks. ( :

anyway, i think the cherry completes the cake as “black forest”, without cherry, it might be just another cake with the word “chocolate”?

and, chocolate praline cake looks super tempting!!

Camemberu: It just hit me when I was thinking of how to describe it. But yeah it was a pity, first time trying a red velvet didn’t turn out good, what if I had a bad impression of it from now on? :p i tried hairloom and caramel yest, but didn’t go to tom’s. That will be another visit, another day

Shayna: Hello my dear, how do you know I do not have a girl each to call all this? I might just have someone in mind when I used each and every term u know :) What to do, guys are visual creatures, like they say you need two hands to clap; one want to deceived, and the other willing to be deceived. Yikes! i still do not like blackforest with cherry! no no no! yeah I can never refuse my darling, chocolate praline cake *winks*

Sugar bean: No problem! I will da bao and pass u all the melted cakes if they are still in shape! sounds good? :p Yeah desserts are always so photogenic, other than choc and cheesecake. See u next week! :)

this has definitely taken my mind off a bad day and a boring lecture (i was foodblog surfing on my phone during lecture haha) can’t wait to try out 1 caramel, as the strawberry shortcake(Sun Moulin) i ate on monday didn’t hit the right spot.

    WOW!
Definitely going to try this shop out. Is it me but are the size of the cakes a little on the small side? Haha. I guess it’s the quality that counts more.

    July 17th, 2009 @ 8:04 am

miss fruity: heheh you are not the only one that will go gaga :) yeah must-have!

Jo: honey did i shrink the cakes? HAHA. they are about canele’s size. and slightly pricier for some cakes

  27. Jasmine
    July 19th, 2009 @ 12:01 pm

YUMMY! The cakes look wonderful! I’ve walked past the cafe before and the cakes looked lovely. One thing I don’t like is that if you sit inside, there seems to be little space and little privacy because of all the glass windows and doors and people peering at you..

Maybe I’ll pop up and try the hazelnut praline during a less crowded time! :)

  28. ladyironchef
    July 19th, 2009 @ 9:15 pm

Jasmine: haha yeah pros and cons la, there’s sunlight coming in which makes the place feel cheerful and bright, but at the same time all the passerby will peep inside. But i ignored them, was busy eating my cake. heh

hazelnut praline, i feel canele and prive got better ones :)

i like the cafeteria overall setup, the place looks awesome to chill in. also the cakes look really appealing. sadly, on an honest look, the taste didnt managed to lift up to the brand and price tag. :)
